Newly released records show Canada’s top doctor and federal managers signed confidentiality pledges during the COVID crisis to avoid disclosures that could damage government credibility.

 

Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, and nearly 30 senior federal health officials signed a confidential oath during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, pledging not to release information that could “embarrass” the Trudeau cabinet, according to internal records obtained through Access to Information requests.

 

The oath, revealed by Blacklock’s Reporter, was part of a broader secrecy policy within the Public Health Agency and other government departments including Health, Industry, Foreign Affairs, and National Defence. Internal communications from 2020 show that vaccine supply manager Alan Thom voiced concern about the widespread requirement for federal managers to sign non-disclosure agreements, noting, “at a certain point the Department of Public Works determined individual non-disclosure agreements were no longer needed… as we are all covered through our responsibilities as public servants.”

 

The confidentiality agreement emphasized that any “unauthorized disclosure of confidential information… may result in embarrassment, criticism or claims against Canada and may jeopardize Canada’s supplier relations and procurement processes.” Managers acknowledged their ongoing obligations under the Values And Ethics Code For The Public Sector, according to the documents.

 

The oaths were signed shortly after the Trudeau administration secured billions in COVID-19 vaccine contracts with companies including Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Novavax, Johnson & Johnson, Medicago, and Sanofi. Dr. Tam, a longtime proponent of mass vaccination, oversaw public messaging during the rollout.

 

The first mRNA vaccine to be approved in Canada was Pfizer’s BioNTech shot, authorized on December 9, 2020, followed closely by Moderna’s vaccine. The approvals came after the Trudeau government granted vaccine manufacturers legal immunity from liability for adverse effects. Parliamentarians requesting to review those contracts were denied access.

 

In response to growing reports of vaccine-related injuries, Canada launched its Vaccine Injury Support Program (VISP) in late 2020. As reported by LifeSiteNews, the program was created after legal protections were granted to pharmaceutical companies. A memo from Canada’s Department of Health now warns that VISP payouts are set to exceed the program’s original $75 million budget, prompting the federal government to allocate an additional $36 million.

 

Despite dwindling public demand, the government continues to purchase new doses, even as its own statistics show widespread rejection of booster injections by Canadians. Compounding concerns, an inhalable mRNA vaccine—developed using fetal cell lines and funded by Ottawa—has now entered Phase 2 clinical trials.

 

Data from Statistics Canada also indicates that post-vaccine rollout, deaths attributed to COVID-19 and “unspecified causes” significantly increased, raising further questions about the long-term safety and effectiveness of the vaccine campaign.

LONDON, May 14 (Reuters) - U.S. energy officials are reassessing the risk posed by Chinese-made devices that play a critical role in renewable energy infrastructure after unexplained communication equipment was found inside some of them, two people familiar with the matter said.

Power inverters, which are predominantly produced in China, are used throughout the world to connect solar panels and wind turbines to electricity grids. They are also found in batteries, heat pumps and electric vehicle chargers.

While inverters are built to allow remote access for updates and maintenance, the utility companies that use them typically install firewalls to prevent direct communication back to China.

However, rogue communication devices not listed in product documents have been found in some Chinese solar power inverters by U.S experts who strip down equipment hooked up to grids to check for security issues, the two people said.

Over the past nine months, undocumented communication devices, including cellular radios, have also been found in some batteries from multiple Chinese suppliers, one of them said.

Reuters was unable to determine how many solar power inverters and batteries they have looked at.

The rogue components provide additional, undocumented communication channels that could allow firewalls to be circumvented remotely, with potentially catastrophic consequences, the two people said.

Both declined to be named because they did not have permission to speak to the media.

"We know that China believes there is value in placing at least some elements of our core infrastructure at risk of destruction or disruption," said Mike Rogers, a former director of the U.S. National Security Agency. "I think that the Chinese are, in part, hoping that the widespread use of inverters limits the options that the West has to deal with the security issue."

A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington said: "We oppose the generalisation of the concept of national security, distorting and smearing China's infrastructure achievements."

Using the rogue communication devices to skirt firewalls and switch off inverters remotely, or change their settings, could destabilise power grids, damage energy infrastructure, and trigger widespread blackouts, experts said.

"That effectively means there is a built-in way to physically destroy the grid," one of the people said,

The two people declined to name the Chinese manufacturers of the inverters and batteries with extra communication devices, nor say how many they had found in total.

The existence of the rogue devices has not previously been reported. The U.S. government has not publicly acknowledged the discoveries.

