Netanyahu trial testimony ends early due to diplomatic developments

 

At the start of the hearing, lead defense attorney Amit Hadad requested that, due to the weighty diplomatic happenings, the hearing be cut short.

 

The criminal trial testimony hearing of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began as scheduled on Monday morning, still in the stage of defense questioning before cross-examination, but as he is questioned by the defense lawyers of other defendants listed in the indictment.

 

The testimony ended at 11:15, ahead of the release of hostage Edan Alexander, in a deal brokered between the Americans and Hamas. Besides Alexander, 58 hostages remain in Hamas captivity.

 

At the start of the hearing, lead defense attorney Amit Hadad requested that due to the weighty diplomatic happenings - including the visit of Steve Witkoff, the Trump administration’s Middle East envoy, to Israel - that the hearing be cut short, as well due to the fact that Netanyahu “slept only one-and-a-half hours last night” due to the developments.

 

These defense hearings will take place for approximately another two weeks and are part of the defense’s questioning stage. After it ends, the prosecution will begin its own cross-examination questioning of Netanyahu.

 

The attorneys for Shaul and Iris Elovich and Arnon “Noni” Mozes will question Netanyahu - the primary defendant - on behalf of their clients, in two of the three cases levied against the prime minister.

Whistleblowers say human trafficking hotline operator failed to report tips to law enforcement

 

Senator Chuck Grassley is scrutinizing the multi-million dollar grant for Polaris Project to run the hotline after learning of the whistleblowers' allegations.

 

The Polaris Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that administers the National Human Trafficking Hotline, regularly fails to refer tips to law enforcement for investigation, whistleblowers told the Senate Judiciary Committee, confirming an earlier complaint from a bipartisan group of state attorneys general. The Polaris Project in 2023 received $4,831,020 in government grants, according to the charity's IRS filings.

 

The National Human Trafficking Hotline says that it is supported by the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) of the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of a financial assistance award totaling $5 million annually.

 

In a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy, whose agency oversees Polaris' use of ACF funding, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley presented the evidence turned over to Congress by an anonymous employee of Polaris and detailed the allegations.

 

The whistleblowers' disclosures, Grassley wrote, “appear to confirm the allegations that Polaris is not reporting instances of potential human trafficking to law enforcement.”

 

Neither Project Polaris nor the Health and Human Services department responded to requests for comment from Just the News.

 

Reports of sex trafficking stamped "Work not required"

“As you are aware, Polaris has received millions in taxpayer dollars to run this hotline, and if the grant is renewed, will receive an additional $9 million in funding,” Grassley wrote. “It’s imperative that HHS ensures the hotline is running efficiently and effectively to protect the countless victims of human trafficking.”

 

The evidence published by Senator Grassley shows Polaris received a report of a “possible [sex trafficking (ST)] situation” in March 2025. The nonprofit’s staff marked the case “Yes” for the involvement of potential minors and determined the case had “high indicators” of trafficking, according to Grassley's review of the case file. The tip also reported that the alleged victim was worried “[s]he’s going to be physically hurt by the pimp running this company,” and indicated the alleged trafficker forces other women to work for him or her.

 

Despite the seriousness of the allegations, the case file shows a Polaris staff member reviewed the report and labeled the file “Work Not Required.” The first whistleblower said this designation means the case was closed, and law enforcement was not notified, Grassley wrote.

 

A second whistleblower reported to the committee a separate February 2025 tip alleging a victim and her minor sister were being held by two potential traffickers in the United States. However, the potential victim stopped communicating because of “safety concerns,” the records show. Polaris workers labeled the case “Work Not Required” and described the status as “unclear situation as [potential victim (PV)] stopped responding.”

 

As in the other case, the designation meant that Polaris did not report the possible trafficking incident to law enforcement and no further action was taken.

Suspects nearly sneak baby goat in shopping bag into Jerusalem holy site for Second Passover sacrifice, but are foiled by police and Waqf officials who wrestle them back

 

Police arrested nine Jewish men who tried to smuggle a sacrificial goat onto the Temple Mount in Jerusalem Monday afternoon.

 

The group of young men were filmed in the Old City heading to one of the entrances to the Temple Mount compound with a baby goat concealed in a Rami Levy supermarket shopping bag.

 

Scuffles with police guarding the entrance broke out as the group tried to force its way into the compound.

 

One of the young men chanted the Shema prayer as police scrambled to block their entry, but some were able to slip by the officers, including the suspect with the goat.

 

Once inside the compound, the man carrying the kid fell to the ground in prostration, having cast the pink shopping bag aside.

 

He stood back up and then moments later was wrestled back by Waqf officials while he held the animal under one arm.

