Xi calls for root causes of Ukraine conflict to be eliminated

The Chinese leader has said Beijing hopes for a fair and lasting settlement between Moscow and Kiev

“China advocates and adheres to the common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable global security concept for the Ukrainian crisis,” the ministry said in a statement, citing the Chinese president.

“The reasonable security concerns of all countries should be taken seriously, and the root causes of the crisis should be eliminated.”

Xi expressed hope for a “fair, lasting, binding,” and mutually acceptable settlement between Moscow and Kiev through dialogue. Putin “highly appreciated” Xi’s approach, the ministry noted, and reiterated that Russia remains open to peace talks without preconditions.

According to the ministry, the discussions between Xi and Putin covered a broad range of international and regional issues and focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation. Xi said the world “has entered a new period of turbulence and change,” adding that as long as China and Russia “adhere to strategic cooperation, no force can stop the two countries from achieving their own development and revitalization.”

Two State Capitals Adopt LGBT Flags as Official City Flags in Bid to Circumvent Law

I’m not letting most of you, our infinitely wise readership, at home in on this self-evident fact. Instead, this is more of a public service announcement to the family, friends, and co-workers of those employed or elected by the cities of Boise, Idaho, and Salt Lake City, Utah: Keep sharp objects away from these people for the next few weeks or anytime you hear someone saying something about their visage. Thank me later.

I mention this because, within hours of each other, lawmakers in both state capitals, 330 miles away, passed laws that made the LGBT rainbow “pride” flag and other flags official city flags in order to sidestep state laws that would have barred the display of such flags.

According to KSL-TV in Salt Lake City, “[t]he new flags would add the sego lily logo from Salt Lake City’s city flag to the Juneteenth, Progress Pride and transgender flags” in order to make them official city flags, essentially a move to sidestep a bill that would ban flying most flags that were not the official national, state, city, or school flags.

BoiseDev reported a similar reasoning behind the move “retroactively designating the Pride flag and the Donate Life flag, commemorating April as Donate Life Month, honoring the benefits of organ donation, as official flags of the City of Boise. This puts these two flags alongside the traditional blue City of Boise flag featuring the Idaho State Capitol as official flags of the city’s government.”

“This move comes after weeks of tension over [the mayor’s] decision to continue flying the Progress Pride flag in front of city hall in defiance of HB 96 brought by Rep. Heather Scott, R-Blanchard.

“That bill, passed in the 2025 legislative session, restricted the flags local governments in Idaho can fly to a specific list of flags, including the United States flag, the State of Idaho flag, official city flags, the POW/MIA flag, branches of the U.S. military, Indian tribal flags, flags for colleges, universities or public schools and the flags of other nations for special occasions.”

Florida Passes Bill To Ban, Criminalize Geoengineering

The bill, which makes it a third-degree felony to release any chemical, substance or apparatus into Florida’s atmosphere to affect the weather or climate, has cleared both the House and the Senate and awaits Gov. Ron DeSantis’ signature.

The Florida House of Representatives last week passed a bill to ban and criminalize geoengineering and weather modification, Newsweek reported.

The bill makes it a third-degree felony to release any chemical, substance or apparatus into Florida’s atmosphere to affect the weather or climate.

It imposes a penalty of up to $100,000 for any person or corporation and up to $5,000 and five years in prison for an aircraft controller or pilot involved in such releases.

It also requires Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection to develop protocols to investigate reports of geoengineering and directs the department to send the reports to other state agencies, including the health department, when appropriate.

The bill has cleared both the House and the Senate and awaits Gov. Ron DeSantis’ signature.

“There is a lot of unauthorized activity that is currently not regulated, both at a federal and a state level, and this is where we wanted to start,” Sen. Ileana Garcia, who introduced the bill, told members of the Senate.

GreenMedInfo’s Sayer Ji praised the bill on his Substack. “Florida has drawn a bright line in the sky: It will not allow corporate interests, climate interventionists, or covert operations to tamper with its atmosphere or pollute its environment.”

Since the bill was introduced, the Florida Legislature has received more than 100,000 emails demanding action on geoengineering, Ji reported.

Health Freedom advocacy organizations, including Stand for Health Freedom supported the bill, arguing that such practices “endanger human health and safety and the environment; threaten air, water, soil, and wildlife resources; disrupt agricultural operations; and potentially interfere with aviation, state security, and the economy of the Commonwealth.”