Asked for comment, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) said it continually assesses risk associated with emerging technologies and that there were significant challenges with manufacturers disclosing and documenting functionalities.

"While this functionality may not have malicious intent, it is critical for those procuring to have a full understanding of the capabilities of the products received," a spokesperson said.

Work is ongoing to address any gaps in disclosures through "Software Bill of Materials" - or inventories of all the components that make up a software application - and other contractual requirements, the spokesperson said.

Using the one hand alone can seem too informal, but if doing so, use the right.

Tipping is common in Saudi Arabia, but it is not routine. It is also not required if a service charge is already included in the bill. Saudis usually tip expatriate service people and individual services in hotels despite the overall service charge. For example, it is appropriate to leave -2USD for a porter or housekeeper.

Punctuality depends on the priority of the occasion. Saudi Arabians generally have a more relaxed approach to time-keeping in casual settings. People do not adhere to tight schedules and are quite tolerant of lateness when meeting with friends. However, punctuality is expected and adhered to in professional settings (see Business Culture).

It is considered rude to check the time whilst in conversation with someone or at a social gathering. Time spent with friends is considered time well spent.

Ask permission before taking anyone’s photo or posting it online, especially if they are a woman.

Avoid sitting in any position that allows one’s shoe to face another person. This is considered insulting. Similarly, it is inappropriate to cross your legs when facing someone.

Try to avoid situations in which you will be left alone with a member of the opposite gender (e.g. elevators, cars). If a woman is in a car alone with a male driver, she may sit in the backseat behind the driver’s seat out of his view.

Avoid wearing tight clothes that accentuate the shape of your body or legs. Most Saudis are accustomed to seeing Western clothing. However, it is advisable to ensure your legs, arms and shoulders are covered. Women are recommended to wear a hair/head scarf covering if visiting Saudi Arabia.

Pay respect to elderly in all situations. For example, standing up when they enter a room or offering them your seat.

It is polite to avoid blowing one’s nose or spitting in public.

Casual whistling has suggestive connotations and may be seen as inappropriate depending on the context.

Loud aggression and/or drunkenness is looked upon very poorly.

Offering and Complimenting Items

There is a strong belief in the evil eye in Saudi Arabia whereby one’s misfortune is caused by another’s envy, sometimes taking the form of a curse. Complimenting or praising something too heavily can cause some Saudis to be wary that the evil eye will be jealous of it or curse it. People say “Mashallah” (May God bless) to ward off the evil eye after a compliment and avoid hurting people’s feelings. This phrase comforts people as it lets them know that you are giving an innocent compliment and do not wish harm. Expect to hear it highly frequently in conversation, and say it after every compliment.

In Saudi Arabia, people generally extend an offer multiple times. It is often polite to decline gestures initially and accept once the person has insisted. This exchange allows the offering person to show their sincerity in the gesture, and shows the receiver’s humbleness.

Be sure to offer everything multiple times in return. If you only offer something once, a Saudi person may respond, “No, it’s okay”, out of modesty and politeness even though they meant to accept on the second offer.

Be careful when you compliment an item in a Saudi person’s house, as they may feel compelled to offer it to you as a gift. If they try to give it to you, insist that you appreciate their gesture but do not want to take it. A Saudi person is likely to offer the object out of politeness, and if you accept, they may end up giving you something they wished to keep.

It is thought to be more sincere if compliments are given out of sight or earshot of the person who owns the possession or thing you are praising.

Show gratitude and humility when offered a compliment. This is done by responding with an equally respectful compliment on the same subject. If they are Muslim, you may wish them Allah’s (God’s) blessings.

Hospitality is highly valued in Saudi Arabian culture. One will generally find that Saudis go to great lengths to ensure their guests feel welcome. See the section on Tribal Identity in Core Concepts for an explanation of traditional Bedouin hospitality.

 

Saudi Arabians have a tendency to display their wealth and materialism in their personal dress, items, homes and hospitality. It is common for people to overdress for events. If a host is not overly generous, guests might be offended or think that the person is ‘cheap’.

Saudi Arabians can offer invitations to their homes multiple times and quite early on in a friendship. It is a sign of goodwill to accept.

It is inappropriate to invite someone of the opposite gender for a private visit to one’s home without an accompaniment.

Unaccompanied men should avoid visiting another Saudi man’s home without giving the family prior notice in case they accidentally intrude on the women of the house.

If a Saudi Arabian wishes for an entire family to visit their home, the male head of the family will generally extend the invitation to the other family’s eldest male.

Remove your shoes when you enter a Saudi Arabian home (especially on carpeted floors), unless instructed otherwise.

