Google has given up on smart thermostats in Europe.

The advertising giant last Friday slipped its Euro-plans into a post that announced first-and-second-gen Nest smart thermostats will no longer receive software updates as of October 25, 2025.

The three models that will exit support are 2011’s first-gen Learning Thermostat, 2012’s second-gen Learning Thermostat, and 2014’s European version of the latter .

Google’s change means apps its Nest and Home apps won’t be able to remotely control the thermostats. Users will be able to use the thermostats the old fashioned way: By walking up to it and using their hands.

But even that may not be a great option because a Google support document states that once software and security updates stop flowing “you may experience an unpredictable decline in performance if you attempt to use it continuously.”

If you toss your thermostat, Google will send you a postage-paid shipping label that allows you to post it to a recycling outfit.

Google’s still working on new stuff for its current Nest thermostats, and promised “Later this year you also will be able to create and adjust schedules for these devices in the Google Home app for the first time.”

Google’s post also includes news that it will “no longer launch new Nest thermostats in Europe.”

“Heating systems in Europe are unique and have a variety of hardware and software requirements that make it challenging to build for the diverse set of homes,” Google’s post states.

The web colossus is therefore “enabling a wide range of established smart thermostat companies to build energy devices and experiences that cater to these markets.”

Pakistan's defence minister has claimed that India is preparing to launch a military incursion into Pakistani territory, raising fears of a war between the nuclear-armed neighbours amid escalating tensions in Kashmir.

Fresh fighting erupted last week in Kashmir - a territory that has been disputed between India and Pakistan since the British partition of India in 1947 - after gunmen killed 26 people near the town of Pahalgam in the worst attack on civilians for a quarter of a century.

The shooting, which Indian authorities believe was carried out by Pakistani assailants, prompted a flurry of military and diplomatic action as both sides moved to militarise along the 'Line of Contact' (LoC) that separates Indian- and Pakistani-administered Kashmir.

India launched naval drills, test-fired several long-range missile systems and suspended a key treaty that ensures India supplies Pakistan with water from the Indus River, a provision that is crucial for Pakistan's water supply and agricultural economy.

Pakistan in turn deployed its air force to close its airspace to Indian airlines and has mobilised its army with footage appearing to show artillery batteries and armoured vehicles on their way to the LoC in anticipation of a major conflict.

Both sides have exchanged small arms fire across the LoC for the past four days, according to government and military officials.

Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif today told Reuters in an interview at his office in Islamabad: 'We have reinforced our forces because (an incursion) is something which is imminent now. In that situation some strategic decisions have to be taken, so those decisions have been taken.'

He added that India's rhetoric was ramping up and that Pakistan's military had briefed the government on the possibility of an Indian attack, though he gave no details as to why he thought an incursion by India's forces was in the offing.

Asifs statement came after Pakistan's railway minister, Hanif Abbasi, dramatically declared at the weekend that his nation's nuclear arsenal of more than 130 missiles were 'not kept as models' and were reserved 'only for India'.

'These ballistic missiles, all of them are targeted at you,' he concluded in a chilling warning.

Today, U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) reintroduced the Preventing Elected Leaders from Owning Securities and Investments (PELOSI) Act, which would ban members of Congress from trading or holding individual stocks. The move comes after President Trump announced he would sign such a bill into law if it crossed his desk.

“Members of Congress should be fighting for the people they were elected to serve—not day trading at the expense of their constituents,” stated Senator Hawley. “Americans have seen politician after politician turn a profit using information not available to the general public. It’s time we ban all members of Congress from trading and holding stocks and restore Americans’ trust in our nation’s legislative body.”

The PELOSI Act would ban lawmakers and their spouses from holding, purchasing or selling individual stocks for the duration of the lawmaker’s time in office. Lawmakers would be allowed to invest in diversified mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, or U.S. Treasury bonds while in office.

If passed, current lawmakers would have 180 days to comply with the legislation. Likewise, newly elected members of Congress would be required to comply within 180 days of taking office.

Members who refuse to comply with the PELOSI Act must forfeit any stock profits to the U.S. Department of the Treasury and face monetary penalties imposed by the House and Senate ethics committees.

The Group was chaired by Claudia Buch (Deutsche Bundesbank) and B Gerard Dages (Federal Reserve Bank of New York)The following report presents the Group’s conclusions on structural changes in the banking sector after the crisis. The first message is that while many large advanced economy banks have moved away from trading and cross-border activities, there does not appear to be clear evidence of a systemic retrenchment from core credit provision. Second, bank profitability has declined across countries, and individual banks have experienced persistently weak earnings and poor investor sentiment, suggesting a need for further cost cutting and structural adjustments. Supervisors and authorities should monitor banks’ adjustment, assessing any risks that may emerge, but also play a role in facilitating the process by removing impediments where necessary. Third, in line with the intended direction of the regulatory reforms,

banks have significantly enhanced their balance sheet and funding resilience and curbed their involvement in certain complex activities. Nonetheless, market participants and authorities should not become complacent about the progress to date and press on with the implementation of reform. The adaption of the banking sector to the post-crisis operating landscape warrants ongoing close attention. I hope that this work provides a useful resource by documenting the state of ongoing structural change in banking, and providing a starting point for further in-depth analysis.