Rep. Kevin Steele introduced the bill in the House. Neither of the bill’s sponsors immediately responded to The Defender’s request for comment.

Democratic Judge In Texas Indicted For Allegedly Running Voter Fraud Scheme

A Democratic judge and five other individuals were indicted over alleged election crimes after running a “vote harvesting scheme,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office announced Wednesday.

Judge Rochelle Lozano Camacho, an elected Democratic judge in Frio County, Texas, was charged with three counts of vote harvesting during her 2022 primary campaign, according to a press release from Paxton’s office. The county’s trustee — the judge’s sister — the election administrator, two Pearsall, Texas city council members, and an additional woman were also indicted.

FEMA Chief Gets Canned After Contradicting Noem On Future Of Agency

Cameron Hamilton, senior official performing the duties of the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, was terminated Wednesday after defending the continuation of FEMA’s existence.

Democratic Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut asked Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem about the future of FEMA in an oversight hearing Tuesday with the House Appropriations Committee. Noem responded that “FEMA as it exists today should be eliminated.”

DeLauro, unsatisfied with Noem’s answer, calling it “confusing and inadequate,” put Hamilton on the spot by asking for a “clear answer.”

“I do not believe it is in the best interest of the American people to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency,” Hamilton responded.

Hamilton followed up by saying FEMA’s future “is a conversation that should be had between the president of the United States and this governing body.”

The next day, Hamilton was fired under the direction of Noem, Reuters reported Thursday.

The dissonance in Noem’s and Hamilton’s statements seems to hinge on the interpretation of what she meant by “as it exists today.”

In the hearing, Hamilton said the reason he was hired was to “refocus this organization in order to better serve the American people under President Trump’s mandate.”

Steve Witkoff Ahead of Round 4 of Talks: Iran Has Agreed ‘They Don’t Want’ Nuclear Weapon

Senior adviser and assistant to the president Steve Witkoff told Breitbart News exclusively that the government of Iran has told him that the Iranians have agreed they do not want a nuclear weapon.

Witkoff, who made the explosive revelation in an exclusive long-form on-camera interview with Breitbart News on Thursday at the White House, is leading negotiations for President Donald Trump with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Witkoff is expected to meet with the Iranians, possibly as soon as this weekend, for a fourth round of talks in Oman, after two previous discussions in Iran and another in Rome. Witkoff will be meeting with them during a broader trip to the Middle East this upcoming week, where President Trump is expected to visit Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. “We’ve stated our position. The Iranians cannot have a bomb. They have stated back that they don’t want one,” Witkoff told Breitbart News. “So we’re going to, for the purposes of this discussion, take them at their word that that’s actually how they feel. If that’s how they feel, then their enrichment facilities have to be dismantled. They cannot have centrifuges. They have to downblend all of their fuel that they have there and send it to a faraway place—and they have to convert to a civil program if they want to run a civil program. Now, they have a civil reactor actually in the state of Iran—it’s called Bushehr. They have no enrichment capability at this place and if we take them at their word why not just turn all the rest of their facilities just like Bushehr? Bushehr they have no ability to enrich, they have no ability to have centrifuges there, they can only use that facility for civilian purposes—making of electricity and things of that sort of civilian purposes—and if that is what they choose to do, if they believe in that program, they ought to expand it if they want to. An enrichment program can never exist in the state of Iran ever again. That’s our red line. No enrichment. That means dismantlement, it means no weaponization, and it means that Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan—those are their three enrichment facilities—have to be dismantled.”

Asked if an eventual deal with the Iranians would look like former President Barack Obama’s failed Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or if it would be a tougher deal, Witkoff said the Iranians are in a “more vulnerable” position than they were a decade ago during JCPOA negotiations and therefore any eventual deal will be much stronger.

JPMorgan CFO dumps 70 percent of holdings, largest sale in years

JPMorgan Chase’s top executives are making moves, and they are big enough to raise eyebrows. CFO Jeremy Barnum just slashed his holdings by 70 percent, selling 40,014 shares and dropping his stake from 58,000 to 18,017 shares. That is a significant reduction, and it does not follow his usual pattern of selling only after receiving stock awards. Over the past few years, Barnum typically sold about half of what he was granted, but this latest sale is a departure from that trend.

