Krause is the third person to lead the IRS since January. Acting Commissioner Doug O'Donnell left last month.

Mike Rogers announces ‘Space Command will officially be assigned to build its headquarters in Huntsville’

After years of politicized delay by the Biden Administration, Alabama Congressman and Chairman of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, Mike Rogers announced that the headquarters of U.S. Space Command will officially be built in Huntsville.

Speaking on Auburn University’s McCrary Institute’s “Cyber Focus” podcast, Rogers confirmed that the long-awaited decision will be finalized this month.

“I expect sometime during the month of April, that space command will officially be assigned to build its headquarters in Huntsville,” Rogers (R-Saks) said.

“I’ve already talked with the contractor. He is ready to turn dirt on the day the announcement’s made, and we do expect it to be announced right after the Air Force Secretary is named.”

​President Donald Trump nominated Troy Meink to serve as the Secretary of the Air Force earlier this year. His confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee was successful in March.

The Senate has not yet scheduled a vote to confirm Meink’s nomination, but it is expected sometime in April, according to reports.

Roger’s statement marks the most consequential development in a long and politicized struggle with the previous Democrat-controlled White House.

In January 2021, during President Donald Trump’s first administration, the U.S. Air Force announced that Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal in Alabama was the preferred location for U.S. Space Command’s permanent headquarters.

That decision followed a comprehensive evaluation process in which Redstone Arsenal ranked first, surpassing all other contenders, including Colorado’s Peterson Space Force Base, which ranked fifth.

After taking office, Joe Biden’s administration initiated a review of the basing decision. By May 2023, reports indicated that the administration intended to reverse the previous decision and keep SPACECOM in Colorado.

Alabama’s congressional delegation responded vigorously to the potential reversal. U.S. Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) and Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) adamantly sounded the alarm in Congress that Huntsville was selected through a fair process and that political factors should not override national security interests.

Rogers’ remarks came during a wide-ranging conversation with host Frank Cilluffo that covered cyber threats, space policy, national defense priorities, and technological readiness.

During the interview, Rogers also discussed a potential new missile defense initiative called “Golden Dome,” echoing President Trump’s desire to mirror Israel’s Iron Dome system with a layered U.S. approach.

“Obviously, this would be exactly in the wheelhouse of Huntsville… They already have a big space mission up there,” he said. “This is exactly in their wheelhouse.”

As Rogers put it: “There will be a lot of battles fought where there’s not a gun fired. It’s going to be through cyber and through space.” For Huntsville, that future is about to become official.

A former D.C. National Guard official is accusing two senior Army leaders of lying to Congress and participating in a secret attempt to rewrite the history of the military’s response to the Capitol riot.

In a 36-page memo, Col. Earl Matthews, who held high-level National Security Council and Pentagon roles during the Trump administration, slams the Pentagon’s inspector general for what he calls an error-riddled report that protects a top Army official who argued against sending the National Guard to the Capitol on Jan. 6, delaying the insurrection response for hours.

Matthews’ memo, sent to the Jan. 6 select committee this month and obtained by POLITICO, includes detailed recollections of the insurrection response as it calls two Army generals — Gen. Charles Flynn, who served as deputy chief of staff for operations on Jan. 6, and Lt. Gen. Walter Piatt, the director of Army staff — “absolute and unmitigated liars” for their characterization of the events of that day. Matthews has never publicly discussed the chaos of the Capitol siege.

On Jan. 6, Matthews was serving as the top attorney to Maj. Gen. William Walker, then commanding general of the D.C. National Guard. Matthews’ memo defends the Capitol attack response by Walker, who now serves as the House sergeant at arms, amplifying Walker’s previous congressional testimony about the hourslong delay in the military’s order for the D.C. National Guard to deploy to the riot scene.

“Every leader in the D.C. Guard wanted to respond and knew they could respond to the riot at the seat of government” before they were given clearance to do so on Jan. 6, Matthews’ memo reads. Instead, he said, D.C. guard officials “set [sic] stunned watching in the Armory” during the first hours of the attack on Congress during its certification of the 2020 election results.

Matthews’ memo levels major accusations: that Flynn and Piatt lied to Congress about their response to pleas for the D.C. Guard to quickly be deployed on Jan. 6; that the Pentagon inspector general’s November report on Army leadership’s response to the attack was “replete with factual inaccuracies”; and that the Army has created its own closely held revisionist document about the Capitol riot that’s “worthy of the best Stalinist or North Korea propagandist.”

The memo follows Walker’s own public call for the inspector general to retract its detailed report on the events of Jan. 6, as first reported by The Washington Post. Walker told the Post he objected to specific allegations by the Pentagon watchdog that Matthews’ memo also criticizes, calling the inspector general’s report “inaccurate” and “sloppy work.”

The new memo from Matthews, who now serves in the Army reserves, emerges as officials involved in the response that day try to explain their decision-making to investigators. The House select committee has probed the attack for months, and earlier this year top officials testified before the House oversight panel.

