Modern environmentalism often strays from its original purpose, advancing policies that ~~un~~intentionally damage ecosystems, strain economies, and benefit powerful corporate interests.

(1) We are in a climate crisis

We may as well begin with the most controversial environmentalist claim, that our planet is at imminent risk of catastrophic climate change. The problem with this claim is two-fold. First, there remains vigorous—if suppressed—debate over whether the data actually supports this claim. There is ample evidence that average global temperatures are not rapidly increasing, if they are even increasing at all.

Fighting against the wishes of their voters is a classic Republican pastime — and this week is no different.

When they apparently thought nobody was looking, a cabal of GOP senators comprised of Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski, Utah’s John Curtis, Kansas’ Jerry Moran, and North Carolina’s Thom Tillis — who’s up for reelection next year — quietly sent a letter on Wednesday to Senate Majority Leader John Thune regarding ongoing negotiations over the party’s reconciliation package.

Their concern? That the final version of the legislation containing priorities backed by President Trump (tax cuts and border security) will also include provisions fully repealing President Biden’s wrongly named Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), a 2022 law filled with Democrat-backed goodies and “Green New Deal-style” policy priorities.

Specifically, these four Republican senators asked that a final reconciliation package forgo “full-scale” cuts of tax credits for the energy sector — which includes those for so-called “renewable energy sources.”

DoD / DIA Reports Suggest Biden Pentagon Suppressed COVID-19 Origins Investigation

Two newly uncovered documents - one from the Defense Department and another from a medical intelligence unit within the Pentagon - are renewing scrutiny over how the U.S. government handled early leads about the origins of COVID-19.

Released years after the fact, the documents suggest that top military and intelligence officials either ignored or downplayed signs that the coronavirus may have originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China - raising new questions about transparency and accountability, according to Just the News' Jerry Dunleavy.

One report, authored by the Defense Department’s Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness in December 2022 but quietly published online only in recent weeks, confirms that the Pentagon never conducted an investigation into whether U.S. service members may have been infected during the 2019 World Military Games held in Wuhan - a city that would soon become ground zero for the COVID-19 outbreak.

A second report, produced by the Defense Intelligence Agency’s National Center for Medical Intelligence (NCMI) and dated June 2020, asserts that “the molecular biology capabilities of [the Wuhan lab] and genome assessment are consistent with the hypothesis that SARS-CoV-2 was a lab-engineered virus.” The analysis, obtained this week through the Freedom of Information Act by the nonprofit U.S. Right to Know, remained classified for nearly five years.

The revelations follow years of contentious debate over the virus’s origins, with many scientists and political leaders initially dismissing the possibility of a lab leak as a conspiracy theory. Yet, as more evidence emerges, the narrative is increasingly shifting.

Pentagon Report: No Testing, No Investigation

The newly released Pentagon document - just three pages long and first revealed by the Washington Free Beacon, details a minimal response to concerns that American service members may have contracted COVID-19 during the 2019 World Military Games in Wuhan. The report states that seven U.S. military athletes who attended the event reported COVID-19-like symptoms between October 2019 and January 2020. All seven recovered within six days, and none were tested for COVID-19 or antibodies. The reason? “Testing was not available at this early stage of the pandemic.”

Kiev broke energy ceasefire five times in 24 hours – Moscow

The US-mediated moratorium was intended to safeguard crucial infrastructure on both Ukrainian and Russian-controlled territory

Ukrainian forces have launched five separate attacks against Russian energy infrastructure in 24 hours, the Defense Ministry in Moscow reported on Friday.

The strikes are the latest breach by Kiev of a US-mediated ceasefire on such attacks, the ministry said.

The listed incidents included shelling against elements of the Russian power grid and a drone strike against a transformer station, all causing disruptions in electricity supply, according to the ministry.

A partial ceasefire was announced by Russia on March 18, after President Vladimir Putin held a phone call with his US counterpart, Donald Trump.

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has publicly supported the idea, but also complained that Russia wouldn’t agree to a full ceasefire.

Putin cited difficulties with monitoring violations along the lengthy front line and the potential for Kiev to use the pause for military build-up, explaining his concerns about a full truce.

Russia continues to honor the ceasefire on energy strikes despite Ukrainian breaches, the Defense Ministry said on Friday.

The Russian military has reported Ukrainian attacks breaching the moratorium on a daily basis, some of them involving long-range kamikaze drones targeting major energy facilities on Russian soil.

The Defense Ministry has described the incidents as demonstrating Kiev’s duplicity.

The Kremlin has said that while Moscow reserves the right to pull out of the 30-day agreement early, it opts to honor the deal to build goodwill with Washington.

