He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. A Travis County judge on Tuesday slashed the bond for Solomun Weldekeal-Araya — a foreign national and 18-wheeler driver — from $1.2 million down to a jaw-dropping $7,000, despite his role in a tragic crash that left five people dead, including a child and a baby.

The deadly pileup occurred last month on Interstate 35 in North Austin, involving 17 vehicles and 17 people, resulting in fiery devastation and multiple injuries.

Victims and their families are now pursuing more than $150 million in damages — but for the Travis County judicial system, the perpetrator gets a wrist slap and a ticket to walk free under laughable conditions.

Weldekeal-Araya, who was initially charged with five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault, allegedly failed a field sobriety test, with officers citing classic symptoms of central nervous system depressant use — bloodshot eyes, mumbled speech, and swaying.

However, subsequent testing revealed no drugs or alcohol in his bloodstream, prompting Democrat judge Tamara Needles to lower the bond.

The intoxication charges are stemming from what prosecutors are arguing is sleeplessness. They also claim anti-depressants might be to blame.

According to KVUE, the bond agreement now requires Weldekeal-Araya to:

Records show Minneapolis schools were overbilled by millions on a transportation contract.

Frontier Transportation Services, LLC is operated by two men named Falmata Bedasso and Abdurahman Kadir, according to secretary of state records. The company, which transports “Homeless and Highly Mobile” (HHM) students, was authorized to receive, at most, $3.6 million from Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) for services through 2027, contract and school board records show. But by early 2025, the district had already been billed well above that amount, according to the most recent contracts and invoices.

In total, all of the invoices provided by the district in response to the request add up to more than $7 million.

I am trying to avoid my own confirmation bias, which is difficult in this case, because when Congressman Mike Waltz was announced as NSA to President-elect Donald Trump, immediately I thought he would be the first to exit the national security team; his ideology just doesn’t mesh right.

Following the fiasco with Signal and his Jeffrey Goldberg foul up, it looked like Waltz was pushed out of the immediate circle of influence and instead told to focus on restructuring the National Security Council. His proximity still exists, buthis immediate role appears -at least outwardly- to have shifted; he seems less influential as a direct emissary for President Trump to foreign intelligence peers and leaders.

I have this horribly annoying affliction to noticing small details and taking notes, and all indications point in that direction. When you start to notice this shift, what becomes evident is within the verbiage used as a proximity person begins describing events as if they were an observer, not a direct participant. [The “we” is lost.] Listen to how Mike Waltz describes current geopolitical events, he sounds like a pundit not a participant.

Trump orders Hegseth, Bondi to consider use of military for domestic operations

President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Monday that orders Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to increase the provision of “military and national security assets” to local law enforcement officials and “determine how military and national security assets” could “most effectively be utilized to prevent crime.”

In Trump’s executive order, titled “Strengthening and Unleashing America’s Law Enforcement to Pursue Criminals and Protect Innocent Civilians,” the president emphasized that his administration is “steadfastly committed to empowering State and local law enforcement to firmly police dangerous criminal behavior and protect innocent citizens.”

Part of Trump’s executive order directed Bondi and Hegseth to consult with Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and other agency leaders to “increase the provision of excess military and national security assets in local jurisdictions to assist State and local law enforcement” within 90 days.

Trump added, “Within 90 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of Defense, in coordination with the Attorney General, shall determine how military and national security assets, training, non-lethal capabilities, and personnel can most effectively be utilized to prevent crime.”

The Independent reported that some opponents of the president’s executive order warned that the order could result in a violation of the Posse Comitatus Act 1878, which was instituted to prevent military forces from engaging in local law enforcement matters.

The Posse Comitatus Act states, “Whoever, except in cases and under circumstances expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress, willfully uses any part of the Army or the Air Force as a posse comitatus or otherwise to execute the laws shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.”

According to The Independent, the Posse Comitatus Act’s restrictions were later extended to both the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy.

In Monday’s executive order, Trump stressed the importance of equipping local law enforcement agencies with the resources necessary to protect American citizens. Trump wrote, “Safe communities rely on the backbone and heroism of a tough and well-equipped police force.”

In his executive order, Trump ordered Bondi and other administration officials to “provide new best practices to State and local law enforcement to aggressively police communities against all crimes,” to expand and improve training opportunities for law enforcement officials, to increase pay and benefits for law enforcement officials, and to increase legal protections for law enforcement officials.

