Microsoft kills Skype

The company has shut down the once popular service after 22 years, reflecting a shift toward Teams as its main communications app

Pioneering internet calling service Skype officially shut down on May 5, 2025, after nearly 22 years in operation, according to Microsoft. The company is shifting focus to promoting its Teams application instead.

The service was originally launched in August 2003 by Niklas Zennstrom, Janus Friis, and four other Estonian developers, offering users the ability to make free or low-cost voice and video calls over the internet. The program’s name was derived from “sky peer-to-peer” – how the developers described its functionality.

House Pulls Vote On Bill Banning U.S. Citizens From Boycotting Israel

Since October 7th, 2023, Israel's war in Gaza and increasingly unquenchable thirst for war with Iran has seen the Middle Eastern country strengthen its iron-fisted grip over the U.S. political establishment. From proposed laws criminalizing antisemitism under the guise of hate speech to the expansion of the U.S.' involvement in the Middle Eastern theater of war culminating in a direct military conflict with the Houthis in Yemen, the exponential influence of Israel on determining U.S. foreign and domestic policy alike has led to growing opposition over that imbalanced power dynamic. The extent of the blowback from the heightened visibility of the Zionist agenda steering the course of U.S. policymaking has reached new heights as the House Of Representatives decided to suspend a vote on proposed legislation that embodies Israel's pervasive influence on the U.S. government.

The House was scheduled to vote on H.R. 867: The IGO Anti-Boycott Act on Monday under suspension of the Rules Of The House Of Representatives. Voting in that fashion would have required a two-thirds vote for the bill to pass but also would have limited debate on the issues it presented, a microcosm of the subversion of democracy by the interests promoting the legislation. The proposed legislation was introduced by Republican Representative Mike Lawler on January 31st to the House Foreign Affairs Committee and sought to expand existing federal law that makes it illegal for U.S. citizens to participate in boycotts against the State Of Israel. Despite the bipartisan support that H.R. 867 had from its 24 co-sponsors, the outcry against the proposed legislation ahead of the vote it was scheduled for on Monday proved to make bringing it to the floor a bridge too far, even for the most zealous supporters of Israel in the House Of Representatives.

Israel Unleashes Massive Strikes On Yemen With 30 Jets, After Ben Gurion Airport Attack

In the wake of the unprecedented Sunday direct hit on Israel's Ben Gurion international airport by a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis of Yemen, Israeli leadership has vowed to hit back hard. "The attack on Ben Gurion Airport has removed all restrictions from our perspective," Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has stated. He emphasized, "Whoever harms us will be harmed sevenfold" - amid an emergency meeting of Israel's security cabinet. Al Jazeera and regional media say that response has come on Monday. There are reports that 30 Israeli jets are bombing Yemen's main port, along with US military assistance:

Al Jazeera’s Ali Hashem has reported that Houthi-affiliated media has said a total of nine sites have been hit in Hodeidah.

Israeli media has reported both at least 30 Israeli fighter jets were involved in strikes on Yemen, which come a day after the Houthis attacked the Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, with a missile landing near the facility.

A senior US official has said the raids were being carried out in coordination with the US. Al Jazeera could not immediately confirm that information

"We, along with the entire world, are under threat from the Houthis. We will not tolerate it and will take very strong retaliatory action against them," Netanyahu told Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, who is currently in Israel on an official visit.

A readout continued, "We will always remember that they acted under the orders and with the support of their patron — Iran." The prime minister stated further, "We will do what needs to be done to deliver a proper warning to Iran that we cannot tolerate such acts."

Romanian PM resigns after anti-EU nationalist’s win

Marcel Ciolacu has stepped down after a shock presidential rerun that saw right-wing firebrand George Simion take the lead in the first round

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu has announced his resignation and the withdrawal of his Social Democratic Party (PSD) from the ruling coalition, effectively dismantling the country’s pro-EU leadership.

Ciolacu’s move follows the stunning success of George Simion, leader of the right-wing Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), in Sunday’s presidential election rerun. With over 95% of votes counted, Simion is projected to secure 40.52% of the vote, according to the news site G4 Media – well ahead of his pro-EU challengers, former Senator Crin Antonescu and Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan, who both hovered slightly above 20%.

