Kiev broke energy ceasefire five times in 24 hours – Moscow

The US-mediated moratorium was intended to safeguard crucial infrastructure on both Ukrainian and Russian-controlled territory
Ukrainian forces have launched five separate attacks against Russian energy infrastructure in 24 hours, the Defense Ministry in Moscow reported on Friday.
The strikes are the latest breach by Kiev of a US-mediated ceasefire on such attacks, the ministry said.
The listed incidents included shelling against elements of the Russian power grid and a drone strike against a transformer station, all causing disruptions in electricity supply, according to the ministry.
A partial ceasefire was announced by Russia on March 18, after President Vladimir Putin held a phone call with his US counterpart, Donald Trump.
Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has publicly supported the idea, but also complained that Russia wouldn’t agree to a full ceasefire.
Putin cited difficulties with monitoring violations along the lengthy front line and the potential for Kiev to use the pause for military build-up, explaining his concerns about a full truce.
Russia continues to honor the ceasefire on energy strikes despite Ukrainian breaches, the Defense Ministry said on Friday.
The Russian military has reported Ukrainian attacks breaching the moratorium on a daily basis, some of them involving long-range kamikaze drones targeting major energy facilities on Russian soil.
The Defense Ministry has described the incidents as demonstrating Kiev’s duplicity.
The Kremlin has said that while Moscow reserves the right to pull out of the 30-day agreement early, it opts to honor the deal to build goodwill with Washington.
The latest military update comes amid speculation that Trump’s special diplomatic envoy, Steve Witkoff, who is currently visiting Russia, may meet Putin in St. Petersburg later in the day.
Witkoff has met with the Russian leader twice already this year, and is closely involved in the attempt to normalize bilateral relations between the two nations.

Penguin blamed for helicopter crash in South Africa

South African authorities have announced that a helicopter which crashed in the country on January 19, 2025 was brought down by a penguin on board, the British newspaper Daily Mail reported on Friday.
The incident occurred when a Robinson R44 Raven II helicopter took off from Bird Island in Eastern Cape province.
On Tuesday, the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) explained in its report that the penguin had been placed inside a cardboard box, which a researcher on board was holding on his lap.
However, shortly after takeoff, it slipped from the passenger’s grip. “Whilst transitioning and about 15m above ground level, the cardboard box slid off to the right and on to the pilot’s cyclic pitch control lever,” the report said.
The impact forced the lever to shift abruptly to the right, causing the helicopter to roll violently. “The pilot could not recover timeously,” and the aircraft descended rapidly, with its blades striking the ground.
It was severely damaged in the crash, but fortunately, neither the human occupants nor the penguin sustained major injuries.
The report stated that the “penguin’s containment was not suitable for the flight conditions” due to the lack of a secure crate.
The purpose of the flight had been to assist a researcher in conducting a wildlife survey.
After the process was completed, the helicopter landed on the island, where the scientist requested transport for one of the penguins back to Port Elizabeth.
The pilot, who was identified in the report only as a 35-year-old male with over 1,650 flight hours and a license obtained in 2021, agreed to the request.
The penguin was placed inside a cardboard box for the return trip. While the pilot had performed a pre-flight risk assessment, the investigation revealed that he had failed to account for the additional risk posed by carrying the animal on board.
The report recommended that pilots receive additional training in flight risk management.
Pretoria’s High Court has imposed a 10-year ban on commercial fishing in six areas off South Africa’s west coast to protect the endangered African penguin, SABC radio reported in March.
In 2024, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classified the African penguin as “critically endangered,” the first among 18 penguin species to receive this status.
The population has declined by 97% over the past century, with fewer than 8,000 breeding pairs remaining. Commercial fishing off the coast of South Africa and Namibia remains the primary threat to their survival.

