In his continued mission to save the world, in 1968 David became co-editor of the new left magazine Ramparts. While at Ramparts, David developed a close friendship with Huey P. Newton, founder of the Black Panther Party. As part of their work together, David helped raise money for, and assisted the Panthers with, the running of a school for poor children in Oakland. He later recommended that Newton hire his friend Betty Van Patter as bookkeeper; she was then working for Ramparts. In December 1974, Van Patter's body was found floating in San Francisco Harbor; she had been murdered by the Panthers for knowing too much.
The murder forced David to confront a truth that he had long suspected. It made clear to him that the pursuit of a Marxist utopia was a false and unachievable goal. Diabolically, the goal created a religion. The religion then cloaked the movement’s leaders with an invincible moral standing enabling them to commit atrocities with impunity for their own gain. He was horrified that he had been part of it and it caused him to rethink his entire life.

Federal Judge Issues PERMANENT Injunction, Bars Trump Administration From Using Alien Enemies Act to Remove Venezuelan Gang Members
A federal judge on Thursday issued a permanent injunction and barred the Trump Administration from using the Alien Enemies Act (AEA) to remove Venezuelan gang members and transport them to El Salvador.
US District Judge Fernando Rodriguez, a Trump appointee, called the President’s invocation of the Alien Enemies Act “unlawful.”
According to Judge Rodriguez, the AEA only applies when the US is at war and under an armed attack.
“The Proclamation exceeds the scope of the statute and, as a result, is unlawful,” Judge Rodriguez said, according to Politico. “[Administration officials] do not possess the lawful authority under the AEA, and based on the Proclamation, to detain Venezuelan aliens, transfer them within the United States, or remove them from the country.”

Deputy National Security Adviser Alex Wong has reportedly been dismissed as well
US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has been fired, Fox News reported on Thursday, citing its sources. The White House has not made any public comments on the issue.
Waltz was among the National Security Council’s “other staffers,” who got caught in the latest “purge,” the broadcaster said, adding that his deputy, Alex Wong, had been fired as well. The media outlet did not name the exact reason for the move but pointed to the criticism the national security adviser faced over his role in the so-called ‘Signalgate’ scandal in March.
At the time, The Atlantic reported it had accessed an internal chat involving members of US President Donald Trump’s administration, who were discussing attacks on Yemen’s Houthi militants. The leak was then attributed to Waltz, who mistakenly saved the contact of the magazine’s editor, Jeffrey Goldberg, under an incorrect name and then sent him an invite.
The national security adviser later admitted his mistake in an interview with Fox News. “I take full responsibility. I built the group. … It's embarrassing. We're going to get to the bottom of it,” he said at that time.
Later on Thursday, Axios reported that Waltz had not left his position yet, but is expected to do so in the near future. Waltz had not been removed as of Thursday morning, a White House official told the media outlet, although a Trump adviser and another official said that his departure is expected soon.
When asked about Waltz’ potential dismissal earlier this week, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that “we are not going to respond to reporting from anonymous sources.” Trump himself told journalists in early April that certain National Security Council members had been fired following the incident but maintained that there were few of them and that he still trusted the team.

A Travis County judge on Tuesday slashed the bond for Solomun Weldekeal-Araya — a foreign national and 18-wheeler driver — from $1.2 million down to a jaw-dropping $7,000, despite his role in a tragic crash that left five people dead, including a child and a baby.
The deadly pileup occurred last month on Interstate 35 in North Austin, involving 17 vehicles and 17 people, resulting in fiery devastation and multiple injuries.
Victims and their families are now pursuing more than $150 million in damages — but for the Travis County judicial system, the perpetrator gets a wrist slap and a ticket to walk free under laughable conditions.
Weldekeal-Araya, who was initially charged with five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault, allegedly failed a field sobriety test, with officers citing classic symptoms of central nervous system depressant use — bloodshot eyes, mumbled speech, and swaying.
However, subsequent testing revealed no drugs or alcohol in his bloodstream, prompting Democrat judge Tamara Needles to lower the bond.
The intoxication charges are stemming from what prosecutors are arguing is sleeplessness. They also claim anti-depressants might be to blame.
According to KVUE, the bond agreement now requires Weldekeal-Araya to:

Wear a GPS monitor for only 90 days

American humans can now “verify their World ID” by getting their eyeballs scanned by NVIDIA-powered AI Orbs.
Open AI is partnering with Visa for a “World Visa Card” this summer exclusively for people who use World to get their iris scans.
“We wanted a way to make sure that humans stayed special and central, in a world where the internet was going to have lots of AI-driven content,” Altman said at a live demo.
The World iris scanners will be set up at partner organization locations, including Razer retail stores.
A small amount of free cryptocurrency offered as a lure to get eyeballs scanned has helped World scan and verify 12 million people worldwide so far.

