A group of 11 healthcare workers in British Columbia is pushing forward with a legal challenge against provincial COVID-19 vaccine mandates, despite the BC government’s argument that the case is now irrelevant.

The workers, represented by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, are seeking to appeal a 2024 Supreme Court decision that upheld the mandates.

But before the appeal can proceed, they must convince the BC Court of Appeal that their case still matters. The province claims the legal challenge is “moot” because the mandates were rescinded in July 2024 and are no longer in effect.

The workers are scheduled to make their case before the Court of Appeal on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The controversy centers on an order issued by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry on October 5, 2023.

It required unvaccinated new hires and previously terminated healthcare workers to receive an updated COVID-19 vaccine, even if they had previously been fired under earlier mandates.

That order was part of a broader policy that led to the dismissal of about 1,800 healthcare professionals across BC, contributing to staffing shortages. Continue…

Conservative MP Damien Kurek says he will renounce his seat in the House of Commons to allow Tory Leader Pierre Poilievre to compete in a byelection.

Poilievre, who had held the Carleton riding since 2004, lost it to Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy in the April 28 federal election.

Kurek was re-elected in the Alberta riding of Battle River-Crowfoot this week in a landslide. He won more than 53,000 votes, with the second place Liberal candidate obtaining just under 7,500 votes.

Kurek said in a May 2 statement it has been a “tremendous honour” to serve the people of his riding since first being elected in 2019. This would have made him eligible for his MP pension in October. Kurek added that Poilievre ran a “remarkable national campaign” with Tories obtaining their highest vote share since 1988 when Progressive-Conservatives under Brian Mulroney won 43 percent of the vote.

In this week’s election, the Tories obtained 41.3 percent of the national vote, compared to 43.7 percent for Liberals. The Liberal Party won a strong minority with 168 seats, while Tories obtained 144 seats.

Three foreign nationals have been caught attempting to enter Canada illegally via a railway bridge near Niagara Falls, where a vehicle was waiting for them on the Canadian side, according to the RCMP.

Three individuals were seen attempting to enter Canada on April 13 through the Fort Erie train bridge, which links Ontario with Buffalo, New York, Niagara-on-the-Lake RCMP said in a May 1 release. One of the migrants was detained immediately, while another fled on foot and was later apprehended.

A third migrant managed to enter a waiting vehicle, which nearly struck various RCMP members while trying to drive away, police said. Both the migrant and the driver surrendered to authorities ten days later.

A Cuban national, Alexander Cardenas, was assessed by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and found not eligible to enter Canada. He was returned to the United States.

His wife, Yenny Justo, who was driving the vehicle, was arrested and charged with one count of dangerous operation of a conveyance, as well as one count of conspiracy and fail to report under the Customs Act, officials said. Continue…

Ontario is exploring the use of involuntary addictions treatment for individuals in the correctional system as part of its bail reform initiative to crack down on crime.

The move coincides with the May 1 presentation of a justice bill in the legislature that the government is branding as tough on crime.

Health Minister Sylvia Jones says the government is proposing mandatory treatment for those in jail, on probation, and on parole who are struggling with addictions.

The province will investigate the methods for implementation, assess the associated costs, determine the assistance required from the federal government to execute these measures, and take into account the experiences of other jurisdictions, Jones said at a May 1 press conference.

“There’s no doubt that there has been an increase in the use of illegal and, frankly, deadly drugs in our communities and, yes, in our corrections facilities,” Jones said. “And we need to do the work to make sure that any programs that we bring forward are actually going to help.”

She noted that many of the measures in the legislation are focused on individuals who have mental health and addiction issues. Continue…

RCMP Investigating Liberal Candidate’s Chinese ‘Bounty’ Comment

The federal police force says it is investigating comments made by former Liberal MP Paul Chiang who suggested his then rival, Tory candidate Joe Tay, should be brought to the Chinese consulate to collect a bounty placed on his head.

The democracy advocacy group Hong Kong Watch had written to the RCMP on March 31 asking for an investigation into Chiang’s comments, which had been made weeks earlier during a Chinese cultural media conference.

Hong Kong Watch released a letter on May 1 from RCMP Commissioner Michael Duheme that said the RCMP is “currently investigating the matter and will take appropriate action.”

“Foreign actor interference, including instances of transnational repression, continues to be a pervasive threat in Canada,” Duheme said in the letter, dated April 24. Continue…

Man rescued after small plane lands in Lake Ontario near Tommy Thompson Park

A 49-year-old man was fortunate to escape with only minor injuries after being rescued when a small plane landed in the water near Tommy Thompson Park on Friday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded just before 2:30 p.m. and found a small privately owned plane in the water near the Leslie St. Spit in the east end.

Toronto Police said the pilot was the lone person on board.

Toronto Police Marine Unit responders pulled him from the water near the Leslie St. Spit, a human-made five-km peninsula that extends into Lake Ontario.

Cops said the pilot suffered very minor injuries.

Police said the pilot told them that the aircraft lost engine power while on route to Pembroke, Ont.

He tried to return to Billy Bishop island airport, about seven kilometres west of where the plane landed.

Footage and images show the moment the small plane crashed into Lake Ontario. A red and white parachute is visible as the plane is seen going into the water.

The plane involved appears to be a Cirrus SR20, according to a CP24 news report that said it’s the only light aircraft equipped with a parachute system.