The genders are generally segregated during visits. In Saudi Arabia, many households have two different ‘majlis’ (living room/place of sitting/private place for discussion) so men and women can socialise separately.

Once segregated from the men, the women of both families can unveil in front of one another.

Men give women notice before entering an area of the house where unrelated women are socialising to give them time to cover up. For example, if a sister has her female friends visiting, her brother will announce “Ya allah!” before he walks in the room.

Male guests are usually served by the youngest son or a male domestic worker, while female guests are served by the youngest daughter or a female maid.

It is customary to be offered Arabic coffee and dates upon arrival. Coffee is often served in a ‘finjan’ (small cup).

It is good to accept any drink offered as a mark of friendship. Refusing a refreshment could create a misunderstanding around the friendship even if you are simply not thirsty.

Coffee is followed by a sweet of some kind, usually a mint and/or ginger tea.

Hosts will continue to refill guest’s cups until the guest indicates they’ve had enough by covering the mouth of the cup with their hand or gently shaking the cup from side to side and saying “Bas” (Enough).

It is improper/unclean for people to drink out of the same cup.

Hosts may light ‘Oud’ or agawood (a form of incense or oil) during a guest’s visit.

In Saudi Arabia, the consumption of alcohol (and any products containing alcohol) is prohibited for Muslims under Islamic law. It is advisable to abstain from drinking alcohol altogether if you are hosted by Saudi Arabians to avoid potential embarrassment or offence.

Pork is also prohibited in Islam. Do not serve food containing pork or pork byproducts (e.g. gelatine) to your Saudi counterpart.

It is polite to avoid eating, drinking or smoking in front of a Muslim during the daylight hours of the fasting month of Ramadan. In Saudi Arabia, it is considered disrespectful to engage in these activities in public.

Saudis often prepare more food than what their guests will be able to feasibly eat. Hosts often encourage guests to have second helpings and eat more even if they are full.

Try to taste all dishes on offer. Not eating very much can be perceived as rude or a sign that the food tastes bad.

It is important to wash your hands thoroughly before and after eating.

Food can either be served on a large plate set on the floor or on a table.

If the meal is on the floor, it is set on a thin plastic sheet (1m x 1m) to protect the carpet from the food. People sit cross-legged or kneel on one knee around the sheet. Keep your feet away from the cloth or plastic sheet.

When seated at a table, the most honoured seating position is in the middle of the table. Guests usually sit next to the head of the family. Do not take your seat until the eldest/most senior person has sat down.

Older restaurants may have two sections, one for men and one for families (where women and families are seated in a separate, partitioned arrangement). Newer restaurants usually have a mixed-gender open plan, that still provide the option for families to be segregated. A sign out front will indicate whether a restaurant is segregated. If there is no sign, it is usually mixed.

People only start eating once the host has said that it is time to begin. This is generally indicated when everyone says “Sahtain” (Good health) or “Bismallah” (in the name of God).

It is impolite to begin eating or drinking before the eldest/most senior person has started.

Saudi food generally does not require utensils to eat. People use their right hand, scooping with the fingers.

Use the right hand to serve and pass any food or dish, in accordance with Islamic custom. The left hand is considered unclean and shouldn’t make direct contact with food.

When eating rice, it is normal to form the rice into a small ball before placing it in the mouth. If seated on the floor, rice may drop onto the plastic sheet whilst moving it from the dish to your mouth. This is normal and socially acceptable.

Meat is stripped from the bone with the right hand. It is polite to offer other people separate bits of stripped meat.

Flat bread is a staple in almost all meals.

When the meal is finished, guests can say “Daimah”, meaning ‘may there always be plenty of food on your table’.

The main meal may be followed by more tea or coffee and some sweets.

Be aware that the time for networking and socialisation comes before the meal is eaten. Once the food has been eaten, guests generally leave very quickly after. Some Saudi men often leave very quickly after the meal is finished.

Thank the host directly before getting up from the table.

Gift Giving

Gift giving is a personal and very common practice throughout Saudi Arabia. However, personal gifts are usually only given by close friends.

It is polite to bring a small gift as a gesture of thanks if invited to a Saudi’s family home (e.g. food items). This should be given as a gesture to the whole family rather than a specific member. It is considered especially inappropriate for men to give individual women gifts, especially those with romantic connotations (e.g. flowers).

Avoid giving extravagant or expensive gifts. This can embarrass the recipient, especially if it is given in front of others.

When offering a gift, it is likely that the gift will not be opened in front of the giver.