Almost all of the Canadian parliamentary candidates who endorsed the Vote Palestine policy platform lost their riding race in Monday's federal election, according to preliminary results, with a total of 25 of the 362 candidates securing seats – though some candidates defeated their pro-Palestinian peers.
Eighteen of the 28 Liberal Party candidates who endorsed the platform will be part of the 45th parliament, many of them being incumbents. Only 10% of the incoming Liberal Party 169 MPs endorsed the platform, which called for a two-way arms embargo against Israel, Canadian recognition of a Palestinian state, and an end to all engagement with Israeli settlements and a ban on ownership of properties in those towns. Six Liberals endorsed by the Vote Palestine program lost to New Democratic Party candidates that had also signed the pledge.
Singh was won of the many NDP candidates who endorsed the Vote Palestine platform that failed to secure their seats, in an election that saw a catastrophic fall from 24 to 7 seats – which would disqualify them from having a recognized parliamentary caucus. Six of the 216 NDP candidates that endorsed the Vote Palestine platform won their seats, including MP Heather McPherson, who led the push for a successful non-binding motion for an arms embargo against Israel. Trump orders Hegseth, Bondi to consider use of military for domestic operations
President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Monday that orders Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to increase the provision of “military and national security assets” to local law enforcement officials and “determine how military and national security assets” could “most effectively be utilized to prevent crime.”
In Trump’s executive order, titled “Strengthening and Unleashing America’s Law Enforcement to Pursue Criminals and Protect Innocent Civilians,” the president emphasized that his administration is “steadfastly committed to empowering State and local law enforcement to firmly police dangerous criminal behavior and protect innocent citizens.”
Part of Trump’s executive order directed Bondi and Hegseth to consult with Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and other agency leaders to “increase the provision of excess military and national security assets in local jurisdictions to assist State and local law enforcement” within 90 days.
Trump added, “Within 90 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of Defense, in coordination with the Attorney General, shall determine how military and national security assets, training, non-lethal capabilities, and personnel can most effectively be utilized to prevent crime.”
The Independent reported that some opponents of the president’s executive order warned that the order could result in a violation of the Posse Comitatus Act 1878, which was instituted to prevent military forces from engaging in local law enforcement matters.
The Posse Comitatus Act states, “Whoever, except in cases and under circumstances expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress, willfully uses any part of the Army or the Air Force as a posse comitatus or otherwise to execute the laws shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.”
According to The Independent, the Posse Comitatus Act’s restrictions were later extended to both the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy.
In Monday’s executive order, Trump stressed the importance of equipping local law enforcement agencies with the resources necessary to protect American citizens. Trump wrote, “Safe communities rely on the backbone and heroism of a tough and well-equipped police force.”
In his executive order, Trump ordered Bondi and other administration officials to “provide new best practices to State and local law enforcement to aggressively police communities against all crimes,” to expand and improve training opportunities for law enforcement officials, to increase pay and benefits for law enforcement officials, and to increase legal protections for law enforcement officials.