Kremlin confirms Putin meeting with Trump envoy

Russian President Vladimir Putin is meeting with Steve Witkoff, special envoy for US President Donald Trump, in St. Petersburg, the Kremlin has announced.
RT filmed Putin welcoming Witkoff earlier at the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library in the city center.
Speaking with journalists before the meeting, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the duration of the talks would be flexible and could take “an hour, or two, three or four; as long as President Putin requires.”
Peskov cautioned against expecting a breakthrough from the negotiations, but outlined what topics might be discussed, including normalization of bilateral relations, a possible in-person meeting between the two presidents, and the Ukraine conflict.
For Moscow, he said it would be an opportunity to share its concerns directly with a trusted Trump representative.
Witkoff is a confidant of Trump, whom he has tapped as his representative in the effort to mend the rift with Russia.
The meeting with Putin will be Witkoff’s third since February, when he successfully negotiated a prisoner exchange which Washington and Moscow described as a trust building gesture.
He was also part of a high-level US delegation that met Russian officials in Saudi Arabia last month for discussions on the Ukraine conflict.
Last week, Witkoff met with Russian presidential aide Kirill Dmitriev in Washington.
The head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund advises Putin on international economic cooperation and was spotted in the morning walking out of a hotel in St. Petersburg alongside Trump’s envoy.

People convinced they've found 'alien technology' as mysterious tower discovered on Google Maps in Area 51

The weekend’s finally rolled around again, and for those of you lucky enough to not be working, that might mean sitting out in the sun, catching up with mates, or endlessly doomscrolling while you binge telly.
But each of those could include one same key thing: conspiracy theories.
Oh, go on, be honest, even if you think they’re totally ridiculous, a big juicy theory can get you hooked.
And when it comes to the go to for a bit of a bizarre mystery, Area 51 has to be up there with people recently convinced they’ve found ‘alien technology’.
Yet the majority of us absolutely cannot go there; it’s surrounded by warning signs from the US, surveillance, and armed guards, and it’s even illegal to fly over it.
But there’s one way you can go there, kind of anyway; Google Maps.
With curiosity never seeming to fade away, people have been using the site to take a tour around Area 51 and are convinced they’ve found something as a mysterious tower was discovered.

North of Las Vegas, Nevada, Area 51 is the popular nickname for a United States Air Force facility that is so shrouded in secrecy, many have decided it’s connected to aliens and UFOs.
Screenshotting the satellite image from Google Maps, the tower went viral on social media as speculation quickly began over just what it actually is.
As users on Reddit asked just what the ‘tall triangle shaped tower at Area 51’ is, answers quickly came in – ranging from serious to the, well, not so-serious at all.
One suggested: “It’s 100 percent involved in RADAR signals. It’s literally impossible to tell you the frequency of the signal or the direction it’s coming from.
“This is why it out and open for everyone to see. That being said I would put money on a phased array system.”
A second pondered: “Probably air traffic control. Doesn’t look like any kind of radio tower. Could be some weird kind of water tower.”
Another wondered if it’s the platform ‘used to test radar signal returns from prototypes’,” with plenty agreeing it could be a radar tower.
While on the other (more fun) end, someone said: “It’s a sun dial so the aliens know when to go home after shift ends.”
“Ahh the Avengers tower, duh,” another added.
A third quipped: “It’s where the aliens test their various white powders.”
"Obviously alien technology. It pops out when the Earth is done," a fourth wrote.
While one summed the whole thing up as they joked: “It was built to specifically provoke theoretical conversation.”