“Deprivation by Design”: Israel Intensifies Mass Killing Campaign in Gaza With Starvation and Daily Strikes

The scale of killing in Gaza is almost impossible to track as the Israeli military bombs and starves Palestinian civilians with impunity.

Three generations of the al-Khour family were wiped out when Israel bombed their family home in the al-Sabra neighborhood in central Gaza at dawn on April 26. The elderly patriarch of the family, Talal al-Khour, his wives, daughters, sons, and grandchildren were all killed in the attack. A total of twenty-two people—including twelve children—perished, their bodies blown apart and buried under the rubble.

"The airstrike occurred at dawn while we were asleep. Suddenly, we woke up to a blast that felt like an earthquake. We rushed into the street and found that the five-story home of the Al-Khour family had turned into a pile of rubble,” Mohammad Al-Ajla, a 37-year-old neighbor who helped retrieve the bodies, told Drop Site News. "As soon as the dust from the strike cleared, neighbors began trying to rescue members of the family. The recovery operation continued for eight straight hours. We saw bodies everywhere. There were children without heads."

With the help of residents in the area, Civil Defense teams were able to retrieve fifteen of the bodies, which were later buried together in a mass grave. The remaining bodies remain trapped under the debris. Emergency rescue crews were forced to dig through the wreckage with their bare hands as a result of Israel denying the entry of equipment into Gaza and deliberately targeting the little machinery available, according to the Civil Defense spokesperson, Mahmoud Bassal.

"We could hear the cries of the wounded trapped under the rubble, but we were helpless to reach them. Over time, the screaming faded, and we no longer knew whether they were still alive or had been killed,” Bassal told Drop Site. "Many lives could have been saved, but the ongoing blockade and the denial of essential tools eliminated every possible chance for rescue.”

Since Israel resumed its scorched earth bombing campaign on March 18, Gaza has been transformed into a desert of death, in which rubble and ruin form the backdrop for an unceasing campaign of mass killing. The Israeli military has carried out multiple airstrikes and shelling across the enclave on a daily basis, pounding homes, displacement camps, cafes, hospitals, charity kitchens, so-called “humanitarian zones,” and other civilian sites.

The scale of the attacks is almost impossible to track. On Wednesday alone, three residential buildings in the Nuseirat refugee camp were bombed; one of the strikes killed six members of one family, including three siblings, all children. In a nearby building, eight people in a single home were killed. In Jabaliya, at least three people from the same family, including two young girls, were killed in Israeli artillery fire. On the coast, west of Gaza City, a fisherman was killed while pulling his boat ashore. In western Khan Younis, an overnight drone strike on a tent killed six people, including children. This is not a comprehensive list and does not even cover a 24-hour period.

Over two days last week, the Israeli military also targeted and bombed over 30 bulldozers and other pieces of heavy machinery. Some of them had been donated during the “ceasefire” to clear rubble, repair critical infrastructure, and rescue people after airstrikes, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The scenes emerging from across Gaza, from Rafah in the south to Beit Hanoun in the north, are staggering in their horror. Children blown apart across rooftops or while riding their bikes; dead bodies strewn across a cafe, some still seated, slumped in their chairs; corpses wrapped in white body bags lined up alongside one another; suicide drones crashing into tents housing sleeping families; screaming parents and wounded children scattered in the streets.

“The massacres do not stop. We are being slaughtered from vein to vein,” Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif said in a social media post.

US Tells World Court Israel Has Right to Starve Gaza

Two months into Israel’s latest siege of Gaza, an American official argued to the International Court of Justice that Tel Aviv is within its rights to deprive Palestinians of food, medicine, and other aid.

Simmons argued Tel Aviv was not required to work with UNRWA to ensure Palestinians have food and other essential goods. “There are serious concerns about UNRWA’s impartiality, including information that Hamas has used UNRWA’s facilities, and that UNRWA’s staff participated in the 7 October terrorist attack against Israel,” he said.

“Occupation law preserves an occupying power’s discretion to address its security interests, including the ability to curtail the activities of third states or organizations that are contrary to its security,” Simmons told the ICJ. “It is clear that Israel has no obligation to permit UNRWA specifically to provide humanitarian assistance.”