 

Others in the group were unable to make it through and began to brawl with a religious Muslim man outside the gate. One of the Jewish men shouted, “Who are you?” at the older man as a cop placed himself between the two.

Myocarditis after SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 vaccination: Epidemiology, outcomes, and new perspectives

 

ABSTRACT

Myocarditis, typically manifesting as myopericarditis, is among the serious cardiac consequences observed over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. We performed a comprehensive, evidence-based literature synthesis of findings from clinical trial data reanalyses, post-marketing surveillance, large observational studies, and other diverse research sources that help shed light on the phenomenon of myocarditis post SARS-CoV-2 infection versus COVID-19 vaccine-induced myocarditis. Our conclusions refute several claims previously made by public health agencies and professional associations, namely the following: (1) the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and Omicron infections have caused more cases of myocarditis than the COVID-19 mRNA immunizations; (2) mRNA vaccine-induced myocarditis is typically mild, transient, and rare, with no long-term sequelae; and (3) the risk-benefit calculus favors continued use of these products despite evidence of more iatrogenic cases. We address each of these misconceptions by applying a combination of epidemiological, clinical, and immunological perspectives. We urge governments to remove the COVID-19 mRNA products from the market due to the well-documented risk of myocardial damage, a risk that is strongest for younger males (<40 years old).

It was just after sunset on Friday when an Israeli missile slammed into an UNRWA building in the middle of Jabaliya refugee camp in north Gaza, killing four people—including a child, according to eyewitnesses—and severely damaging a food distribution center, warehouse, and health center run by the UN refugee agency.

 

“The entire area was destroyed and turned to rubble,” Al Moatassem Shalayel, 20, who had left the area moments before, told Drop Site. “Everything was shut down and bombed. It’s all gone now, completely destroyed,” Shalayel added. “[Israel’s goal] is to starve and suffocate the people. Their aim is to keep us from eating or drinking. They just want to leave us hungry.”

 

The May 9 attack on the UN distribution center came as part of Israel’s scorched-earth bombing campaign that resumed in full force on March 18 following a brief “ceasefire.” Since then, Israel has targeted charity kitchens, displacement camps, schools, hospitals, so-called “humanitarian zones,” and other civilian gatherings on a regular basis. On Saturday alone, Israeli airstrikes bombed two tents used for preparing food in Khan Younis and Gaza City.

 

Over 2,700 Palestinians have been killed over the past seven weeks, including more than 900 children, according to the Gaza health ministry. The official death toll since the beginning of Israel’s genocidal assault is nearly 53,000, with many thousands more missing under the rubble.

One Major Controversy About Pam Bondi Will Make Gun Owners Very Concerned

 

Pam Bondi is proving to be a very controversial figure.

After Colorado passed an extreme anti-gun bill that would make it one of the most hostile states in the nation to gun owners, conservatives in the state rushed into action.

 

They immediately hoped that Attorney General Pam Bondi would take action from the federal level to investigate the state and perhaps undo the damage that the bill caused.

 

But so far there has been no sign that she is actually going to do that, which is leaving gun owners in Colorado highly concerned.

 

Guns have clearly never been a top priority for Bondi, who has a very mixed track record dating back to her time as AG in Florida.

 

But she could at least throw a bone to gun owners by looking into this bill in Colorado and seeing if there’s anything she can do.

 

As of right now, however, there is no indication she is going to do that, and she might well leave the entire Second Amendment movement disappointed.

 

According to an article after Gov. Jared Polis signed the bill, “Colorado’s House Republicans are asking the federal government to review the constitutionality of a recently signed law requiring individuals to take a safety training course through Colorado Parks and Wildlife to be eligible to buy or sell semiautomatic rifles, shotguns, or handguns with detachable magazines.

 

“While Gov. Jared Polis signed the bill into law last week, it will not take effect until Aug. 1, 2026.”

 

So far, however, Bondi has not taken action against the bill, nor has she given any verbal indication that she’s going to do so any time soon.

 

Gun owners voted en masse for Donald Trump in the last election, and they certainly were hoping for more than this out of his administration.

 

The article continues, “Supporters have argued the bill would help prevent mass shootings, pointing to attacks in Colorado at the Aurora movie theater, Boulder King Soopers and Club Q in Colorado Springs, which they said were all carried out using semiautomatic weapons with detachable magazines.

 

“Opponents, including the gun rights advocacy group Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, have countered that the bill further chips away at the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens and forces the wildlife agency to handle responsibilities outside of its scope — without accomplishing its purported goal to stop violence.”

 

Bondi has not made it clear which side she agrees with, and in fact it seems that she just would rather have nothing to do with this debate at all.

 

She seems to have other top priorities besides the Second Amendment, and she is spending her time focusing on those, without taking any significant action on guns.

