The daughter of a cryptocurrency CEO and her 2-year-old child were attacked by a group of knife-wielding kidnappers in the center of Paris on Tuesday, harrowing video shows.

The scene unfolded on the the same morning Kim Kardashian arrived at a Paris court to testify in the jewelry heist trial wearing a $3 million diamond necklace — less than two miles away.

Footage of the attack shows the moment the masked men violently try to force the woman, 34, into their van with her two-year-old daughter as she screams for help.

The men try to force the woman into a Chronopost delivery van before they’re scared off by a heroic passerby who chases them with a fire extinguisher, hurling it at them as the suspects run away.

Polish Presidential Candidate Sets EU Flag Alight; Says “Down With Eurocommunism”

Eurocrats were thrown into an uproar last week after Polish presidential candidate and European Parliament member Grzegorz Braun—known for his provocative theatrical stunts—set fire to the European Union flag, condemning what he called the EU’s ‘ideological occupation’ of Poland by a globalist elite.

Hungary is standing its ground as the European Union’s globalist ‘leaders’ push forward with plans to fast-track Ukraine’s membership.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, perhaps President Trump’s closest allies in Europe, and key figures in the Hungarian government have issued their clearest and most urgent warning yet: admitting a war-torn Ukraine into the EU isn’t just reckless—it’s a one-way ticket to economic ruin, societal upheaval, and potentially full-blown war on European soil.

Hungary’s position isn’t new, but the stakes have never been higher. Prime Minister Orbán told public radio last Friday that Ukraine’s accession would amount to “economic suicide” for Europe. Speaking bluntly, he said the EU’s liberal leadership—led by corrupt, unelected Brussels bureaucrats like Ursula von der Leyen—is hurtling toward a catastrophe without consulting the people of Europe.

“As a neighboring country, we believe that if Ukraine is admitted to the European Union, it will mean war,” Orbán declared earlier this week at a conference of EU parliamentary speakers in Budapest. He reminded attendees that the EU has never accepted a country at war—and for good reason.

China adds to classified TJS, Yaogan satellite series with two launches

HELSINKI — China has added new spacecraft to two separate classified satellite series with a pair of launches across Sunday and Monday.

A Long March 3C rocket lifted off from Xichang Satellite Launch Center at 2:09 p.m. Eastern (1809 UTC), May 12, climbing into the night sky above the spaceport.

The Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST), a major arm of state-owned main space contractor CASC, announced launch success within an hour of liftoff.

The launch successfully sent the communication technology experiment satellite-19, or Tongxin Jishu Shiyan-19 (TJS-19), into geosynchronous transfer orbit.

Airspace closure notices indicated the launch was imminent, but the identity of the payload was only revealed post-launch.

The satellite is described as “mainly used to carry out multi-band, high-speed satellite communication technology verification.” SAST published neither images nor technical details of the satellite.

The TJS series mainly operates in geostationary orbit (GEO).

It is seen by Western analysts as potentially carrying out classified missions including signals intelligence, early warning missions and satellite inspection activities to support the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

China now has 17 main TJS satellites in orbit, with no apparent TJS-8 satellite, and the latest launches skipping TJS-18.

A SAST mission patch appears to depict the King of the South, one of the Four Heavenly Kings; a set of Buddhist deities each guarding one cardinal direction of the world.

Patches for the earlier launches of TJS-15, 16 and 17, across March and April, each also featured one of the deities.

The launches used a mix of Long March 7A rockets lifting off from Wenchang, and Long March 3B and 3C rockets from Xichang. The 3C uses two side boosters while the 3B uses four.

TJS-15 is located at 90.2 degrees East on the geostationary (GEO) belt, above a position off the western coast of Indonesia.

TJS-16 and 17 are located at 152.5 and 152.8 degrees East respectively, around 200 kilometers apart, and above the offshore islands of Papua New Guinea.

China launched its first TJS satellite in 2015, but has launched nine such satellites over the past year and a half.

Notable missions include TJS-13, launched in December 2024, joining two other Chinese satellites, Shiyan-10 (01) and Shiyan-10 (02), in a highly elliptical, Molniya-like orbit, and TJS-3, launched in 2018, which released an object which carried out subsequent maneuvers.

Yaogan-40 (02)

Monday’s launch followed a little over 24 hours after China added to its classified Yaogan satellite series.