While Israel has repeatedly claimed that UNRWA employees participated in the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, a UN inquiry found Tel Aviv was unable to substantiate the accusation.

Over the first two days of the session, a Palestinian official and representatives from several other nations argued that Israel was committing war crimes, including using starvation as a method of warfare.

On Tuesday, South Africa’s representative Jaymion Hendricks argued that “International law prohibits Israel from the use of starvation as a method of warfare, including under siege or blockade, Israel may not collectively punish the protected Palestinian population, which it holds under unlawful occupation.”

Israel has “deployed the full range of techniques of hunger and starvation, perfecting the degree of control suffering and death that it can cause through food systems, leading to this moment of genocide,” he added. “Despite the horrific attempts by Israeli officials to characterize them otherwise, Palestinians are human beings.”

While Tel Aviv did not send an official to mount a defense to the court, Israel did submit a written brief. It claimed that the case “is part of an abusive and systematic campaign that regrettably weaponizes international law, and international legal institutions, with the aim of depriving Israel of fundamental rights accorded to all sovereign states, including the right to defend itself.”

However, many Israeli officials have clearly stated that the goal in Gaza is to ethnically cleanse Palestinians from their homeland, and they would be willing to deny the population food to achieve that end.

The Israeli Defense Ministry recently opened an office dedicated to resettling Palestinians outside of Israel, while Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said that Tel Aviv could empty the Strip of Palestinians within a year by expelling 5,000 to 10,000 people per day.

Israel’s hawkish National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said he discussed bombing Gaza’s remaining stockpiles of food with Republicans in Congress while on a trip to the US. The Israeli politician said his plan had support from the American lawmakers.

President Donald Trump on Thursday ousted his national security adviser, Mike Waltz — only to name Waltz as his next United Nations ambassador.

Waltz, a former Florida GOP congressman, has served as national security adviser for less than four months. He became embroiled in controversy in March, after he inadvertently added a journalist to a Signal group chat on which senior Trump officials discussed sensitive military plans.

He will now have to go through a Senate confirmation vote to take the spot that his former House Republican colleague, Rep. Elise Stefanik, initially planned to occupy. Stefanik withdrew from consideration in March as Republicans worried over whether they could hold her New York seat in a special election.

Trump announced the Waltz departure on Truth Social on Thursday afternoon and named Secretary of State Marco Rubio as an interim replacement national security adviser. Trump’s moves came as a surprise to even some within his administration.

As for Waltz, the tensions that led to his remarkable shift in positions began before the so-called Signalgate affair, according to four people familiar with the situation.

One of those people told Semafor that Waltz’s traditionally hawkish views of national security created tension with more isolationist players in the White House — and said that the former Green Beret was on the outs in Trump’s network even before the group chat flap.

This person added, in a sentiment confirmed by two others Semafor spoke with, that Waltz’s style was seen as imperious and abrasive by White House colleagues.

A second of the four people described Waltz as too “neocon” for others in the administration and said White House chief of staff Susie Wiles had raised concerns about the ousted national security adviser to others in the administration.

Another Waltz critic who has made her displeasure very public, right-wing agitator Laura Loomer, celebrated his departure from the White House on X, as well as the expected ouster of Waltz deputy Alex Wong.

“SCALP,” she posted. It was an apparent reference to what Trump ally Steve Bannon described as a “no scalps policy” the president had embraced in recent weeks, keeping Waltz on the job in order to avoid giving his critics a victory after the Signal debacle.

One subtle sign of Waltz’s imminent exit came earlier this week, when he was spotted with Trump at Joint Base Andrews but did not join the president’s Air Force One trip to Michigan. He didn’t take the trip after Trump told him not to, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Even before Rubio’s selection as a replacement became official, speculation was mounting about who might replace Waltz.

The news was met with bated breath in European capitals, where officials are waiting to make a judgment call on what it means until a successor is named. “Let’s see who is going to be there instead,” one senior European official said in a text message.

One potentially polarizing name in the mix: Ric Grenell, the current envoy for special missions who recently lost a foothold on US-Venezuela relations to Rubio.

MLB Star Mariano Rivera and Wife Clara Added as Defendants in Child Sex Abuse Suit

The initial January filing, alleging a girl was sexually abused by an older minor at church-connected events, previously did not name the Riveras as defendants

Mariano Rivera and his wife Clara Rivera have been added as defendants in a January civil lawsuit accusing them of covering up child sex abuse.