Addressing reporters at his party’s headquarters on Monday, Ciolacu acknowledged that “our coalition has failed to meet its stated objective.”

“I saw the vote cast by Romanians yesterday, and it shows that the coalition, at least in its current form, lacks legitimacy. That is why I have decided that we must leave the coalition, and accordingly, I am submitting my resignation,” the official stated.

The PSD party will also abstain from backing either candidate in the second round of the presidential election slated for May 18. Antonescu, who had been supported by the ruling big tent coalition, comprised of the Social Democrats, the liberal PNL party and the Hungarian minority party UDMR/RMDSZ, failed to secure a place on the run-off ballot.

The “stated objective” Ciolacu referenced likely refers to the coalition’s 2024 campaign promises of stability and pro-EU continuity.

CBS Nominated For Emmy For The Editing Of Controversial Harris Interview

The 46th News & Documentary Emmy Awards nominations are out, and it seems that everyone is talking about just one of them. The “Outstanding Edited Interview” category is hardly a common draw for public or even industry attention. However, one of this year’s nominees is CBS for its primetime special featuring then-Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. The interview is the basis for a $20 billion lawsuit by President Donald Trump against CBS News and its parent company, Paramount Global, alleging election interference due to the biased editing out of an embarrassing answer by Harris.

The nomination seems clearly designed to push back at Trump and rally around CBS.

However, it sends precisely the wrong message for the media at this time.

Many have criticized CBS for its editing of the interview with journalist Bill Whitaker after the network shortened portions of Harris’s answer to a question about the war in Gaza in its initial broadcast. It later provided a full transcript of her remarks online. (For full disclosure, I worked twice under contract with CBS as a legal analyst.)

While I have great reservations about the legal action, I agree with Trump that the interview showed bias and an effort to protect Harris. CBS has been repeatedly accused of such bias, including criticism of the performance of Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan as moderators in the presidential debate. That included reneging on a pledge not to “fact check” and showing manifest bias in their treatment of the candidates.

In the interview, Harris had one of her signature verbal pileups, an incomprehensible effort to explain the U.S. position in the Middle East. The word salad was played on the Sunday show but the primetime interview on 60 Minutes featured only the second half of the answer.

The “Face the Nation” clip showed Harris saying that

“The work that we have done has resulted in a number of movements in that region by Israel that were very much prompted by, or a result of, many things, including our advocacy for what needs to happen in the region.”

The “60 Minutes” clip showed Harris saying more concisely that “we are not going to stop pursuing what is necessary for the United States, to be clear about where we stand on the need for this war to end.”

White House Says It Has “No Timeline” for Releasing Epstein Files

Gaetz asked her point-blank:

“Are you confident, as you sit here now, that there will be an Epstein client list that the American people will see?”

Luna’s response:

“I’m not confident on the Epstein client list because I haven’t had the briefing yet from the Department of Justice. I’ll know more tomorrow on that. But based on what I’m hearing from the attorney general, she keeps saying that she is going to release something, so I’m going to take her at her word for that. Now, whether that something is a full list, we have asked for the full list. We have asked for all the documentation. We are pushing for maximum transparency. But again, we do not hold declassification authority. That is up to the attorney general.”

O’Handley:

My question is about the Epstein files. A couple of months ago, the DOJ released what they called Phase 1 of the Epstein files, and they announced that a lot of those files—the remaining files, probably the bulk of the files—were actually in the New York field office.

They requested that they be returned the day after. Some legacy media reports show that not only were those files returned to the DOJ, but that hundreds of FBI agents are going through them day after day and getting them ready for public release.

Do you have any updates from the DOJ or the FBI on when those files are expected to be released, and also when we might start seeing some arrests of the client list?

Karoline Leavitt:

I can assure you that the Attorney General and her team at the Department of Justice are working on this diligently. For a specific timeline, I’d have to check in with them, and we can certainly do that for you, Rogan, in the effort of transparency.