A Long March 6A rocket lifted off from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, North China, at 9:27 a.m. Eastern (1327 UTC), May 11.

CASC announced launch success around an hour after liftoff, revealing the passengers to be the Yaogan-40 (02) group.

It briefly described the satellites as mainly to be used for electromagnetic environment detection and related technical experiments.

At time of reporting, the U.S. Space Force had not yet cataloged objects from the launch. However, airspace closure notices suggest the spacecraft were sent into a near polar orbit.

This echoes the launch of the Yaogan-40 (01) group in September 2023, which entered near-polar orbits after launch on a Long March 6A from Taiyuan.

Yaogan (“remote sensing”) satellites are thought to be for users including military customers, with uses thought to include optical imaging, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and electronic intelligence (ELINT) satellites.

Few details, if any, are available about the satellites. They are typically described as being for purposes including land survey, crop yield estimation, environmental management, meteorological warning and forecasting, and disaster prevention and reduction or “electromagnetic environment detection and related tests.”

The missions were China’s 24th and 25th orbit launch attempts of 2025.

A series of launches are expected this week, with Long March 2D and Zhuque-2 launches expected from Jiuquan, northwest China, and a sea launch of the Ceres-1 solid rocket.

The launch of the Tianwen-2 near Earth asteroid sample return and main belt comet mission is expected from Xichang before the end of the month.

Pentagon taps more firms to build commercial-military satellite network

The Pentagon’s technology arm is expanding an initiative to tap commercial satellites and infrastructure to deliver battlefield data faster and more securely.

The Defense Innovation Unit, an organization based in Silicon Valley that works with the tech industry to help fill military needs, announced May 12 it had added more than a dozen new companies to its Hybrid Space Architecture (HSA) project.

The HSA initiative, launched in 2022, brings together Earth imaging satellite operators, broadband providers, and companies specializing in cybersecurity, cloud computing, and quantum encryption.

The goal is to create an infrastructure that ensures data from satellites is delivered to military users securely and without disruptions.

DIU is working on the project in collaboration with the Air Force Research Laboratory, the U.S. Space Force and other military organizations.

The latest round of companies added to the project includes Capella Space, EdgeCortix, Eutelsat America Corp. OneWeb Technologies, Fairwinds Technologies and AST Space Mobile, Illumina Computing Group, Lockheed Martin Space, MapLarge, SES Space & Defense, Skycorp, SkyFi, Ursa Space, and Viasat.

They join eight other firms that were brought on board in 2022: Aalyria Technologies, Amazon Web Services, Amazon Kuiper, Anduril, Astranis, ATLAS Space Operations, Enveil, Google, Palantir, Planet Labs, Microsoft, and SpiderOak.

Instead of traditional defense contracts, the Defense Innovation Unit uses “other transaction agreements” — a type of public-private partnership that requires companies to prototype and test technologies upfront, often sharing development costs with the government.

In this case, vendors are being asked to build and demonstrate ways to gather, transmit, and process data securely across the globe—and deliver it to military units.

“DIU’s ability to rapidly integrate and deliver a hybrid space network architecture is testament to its process of allowing commercial innovators to solve complex problems at speed and scale by applying their solutions to DoD’s problems,” said Steve Butow, who leads DIU’s space portfolio.

Butow has championed the project as a way to give military commands around the world easier and secure access to tactical intelligence, without the burden of carrying multiple radios or specialized satellite terminals.

‘Real time access to information’

The companies in the hybrid space network project will take part in live demonstrations starting this summer, supporting key regions where U.S. military forces operate, including the Indo-Pacific, Europe, Central Asia, and South America.

DIU says the goal is to have a working version of the hybrid network ready by 2026. To support that timeline, DIU said it plans to activate a live version of the network to test in exercises and wargames.

The promise of the hybrid architecture lies in its ability to route data through multiple commercial and military channels, which DIU says can help overcome problems such as bad weather, cyber threats, or equipment failures.

“HSA seeks to integrate commercial persistent sensing, data fusion, high-performance edge compute, and resilient data transport capabilities to significantly enhance real-time access to information,” DIU said in a statement.

The U.S. Space Force has awarded contracts worth a combined $17.6 million to two Colorado-based defense firms to build prototype cloud-based marketplaces that would connect military satellite operations with commercial and government-owned antennas.

