On 10 April 2010, a Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft operating Polish Air Force Flight 101 crashed near the Russian city of Smolensk, killing all 96 people on board.

Among the victims were the president of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, and his wife, Maria; the former president of Poland-in-exile, Ryszard Kaczorowski; the chief of the Polish General Staff and other senior Polish military officers;

the president of the National Bank of Poland; Polish government officials; 18 members of the Polish parliament; senior members of the Polish clergy; and relatives of victims of the Katyn massacre.

The group was arriving from Warsaw to attend an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the massacre, which took place not far from Smolensk.

The pilots were attempting to land at Smolensk North Airport — a former military airbase — in thick fog, with visibility reduced to about 500 metres (1,600 ft). The aircraft descended far below the normal approach path until it struck trees, rolled, inverted and crashed into the ground, coming to rest in a wooded area a short distance from the runway.[2]

Both the Russian and Polish official investigations found no technical faults with the aircraft, and concluded that the crew failed to conduct the approach in a safe manner in the given weather conditions. The Polish authorities found serious deficiencies in the organization and training of the Air Force unit involved, which was subsequently disbanded. Several high-ranking members of the Polish military resigned following pressure from politicians and the media.

Various conspiracy theories have been circulated alleging that the plane had been deliberately brought down by the Russians in an act of political assassination, and that the 2011 investigations constituted a cover-up and that the Polish government of the time — primarily controlled by the Civic Platform party as opposed to Lech Kaczyński's Law and Justice party — was complicit in or aware of the plot, or at least aided in the efforts to cover it up.[3]

These conspiracy theories are regularly promoted by Law and Justice, particularly by party leader Jarosław Kaczyński (twin brother of Lech Kaczyński) and deputy party leader Antoni Macierewicz.[4][5][6][7]

Following Law and Justice's return to government, a new investigation was opened into the disaster, chaired by Macierewicz; its 2022 conclusion alleged a Russian plot.[8][9]

The new report did not produce any evidence that could conclusively challenge the 2011 reports,[3] was later indicated to have been the subject of tampered evidence,[10] and was revoked in December 2023 after a non-Law and Justice government came into power.[11][12]

China has backed the right of the Palestinian people to use armed force to combat Israel's occupation of their land, calling it an "an inalienable right well founded in international law".

The comments on Thursday were made by the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, during the fourth day of public hearings held by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Representatives of 52 countries are addressing the ICJ on Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

Beijing’s envoy said there were "various people (who) freed themselves from colonial rule" and they could use "all available means, including armed struggle".

He described the Palestinian use of armed resistance as legitimate and not an act of terrorism.

"The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts," Zhang Jun told the court.

In his speech, Jun criticized Israeli policies, characterizing them as “oppression that has severely undermined and impeded the exercises and full realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination".

The ICJ’s public hearings, which will be held until February 26, come after a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an ICJ advisory opinion.

The number of states participating in the oral proceedings is the highest of any case since the ICJ's establishment in 1945 and is separate to the more publicized genocide case brought by South Africa. A panel of 15 judges are expected to take about six months to deliberate before issuing an advisory opinion.

Besides China, other countries scheduled to participate in the hearings include Hungary, France, South Africa and Egypt.

International bodies, including the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union will also take part. Israel will not participate but has sent written observations to the court.

Ukraine won’t win – Vance

It is “weird” to expect Russia to collapse, the US vice president has said

Ukraine is not poised to win the conflict with Russia, US Vice President J.D. Vance has said. He added that it would be naive to expect the larger country’s collapse if fighting continues for several more years.

Vance, a US Marine Corps veteran, has long contended that American support for the war in Ukraine diverts resources from domestic priorities and risks unnecessary conflict with Russia.

“If this doesn’t stop, the Ukrainians aren’t winning the war,” Vance said during an interview with Charlie Kirk during the conservative activist’s podcast on Monday.

“I think there’s this weird idea among the mainstream media that if this thing goes on for just another few years, the Russians will collapse, the Ukrainians will take their territory back, and everything will go back to the way that it was before the war. That is not the reality that we live in,” the vice president said.

“You could have millions of more people killed if this thing goes on for another few years, and it could risk escalating into a nuclear war. It has to stop,” Vance added.

American negotiators are “making progress,” despite the challenges of dealing with both sides, Vance claimed.

“Sometimes you’re incredibly frustrated with Ukrainians. Sometimes you’re incredibly frustrated with the Russians,” Vance said. “And sometimes you just want to throw your hands up, but that’s what President Trump doesn’t let us do.”