But I will tell you, the Attorney General is a bulldog. She is someone you want on your team, and when she wants to get something done, she gets it done. I’ve seen her do it in various instances already in her time as Attorney General, and when she makes a promise, she keeps it. So I don’t have a specific timeline for you on that, but I do know that they’re working on it over there. Thank you.

Taibbi: No, State Media And Democracy Don't Go "Hand In Hand." Just The Opposite

The press watchdog Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, or FAIR.org, which I read regularly as a young reporter, weighed in on the NPR debate:

One could look at this threat as part of Trump’s general distrust of major media and desire to seek revenge against outlets he believes have been unfair to him… Going after public broadcasters is also a part of the neo-fascist playbook authoritarian leaders around the world are using to clamp down on dissent and keep the public in the dark, all in the name of protecting the people from partisan reporting. That’s largely because strong public media systems and open democracy go hand in hand.

Titled “Cuts to PBS, NPR Part of Authoritarian Playbook,” the above is either satire or written by someone consciously ignoring the history of state media. Yes, Car Talk and the MacNeil/Lehrer report were cool, but outlets like Neues Deustchland, Télé Zaïre, and Tung Padewat more often went “hand in hand” with fingernail factories or firing squads than democracy. It’s bizarre to see Americans trying to whitewash this.

The office of my first full-time reporting job with the Moscow Times was in the Pravda building. I used to spend lunch hours walking through the doors shown in the photo above, beering up in a cafeteria with writers from the sports section of Komsomolskaya Pravda, at the time the Guinness Book record-holder for world’s largest circulation. With over 21 million readers, “Komsomolka” sure as hell qualified as “strong public media,” but hardly went “hand in hand” with democracy. Like the rest of ex-Soviet media, its owed its circulation to decades of forcing insane lies on readers, like cheery dispatches about the “Doctor’s Plot” purges of 1953:

Indonesia Suspends Sam Altman's WorldCoin Project Over Suspicious Activity

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s digital identity project, World, formerly known as Worldcoin, faces challenges in Indonesia after local regulators temporarily suspended its registration certificates.

After the suspension, Komdigi plans to summon World’s local subsidiaries, PT Terang Bulan Abadi and PT Sandina Abadi Nusantara, to provide clarification on the alleged violations, it stated.

According to a preliminary investigation, World’s PT Terang Bulan Abadi was allegedly operating without TDPSE, while PT Sandina Abadi Nusantara — the subsidiary World was using for providing its services — is allegedly involved in legal misrepresentation.

Indonesian law requires registration by all digital service providers

In the statement, Komdigi emphasized that all digital service providers in Indonesia must receive electronic registration in accordance with local laws.

Additionally, using another entity’s registration is considered a major breach of Indonesian digital operations law, the authority noted.

“Worldcoin services are recorded using TDPSE in the name of another legal entity, namely PT Sandina Abadi Nusantara,” Alexander Sabar, the Komdigi’s director general for digital supervision, said in the announcement, adding:

“Noncompliance with registration obligations and the use of the identity of another legal entity to carry out digital services is a serious violation.”

Community action required

According to Sabar, World’s temporary suspension in Indonesia is a measure taken to prevent potential risks to the community.

He mentioned that the digital ministry is committed to overseeing the digital ecosystem fairly and strictly to ensure the security of the national digital space.

Qatar Accuses Israel of ‘Genocide.’ Netanyahu Fires Back

After Qatar accused Israel of committing a “genocidal war” in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired back, “The time has come for Qatar to stop playing both sides with its double talk and decide if it’s on the side of civilization or if it’s on the side of Hamas barbarism. Israel will win this just war with just means.”

Amichai Chikli, Israel’s Minister for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, echoed, “We made a terrible mistake to negotiate with Qatar and to bring Qatar as negotiators. Qatar is an enemy and a core part of the Muslim Brotherhood ideology.”

Netanyahu’s remarks prompted the official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, — the same country that hosted the leaders of Hamas as they celebrated the terrorist organization massacre over 1200 Israeli on October 7, 2023, the same government that condemned Israel the day of the massacre and the same government that has reportedly funded Hamas with $1.5 billion over the last ten years— to call the remarks “inflammatory,” adding that Qatar stands “with oppressed peoples, defending the rights of civilians regardless of background, and upholding international law without selectivity or exception,” and concluding that Qatar wants “the establishment of an independent state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital” for the Palestinians.