The latest military update comes amid speculation that Trump’s special diplomatic envoy, Steve Witkoff, who is currently visiting Russia, may meet Putin in St. Petersburg later in the day.

Witkoff has met with the Russian leader twice already this year, and is closely involved in the attempt to normalize bilateral relations between the two nations.

Penguin blamed for helicopter crash in South Africa

South African authorities have announced that a helicopter which crashed in the country on January 19, 2025 was brought down by a penguin on board, the British newspaper Daily Mail reported on Friday.

The incident occurred when a Robinson R44 Raven II helicopter took off from Bird Island in Eastern Cape province.

On Tuesday, the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) explained in its report that the penguin had been placed inside a cardboard box, which a researcher on board was holding on his lap.

However, shortly after takeoff, it slipped from the passenger’s grip. “Whilst transitioning and about 15m above ground level, the cardboard box slid off to the right and on to the pilot’s cyclic pitch control lever,” the report said.

The impact forced the lever to shift abruptly to the right, causing the helicopter to roll violently. “The pilot could not recover timeously,” and the aircraft descended rapidly, with its blades striking the ground.

It was severely damaged in the crash, but fortunately, neither the human occupants nor the penguin sustained major injuries.

The report stated that the “penguin’s containment was not suitable for the flight conditions” due to the lack of a secure crate.

The purpose of the flight had been to assist a researcher in conducting a wildlife survey.

After the process was completed, the helicopter landed on the island, where the scientist requested transport for one of the penguins back to Port Elizabeth.

The pilot, who was identified in the report only as a 35-year-old male with over 1,650 flight hours and a license obtained in 2021, agreed to the request.

The penguin was placed inside a cardboard box for the return trip. While the pilot had performed a pre-flight risk assessment, the investigation revealed that he had failed to account for the additional risk posed by carrying the animal on board.

The report recommended that pilots receive additional training in flight risk management.

Pretoria’s High Court has imposed a 10-year ban on commercial fishing in six areas off South Africa’s west coast to protect the endangered African penguin, SABC radio reported in March.

In 2024, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classified the African penguin as “critically endangered,” the first among 18 penguin species to receive this status.

The population has declined by 97% over the past century, with fewer than 8,000 breeding pairs remaining. Commercial fishing off the coast of South Africa and Namibia remains the primary threat to their survival.

Kremlin confirms Putin meeting with Trump envoy

Russian President Vladimir Putin is meeting with Steve Witkoff, special envoy for US President Donald Trump, in St. Petersburg, the Kremlin has announced.

RT filmed Putin welcoming Witkoff earlier at the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library in the city center.

Speaking with journalists before the meeting, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the duration of the talks would be flexible and could take “an hour, or two, three or four; as long as President Putin requires.”

Peskov cautioned against expecting a breakthrough from the negotiations, but outlined what topics might be discussed, including normalization of bilateral relations, a possible in-person meeting between the two presidents, and the Ukraine conflict.

For Moscow, he said it would be an opportunity to share its concerns directly with a trusted Trump representative.

Witkoff is a confidant of Trump, whom he has tapped as his representative in the effort to mend the rift with Russia.

The meeting with Putin will be Witkoff’s third since February, when he successfully negotiated a prisoner exchange which Washington and Moscow described as a trust building gesture.

He was also part of a high-level US delegation that met Russian officials in Saudi Arabia last month for discussions on the Ukraine conflict.

Last week, Witkoff met with Russian presidential aide Kirill Dmitriev in Washington.

The head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund advises Putin on international economic cooperation and was spotted in the morning walking out of a hotel in St. Petersburg alongside Trump’s envoy.

Volcker blames recession on trade imbalances

Paul Volcker, former chairman of the Federal Reserve and an economic adviser to President Obama, told a congressional committee Wednesday that massive trade-related imbalances in the U.S. economy were the source of the financial crisis that has produced an ugly recession.

Mr. Volcker then urged Congress to enact long-term financial-market reforms by increasing regulation of large financial institutions that could undermine the entire economy if they failed.

Some banks are not only “too big to fail,” Mr. Volcker said. Some are “too big to exist.”

Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee Chairman Christopher J. Dodd, Connecticut Democrat, asked Mr. Volcker to assess the source of risk in the current crisis.

But each of those could include one same key thing: conspiracy theories.

Oh, go on, be honest, even if you think they’re totally ridiculous, a big juicy theory can get you hooked.

And when it comes to the go to for a bit of a bizarre mystery, Area 51 has to be up there with people recently convinced they’ve found ‘alien technology’.