Reached for comment, Matthews said the memo he wrote is entirely accurate. “Our Army has never failed us and did not do so on January 6, 2021,” he said. “However, occasionally some of our Army leaders have failed us and they did so on January 6th. Then they lied about it and tried to cover it up. They tried to smear a good man and to erase history.”

Flynn, now the commanding general of the U.S. Army Pacific, and Piatt didn’t respond to messages. Army spokesperson Mike Brady said in a statement that the service’s “actions on January 6th have been well-documented and reported on, and Gen. Flynn and Lt. Gen. Piatt have been open, honest and thorough in their sworn testimony with Congress and DOD investigators.”

At the time, Piatt was the director of Army staff, one of the top generals in the Pentagon, and Flynn was the Army’s director of operations. The two men were the highest-ranking Army officials who spoke on the 2:30 call, according to Matthews.

“LTG Piatt stated that it would not be his best military advice to recommend to the Secretary of the Army that the D.C. National Guard be allowed to deploy to the Capitol at that time,” Matthews wrote, adding: “LTGs Piatt and Flynn stated that the optics of having uniformed military personnel deployed to the U.S. Capitol would not be good.”

Piatt and Flynn suggested instead that Guardsmen take over D.C. police officers’ traffic duties so those officers could head to the Capitol, Matthews continues.

In addition to Matthews’ memo, POLITICO also obtained a document produced by a D.C. Guard official and dated Jan. 7 that lays out a timeline of Jan. 6. The D.C. Guard timeline, a separate document whose author took notes during the call, also said that Piatt and Flynn at 2:37 p.m. “recommended for DC Guard to standby,” rather than immediately deploying to the Capitol during the riot.

Four minutes later, according to that Guard timeline, Flynn again “advised D.C. National Guard to standby until the request has been routed” to then-Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy and then-acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller.

Everyone on the call was “astounded” except Piatt and Flynn, Matthews wrote.

Both men, however, later denied to Congress that they had said the Guard shouldn’t deploy to the Capitol.

In response to a written question from House Oversight Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) in June about whether Piatt advised anyone in the Guard’s chain of command not to deploy directly to the Capitol, Piatt wrote, “At no point on January 6 did I tell anyone that the D.C. National Guard should not deploy directly to the Capitol.”

That statement, Matthews says in his memo, is “false and misleading.”

Walker also testified to Congress in March that Piatt and Flynn expressed concerns about “optics.”

Further, Flynn told Maloney that he “never expressed a concern about the visuals, image, or public perception of” sending Guardsmen to the Capitol.

That answer, Matthews says in his memo, is “outright perjury.”

Matthews wrote that he and Walker “heard Flynn identify himself and unmistakably heard him say that optics of a National Guard presence on Capitol Hill was an issue for him. That it would not look good. Either Piatt or Flynn mentioned ‘peaceful protestors.’”

Flynn’s brother, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, promulgated a host of conspiracy theories in the lead-up to Jan. 6 and called for former President Donald Trump to impose martial law. Matthews’ memo does not insinuate that Gen. Charles Flynn’s actions on Jan. 6 were shaped by his brother, who has been subpoenaed by the select committee, and does not mention Michael Flynn.

The two generals told the House oversight committee that the Guard wasn’t ready to respond to the chaos that day, and Flynn testified to the House Oversight Committee in June that a “team of over 40 officers and non-commissioned officers immediately worked to recall the 154 D.C. National Guard personnel from their current missions, reorganize them, re-equip them, and begin to redeploy them to the Capitol.” Matthews says that assertion “constituted the willful deception of Congress.”

“If it does not constitute the willful and deliberate misleading of Congress, then nothing does,” Matthews wrote of Flynn’s statement. “Flynn was referring to 154 D.C. Guardsmen who were already on duty, were trained in civil disturbance response, already had area familiarization with Washington, DC, were properly kitted and were delayed only because of inaction and inertia at the Pentagon.”

In other words, Matthews indicates, the idea that it took 40 officers to get 154 National Guard personnel ready to go to the Capitol beggars belief.

Every D.C. Guard leader was desperate to get to the Capitol to help, Matthews writes — then stunned by the delay in deployment. Responding to civil unrest in Washington is “a foundational mission, a statutory mission of the D.C. National Guard,” his memo notes.

The Astroscale US Refueler is manifested to launch in the summer of 2026.

"We've got to get this done," Johnson said after a spirited meeting.

Some conservatives refused to relent.

"Why am I voting on a budget based on promises that I don't believe are going to materialize?" said Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, who at the meeting with Trump indicated he would oppose the budget plan, Politico reported.

Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., chair of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, said he even declined an invitation to attend the meeting with Trump.

"There's nothing that I can hear at the White House that I don't understand about the situation," Harris said, according to Politico.

House conservatives are demanding as much as $2 trillion in budget cuts to help offset the costs of the tax breaks over a decade, while Senate Republicans are hesitant to go that far.