Give and pass gifts using the right hand unless the object is too heavy and both hands are required.

Saudis may thoroughly examine a gift upon receiving it, remarking on it in admiration to show their appreciation and respect for the giver’s selection.

Do not give alcohol, pork, knives, pigskin, perfumes with alcohol or anything that contains a sexualised image of women.

Perfume, watches and ‘Oud’ (a form of incense or oil used by Saudis daily) are common and good personal gifts for men. Men should not buy perfume or Oud for a woman unless they are a very close relative. Women may buy Oud for each other.

Avoid buying gold or silk clothing items for male Saudis. Wearing these materials goes against Islamic custom. Silver is the most appropriate colour/material to buy for men.

Saudis almost always bring gifts for friends and family when they travel, even if they only leave for the weekend. People bring back misak and zamzam water from Mecca, so people know the person has been to Mecca.

US Treasury Shocks With Second Biggest Budget Surplus In History

 

Two weeks ago, as part of its quarterly refunding announcement, the Treasury surprised the market when it unveiled a funding need for the current quarter that was $53 billion lower than it had initially forecast in February, and which we said "indicates that DOGE is indeed working and the US funding needs are actually declining."

 

Needless to say, for a market that was habituated to Joe Biden's debt-funded drunken sailor spending ways, the news that the US would needs less - not more - spending than previously expected, came as a shock, and yields slumped as less debt than expected would be required to fund the world's most indebted government.

 

Today we got the reason why the borrowing need of the US was surprisingly lower than previously expected, and it was revealed in the latest Treasury Monthly Statement laying out the US government's monthly deficit… or rather surplus. Yes, we are so used to describing the sum-total of the US government's monthly income statement as a deficit (i.e., more spending than revenue) that it has become automatic to assume that every month the US will spend more than it brings in. Only this time that wasn't the case.

 

Presenting Exhibit A: in April, the US Treasury generated a $258.4 billion surplus after last month's $160.5 billion deficit; this the second biggest surplus on record, with just the $308 billion bumper surplus in 2021 bigger.

 

To be sure, while US surpluses are few and far between, the one time of the year when they can (occasionally) be seen, is in April, when a surge in tax income offsets the now chronic government bloat and spending. This April was just that, and while the US did spend a hefty $592 billion in April (slightly more than the $528 billion in March, and more than the $567 billion spent a year ago) of which very ominously more than $100 billion was gross interest on the record US debt (which at this moment is about $37 trillion) for the second month in a row…

 

The unexpected surge in revenue, and the resulting budget surplus means that the cumulative deficit for fiscal 2025 suddenly doesn't look catastrophic: recall that just four months ago, back in January, in the last month of Biden's reign, the US had already spent a record $840 billion for the first 4 months of the year, on pace to blow away all previous records. But then something changed, and first March saw a big slowdown in spending which resulted in a much more tame cumulative deficit through March, and then the April data meant that the cumulative deficit in the first seven months of the year, was actually an improvement, and dropped to just $1049 billion, down from a peak of $1037 billion in March, and below the run-rate of both 2021 and 2024.

Tze'ela Gez, a resident of the Bruchin settlement, was murdered Wednesday night in a shooting attack in the West Bank.

She was in her ninth month of pregnancy and was on her way to the delivery room at the hospital. Her baby was born and underwent resuscitation efforts. He is now in Schneider Children's Hospital in serious condition.

The terrorist opened fire Wednesday night on Highway 466 between Bruchin and Peduel, hitting a car in which a man and woman were on their way to the delivery room, emergency services said. Inside was an unconscious woman with severe gunshot wounds, and next to her a fully conscious man trying to stop her bleeding. We provided medical treatment on the spot and quickly transferred the woman to an intensive care unit while performing resuscitation – her condition was critical. The man was evacuated in another ambulance in severe condition."

Wisconsin Judge Dugan Files Motion to Dismiss Citing Immunity

Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan filed a motion to dismiss the federal charges against her Wednesday saying she is immune from prosecution and cited federal overreach by prosecutors.

 

On Tuesday, a federal grand jury indicted Dugan for allegedly helping an illegal immigrant escape U.S. authorities. Dugan is accused of aiding Eduardo Flores-Ruiz by leading him to a separate exit in the courtroom that was away from immigration officers. In April, Dugan was arrested and charged with obstructing a federal agency and concealing a person wanted for arrest. Flores-Ruiz had been charged with multiple violent crimes including strangulation and suffocation, battery, and domestic abuse.