Yet the majority of us absolutely cannot go there; it’s surrounded by warning signs from the US, surveillance, and armed guards, and it’s even illegal to fly over it.

But there’s one way you can go there, kind of anyway; Google Maps.

With curiosity never seeming to fade away, people have been using the site to take a tour around Area 51 and are convinced they’ve found something as a mysterious tower was discovered.

If you want to have a look yourself, search for 37°14'46.5"N 115°49'24.0"W.

North of Las Vegas, Nevada, Area 51 is the popular nickname for a United States Air Force facility that is so shrouded in secrecy, many have decided it’s connected to aliens and UFOs.

Screenshotting the satellite image from Google Maps, the tower went viral on social media as speculation quickly began over just what it actually is.

As users on Reddit asked just what the ‘tall triangle shaped tower at Area 51’ is, answers quickly came in – ranging from serious to the, well, not so-serious at all.

One suggested: “It’s 100 percent involved in RADAR signals. It’s literally impossible to tell you the frequency of the signal or the direction it’s coming from.

“This is why it out and open for everyone to see. That being said I would put money on a phased array system.”

A second pondered: “Probably air traffic control. Doesn’t look like any kind of radio tower. Could be some weird kind of water tower.”

Another wondered if it’s the platform ‘used to test radar signal returns from prototypes’,” with plenty agreeing it could be a radar tower.

While on the other (more fun) end, someone said: “It’s a sun dial so the aliens know when to go home after shift ends.”

“Ahh the Avengers tower, duh,” another added.

A third quipped: “It’s where the aliens test their various white powders.”

"Obviously alien technology. It pops out when the Earth is done," a fourth wrote.

While one summed the whole thing up as they joked: “It was built to specifically provoke theoretical conversation.”

Leaked Data Reveals Massive Israeli Campaign to Remove Pro-Palestine Posts on Facebook and Instagram

A sweeping crackdown on posts on Instagram and Facebook that are critical of Israel—or even vaguely supportive of Palestinians—was directly orchestrated by the government of Israel, according to internal Meta data obtained by Drop Site News. The data show that Meta has complied with 94% of takedown requests issued by Israel since October 7, 2023. Israel is the biggest originator of takedown requests globally by far, and Meta has followed suit—widening the net of posts it automatically removes, and creating what can be called the largest mass censorship operation in modern history.

Government requests for takedowns generally focus on posts made by citizens inside that government’s borders, Meta insiders said. What makes Israel’s campaign unique is its success in censoring speech in many countries outside of Israel. What’s more, Israel's censorship project will echo well into the future, insiders said, as the AI program Meta is currently training how to moderate content will base future decisions on the successful takedown of content critical of Israel’s genocide.

The data, compiled and provided to Drop Site News by whistleblowers, reveal the internal mechanics of Meta’s “Integrity Organization”—an organization within Meta dedicated to ensuring the safety and authenticity on its platforms. Takedown requests (TDRs) allow individuals, organizations, and government officials to request the removal of content that allegedly violates Meta’s policies. The documents indicate that the vast majority of Israel’s requests—95%—fall under Meta’s “terrorism” or “violence and incitement” categories. And Israel’s requests have overwhelmingly targeted users from Arab and Muslim-majority nations in a massive effort to silence criticism of Israel.

Multiple independent sources inside Meta confirmed the authenticity of the information provided by the whistleblowers. The data also show that Meta removed over 90,000 posts to comply with TDRs submitted by the Israeli government in an average of 30 seconds. Meta also significantly expanded automated takedowns since October 7, resulting in an estimated 38.8 million additional posts being “actioned upon” across Facebook and Instagram since late 2023. “Actioned upon” in Facebook terms means that a post was either removed, banned, or suppressed.

A BRITISH weapons lab shrouded in mystery has finally spoken out on claims it is storing alien bodies in the secret facility.

Porton Down is the UK's most confidential chemical weapons lab. In 1999, it was the subject of a novel by Nick Pope, who worked for the Ministry of Defence, and even had to be cleared prior to publication.

The fictional "what if" book deals with UFOs and "alien abductions" and Pope speculated that alien bodies could have been taken to Porton Down, near Salisbury in Wiltshire.

The facility was founded in 1916 as Britain's chemical and biological weapons laboratory.

Defence ministry scientists carried out secret experiments involving some 20,000 servicemen, leading to the death of one from exposure to sarin nerve gas.

Since the 1960s, it has focused on developing countermeasures and defence and security technology.

But its secret structure has led to speculation about its activities, especially among flying-saucer theorists.

"No aliens, either alive or dead have ever been taken to Porton Down," the government's website reads.

