City poised to reopen storefronts closed during illegal cannabis shop crackdown
The city temporarily closed roughly 1,400 illegal pot shops since Mayor Eric Adams’ controversial crackdown began last year, the mayor’s office announced Wednesday. And now it’s working with building owners to reopen the storefronts.
City sheriffs placed padlocks on the unlicensed cannabis stores after state lawmakers last year gave New York the authority to shutter the businesses for up to one year. As part of the campaign, known as Operation Padlock to Protect, the sheriff’s office and the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection have confiscated more than $95 million worth of illegal cannabis products from the stores.