Barnum’s sale totaled over 10 million dollars, with shares sold at an average price of 250.77 dollars. While insider transactions do not always signal trouble, a CFO unloading this much stock in one go is worth noting. He could be freeing up capital for personal reasons, but the timing and scale of the sale make it hard to ignore.

Other executives followed suit. Linda Bammann, a board member and chair of the Risk Policy Committee, and Jennifer Piepszak, the company’s COO, both reduced their holdings by about nine percent. Bammann’s sale is particularly striking because it is her largest since 2013. Financial markets are unpredictable, and insiders often have a better sense of future risks than the average investor.

While Kushner is not expected to join the president on this trip, CNN reported that he has been in regular contact with officials preparing for high-stakes meetings with leaders in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.

These discussions have included talks about economic cooperation and the potential expansion of normalization agreements with Israel.

Israel's war with Hamas tests boundaries of the Jewish State's freedom of speech

Even in the middle of war, it is vital that the public voices its opinion and criticizes the government, which goes against the sentiments of some Israeli voters.

The Israel-Hamas War is repeatedly testing the boundaries of freedom of speech and protest in Israel. Attempts to restrict freedom of expression began even before October 7, 2023, as part of the judicial overhaul promoted by the government.

However, the war provides an excellent pretext for the government to act against those who criticize it and its policies, call for an end to the war, or express sympathy for the suffering of the population in Gaza.

Last month’s “letters protest” – a series of public petitions by various groups whose signatories demand an end to the war – constitutes an interesting test case for the boundaries of freedom of speech during wartime.

Trump Cut Off Contact With Netanyahu Over 'Manipulation' Concerns, Israeli Reporter Claims

This is the moment Donald Trump became president (at least if this report is true).

US President Donald Trump has decided to cut off direct contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a report said Thursday.

Yanir Cozin, a correspondent for Israeli Army Radio, said in a post on his X account that Trump made the decision after close associates told Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer that the president believes that Netanyahu is manipulating him.

An Israeli official added that Dermer’s tone during recent discussions with senior Republican figures about what Trump should do was seen as arrogant and unhelpful.

The official said that people around Trump told him that "Netanyahu was manipulating him."

"There is nothing Trump hates more than being portrayed as a fool or someone being played. That’s why he decided to cut contact with Netanyahu," the official added.

Cozin pointed to the Israeli government’s failure to present a concrete plan and timeline regarding Iran and Yemen’s Houthis as a source of the worsening US-Israel relationship.

This might just be a bait and switch to get Iran to take its guard down but with the deal Trump announced with the Houthis (and his praising their "bravery" in withstanding the US's attacks) it's possible we may actually be on the precipice of a sea change.

I shared an article in March about how Israelis said they fear Trump could at any moment do a 180 and drop them like he dropped Ukraine.

I heard similar while watching a panel at the Jewish News Syndicate's International Policy Summit last week.

One panelist, Sarah Stern of the Endowment for Middle East Truth, said that she's "very afraid" that the US-Israel relationship as it stands only has "two years" left.

Stern lamented the rise of the "Tucker Carlson" wing of the Republican Party as "very scary" and said: "I have to say, to be very honest, that I'm very worried. We might have a two-year window to get a lot accomplished in Congress, I'm very afraid that the Democrats might take the House, might take the Senate – we have a lot of work to do."

With the majority of Americans now opposing Israel, the gap between what the American people want and what our Congress is giving us is growing larger by the day and could soon boil over. There was a poll last month suggesting Chuck Schumer could potentially be ousted in the Senate by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The Israelis are afraid because they know the American public have turned against them and the US-Israel "special relationship" is just a house of cards built on bribes and blackmail.

Did Western Intelligence Play a Role in the Latest Terrorist Attack in Kashmir?

While many uninformed Westerners might scoff at the idea, Pakistan’s Defense Minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, accused India of staging a false flag. But Asif didn’t stop there. During an interview with Sky News, Asif admitted that Pakistan has been supporting and funding terrorist groups for about three decades, describing this as “doing the dirty work for the United States and the West, including Britain.” He acknowledged that this was a “mistake” and said Pakistan has suffered greatly as a result, especially by aligning with the West during the Soviet-Afghan war and the post-9/11 US-led war on terror. Training of Mujahideen: Reflecting on Pakistan’s past decisions, Asif acknowledged that the country had trained Mujahideen fighters during the Afghan-Soviet war, stating, “We prepared them and now they have become terrorists.” He emphasized that Pakistan should not have engaged in such activities at the behest of other nations.