Posting to debunk the theories, the page is titled "The Truth about Porton Down: Answering the myths and misconceptions".

"In the interests of national security much of this work is secret.

"Inevitably this has led to many myths and misconceptions springing up about Porton Down and the wider work carried out by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.

"No aliens, either alive or dead have ever been taken to Porton Down or any other Dstl site."

It added: "Dstl and its predecessors do not and have never grown cannabis at Porton Down."

This follows the false myth spread by some claiming the government are growing the drug there.

The top secret defence base was instrumental in helping identify the nerve agent used to poison former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

Queen Elizabeth also visited the top secret base in 2020, after the coronavirus lockdown.

During their trip, the late queen and Prince William met the Porton Down staff and military personnel who were involved in the Novichok clear-up operation, along with scientists helping the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The formal purpose of the trip was to open the lab's new Energetics Analysis Centre, where the queen and the prince were given a demonstration of a forensic explosives investigation.

Seen in their entirety for the first time, Emma Mordecai’s US Civil War writings paint a seemingly contradictory picture of an anti-emancipation woman who was herself a minority

Like this year, Passover in 1864 took place in April. In the penultimate year of the American Civil War, a Jewish Confederate citizen named Emma Mordecai spent the holiday with her cousins in the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia. It’s one of the opening memories in the diary she started in the spring of 1864 and continued into the following year.

“By all I was most kindly greeted,” she wrote in her diary, “and I was gratified at the unvarying regret expressed at our family having left Richmond, and at the kind invitations I received from various friends to pass days or nights with them whenever I could.”

The 51-year-old Mordecai had previously lived in Richmond but left the capital to seek refuge from the advancing Union army at her sister-in-law’s nearby farmhouse. Still, Mordecai was committed to returning to the war-torn city’s Jewish community for the holidays, including that Passover.

It was a colder-than-usual spring, making it vital to light fires at the farmhouse and for much of her Passover stay in Richmond. There were other concerns: Her nephew George, after some time away from the Confederate army, had rejoined its ranks with his two brothers.

Mordecai’s wartime diary in its entirety is now available to the general public in print for the first time, thanks to the poignant efforts of two scholars, Dianne Ashton and Melissa R. Klapper, both of Rowan University in New Jersey.

Mysterious ‘gate of the Gods’ mountain doorway could have links to ‘alien life’

A doorway cut into a rock face in Peru that some speculate has links to extraterrestrial life remains a great mystery to archaeologists.

Aramu Muru, dating back to 200 BC to 1,000 AD, was discovered in 1996 near Lake Titicaca and its T-shaped carving resembles a door to nowhere.

Since then the site has become a popular destination for tourists due to the mysteries and legends that surround the area.

Legend has it that an Inca priest in possession of a golden disk, placed it in a small depression in the doorway.

This caused it to open and the golden disk supposedly dropped from the sky.

On the side of doorway are two vertical grooves – which archaeologists believe serve as a decorative function.

Other legends speculate about the involvement of extraterrestrial life in creating the unusual doorway.

Another mystery is the purpose of this structure – with some archaeologists suggesting it was used for some kind of ritual.

Dr Mohammad Firoz Khan believes it was created by an ancient pre-Inca civilisation and described the structure as an ‘enigma’.

He wrote on X: ‘Native American legends portray the Gate of the Gods as a portal through which heroes met their gods, gaining immortality.

‘Visitors flock to the site, drawn by its rumored supernatural energy and claims of being a gateway to other dimensions.

‘Despite the lack of concrete evidence and no further excavations since its discovery, Aramu Muru remains a protected archaeological site, captivating tourists and spiritual seekers alike with its mysterious allure and historical significance.’

The leading theory from archaeologists is that Aramu Muru was built by the Tiwanaku culture.

The doorway is carved into red sandstone, which is a softer material than granite.

This enabled ancient people to carve out the structure just with simple tools at the time like stone, bone, and wood.

After it was built, the Aymara people lived in the region from 1150 to 1477 and called the structure the ‘Devil’s Doorway’.

These people believed it was an entrance for people who would communicate with the spiritual world.

They believed unauthorised entry could trap a person’s soul or anger the spirits.

Aramu Muru has been a topic on the History Channel show ‘Ancient Aliens.’

Ufologist Giorgio Tsoukalos, talked about the priest legend on the show and said: ‘We’re all led to believe that it’s all coincidence, it’s all just fantasy. Rubbish! Something happened.

‘It is possible that this sun disc had some type of an extraterrestrial connection and that this was a technological device with which to travel.’