Conservatives say the level of spending cuts in the Senate resolution is a fraction of what the House has approved, and they also remain unimpressed with the upper chamber's insistence that extending Trump's 2017 tax cuts would cost nothing because the move simply maintains current policy.

"The American people want and expect results, not more fiscal trickery," said Rep.Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., the Times reported.

"More business as usual at a time when that's exactly what we're trying to avoid," Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz., the outlet added.

Lunar Outpost unveils sleek new 'Eagle' moon rover

The Eagle has landed.

Colorado-based Lunar Outpost just unveiled its new "Eagle" moon rover at the Space Foundation's 40th annual Space Symposium here, and it looks straight out of science fiction.

Sporting a sleek metallic finish and ice-blue LED lighting, the Eagle rover turned quite a few heads on the expo floor this year. But Eagle boasts more than just futuristic looks.

The rover is packed with features designed with the next generation of Artemis program moon explorers in mind and is based on feedback from current NASA astronauts at NASA's Johnson Space Center, according to Lunar Outpost's A.J Gerner.

"We've developed our all of our crew and human interfaces through a lot of testing with NASA Johnson, we've had eight astronauts, even in full pressurized suits, evaluate the design, and their feedback is throughout the vehicle," Gerner told Space.com.

One of the features astronauts particularly enjoyed during testing is the wide, easily accessible front entry area, which is maneuverable even in a bulky spacesuit.

In the configuration shown here at the symposium, the Eagle vehicle features two seats for crew, each with its own redundant and mirrored controls, meaning either astronaut can control the rover.

The steering controls on each side consist of a single handle that controls four individual motors that drive each wheel.

Each wheel can turn independently of the other three, allowing the Eagle rover to turn on its center axis or "crab walk" sideways, Gerner said.

In addition to the hand controller, each seat in the Eagle rover has a multifunction display at eye level for each of the astronauts riding on board.

These displays will fuse feeds from onboard cameras and Lunar Outpost's "Eagle eye" sensors that can see things astronauts' eyes cant, which will come in handy if the vehicle is ever sent to explore regions near the moon's south pole that contain permanently shadowed regions or deep craters where water ice might be hiding.

"The idea is to extend the crew's perception," Gerner said, "and the displays put all that information right at their fingertips."

To help astronauts conduct science and exploration on the lunar surface, Eagle also features tool lockers and refrigerated sample containers to help bring home samples of the moon safely.

Each tool locker features a shelf that can raise up to astronauts' chest height, making it easy for them to reach what they need even in a bulky spacesuit.

Additional tool racks and storage can be added to the racks along the sides of the rear of the vehicle.

But Eagle wasn't just built with astronauts in mind. Gerner said the vehicle can be operated autonomously or by controllers on Earth, allowing it to explore the lunar surface even if astronauts aren't on the moon with it.

Lunar Outpost hopes to have Eagle on the moon by the end of the decade to support NASA's planned Artemis 5 mission.

But the rover is currently in the running alongside two others, designed by Intuitive Machines and Venturi Astrolab, in NASA's quest to find its next "lunar terrain vehicle."

The total potential value of the lunar terrain vehicle services contract is $4.6 billion.

Newly discovered Comet C/2025 F2 (SWAN) captured in stunning photo blazing across UK skies

The newly discovered comet, now designated Comet C/2025 F2 (SWAN) is making a striking debut in the early morning skies — and astrophotographer Josh Dury had front-row seats to capture it this morning.

"Amazing to witness such a newly discovered comet just several hours after its official designation," Dury told Space.com.

Dury captured Comet C/2025 F2 (SWAN) soaring over the Mendip Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Somerset, U.K. at approximately 4:50 a.m. local time.

"Comets are a great celestial attraction — as these are opportunities to capture dirty snowballs; the oldest objects from the far edges of our solar system," Dury told Space.com.

"Each takes on unique characters of their own in appearance and color, providing signals from the early formation of our place in the universe."

The comet was discovered in late March by Australian amateur astronomer Michael Mattiazzo, using imagery from the SWAN instrument aboard the sun-watching SOHO spacecraft, which maps hydrogen in the solar wind.

Enough observational data has now been collected and the discovery confirmed by the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center, it is now designated Comet C/2025 F2 (SWAN).

If you're hoping to catch a glimpse of the comet yourself, you'll need to act quickly.

It will remain visible until around April 14, after which it moves into the constellation Andromeda and becomes lost in the twilight as it approaches the sun.

The comet reaches perihelion — its closest point to the sun — on May 1, after which it will become visible from the southern hemisphere.

"With weather and moon prospects, this was our best chance to observe from the UK," Dury said.

The acting NASA chief elaborated on how she views her role in this "weird" time at the agency, stating that she has been primarily attempting to keep the agency moving forward on its flagship programs of record like the Artemis moon missions or recent partnerships on private moon landings.

But the confirmation of a new agency administrator will "allow us to move forward even faster with some more specificity, if you will," Petro said.