 

Dugan's motion cites the recent Supreme Court decision Trump v. United States saying she is immune from prosecution because she was operating in her official duties as a judge. Dugan's attorneys said the charges should be dismissed because "this is no ordinary criminal case" and Dugan is "no ordinary criminal defendant."

 

"Judges are entitled to absolute immunity for their judicial acts, without regard to the motive with which those acts are allegedly performed," the motion said. "The government's prosecution here reaches directly into a state courthouse, disrupting active proceedings, and interferes with the official duties of an elected judge."

 

"Since at least the early 17th century in England, and carried on through common law in the United States, judges of record have been entitled to absolute immunity for official acts with a few exceptions not applicable here," the motion continued, adding that the Trump administration's prosecution of Dugan has been "virtually unprecedented and entirely unconstitutional."

 

Attorney General Pam Bondi said the case is an example that no one is above the law: "It doesn't matter what line of work you are in, if you break the law, we will follow the facts and we will prosecute you."

 

In response, over 150 former state and federal judges signed a letter to Bondi calling the arrest of Dugan a "cynical" attempt to intimidate judges. "This cynical effort undermines the rule of law," that letter said, "and destroys the trust the American people have in the nation's judges to administer justice in the courtrooms and in the halls of justice across the land."

The United States is examining the possible development of a twin-engined warplane to be known as the F-55, as well as an upgrade to its Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor called the F-22 Super, President Donald Trump said Thursday.

 

Trump was speaking at a meeting of business leaders including the heads of Boeing and GE Aerospace in Doha, a day after announcing a string of business deals including an order from Qatar for 160 Boeing commercial jets.

 

Trump referred to the proposed F-55 as both an upgrade to the Lockheed Martin F-35 and a separate new development.

 

He also highlighted the role of a new air dominance platform called the F-47, recently awarded to Boeing, and said the United States was simultaneously looking at upgrading the stealth fighter it is designed to replace, the F-22.

 

"We're going to do an F-55 and – I think, if we get the right price, we have to get the right price – that'll be two engines and a super upgrade on the F-35, and then we're going to do the F-22," Trump said.

 

"I think the most beautiful fighter jet in the world is the F-22 but we're going to do an F-22 Super and it'll be a very modern version of the F-22 fighter jet."

 

Trump's comments came weeks after he awarded Boeing the contract for the F-47 – a replacement for the F-22 stealth fighter featuring a crewed aircraft flanked by drones and seen as America's most advanced or sixth-generation fighter.

 

Analysts said it was not immediately clear how Trump's list fitted into a jigsaw of known programs or spending plans.

 

Agency Partners aerospace analyst Nick Cunningham said the F-55 may refer to the F/A-XX program, intended to replace the U.S. Navy's Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet fleet during the 2030s.

 

The Navy and Congress are battling with the administration to keep the plans moving forward, Reuters reported Wednesday.

 

Any significant upgrade to the out-of-production F-22 would be costly, while Trump's reference to two engines implies the F-55 would not be closely related to the single-engined F-35, he said.

 

Lockheed Martin is in the midst of a delayed software upgrade for the F-35 to boost displays and processing power.

 

CEO James Taiclet also told analysts last month that Lockheed was looking at ways of applying co-funded technology that was developed for its losing bid for the F-47 contract to the F-35, delivering 80% of the capability for half the cost.

A suspension of habeas corpus due to the crackdown on illegal immigrants living in the United States would meet the conditions set out in the Constitution, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Wednesday, The Hill reported.

 

The issue has been controversial since President Donald Trump's deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller said the White House was considering the suspension of habeas corpus as part of the administration's efforts to deport illegal immigrants.

 

A writ of habeas corpus makes it mandatory for authorities to produce an individual they are holding and to justify their confinement, with the Constitution only permitting its suspension in limited circumstances — "in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it."

 

Noem, when asked by Arizona Republican Rep. Eli Crane about whether a suspension would meet those conditions during an appearance before congressmen, answered that "I'm not a constitutional lawyer, but I believe it does."

 

Crane had said the Biden administration "allowed an invasion into our country."

 

Noem said it was "not in my purview" to consider such a weighty legal decision but said Trump had not made a decision on the matter.

 

"This is the president's prerogative to pursue, and he has not indicated to me that he will or will not be taking that action," the Homeland Security secretary said.

 

Habeas corpus has been a major tool migrants have used to challenge pending deportations by the Trump administration under the Alien Enemies Act, according to The Hill.

 

Steve Vladeck, a national security law expert at Georgetown University, has stated that the requirement that suspension of habeas corpus would advance public safety is key.