The Israel Defense Forces on Friday confirmed that it participated in a just-completed annual aerial exercise hosted by Greece, which this year included the participation of Qatar.

Eleven other countries joined Greece in its Iniochos exercise this year: the United States, France, India, Israel, Italy, Montenegro, Poland, Qatar, Slovenia, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. Cyprus participated with supporting personnel, and Slovakia and Bahrain sent observers.

The Israeli Air Force only sent a Gulfstream G550 spy plane from the 122nd Squadron for the drill, the military confirmed on Friday, more than a week after it was reported that the IAF was involved in the exercise.

In previous years, the IAF sent several fighter jet squadrons and refuelers, in addition to spy planes.

The drill began on March 24 and ended on Friday. The IDF had refused to comment on the drill until it had concluded.

Recent research by Case and Deaton (2015) suggests an alarming rise in “deaths

of despair”—drug overdose, suicide, and diseases of the liver—in the United States.

Identifying potential contributors to this increase is an important topic for researchers across a broad range of disciplines, with Case and Deaton (2017) arguing that

the trend may be driven by a combination of negative social and economic outcomes

that accumulate over time. Though large literatures in economics and public health

examine the effect of economic shocks on health and mortality, finding exogenous

sources of variation in economic conditions remains an important challenge. In this

paper, we document a link between deaths of despair, particularly from drug overdose, and a large, plausibly exogenous shock to local labor markets driven by a

change in US trade policy.

In October, 2000, the United States Congress passed a bill granting permanent

normal trade relations (PNTR) to China, a trade liberalization that differentially

exposed US regions to increased import competition via their industry structure.

While US imports from China had already been subject to the low normal trade

relations (NTR) tariff rates available to most US trading partners before PNTR, continued access to these rates was subject to annual renewal by the US president and Congress. Absent these renewals, US tariffs on most Chinese imports would have

risen abruptly to the non-NTR rates set by the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930.

Before passage of PNTR, the possibility of these dramatic tariff increases created

a disincentive for US firms considering sourcing goods from China, and Chinese

firms contemplating expansions into the United States. PNTR eliminated the need

for annual renewals, rendering production in China for export to the United States

more attractive and thereby increasing import competition for US producers. …

Meet the two Microsoft employees who helped shine a light on Microsoft's role in Israel's war on Gaza

It was early 2025, and Ibtihal Aboussad couldn't believe what she had just read.

The company at which she had spent the past three years working as a software engineer in the AI department was actively providing the Israeli military with the AI infrastructure to carry out what several leading human rights groups and experts have described as a "genocide" in Gaza.

In the stream of stories she had parsed through, Abbousad found that through an initiative called Project Azure, Microsoft was providing a range of computing services to support Israel's military operations, including AI operations that helped the Israeli military conduct operations in Gaza.

These products, including a suite of communication technology, were being used by the Israeli army's notorious Unit 8200 and Unit 81, as well as an air force unit, known as the Ofek, to build "kill lists".

She was horrified. Not only was she an employee at Microsoft, she was part of the AI division itself.

Microsoft is a household name around the world for popular software like Office or its operating system, Windows, or for being the parent company of the X-box console, or for best-selling games like Candy Crush. Aboussad told Middle East Eye that like many others, she was unaware that they were also providing cloud storage, computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and facial recognition, among a collection of services for the Israeli military.

She was even more shocked to find that as the war on Gaza expanded, so too did Microsoft's entanglements with the Israeli military.

The Israeli military's usage of the company's cloud storage facilities in the first six months after 7 October 2023 was 60 percent more than the four months preceding it. Leaked documents show that the Israeli military's usage of Microsoft's AI products also ticked up in the same period.

The 25-year-old Aboussad, who worked in the AI division in which she was involved in converting speech to text, says she hadn't realised she "signed up to work on code that directly powers war crimes". This realisation spurred her into action.

She joined and began organising with the No Azure for Apartheid campaign, which was created in late 2023 by a group of Microsoft employees who wanted the company to end its contracts with Israel and uphold its own stated values.

Timber production is essential for crucial human activities like construction and energy production. The United States has an abundance of timber resources that are more than adequate to meet our domestic timber production needs, but heavy-handed Federal policies have prevented full utilization of these resources and made us reliant on foreign producers. Our inability to fully exploit our domestic timber supply has impeded the creation of jobs and prosperity, contributed to wildfire disasters, degraded fish and wildlife habitats, increased the cost of construction and energy, and threatened our economic security. These onerous Federal policies have forced our Nation to rely upon imported lumber, thus exporting jobs and prosperity and compromising our self-reliance. It is vital that we reverse these policies and increase domestic timber production to protect our national and economic security.