As previously reported, the 55-year-old New York Yankees Hall of Famer and Clara were named in a lawsuit filed earlier this year in New York Supreme Court, and were alleged to have ignored the sexual abuse of a young girl who was a member of his Refuge of Hope Church in Westchester County, N.Y.

At the time, the Riveras' attorney, Joseph A. Ruta, told the New York Post in a statement that "allegations that they knew about or failed to act on reports of child abuse are completely false."

Now, the Riveras have been added as defendants in an amended court filing, the girl's attorney, Adam Horowitz, initially told ESPN. Horowitz said details in the filing have remained largely the same.

PEOPLE has since obtained the amended document, which was filed on April 25 and lists both Mariano and Clara as defendants — along with Refuge of Hope, which was previously named as a defendant along with an LLC that included the couple's former home address. As Horowitz told ESPN, the couple was later named as defendants after it was determined they were not connected with the LLC, which is now no longer named as a defendant.

An attorney for the Riveras did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on Thursday, May 1.

The filing alleged that a minor born in 2007, identified as Jane Doe, was sexually abused by an older female minor (identified as "MG") at the Ignite Life Center in Gainesville, Fla. during a 2018 summer internship program affiliated with the Rivera’s church. The updated complaint claimed that the Riveras "separately isolated and intimidated Jane Doe to remain silent about her negative experiences at the summer internship, including her abuse by MG, to avoid causing trouble for Refuge of Hope and the Ignite Life Summer Internship."

Per Refuge of Hope's website, Clara served as its head pastor.

According to the complaint, the internship program "required children to reside at Ignite Life Center for the duration of the program, without parental supervision," and the church “paid Jane Doe’s expenses” in order to “ensure she could attend the summer program.” The complaint alleges that, during a summer 2018 BBQ at the Riveras' Brook View home, MG again abused Jane Doe.

It also alleges that Jane Doe was sexually abused by Ruben Tavarez Jr., the son of the Refuge of Hope associate pastor, in August 2021.

Lead Singer of Famed Rock Band Dead at 66

Another rock legend has fallen.

Mike Peters, the lead singer of the Welsh rock band The Alarm, has died, BBC reports.

While Peters’ cause of death is not known at this time, The Alarm front man struggled with blood cancer for 30 years in the wake of his diagnosis with lymphoma in 1995. Aside from battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Peters was diagnosed twice with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, which returned in 2015 before he went into remission.

Peters was best known as the co-founder and the frontman of the rock group The Alarm, which started performing in 1977 as their former moniker, The Toilets. After settling on their official name, The Alarm would go on to play together from 1981 to 1991 and sell an estimated five million records.

The Alarmwould go on to release hit songs like "Sixty Eight Guns," "Spirit of '76," and “Sold Me Down the River." Peters left the group in 1991 to embark on a solo career.

Aside from music, Peters was also a founder of theLove Hope Strength Foundation, a charity organization dedicated to helping people fight cancer. Peters would often using live music shows as a means to recruit bone marrow donors. For his charity work to benefit cancer care, Peters was awarded the MBE in 2019. Peters is currently survived by his sons Dylan, 20 and Evan, 18.

Christian organization plagued by allegations of child sex abuse faces another lawsuit

A Florida-based Christian organization with a history of child sex abuse allegations against it has been hit with a lawsuit claiming one of its missionaries sexually assaulted a minor overseas 15 years ago.

Ethnos360, a nonprofit formerly known as New Tribes Mission, sends missionaries and their families throughout the globe. In 2019, multiple women told NBC News that they had been sexually abused decades earlier by their “dorm dads” — missionaries who were supposed to care for children at the mission’s boarding schools while their parents served in foreign countries.

The group settled several suits related to those allegations and issued a public apology to the abuse survivors following the 2019 NBC News report. It also said it had “incorporated significant child safety training” after an independent party commissioned by New Tribes Mission shared recommendations in 2010 amid the abuse allegations.

But Wednesday's lawsuit, filed in Circuit Court in Seminole County, Florida, says the group “failed to offer any care or professional assistance” to the family of an American child who came forward to report inappropriate sexual conduct in 2012, two years after those recommendations were issued.