The Qatari government’s ties to terrorists go back decades; as far back as February 2003, less than 17 months after the 9/11 attacks in which Al Qaeda terrorists murdered 3,000 Americans, ABC News reported, in a story titled “Qatari Royal Family Linked to Al Qaeda,” that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the architect of the 9/11 attacks, was aided in his escape from the CIA and FBI by a member of the Qatari royal family: “American officials say the FBI and CIA just missed capturing the al Qaeda leader believed to have organized the 9/11 attacks — and now believed to be planning a new attack against Americans — because it appears he was protected and tipped off by a member of the royal family in Qatar, Abdullah Bin Khalid al-Thani,” ABC News noted.

“After the Sept. 11 attacks, another senior Qaeda operative, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, who may have been the principal planner of the assault on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, was said by Saudi intelligence officials to have spent two weeks in late 2001 hiding in Qatar, with the help of prominent patrons, after he escaped from Kuwait,” The New York Times admitted in 2003.

“Two of al-Qaeda’s most senior financiers are living with impunity in Qatar despite being on a worldwide terrorism blacklist, the American official in charge of sanctions has disclosed,” The Telegraph reported in 2014.

Qatar also owns the Al-Jazeera network, which featured Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif’s call to arms after the October 7 attack and also featured Ismail Haniyeh crowing about Hamas’s “great triumph” after the attacks.

Government report accuses West of bolstering antisemitism by criticizing Israel

Diaspora Ministry dubs Canada ‘champion of antisemitism,’ tying Trudeau’s condemnation of military action in Gaza to 670% spike in anti-Jewish incidents

Israel on Monday crowned Canada the “champion of antisemitism” and published a report blaming world leaders, universities, media outlets, and social networks for allowing or encouraging skyrocketing anti-Jewish sentiments around the world last year.

Relying on media accounts and data from international hate monitors, the Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism Ministry publication released Monday found that Jewish communities around the world were increasingly threatened due to a rising tide of anti-Israel criticism from friend and foe alike in the wake of Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack and the war in Gaza.

Among those singled out in the 153-page English-language report were the governments of South Africa, Ireland and Spain, which were accused of leading the way in antisemitic rhetoric by voicing opposition to Israeli actions or policies. Political leaders speaking out against Israel were accused of bolstering anti-Jewish sentiments, as were the United Nations, the TikTok social network, and Columbia University.

Several organizations have documented a sharp rise in antisemitic rhetoric and actions after Hamas mounted its shock assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, killing more than 1,200 people and kidnapping 251. The Diaspora Ministry report, in contrast, devoted much of its focus to assigning blame to different entities for allowing hate speech and activity to persist and went further than others in linking anti-Israel sentiment to antisemitism.

“This shocking data highlights the ongoing failure of international institutions and many Western countries,” Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli said in a press release. “The Israeli government will not hesitate to point out those who encourage antisemitism – be it governments, universities, or social networks.”

The report synthesized data from various sources, including watchdog organizations like the Anti-Defamation League and UN Watch, global research institutions, and Jewish umbrella organizations in different countries, the ministry said.

The publication comes just over a month after the ministry was lambasted for embracing far-right European politicians and disparaging left-wing organizations at an international conference on combating antisemitism it organized in Jerusalem.

Israel debates 80% tax on foreign donations to NGOs

Opposition lawmakers criticized the proposed law, saying the state was trying to stifle voices, including the media, that don't agree with Israel's policies.

An Israeli parliamentary committee on Monday began debate on a law that would impose an 80% tax on non-government organizations that receive the majority of their funding from foreign entities in a bid to reduce foreign influence on the state.

Under the proposed law, these NGOs would not be able to petition Israeli courts, including the Supreme Court. Israel's finance minister, though, would be able to grant an exemption from the tax.

Organizations funded by the Israeli state and those with an annual turnover of below 100,000 shekels ($27,668.64) would be exempted.

The debate in the Knesset's Constitution, Law and Justice Committee was at times heated and divided along coalition lines. The panel is preparing the bill for a first reading in the main plenum.

