They are deployable field hospitals designed to deal with acute respiratory illness cases and were meant to backstop overflowing hospitals.

But the facilities are now packed away in controlled storage spaces in Brockville and Chesterville, Ont., and the federal government is spending millions of dollars every year to maintain them there.

Manitoba Government Dismantles Encampments, Provides Housing

The government of Manitoba said it has moved 33 people from encampments into housing as part of efforts to shut down and clear out encampments across the province.

The provincial government said the individuals have also been provided supports from community agencies to help them transition from living in encampments to their own homes.

The move has seen 17 encampments cleared in the past three months, according to Housing, Addictions, and Homelessness Minister Bernadette Smith.

The province has put aside $6.4 million to build 67 more social housing units in a partnership with Main Street Project, Siloam Mission, and Sunshine House.

“There should be no chronic homelessness in a rich country like Canada,” Smith said. “We’re bringing more housing online and working with partners to get folks housed with the wraparound supports they need to succeed.”

The province’s plan to move people into homes and shut down encampments was announced in January, where it said it aimed to develop 300 social housing units. Continue…

A Quebec coroner is recommending that diphenhydramine—an antihistamine and sedative sometimes used to sleep better—should be better managed in pharmacies after the overdose death of an 18-year-old man south of Montreal in December 2023.

The young man, whose identity is not revealed in the report made public, died of acute diphenhydramine poisoning at his home in St-Mathias-sur-Richelieu.

On the morning of Dec. 11, 2023, the man was found by his mother in his bed, unconscious and laying on his back. Toxicological analysis found the man had a lethal level of diphenhydramine in his blood.

The drug is the sedating ingredient in some over-the-counter antihistamines including the brand Benadryl, among others. Continue…

Senior cabinet minister Dominic LeBlanc says Prime Minister Mark Carney will be different than Justin Trudeau when it comes to working with Alberta and Saskatchewan, while keeping some environmental policies the provinces have raised concerns about.

LeBlanc’s comments come as both provinces have been ramping up their objections post-election to federal policies that they say restrict their oil and gas sectors.

In an interview on CTV’s Question Period to be aired on May 11, LeBlanc said Carney is engaged in “ongoing conversations” with the two Prairie provinces.

“The fact that he’s saying that we should collaborate in terms of the review approval process for large projects with provinces, one project, one review, not duplicating work that’s done by provinces, this is a significant departure from the previous government,” he said.

“The prime minister has, I think, shown a great deal of understanding and openness to support the economy of these resource-intensive provinces.”

Carney has also “taken a constructive and positive tone with respect to Western Canadian resources and their importance to the Canadian economy,” said LeBlanc, who is the minister of international trade and intergovernmental affairs in Carney’s government. Continue…

A Venus probe re-entered Earth’s atmosphere after 53 years in orbit

A Soviet spacecraft launched in 1972 has crashed into the Indian Ocean, according to Russia’s space agency Roscosmos. The Kosmos 482 probe had been orbiting Earth for over five decades after a failed mission to Venus.

Roscosmos reported that the spacecraft re-entered Earth’s atmosphere on Saturday morning, and fell into the ocean west of Jakarta, Indonesia. The descent was monitored by the Automated Warning System for Hazardous Situations in Near-Earth Space. No damage or injuries were reported.

Kosmos 482 was launched on March 31, 1972, as part of the Soviet Union’s program aimed at exploring Venus. However, due to a malfunction in the upper stage of its launch vehicle, the spacecraft failed to escape Earth’s gravity and remained in an elliptical orbit. Continue…