Auria Space and Sphinx Defense, both based in Colorado Springs, will develop competing versions of what the Space Force calls a “joint antenna marketplace,” the military branch’s Space Systems Command announced May 12.

Auria’s contract is valued at $8.1 million, while Sphinx will receive $9.5 million.

The marketplaces will aim to address a growing bottleneck in military satellite operations: too many satellites and too few ground stations capable of communicating with them.

The goal is to add capacity to the aging Satellite Control Network (SCN), a collection of parabolic antennas around the globe, some of which are decades old and can only communicate with one satellite at a time.

“Our current ground infrastructure that’s heavily relied on by operators cannot handle the sheer number of missions we anticipate,” said Lt. Devrin Chullanandana, an official with Space Systems Command, in comments made last October.

“USSF operators are very concerned about the SCN being able to handle the sheer number of satellites” projected to be launched.

The joint antenna marketplace would function as a digital clearinghouse where satellite operations centers could dynamically schedule communication sessions — known as “contacts” — with antennas, based on availability, bandwidth and mission needs.

It would integrate commercial and government-owned ground infrastructure into a single, cloud-based scheduling system, aiming to boost flexibility and reduce contact delays.

Commercial satellite operators for years have urged the military to take advantage of underused commercial ground infrastructure.

Many commercial antenna providers report unused capacity, which could help ease pressure on government-owned assets without major capital investments.

Separately, the Space Force is buying new phased array satellite antennas under the $1.4 billion Satellite Communication Augmentation Resource (SCAR) program.

Kremlin issues update on preparations for potential Ukraine talks

Direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul later this week are still possible, and Moscow is making preparations should they take place, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said.

On Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to resume direct negotiations between Moscow and Kiev to find a lasting settlement to the conflict that would address its root causes.

He suggested that the talks could take place in Türkiye’s largest city on Thursday.

According to Ukrinform, this was reported by Astra on Telegram, citing the so-called "government" of the temporarily occupied territory of the Luhansk region.

"The Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked a plant in occupied Luhansk. […] Three Ukrainian aircraft-type strike UAVs targeted the asphalt plant. […] As a result, a fire broke out at the industrial site.

Less than an hour later, another drone struck the plant's territory," the report said.

Drones, gold, and threats: Sudan’s war raises regional tensions

On May 4, Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a barrage of suicide drones at Port Sudan, the army’s de facto wartime capital on the Red Sea.

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) accused foreign actors of supporting the RSF’s attacks and even threatened to sever ties with one of its biggest trading partners.

The RSF surprised many with the strikes. It had used drones before, but never hit targets as far away as Port Sudan, which used to be a haven, until last week.

“The strikes … led to a huge displacement from the city. Many people left Port Sudan,” Aza Aera, a local relief worker, told Al Jazeera. “If the aggression continues … I think I’ll leave like everyone else.”

A drone war

When a civil war erupted between the SAF and RSF in April 2023, the army had aerial supremacy due to its fleet of warplanes and drones.

Yet the RSF is closing the gap with an arsenal of suicide drones, which it used on Port Sudan for six consecutive days, hitting an army base, a civilian airport, several hotels, and a fuel depot, which caused a massive blast.

“Sudan had already entered the phase of drone warfare over the last … few months at least,” said Suliman Baldo, the founder of the Sudan Transparency and Policy Tracker think tank.

The army largely relies on the relatively affordable Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drones, reportedly receiving $120m worth of them since late 2023.

Bayraktars can travel long distances with a large payload, and the army says they helped it regain swaths of territory from the RSF in eastern and central Sudan between September 2024 and March 2025, including the capital Khartoum.

Despite losing significant ground, the RSF then stepped up its aggression against the SAF with Chinese-made drones, according to a recent report by Amnesty International.

The human rights group, Sudan’s de facto military government and other monitors all accuse the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of purchasing these drones – and other weapons – and supplying them to the RSF.

The UAE has denied the accusations as “baseless”.

“The UAE strongly rejects the suggestion that it is supplying weapons to any party involved in the ongoing conflict in Sudan,” said Salem Aljaberi, a spokesperson for the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement on X.

Regardless, the increasing use of drones by both sides marks an escalation and risks exacerbating an already catastrophic situation for civilians, according to experts and human rights monitors.

Bold announcement

On May 6, the army-backed authorities in Port Sudan announced the severing of all ties with the UAE after accusing it of being behind the attacks.