 

"The whole point is that the default is for judicial review except when there is a specific national security emergency in which judicial review could itself exacerbate the emergency. The emergency itself isn't enough," he wrote.

President Donald Trump said Thursday a deal was close on Iran's nuclear programme that would avoid military action, sending oil prices tumbling as he boasted of raising "trillions of dollars" on a Gulf tour.

 

"We're not going to be making any nuclear dust in Iran," Trump said in Qatar, the second stop of his multi-day Gulf tour.

 

"I think we're getting close to maybe doing a deal without having to do this," he said, in reference to military action.

 

Oil prices plunged more than three percent on rising hopes for a nuclear deal.

 

Iran has held four rounds of talks with the Trump administration, which has sought to avoid a threatened military strike by Israel on Tehran's contested nuclear programme.

 

"You probably read today the story about Iran. It's sort of agreed to the terms," Trump said.

 

The president did not specify which remarks he was referring to, but an adviser to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Ali Shamkhani, told ABC News that Tehran would give up stockpiles of highly enriched uranium as part of a deal in which Washington lifts sanctions.

 

Trump said that Iran should "say a big thank you" to Qatar's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who had pressed the U..S leader to avoid military action against his country's giant neighbour.

 

Qatar has also been a key mediator in talks to end the 19-month Gaza war and release hostages held by the Palestinian militants Hamas.

 

Trump again said without elaborating that the United States wanted to "take" Gaza, which has been obliterated by the war started by the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.

 

Gaza will become a "freedom zone", Trump said, without elaborating.

 

He has also vowed to "go back on the offensive" should Yemen's Huthi rebels launch attacks, despite a ceasefire agreement with Washington this month.

 

Trump, who began his first major foreign tour in Saudi Arabia and later Thursday heads to the United Arab Emirates, has been unabashed about seeking Gulf money and hailed the effect on creating jobs at home.

 

"This is a record tour. There's never been a tour that will raise – it could be a total of $3.5-4 trillion just in these four or five days," Trump said in Qatar.

 

In Doha, the president hailed what he said was a record $200 billion deal for Boeing aircraft.

 

Saudi Arabia promised its own $600 billion in investment, including one of the largest-ever purchases of U.S. weapons.

 

The final stop of his tour is the UAE, which is seeking to become a leader in technology and especially artificial intelligence to help diversify its oil-reliant economy.

 

But these ambitions hinge on access to advanced U.S. technologies, including AI chips under restricted export – which the UAE president's brother and spy chief Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed reportedly lobbied for during a Washington visit in March.

 

The Gulf leaders' largesse has also stirred controversy, with Qatar offering Trump a luxury aeroplane ahead of his visit for presidential and then personal use, in what Trump's Democratic rivals charged was blatant corruption.

Trump signed an executive order in February ordering the creation of a sovereign wealth fund within the next year. He has previously said revenue earned from tariffs on U.S. imports could form the basis for a wealth fund.

 

The U.S. debt currently stands at $36.2 trillion, according to the Treasury Department, above the $36.1 trillion limit set by Congress in January.

President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Qatar will invest $10 billion in coming years in the Al Udeid Air Base southwest of the country's capital Doha, the largest U.S. military facility in the Middle East.

 

In a speech to U.S. troops at the base during his tour of the Gulf, Trump also said Qatari defense purchases signed on Wednesday are worth $42 billion.

 

Trump will later head to the United Arab Emirates, where leaders are seeking U.S. help to make the wealthy Gulf nation a global leader in artificial intelligence.

 

The U.S. has a preliminary agreement with the UAE to allow it to import 500,000 of Nvidia's most advanced AI chips a year, starting this year, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

 

The deal would boost the UAE's construction of data centers vital to developing artificial intelligence models. But the agreement has provoked national security concerns among sectors of the U.S. government, and the terms could change, sources said.

 

A string of business agreements has been inked during Trump's four-day swing through the Gulf region, including a deal for Qatar Airways to purchase up to 210 Boeing widebody jets, a $600 billion commitment from Saudi Arabia to invest in the U.S., and $142 billion in U.S. arms sales to the kingdom.

 

The trip has also brought a flurry of diplomacy. Trump made a surprise announcement on Tuesday that the U.S. will remove longstanding sanctions on Syria and subsequently met with Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

 

He urged Sharaa to establish ties with Syria's longtime foe Israel.

 

In Abu Dhabi Trump will meet UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other leaders.

 

AI is likely to be a focus of the final leg of Trump's trip.