"This law will preserve a Jewish state and a democratic regime, and will block improper foreign interference," said Ariel Kallner, the bill's sponsor, during the debate.

Trump says 'I don't know' when asked if he must uphold the Constitution

'I don't know': Trump says he doesn't know if he needs to uphold the ConstitutionScroll back up to restore default view.

WASHINGTON ‒ President Donald Trump said he does not know whether he's required to uphold the U.S. Constitution as president in an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" as he defended his administration's aggressive actions to remove people who are in the country illegally.

Trump's comments follow the Supreme Court in April saying the Trump administration must "facilitate" the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland sheet metal worker and father of three who was wrongfully deported to an El Salvador prison without receiving a trial.

"I don't know," Trump said when asked by host Kristen Welker whether he needs to uphold the Constitution. "I have to respond by saying, again, I have brilliant lawyers that work for me, and they are going to obviously follow what the Supreme Court said."

The Trump administration has said it doesn't need to request Abrego Garcia's release from El Salvador, where he's originally from, because of how the court worded its decision. Democrats and other critics have argued that such statements show the administration is refusing to obey the nation's highest court.

"What you said is not what I heard the Supreme Court said," Trump told Welker. "They have a different interpretation."

Trump officials have accused Abrego Garcia of being a member of the MS-13 gang and said if he were returned to the United States, he would be deported back to El Salvador because of his illegal status. Abrego Garcia has denied he was a member of MS-13 or any other gang.

"I don't know. It seems – it might say that, but if you're talking about that, then we'd have to have a million or 2 million or 3 million trials," he said. "We have thousands of people that are some murderers and some drug dealers and some of the worst people on Earth."

Trump has pushed the boundaries of presidential power during the first three-plus months of his second term, bypassing Congress to set policy and arguing that the president ‒ not U.S. district judges ‒ have the final say on national security matters.

Former FBI Electronics Technician Sentenced to 20 Years on Child Exploitation Charges

NASHVILLE – A former FBI electronics technician was sentenced last week to 20 years in federal prison having previously been found guilty after a jury trial on one count of sexual exploitation of a minor, one count of coercion and enticement of a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity, two counts of receipt of child pornography, and three counts of transferring obscene material on an individual under the age of sixteen, announced Acting United States Attorney Robert E. McGuire for the Middle District of Tennessee.

According to evidence presented at trial, between June 2020 and April 27, 2021, Justin Carroll, who was employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as an electronics technician, engaged in sexually explicit chats and exchanged sexually explicit images with three fourteen-year-old females over various social media platforms after connecting with the minors on chatting websites. Carroll’s conduct was discovered after one of the victims mailed a Valentine’s Day package to the FBI office. Sexually explicit images of the minor females were found in Carroll’s social media accounts and on his cell phone. Images of Carroll were found in one of the minor’s social media accounts and on another minor’s cell phone. Carroll continued communicating with the fourteen-year-old victim who mailed the package, even after receiving an e-mail from her mother inquiring why her daughter mailed him a package and advising him of her daughter’s age.

“When someone in law enforcement dishonors their responsibilities by committing criminal acts, we will seek the most serious penalties in order to restore the public’s trust,” said Acting United States Attorney Robert E. McGuire. “Justin Carroll dishonored the men and women of the FBI by his deplorable actions and now, thanks to the prosecution team and our law enforcement partners, he faces the consequences of those actions.”

"Today’s sentencing underscores that no matter who you are, you will be brought to justice if you are found guilty of such criminal behavior," said Special Agent in Charge Joseph E. Carrico of the FBI Nashville Field Office. "The FBI will continue to work with our partners to protect children from exploitation and hold accountable those who exploit or endanger them."

“HSI is committed to justice by working with our law enforcement partners to hold anyone accountable for misconduct, reaffirming our dedication to upholding the trust the American people place in us daily,” said Homeland Security Investigations Nashville Special Agent in Charge Rana Saoud. “We will pursue these investigations vigorously as it is paramount that we maintain the trust and integrity of those we swore an oath to protect.”

Following his term of incarceration, Carroll will be on supervised release for 10 years.