Vance’s remarks came as Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russian troops would observe a three-day ceasefire starting on May 8 to commemorate the Soviet Union’s victory over Germany in World War II. Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky responded by accusing Moscow of “manipulation” and called for an immediate 30-day ceasefire.

According to Russia, Ukraine violated both the 30-day ‘energy truce’ brokered by the US last month and the 30-hour Easter truce, despite having promised to respect both arrangements. Putin has argued that in order for a comprehensive ceasefire to succeed, Ukraine must halt its mobilization campaign and the West must stop delivering weapons to Kiev.

A Labor Department program designed to train 16- to 24-year-olds to join the workforce spends more per person annually than Ivy League colleges, but participants wind up making minimum wage on average — raising questions about whether it should continue to exist.

The Job Corps pays teenage runaways, high school dropouts, and twentysomething ex-cons to live in dormitories and receive their GEDs and vocational training. The national cost per graduate was $188,000, with the average graduate staying 13.5 months. Of more than 110 campuses, the 10 least efficient averaged a cost of $385,000 per graduate. Job Corps participants earn $16,695 per year on average after leaving the program, according to new government data.

Nearly $2 billion in federal taxpayer money is spent annually on residential Job Corps campuses, a boon for the for-profit contractors who run them. But the dismal statistics about the program’s efficacy have never been fully public until the Trump administration released a “Transparency Report” last week.

The Job Corps has only a 32% graduation rate, though statistics have typically been calculated using a misleading definition of “graduate,” which bumped the number up slightly to 39%. Of about 30,000 enrollees in the 2023-24 school year, roughly 10,000 were expelled for misconduct, 5,000 were booted for absconding, and 5,000 dropped out for other reasons. The average cost per enrollee, including those who dropped out or were expelled, was $50,000, with an average stay of 7.5 months, working out to $80,000 per year.

The Old Dominion Job Corps campus in Monroe, Virginia, had 95 enrollees in 2023, at a cost of $137,000 each.Only 17 successfully completed the program, amounting to a cost of $764,000 per graduate. Old Dominion is operated by ODLE Management Group LLC, which runs several campuses.

The Daily Wire reported this month that thousands of young people have been the victims of assault and other crimes at Job Corps campuses, including a transgender-identifying girl who was assigned to live with a 23-year-old man who was charged with raping her.

A decade of oversight by government auditors and news media has found that the program attracts criminalsand that some staff look the other way to avoid expelling members, which would lead to lost revenue — or negative attention — which could jeopardize the program.

At the Old Dominion campus with 95 enrollees, the campus officially reported 46 disciplinary infractions. At the Gary campus in San Marcos, Texas, there were 633 disciplinary incidents among 1,191 enrollees. The Oconaluftee campus in Cherokee, North Carolina, had 205 infractions over 162 enrollees, amounting to more than one per person.

The latest quarter of data showed that 72% of graduates were placed in jobs, though past investigations have foundsome Job Corps centers cooking the books on those numbers. The Gadsden campus in Alabama reported a 40% job placement rate, while the Gulfport campus in Mississippi claimed 100%.

Job Corps participants were typically not capable of remaining employed for long. After exiting the program, fewer than half had a job a few months out and were still working that job at the one-year mark.

YouTube is full of videos of Job Corps “students” viciously fighting each other, and participants interviewed by The Daily Wire described a culture that is racially charged, where dysfunction dominates, and “snitches” are physically assaulted. Democrats have moved to lower behavioral standards even further by introducing a bill making it harder to expel students.

Contractors pay recruiting bonuses for finding prospects, and participants are paid to take part in the program in addition to covering their room, board, and medical. One recent graduate told The Daily Wire that contractors conceal the program’s failure to keep the cash coming, and thatmany participants wind up working in menial jobs they could have done without the expensive training.

GEDs are already available at no cost to young adults from most school districts, and unions often offer free training in the trades, making Job Corps’ value proposition dubious — though the nearly $2 billion a year spent on the program means that contractors will lobby hard to preserve their cash cow…

The new catalyst exhibited a power loss of less than 1.1% after an accelerated stress test involving 90,000 square-wave voltage cycles designed to simulate years of real-world driving, where even a 10% loss is typically considered excellent. These superior results project fuel cell lifetimes exceeding 200,000 hours, far surpassing the DOE’s target of 30,000 hours for heavy-duty proton exchange membrane fuel cell systems.

By successfully addressing the dual challenges of catalytic activity and durability, UCLA researchers’ innovative catalyst design holds great promise for the adoption of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty vehicles — an essential step toward reducing emissions and improving fuel efficiency in a sector that accounts for a substantial share of transportation energy use.