CLOSE ENCOUNTER? Mysterious Brit weapons lab Porton Down finally addresses claims it’s storing ALIEN BODIES in top secret facility

A BRITISH weapons lab shrouded in mystery has finally spoken out on claims it is storing alien bodies in the secret facility.
Porton Down is the UK's most confidential chemical weapons lab. In 1999, it was the subject of a novel by Nick Pope, who worked for the Ministry of Defence, and even had to be cleared prior to publication.
The fictional "what if" book deals with UFOs and "alien abductions" and Pope speculated that alien bodies could have been taken to Porton Down, near Salisbury in Wiltshire.
The facility was founded in 1916 as Britain's chemical and biological weapons laboratory.
Defence ministry scientists carried out secret experiments involving some 20,000 servicemen, leading to the death of one from exposure to sarin nerve gas.
Since the 1960s, it has focused on developing countermeasures and defence and security technology.
But its secret structure has led to speculation about its activities, especially among flying-saucer theorists.
"No aliens, either alive or dead have ever been taken to Porton Down," the government's website reads.
Posting to debunk the theories, the page is titled "The Truth about Porton Down: Answering the myths and misconceptions".
"In the interests of national security much of this work is secret.
"Inevitably this has led to many myths and misconceptions springing up about Porton Down and the wider work carried out by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.
"No aliens, either alive or dead have ever been taken to Porton Down or any other Dstl site."
It added: "Dstl and its predecessors do not and have never grown cannabis at Porton Down."
This follows the false myth spread by some claiming the government are growing the drug there.
The top secret defence base was instrumental in helping identify the nerve agent used to poison former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.
Queen Elizabeth also visited the top secret base in 2020, after the coronavirus lockdown.
During their trip, the late queen and Prince William met the Porton Down staff and military personnel who were involved in the Novichok clear-up operation, along with scientists helping the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The formal purpose of the trip was to open the lab's new Energetics Analysis Centre, where the queen and the prince were given a demonstration of a forensic explosives investigation.
They also toured the lab's Energetic Enclosure to see a display of weaponry and tactics used in counter intelligence.

Mysterious ‘gate of the Gods’ mountain doorway could have links to ‘alien life’

A doorway cut into a rock face in Peru that some speculate has links to extraterrestrial life remains a great mystery to archaeologists.
Aramu Muru, dating back to 200 BC to 1,000 AD, was discovered in 1996 near Lake Titicaca and its T-shaped carving resembles a door to nowhere.
Since then the site has become a popular destination for tourists due to the mysteries and legends that surround the area.
Legend has it that an Inca priest in possession of a golden disk, placed it in a small depression in the doorway.
This caused it to open and the golden disk supposedly dropped from the sky.
On the side of doorway are two vertical grooves – which archaeologists believe serve as a decorative function.
Other legends speculate about the involvement of extraterrestrial life in creating the unusual doorway.
Another mystery is the purpose of this structure – with some archaeologists suggesting it was used for some kind of ritual.
Dr Mohammad Firoz Khan believes it was created by an ancient pre-Inca civilisation and described the structure as an ‘enigma’.
He wrote on X: ‘Native American legends portray the Gate of the Gods as a portal through which heroes met their gods, gaining immortality.
‘Visitors flock to the site, drawn by its rumored supernatural energy and claims of being a gateway to other dimensions.
‘Despite the lack of concrete evidence and no further excavations since its discovery, Aramu Muru remains a protected archaeological site, captivating tourists and spiritual seekers alike with its mysterious allure and historical significance.’
The leading theory from archaeologists is that Aramu Muru was built by the Tiwanaku culture.
The doorway is carved into red sandstone, which is a softer material than granite.
This enabled ancient people to carve out the structure just with simple tools at the time like stone, bone, and wood.
After it was built, the Aymara people lived in the region from 1150 to 1477 and called the structure the ‘Devil’s Doorway’.
These people believed it was an entrance for people who would communicate with the spiritual world.
They believed unauthorised entry could trap a person’s soul or anger the spirits.
Aramu Muru has been a topic on the History Channel show ‘Ancient Aliens.’
Ufologist Giorgio Tsoukalos, talked about the priest legend on the show and said: ‘We’re all led to believe that it’s all coincidence, it’s all just fantasy. Rubbish! Something happened.
‘It is possible that this sun disc had some type of an extraterrestrial connection and that this was a technological device with which to travel.’