The girl, Kayla McClain, is now 24, lives in Michigan and recently graduated from nursing school. NBC News does not normally identify alleged victims of sexual assault, but McClain opted to be identified by her full name in the legal filing.

“I’m tired of being quiet and tired of being invisible,” McClain said in her first public remarks about the case. “I just want people to know what really happened and that there’s actually a face and a name behind what’s going on.”

David Doyle, an attorney for Ethnos360, said the group “takes allegations of this nature very seriously” and “categorically denies any merit to allegations made against it.”

McClain was around 5 years old in 2005 when she met her alleged abuser, Nate Horling, the lawsuit said. Like McClain and her family, Horling lived with his wife and children in housing in Indonesia provided by what was then New Tribes Mission. He had a child about McClain’s age whom McClain would play with, the legal complaint said, adding that the alleged abuse by Horling started with inappropriate touching while McClain was playing with his child. Afterward, Horling would allegedly tell McClain “he was sorry and instructed her not to tell anyone and blamed her for what occurred,” the lawsuit said.

The abuse escalated after both families relocated to a different part of Indonesia in 2009, where Horling later allegedly sexually assaulted McClain in a closet, according to the lawsuit.

Horling, who is not named as a defendant, told NBC News in an email that he “absolutely” denies all allegations.

The lawsuit comes less than a year after another legal filing against Ethnos360, which alleged the group failed to protect a girl from repeated sexual misconduct by a peer at its missionary training center in Missouri in 2016 and failed to adequately investigate the abuse allegations.

Five more accusers come forward against SoCal school counselor charged with molesting children

A former Ventura County school counselor, who was arrested in November on suspicion of molesting eight young children, has been charged with 14 additional felony counts of lewd acts upon a child after five more victims came forward, authorities said.

David Lane Braff, Jr., 42, of Thousand Oaks now faces 31 counts of child molestation involving a total of 13 male and female victims, according to an amended criminal complaint filed Tuesday by prosecutors from the Ventura County District Attorney's Office. He is set to be arraigned on the new charges on May 21, prosecutors said.

Braff was initially accused of molesting eight students ages 6 to 10 in a school office at McKevett Elementary School in Santa Paula, where he worked as a counselor from 2015 to 2019. In November he pleaded not guilty to 17 felony counts of lewd acts upon a child under 14 years old, according to court documents.

Since his arrest, four additional victims have come forward from from McKevett Elementary School. In addition, a fifth new victim has come forward who was allegedly abused between 2004 and 2005, while Braff was employed at the Conejo Recreation and Park District in Thousand Oaks.

"The defendant is now accused of molesting even more young victims across multiple years and locations," Ventura Dist. Atty. Eric Nasarenko said in a statement. "Our investigators and prosecutors remain committed to uncovering the full extent of this defendant’s crimes, and we urge anyone with information to contact our office."

Over the last 24 years, Braff has worked at 10 different school districts and youth sports facilities in Ventura and Los Angeles counties, prosecutors said. He has held numerous positions including counselor, sports coach, child-care assistant, substitute teacher and behavioral therapist.

At the time of his arrest, Braff was working as an assistant principal and school counselor at Ingenium Charter Middle School in Winnetka, prosecutors said.

He faces sentencing enhancements alleging that he took advantage of a position of trust, preyed on particularly vulnerable victims and committed the crimes with planning and sophistication.

Prosecutors are continuing to seek additional victims and encourage anyone with information related to Braff's alleged abuse to contact Investigator Greg Webb at (805) 477-1627.

Two of President Donald Trump’s biggest allies in the Senate are sharply criticizing Medicaid policy changes under consideration in the House, a sign of further Republican friction ahead over the health insurance program for low-income Americans.

Sens. Bernie Moreno of Ohio and Josh Hawley of Missouri both warnedin interviews that proposalsto cut the federal government’s share of the costs in states that have expanded Medicaid, and to otherwise cap Medicaid expansion spending, could lead to coverage losses. Moreno bluntly told Semafor that both ideas amount to “cutting benefits.”

“We don’t need to cut benefits.And it actually really infuriates me to hear people here talking about that, because it stresses people out. This is life and death for them,” Moreno said.