The team’s findings built on its earlier success in developing a fuel cell catalyst for light-duty vehicles that demonstrated a lifespan of 15,000 hours — nearly doubling the DOE’s target of 8,000 hours.

The new study’s lead authors are UCLA Ph.D. graduates Zeyan Liu and Bosi Peng, both advised by Huang, whose research group specializes in developing nanoscale building blocks for complex materials, such as fuel cell catalysts. Xiaofeng Duan, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UCLA, and Xiaoqing Pan, a professor of materials science and engineering at UC Irvine, are also authors on the paper. Huang and Duan are both members of the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA.

Other authors on the paper are Yu-Han “Joseph” Tsai and Ao Zhang from UCLA, as well as Mingjie Xu, Wenjie Zang, XingXu Yan and Li Xing from UC Irvine.

UCLA’s Technology Development Group has filed a patent on the technology.

REPORT: Bezos Announces Country of Origin Labeling for All Imported Products Sold on Amazon – Amazon Denies Report

After spending three months riding his bicycle in slow circles at the bottom of the White House driveway while staring in the windows, it was reported this morning that a frustrated Jeff Bezoswould announce his Amazon company would start to label the tariff impact on all products sold by the company.

However, in the angered reaction to President Trump’s tariffs against the majority of his suppliers, what Jeff Bezos likely didn’t realize is the tariff label acts as a “Country of Origin Label” (COOL).

All of the products sold on Amazon that would have tariff cost labeling, are not made in the USA. All of the products without tariff labels would be made in the USA.

Given the nature of American preference toward higher quality products, the “Tariff Label” becomes a DeFacto blacklist. Purchase reviews would proceed accordingly.

WASHINGTON – [T]he e-commerce giant will soon show how much Trump’s tariffs are adding to the price of each product, according to a person familiar with the plan. How Amazon could possibly calculate this ‘cost’ given the complex nature and changing dynamics of total cost of production, currency evaluations, subsidies, and countervailing duty offsets, was an unknown. However, as would be predicted, shares of Amazon stock started to plummet, which led to Amazon quickly denying the report.

WASHINGTON, April 29 (Reuters) – Amazon denied a report on Tuesday that it planned to disclose the cost that U.S. tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump were adding to its products, after the White House blasted the initial story.

Amazon said Tuesday it never considered listing tariffs on its main retail site, and nothing was implemented on any company site. “The team that runs our ultra-low cost Amazon Haul store has considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products,” a company spokesperson said. (more)

PepsiCo has announced that it has already started phasing out artificial ingredients in line with Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr's drive to ban them from foods.

The food giant's CEO, Ramon Laguarta, said that it would continue to transition products such as Cheetos, Lay's, Tostitos and Doritos to be more natural in response to a change in consumer preferences.

Laguarta confirmed that Lay's and Tostitos 'will be out of artificial colors by the end of this year.'

Used in the American food supply for decades to give treats an appealing hue, in recent years concerns have been raised over the health effects of food dyes - including animal studies suggesting they can cause hyperactivity, cancer and other health problems.

PepsiCo, headquartered in Harrison, New York, owns more than 200 food and beverage brands worldwide, including 23 that each generate over $1 billion in sales annually.

Laguarta claims that 60 percent of the company's portfolio currently doesn't contain any artificial dyes and they are working at finding natural alternatives for the rest of the brands.

Among the most scrutinized dyes in the food and beverage industry are Red 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6.

Natural alternatives to these include ingredients like beet juice, pomegranate juice, turmeric, saffron, carrot juice, and paprika. In March, PepsiCo launched 'simply' Ruffles Hot & Spicy crisps, which contain no artificial colors or flavors, reflecting this shift.

The new seasoning still has a fiery kick, thanks to a blend of red pepper and 'bold' spices, but without the signature fiery hue.

Other products from the company which are now free from synthetic dyes and flavorings include 'simply' lines of Lay's, SunChips, Tostitos Tortilla Chips, and Cheetos.

However, many of the brand's popular products are still laced with artificial dyes.

For example, Flamin' Hot Cheetos contain Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, while the Lemon Lime flavor of Gatorade has Yellow 5.

In a bid to make its foods healthier all round, Laguarta highlighted that PepsiCo has 'been leading the transformation of the industry now for a long time on sodium reduction, sugar reduction and better fats'.

FDA Commissioner Dr Marty Makary announced last Tuesday that the agency will phase out the use of eight artificial food dyes in America’s food supply within the next two years.

The massive shakeup will free children from the 'toxic soup' that makes up much of America's food supply, Dr Makary said.

Dr Makary, a trained surgeon, began his remarks by calling attention to an oft-cited review in The Lancet, which reported ties between artificial food dyes and hyperactivity in children.