Critique of U.S. Military Actions: Asif has criticized the United States for its military interventions, noting that Pakistan has suffered due to its alliance with the U.S. He pointed out that the U.S. left behind high-tech weapons in Afghanistan, which have contributed to the rise in terrorism within Pakistan.

The attack in Pahalgam, at a minimum, was designed to disrupt further development of the area as a tourist destination. Still, in light of Asif’s remarkable confession, I cannot rule out something more nefarious by my former outfit or by Britain’s MI-6.

The conflict between Pakistan and India heated up quickly on Tuesday, with India hitting alleged terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan retaliating with artillery and missile strikes. Following this spike in violence, things appear to have calmed down. Iran’s Foreign Minister Aragchi is in the region, trying to mediate. I suspect that he is doing this with the full backing and support of both Russia and China.

Anderson Couple Sentenced to Combined 75 Years in Federal Prison for Sexually Exploiting Infant

Jamie M. Powell, a/k/a Jamie Cramer, 44, and Richard Smith, 42, both of Anderson, Indiana, have been sentenced for their roles in a conspiracy to sexually exploit a minor.

Powell has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison followed by a lifetime of supervised release after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit the sexual exploitation of a minor as well as actual and attempted sexual exploitation of a minor. Powell must also pay $10,000 in restitution.

Richard Smith has been sentenced to 50 years in federal prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit the sexual exploitation of a minor and possession of child sexual abuse material. Smith must also pay $10,000 in restitution. His federal sentence was ordered to be served consecutively to his state convictions for Dealing in Methamphetamine, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Battery with Bodily Injury to a Public Safety Officer, for which he received concurrent sentences of 16-, 5-, and 4-years imprisonment.

According to court documents, Powell is the mother of five children, including Minor Victim 1, who was between one and two years old at the time of the offense. In early 2020, the Department of Child Services (DCS) filed to terminate Powell’s parental rights. Powell relocated to an apartment in Anderson, with three of her children and her boyfriend, Richard Smith. Powell’s youngest children, Minor Victim 1 and Minor Witness 1 were in DCS Custody.

Between late 2020 and early 2021, Powell and Smith discussed Smith’s sexual interest in Powell’s children and in bestiality over text messages. In those messages, the couple agreed for Powell to molest Minor Victim 1 and produce sexually explicit photos and videos of the child to send to Smith. The messages also contained extremely graphic and crude requests from Smith detailing how he wanted Powell to abuse the minor.

Throughout this time period, Powell was permitted to have supervised visitation with two of her children, including Minor Victim 1. During these court-ordered visitations, Powell waited until supervisors were not looking to record sexually explicit videos and images of the child, attempting to evade suspicion by pretending to change her diaper. In total, over 25 visits, Powell produced 577 images and videos of child sexual abuse of Minor Victim 1 and shared 486 of them with Smith.

Investigators located over 2,400 image files of child sex abuse material and approximately 170 video files of bestiality on Powell’s cell phone. On Smith’s cell phone, investigators found more than 5,000 images and videos of child sex abuse material.

Pharmaceutical Manufacturer Assertio Therapeutics Inc. Agrees to Pay $3.6M to Resolve Allegations that It Violated the False Claims Act in Connection with Marketing its Fentanyl Product

Lazanda, a fentanyl nasal spray, is approved by the FDA solely for break-through cancer pain in patients who are already receiving and who are tolerant to opioid therapy for their underlying persistent cancer pain. The United States alleges that, between 2013 and 2017, Assertio, which was known as Depomed at the time, caused the submission of false claims to the Medicare and TRICARE programs by focusing its marketing on pain specialists who were prescribing high volumes of TIRF products, including those who were flagged for diversion or who were later indicted. The United States further alleges that Assertio placed high-volume TIRF prescribers on its speakers’ bureau and advisory boards and developed its “Signature Support Program” to ensure that Lazanda prescriptions would be approved by insurance companies, including Medicare Part D plans. The United States contends that Assertio’s marketing efforts caused prescribers to write Lazanda prescriptions for Medicare and TRICARE beneficiaries who did not have breakthrough cancer pain, resulting in the submission of false claims to Medicare and TRICARE from thirteen high-volume prescribers.

Acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Andrew Byerly Birge announced that a federal jury convicted Eugene Walter-George Rantanen, (37, L’Anse, Michigan) of murder and first-degree child abuse. Rantanen is scheduled to be sentenced this fall.

On February 19, 2024, a nineteen-month-old toddler became unresponsive while in the sole custody of Rantanen, while the two were inside the L’Anse Reservation of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. After extensive medical intervention, the child succumbed to the injuries and died on February 24, 2024. Based on the medical examiner’s testimony at trial, the toddler had suffered blunt force trauma to the head, which caused significant injuries to the brain. Based on government-witness testimony at trial, the only plausible explanation for the toddler’s injuries was that Rantanen caused the severe brain injuries.

“Any time a child dies, it is a tragedy. But it is particularly tragic when a caretaker causes the death,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Birge. “My office will hold individuals like Rantanen accountable for their violent crimes whenever it can.”

“This conviction confirms that Eugene Rantanen will no longer pose a threat to anyone, especially our children,” said Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Michigan. “This outcome results from a thorough and cooperative investigation with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Police, the Village of L'Anse Police, the Baraga County Sheriff's Office, the Michigan State Police, and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Michigan. I extend my deepest condolences to those who truly loved the young victim—no one should ever have to endure such a heartbreaking loss.”

The FBI, Michigan State Police, Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Police, Baraga County Sheriff’s Office, and Village of L’Anse Police investigated this case, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alexis Sanford and Jeanne Long are prosecuting it.

The newly-elected Pope Leo XIV is facing accusations of 'looking the other way' when confronted with child sex abuse allegations against a priests in his Chicago and South American churches, it has emerged.

Robert Prevost, who became the first North American pontiff on Thursday, was accused by a survivors' group of failing to act upon allegations of abuse in the U.S. and in Peru - concerns they relayed to the cardinals who selected him.

New report finds lockdown inflicted deep harm on Canadians

"A new report released by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms outlines the extensive and lasting damage caused by COVID-19 lockdowns in Canada, citing a dramatic decline in mental health, a rise in non-COVID deaths, strained healthcare services, economic fallout, and increased crime.

The report, Five Years On: Tracing the Costs of Lockdowns, criticizes federal and provincial governments for implementing sweeping restrictions without transparent, evidence-based analysis. It argues that the measures, intended to save lives, resulted in widespread physical, social, and economic harm.

Among the most significant findings is the steep drop in Canadians' mental well-being. In 2019, 67% of Canadians described their mental health as "very good or excellent," but by 2023, that figure had dropped to 54%. Those rating their mental health as "fair or poor" nearly doubled, rising from 8% to 15%, with young adults disproportionately affected.

Non-COVID deaths among Canadians under 45 increased by 22%, with contributing factors including addiction, delayed medical care, suicide, and other diseases.

Youth physical activity declined sharply, while screen time surged. As many as 70% of children and teens reported anxiety, depression, or other serious mental health issues.

India-Pakistan Fighting Suddenly Escalates To Most Expansive In Decades

Friday has seen the border conflict between India and Pakistan escalate once again, with The New York Times describing that it has escalated to the most expansive military clashes in decades. Entire large expanses of border zones are swarming with drones overhead - a first in the history of the long-running rivalry.

"There were reports of nonstop barrages along the border overnight into Friday, as well as reports of attacks by Pakistan into the Indian city of Jammu, a part of Kashmir," the Times report says, citing that drone attacks have been exchanged along India's entire western border.

Pakistan has rejected Indian Army claims that all drone attacks into India have been intercepted. There's been days of a 'fog of war' environment in which it's been impossible for outside media to verify each claim and counter-claim.

NYT further observes:

India’s defense officials said Pakistan’s military had attempted aerial intrusions in 36 locations with "300 to 400" drones to test India’s air defense system. The officials said they had identified the drones as made in Turkey.

And more troop losses have been reported, after Pakistan claimed up to 50 Indian droops had died in the last day of fighting. Indian defense officials said their forces had suffered "some losses and injuries" last night, a Times correspondent says Friday.

According to more, "Artillery in the disputed region of Kashmir has been ferocious, and dozens of civilians have been reported killed on both sides of the boundary."

But despite several historic wars between the nuclear-armed rivals, what makes this week 'new' and unprecedented is the use of drones and loitering munitions, or 'suicide' UAVs.