 

Former President Joe Biden's administration had imposed strict oversight of exports of U.S. AI chips to the Middle East and other regions. Among the Biden administration's fears were that the prized semiconductors would be diverted to China and buttress Beijing's military strength.

 

Trump has made improving ties with some Gulf countries a key goal of his administration. If all the proposed chip deals in Gulf states, and the UAE in particular, come together, the region would become a third power center in global AI competition after the United States and China.

 

Trump had dangled the possibility of making a side trip to Turkey to join Russia-Ukraine talks before returning to Washington, but a U.S. official said on Wednesday that the president would not make that stop.

EXCLUSIVE: Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has fired the top officials leading the National Intelligence Council – whom whistleblowers describe as "radically opposed to Trump"— and has moved the agency to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, or ODNI, to ensure she can block any "politicization of intelligence," Fox News Digital has learned.

 

Gabbard fired Mike Collins, who was serving as the acting chair of the National Intelligence Council, and his deputy, Maria Langan-Riekhof,Tuesday, senior intelligence officials told Fox News Digital.

As forLangan-Reikhof, officials said she has been a "key advocate" for diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives,and is someone who whistleblowers allege is "radically opposed to Trump."

So far, Gabbard has referred three intelligence community professionals to the Department of Justice for criminal prosecution over alleged leaks of classified information. Fox News Digital first reported on those criminal referrals in April.

 

An ODNI official at that time told Fox News Digital that the intelligence community professionals allegedly leaked classified information to the Washington Post and The New York Times.

 

Politicization of our intelligence and leaking classified information puts our nation’s security at risk and must end," Gabbard told Fox News Digital in April. "Those who leak classified information will be found and held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."

 

A senior intelligence official told Fox News Digital Tuesday that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence is investigating 12 other intelligence officials over alleged leaks of classified information.

 

For example, officials told Fox News Digital that ODNI fired two bureaucrats in early May who they say leaked information from an assessment about the violent Tren de Aragua gang to the Times. Officials said those bureaucrats were "CIA detailees" who were fired for "not following proper procedures."

 

In April, Gabbard established a task force to restore transparency and accountability in the intelligence community. Fox News Digital first reported on the Director’s Initiative Group (DIG), which started by investigating weaponization within the intelligence community.

 

Officials said the group will also work to root out politicization and expose unauthorized disclosures of classified intelligence. In addition, it will work to declassify information "that serves a public interest."

The U.S. military base in Qatar is paid for by Qatar (70 to 80%). The only thing we pay for is the military troop payroll.

What’s the citizenship status of the children of illegal aliens? That question has spurred quite a debate over the 14th Amendment lately, with the news that several states—including Pennsylvania, Arizona, Oklahoma, Georgia, and South Carolina—may launch efforts to deny automatic citizenship to such children.

 

Critics claim that anyone born in the United States is automatically a U.S. citizen, even if their parents are here illegally. But that ignores the text and legislative history of the 14th Amendment, which was ratified in 1868 to extend citizenship to freed slaves and their children.

 

The 14th Amendment doesn’t say that all persons born in the U.S. are citizens. It says that “[a]ll persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof” are citizens. That second, critical, conditional phrase is conveniently ignored or misinterpreted by advocates of “birthright” citizenship.

 

Critics erroneously believe that anyone present in the United States has “subjected” himself “to the jurisdiction” of the United States, which would extend citizenship to the children of tourists, diplomats, and illegal aliens alike.

 

But that is not what that qualifying phrase means. Its original meaning refers to the political allegiance of an individual and the jurisdiction that a foreign government has over that individual.

 

The fact that a tourist or illegal alien is subject to our laws and our courts if they violate our laws does not place them within the political “jurisdiction” of the United States as that phrase was defined by the framers of the 14th Amendment.

 

This amendment’s language was derived from the 1866 Civil Rights Act, which provided that “[a]ll persons born in the United States, and not subject to any foreign power” would be considered citizens.

 

Sen. Lyman Trumbull, a key figure in the adoption of the 14th Amendment, said that “subject to the jurisdiction” of the U.S. included not owing allegiance to any other country.

 

As John Eastman, former dean of the Chapman School of Law, has said, many do not seem to understand “the distinction between partial, territorial jurisdiction, which subjects all who are present within the territory of a sovereign to the jurisdiction of that sovereign’s laws, and complete political jurisdiction, which requires allegiance to the sovereign as well.”