That announcement was not well thought-out, according to Baldo. Sudan’s army could lose tens of millions of dollars in gold revenue, as well as access to vital banking operations, he told Al Jazeera.

A UAE-backed company, Emiral Resources, owns a majority of shares in Sudan’s largest gold mine, the Kush mine.

According to the Central Bank of Sudan, about 97 percent of gold exports from army-controlled areas went to the UAE in 2023.

Kush exported at least one tonne of gold in 2024, although it is unclear how much higher the number is for production.

Furthermore, UAE banks own a majority share in the Bank of Khartoum, whose digital platform, Bankak, facilitates money transfers for millions of displaced Sudanese and public institutions.

The UAE state also owns El Nilein Bank, which manages and approves international transactions on behalf of Port Sudan, according to a report that Baldo co-authored in March for the Chatham House think tank.

“This was a rushed decision [to cut ties with the UAE] that will have serious consequences … due to the UAE’s control over [Sudan’s] national economy,” Baldo told Al Jazeera.

Major escalation?

Sudan’s army has not clarified how and when it will sever ties with the UAE.

On May 6, SAF chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan vowed in a video to “defeat the militia (RSF) and those who help them”.

Al Jazeera sent written questions to army spokesperson Nabil Abdullah, asking if Port Sudan will implement the announced suspension.

No reply was received by time of publication.

For its part, the UAE’s Foreign Ministry told Al Jazeera in an email that it will not retaliate against Port Sudan.

“The statement issued by the so-called ‘Security and Defence Council’ will not affect the deep-rooted and enduring ties between the UAE and the Republic of the Sudan, and their peoples,” the emailed statement said.

Meanwhile, experts and observers believe the war in Sudan is trending towards a major escalation.

The army’s regional backers could respond to the RSF’s increased use of drones by doubling down on their support for the army, warned Alan Boswell, a Sudan expert for the International Crisis Group.

“The obvious risk [from the attacks on Port Sudan] is that it brings other [regional powers] into deeper involvement on the army’s side,” he told Al Jazeera.

“We could see an escalating war with greater and greater firepower, and nothing would be left of Sudan’s infrastructure by the end of it.”

Residents of Xi’an, China Spot Swirling ‘Dragon’ UFO During Heavy Thunderstorm

In the night of May 8, a severe thunderstorm hit the metropolis of Xi’an in Shaanxi, western China.

Amidst the downpour and lightning, multiple residents captured video of an airborne “dragon-shaped” object in the skies above the ancient imperial capital, complete with a “dragon’s roar” resembling the low bellow of an ox.

Various state-run media outlets, such as Beijing Daily, reported on the sudden thunder and rainstorm that hit Xi’an.

Videos posted to social media show a dark, elongated unidentified flying object (UFO) amidst the flashes lighting up the clouds; the “dragon” disappearing and reappearing intermittently.

Footage taken by a woman posting a social media account called “It’s Lina” appeared to capture a resonating roaring sound during the weather event.

In the video caption, the woman wrote: “Is this a ‘dragon’s roar’? It sounds like the bellow of an ox.

There’s no construction going on around my home, and the sound came from the southern side of the Qinling Mountains. It was very deep.

This 28-second recording doesn’t do it justice — this wasn’t made by any car or motorcycle. In person, it sounded vast and penetrating, as if it came from far away.”

Another internet user commented that the sound resembled that of a tiger’s roar, and caused their pet kitten to sit up in attention.

Netizens offered various comments on the UFO footage. Many were in agreement that the videos posted were unedited, and that the sounds captured therein were not produced by cars, aircraft, or other machinery.

That same evening, in Ankang, a city about 100 miles south of Xi’an, another netizen captured footage of three “dragons” circling in the sky.

Two of them were bright blue-green in color, moving through the night like a spinning Taiji symbol. Below them was a smaller black object that faded in and out of visibility.

Xi’an, a city of about 9 million, is the capital of Shaanxi Province. Located near the geographic center of modern China’s territory, Xi’an was known in ancient times as Chang’an (長安), meaning “eternal peace,” and served as the capital of most imperial dynasties from the Qin to Tang eras (221 BC to AD 907).

To the south of Xi’an lies the Qinling mountain range, which in traditional Chinese geomancy is said to be a critical “dragon’s vein” (龍脈) for the entire country.