There’s a growing consensus among Senate Republicans about paring back their party’s pursuit of Medicaid savings, limiting the changes to work requirements for able-bodied people who are eligible for expansion coverage and cutting off benefits from undocumented people. Moreno also said Congress can save money by improving technology and processes within the program and discouraging emergency room visits for relatively minor ailments.

But the current framework for the GOP’s tax cut bill directs the House committee in charge of Medicaid to find $880 billion in savings over 10 years, a difficult target to hit without directly cutting benefits.

Medicaid-protective Republicans like Moreno and Hawley appear to have a notable ally in President Donald Trump.

“President Trump said, ‘We’re not cutting benefits,’” said Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo. “I just don’t think that that’s anything they’re going to contemplate. There could be reforms within the system. I think work requirements are probably the biggest and easiest target to go do.”

Hawley said he personally discussed Medicaid with the president before even supporting the budget blueprint for the tax bill, adding: “The House ought to listen to the president.”

Republicans predict there are more than a dozen senators on their side who are averse to anything that can be construed as a benefit cut.Moreno said “there’s not 50 votes for any kind of cuts in benefits. That’s just a fact.”

Many House members — and some senators — who are comfortable with cutting federal spending on the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion hail from states that did not expand the program during the Obama administration.

Among the 40 states that did, the federal government pays 90% of the share of the expanded program, which includes people who were not eligible for coverage before Obamacare.

“The toughest thing we have to do is figure out where we can save money. It’s interesting: When I’m back home, everyone wants us to balance the budget, but at the same time, ‘Don’t take away my subsidy,’” said Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan.

Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., and other Republicans, like Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves, have discussed gradually lowering the federal share of Medicaid costs. They argue that states could choose to spend more money to continue funding the program rather than see people lose coverage.

House Energy and Commerce Chair Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., told Axios the GOP is also looking at capping federal funding in expansion states. House Speaker Mike Johnson, meanwhile, sounded cool to the idea of cutting the federal share when Politico asked.

Moreno said work requirements, improving technology and innovation and waste, fraud and abuse need to be the focus on Medicaid.“We don’t need anything more than that. And, look, the whole point of the America First agenda is to make sure that we use your tax dollars to benefit American citizens. So there’s no need to take away benefits from Americans,” he said.

Ukraine hit by new military corruption scandal

The country’s security agency has detained four suspects after 120,000 faulty mortar rounds were sent to the frontline

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has arrested several military officials for their alleged involvement in a corruption scheme that resulted in tens of thousands of defective mortar shells being sent to the front line.Ukraine has long been notorious for rampant corruption, a problem exacerbated when large military procurement orders began being placed.

Complaints from frontline soldiers about subpar 120mm mortar shells began to pour in to Kiev late last year.Service members claimed that only one in ten shells exploded due to a smorgasbord of problems, including wet powder and faulty fuses. Local media later reported that as many as 100,000 shells had been recalled, and that authorities had launched an investigation.

In a statement on Tuesday, the SBU said that a defense plant in Dnepropetrovsk Region supplied the military with 120,000 mortar rounds unsuitable for combat use. Without identifying the facility,the agency said that it had detained four suspects, including the plant’s director general, his deputy, as well as two military officials who were responsible for receiving the rounds and overseeing production.

According to the SBU, the plant signed a contract with Ukraine’s Defense Procurement Agency to produce 120,000 mortar shells.However, in some cases, the plant used “low-quality materials and performed defective work”to produce the shells.

This way, the agency continued, “the organizers of the scheme tried to reduce the cost of production in order to get a greater profit from the state order.”Moreover, the military officials overseeing the process were involved in the scheme anddeliberately “turned a blind eye” to the defective batch of ammunition, the statement read.

The defendants are now charged with aggravated obstruction of the military leading to severe consequences, and face 15 years in prison.

Last year, several media reports indicated thatthe mortar shell crisis was only one facet of the difficultiesin the Ukrainian defense industry, which was struggling to begin mass domestic productiondue to logistics and personnel issues.

Corruption has also been a long-standing issue in Ukraine’s defense sector, especially after the escalation of the conflict with Russia in 2022. Kiev’s Western backers have acknowledged the problem,citing graft as a major obstacle to the country’s EU integration.

Earlier this week, US National Security Adviser Michael Waltz called for proper oversight of American aid to Kiev, calling Ukraine “one of the most corrupt countries in the world.”