In the famous Slaughter-House cases of 1872, the Supreme Court stated that this qualifying phrase was intended to exclude “children of ministers, consuls, and citizens or subjects of foreign States born within the United States.” This was confirmed in 1884 in another case, Elk vs. Wilkins, when citizenship was denied to an American Indian because he “owed immediate allegiance to” his tribe and not the United States.

 

American Indians and their children did not become citizens until Congress passed the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924. There would have been no need to pass such legislation if the 14th Amendment extended citizenship to every person born in America, no matter what the circumstances of their birth, and no matter who their parents are.

 

Even in U.S. v. Wong Kim Ark, the 1898 case most often cited by “birthright” supporters due to its overbroad language, the court only held that a child born of lawful, permanent residents was a U.S. citizen. That is a far cry from saying that a child born of individuals who are here illegally must be considered a U.S. citizen.

 

Of course, the judges in that case were strongly influenced by the fact that there were discriminatory laws in place at that time that restricted Chinese immigration, a situation that does not exist today.

 

The court’s interpretation of the 14th Amendment as extending to the children of legal, noncitizens was incorrect, according to the text and legislative history of the amendment. But even under that holding, citizenship was not extended to the children of illegal aliens—only permanent, legal residents.

 

It is just plain wrong to claim that the children born of parents temporarily in the country as students or tourists are automatically U.S. citizens: They do not meet the 14th Amendment’s jurisdictional allegiance obligations. They are, in fact, subject to the political jurisdiction (and allegiance) of the country of their parents. The same applies to the children of illegal aliens because children born in the United States to foreign citizens are citizens of their parents’ home country.

 

Federal law offers them no help either. U.S. immigration law (8 U.S.C. § 1401) simply repeats the language of the 14th Amendment, including the phrase “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.”

 

The State Department has erroneously interpreted that statute to provide passports to anyone born in the United States, regardless of whether their parents are here illegally and regardless of whether the applicant meets the requirement of being “subject to the jurisdiction” of the U.S. Accordingly, birthright citizenship has been implemented by executive fiat, not because it is required by federal law or the Constitution.

 

We are only one of a very small number of countries that provides birthright citizenship, and we do so based not upon the requirements of federal law or the Constitution, but based upon an erroneous executive interpretation. Congress should clarify the law according to the original meaning of the 14th Amendment and reverse this practice.

Samantha Power is one of stalwarts of the Washington political establishment. She has degrees from Yale and Harvard. She has worked as a journalist. She won a Pulitzer Prize in 2003 for her book A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide. She was a key member of Barack Obama’s election team and went on to sit on the National Security Council and in 2013 became the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. She would be on the shortlist as a future Secretary of State in a Democratic administration.

 

Not bad for a girl from Dublin.

 

Power was born there in 1970 and at age nine immigrated to the United States. The Irish always have some skeletons in their closets. Sometimes the bones bring good news. The ambassador was shocked at what tales her skeletons had to tell.

Recently, on RTE’s Who Do You Think You Are? Power learned that she had a unique connection to revolutionary Michael Collins through her maternal great-grandfather, John Duffy. She learned on the TV show that her great-grandfather, a Royal Irish Constabulary [RIC] man in Athlone, County Westmeath, was secretly active in the Republican movement from early 1917, took orders from Collins, and even helped save him once from a British assassination attempt.

 

What Power didn’t know was contained in Duffy’s Witness Statement at the Bureau of Military History [read it here]. The statement only runs 26 pages long, but it has several interesting interactions between the young Collins and Duffy.

Last year, a Canadian firm, TechInsights, revealed that China’s leading chip maker, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation, had developed a seven-nanometer chip. Arrests made in ‘prolonged, severe’ torture of 6 children in Victorville

 

Three people in San Bernardino County have been arrested in connection with the alleged ongoing torture of six foster children between the ages of 5 to 16, authorities announced Tuesday evening.

 

In a news release, officials with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Crimes Against Children Details launched an investigation into “severe and prolonged abuse and neglect” at a home in the 13000 block of Helena Drive in Victorville.

 

Authorities said that during the investigation, 60-year-old Kenneth Key, 60-year-old Tina Key and 23-year-old Katlynn Key were identified as suspects.

 

Neighbors on the street, who did not want to be identified, told KTLA that they rarely saw the six children, except occasionally when they got into the family car.

 

“Other than that, these kids never came outside like normal kids. They were only allowed to go to the backyard,” one woman added.

 

Officials said at the conclusion of their investigation, all three suspects were arrested and booked at the Central Detention Center for torture. Bail was set at $1 million apiece, authorities added.

 

Details of the ongoing abuse and neglect of the children were not released.
