The meaning of EMPATHY is the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another.
You are using a very colloquial form of sacrifice as relating only to holy, which is what is getting you hung up. It doesn't always require holy but could be for selfish reasons too.

Sacrifice is anything but yourself.
It doesn't necessarily need holiness as a motivation or factor. Hope you understand.