“Deprivation by Design”: Israel Intensifies Mass Killing Campaign in Gaza With Starvation and Daily Strikes
The scale of killing in Gaza is almost impossible to track as the Israeli military bombs and starves Palestinian civilians with impunity.
Three generations of the al-Khour family were wiped out when Israel bombed their family home in the al-Sabra neighborhood in central Gaza at dawn on April 26. The elderly patriarch of the family, Talal al-Khour, his wives, daughters, sons, and grandchildren were all killed in the attack. A total of twenty-two people—including twelve children—perished, their bodies blown apart and buried under the rubble.
"The airstrike occurred at dawn while we were asleep. Suddenly, we woke up to a blast that felt like an earthquake. We rushed into the street and found that the five-story home of the Al-Khour family had turned into a pile of rubble,” Mohammad Al-Ajla, a 37-year-old neighbor who helped retrieve the bodies, told Drop Site News. "As soon as the dust from the strike cleared, neighbors began trying to rescue members of the family. The recovery operation continued for eight straight hours. We saw bodies everywhere. There were children without heads."
With the help of residents in the area, Civil Defense teams were able to retrieve fifteen of the bodies, which were later buried together in a mass grave. The remaining bodies remain trapped under the debris. Emergency rescue crews were forced to dig through the wreckage with their bare hands as a result of Israel denying the entry of equipment into Gaza and deliberately targeting the little machinery available, according to the Civil Defense spokesperson, Mahmoud Bassal.
"We could hear the cries of the wounded trapped under the rubble, but we were helpless to reach them. Over time, the screaming faded, and we no longer knew whether they were still alive or had been killed,” Bassal told Drop Site. "Many lives could have been saved, but the ongoing blockade and the denial of essential tools eliminated every possible chance for rescue.”
Since Israel resumed its scorched earth bombing campaign on March 18, Gaza has been transformed into a desert of death, in which rubble and ruin form the backdrop for an unceasing campaign of mass killing. The Israeli military has carried out multiple airstrikes and shelling across the enclave on a daily basis, pounding homes, displacement camps, cafes, hospitals, charity kitchens, so-called “humanitarian zones,” and other civilian sites.
The scale of the attacks is almost impossible to track. On Wednesday alone, three residential buildings in the Nuseirat refugee camp were bombed; one of the strikes killed six members of one family, including three siblings, all children. In a nearby building, eight people in a single home were killed. In Jabaliya, at least three people from the same family, including two young girls, were killed in Israeli artillery fire. On the coast, west of Gaza City, a fisherman was killed while pulling his boat ashore. In western Khan Younis, an overnight drone strike on a tent killed six people, including children. This is not a comprehensive list and does not even cover a 24-hour period.
Over two days last week, the Israeli military also targeted and bombed over 30 bulldozers and other pieces of heavy machinery. Some of them had been donated during the “ceasefire” to clear rubble, repair critical infrastructure, and rescue people after airstrikes, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The scenes emerging from across Gaza, from Rafah in the south to Beit Hanoun in the north, are staggering in their horror. Children blown apart across rooftops or while riding their bikes; dead bodies strewn across a cafe, some still seated, slumped in their chairs; corpses wrapped in white body bags lined up alongside one another; suicide drones crashing into tents housing sleeping families; screaming parents and wounded children scattered in the streets.
“The massacres do not stop. We are being slaughtered from vein to vein,” Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif said in a social media post.

US Tells World Court Israel Has Right to Starve Gaza
Two months into Israel’s latest siege of Gaza, an American official argued to the International Court of Justice that Tel Aviv is within its rights to deprive Palestinians of food, medicine, and other aid.
Joshua Simmons, a senior legal adviser at the US State Department, argued to the World Court that international law “does not impose any unqualified obligations on an occupying power” with respect to humanitarian assistance provided by the UN, international organizations, and third states.
The UN’s top court is holding five days of hearings to decide what obligations Israel has to the Palestinians under its military occupation. The UN General Assembly asked the court to consider whether Tel Aviv is required to allow the UN Palestinian aid agency, UNRWA, to bring food, medicine, and other basic survival needs into Gaza.
Simmons argued Tel Aviv was not required to work with UNRWA to ensure Palestinians have food and other essential goods. “There are serious concerns about UNRWA’s impartiality, including information that Hamas has used UNRWA’s facilities, and that UNRWA’s staff participated in the 7 October terrorist attack against Israel,” he said.
“Occupation law preserves an occupying power’s discretion to address its security interests, including the ability to curtail the activities of third states or organizations that are contrary to its security,” Simmons told the ICJ. “It is clear that Israel has no obligation to permit UNRWA specifically to provide humanitarian assistance.”
While Israel has repeatedly claimed that UNRWA employees participated in the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, a UN inquiry found Tel Aviv was unable to substantiate the accusation.
Over the first two days of the session, a Palestinian official and representatives from several other nations argued that Israel was committing war crimes, including using starvation as a method of warfare.
On Tuesday, South Africa’s representative Jaymion Hendricks argued that “International law prohibits Israel from the use of starvation as a method of warfare, including under siege or blockade, Israel may not collectively punish the protected Palestinian population, which it holds under unlawful occupation.”
Israel has “deployed the full range of techniques of hunger and starvation, perfecting the degree of control suffering and death that it can cause through food systems, leading to this moment of genocide,” he added. “Despite the horrific attempts by Israeli officials to characterize them otherwise, Palestinians are human beings.”
While Tel Aviv did not send an official to mount a defense to the court, Israel did submit a written brief. It claimed that the case “is part of an abusive and systematic campaign that regrettably weaponizes international law, and international legal institutions, with the aim of depriving Israel of fundamental rights accorded to all sovereign states, including the right to defend itself.”
However, many Israeli officials have clearly stated that the goal in Gaza is to ethnically cleanse Palestinians from their homeland, and they would be willing to deny the population food to achieve that end.
The Israeli Defense Ministry recently opened an office dedicated to resettling Palestinians outside of Israel, while Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said that Tel Aviv could empty the Strip of Palestinians within a year by expelling 5,000 to 10,000 people per day.
Israel’s hawkish National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said he discussed bombing Gaza’s remaining stockpiles of food with Republicans in Congress while on a trip to the US. The Israeli politician said his plan had support from the American lawmakers.