 

This is not going to be the news that gun owners want to hear, as they were hoping to have an administration that is 100% friendly to them, but Pam Bondi instead appears neutral at best.

But he can’t be bought, unlike most of the politicians in this country. And he is standing here for the American people.

 

I don’t know why there are writers like Elizabeth Warren or Robert Reich who are saying that President Trump is on the side of the oligarchs. There has never been a President more willing to stand up to the oligarchs than President Donald Trump.

 

I’m very, very proud of you, Mr. President, for your courage. I’ll say—because I don’t want to be crude—your intestinal fortitude, your stiff spine, and your willingness to stand up for the American people.

 

We have 4.2% of the world’s population. Our country represents 75% of the revenues for pharmaceutical companies. We spend in our country $1,126 per capita on drugs. In Britain, they spend about $240. They spend one-fifth of what we do. And this is true across Europe.

 

And the drug companies—even the European ones—if you ask them, it made no sense what they were saying: that America has to pay for this innovation.

 

It’s not going to happen. What President Trump is saying to our European partners is: you’ve got to raise the amount you’re paying for those drugs and pay your share of the innovation. The United States is no longer subsidizing that.

 

If the Europeans raise the price of their drugs by just 20%, that is $10 trillion that can be spent on innovation. The health of all people across the globe is going to improve because we’re going to have better products.

 

I’m just so grateful to be here today. I never thought this would happen in my lifetime. I have a couple of kids who are Democrats—big Bernie Sanders fans. When I told them this was going to happen, they had tears in their eyes because they thought, “This is never going to happen in our lifetime.”

DP World To Invest $760m in Dominican Republic Port of Caucedo

Dubai-based DP World, a major international logistics company, has announced the launch of a Free Trade Zone in the Dominican Republic. A $760m investment will expand capacity at the Port of Caucedo from 2.5m TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) to 3.1m. The Free Trade Zone will expand onto 225 hectares of thus-far undeveloped land.

 

The expansion aims to attract $3.9b in foreign direct investment to establish the Dominican Republic as a regional nearshoring and trade hub.

 

The Port of Caucedo sits around 1,100 nautical miles from Miami.

 

“By boosting capacity and enabling nearshoring opportunities, we will transform Caucedo into the most advanced logistics hub in the Caribbean, not only strengthening supply chain resilience across the Americas but also creating a powerful engine for economic growth and job creation in the Dominican Republic,” says Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and Group CEO of DP World.

 

The $760m investment will be used in equal shares for the expansion of port infrastructure and development of the FTZ. Port facilities will be expanded to accommodate the largest types of vessels. In the trade zone basic infrastructure like roads and utilities will accompany commercial and marketing centers to attract logistics tenants.

 

“With its proximity to U.S. markets and duty-free access, the Dominican Republic offers a compelling environment for manufacturers and logistics providers, with competitive costs and robust tax incentives. Caucedo already serves as a vital transshipment and logistics hub in the region, and this expansion will enhance its role as a launchpad for global trade,” said Morten Johansen, Chief Operating Officer, DP World Americas.

The US president accused the bloc of unfair trade practices, including barriers to American car exports and shifting pharmaceutical costs

 

US President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of the European Union, labeling it “nastier than China” regarding trade practices.

 

In early April, Washington imposed a sweeping 20% tariff on all EU goods and a 25% tariff on all car imports and metals. While Trump later announced a 90-day reprieve on most trade duties, a baseline 10% tariff and the above-mentioned 25% tariff remain in force until an agreement is reached.

 

“The European Union is in many ways nastier than China,” Trump stated during a press conference at the White House on Monday.

 

“They treated us very unfairly. They sell us 13 million cars; we sell them none. They sell us their agricultural products; we sell them virtually none,” the president claimed, adding that Brussels has been “suing all our companies… Apple, Google, Meta.”

 

The American leader predicted that the EU would “come down a lot,” since the US holds “all the cards.”

 

Trump further stated that the bloc is also to blame, at least in part, for the excessively high prices that Americans have to pay for prescription drugs. According to the president, Brussels has been unfairly exerting “brutal” pressure on pharmaceutical companies to keep prices low in Europe, while refusing to shoulder the fair share of the firms’ research and development and other related costs.

 

However, Washington is now set to “equalize” the situation, Trump promised, concluding that “Europe is gonna have to pay a little bit more…. And America is gonna pay a lot less.”

 

Trump’s remarks came hours after Washington and Beijing agreed during negotiations in Geneva to scrap or suspend most of the new trade duties introduced since early April, pending further talks.

 

As a result, overall US tariffs on Chinese goods will stand at 30% and Chinese tariffs on US goods will be 10%, starting May 14. The two nations will also set up a consultation mechanism to work out further trade policy steps.

 

The EU, for its part, has made several attempts at negotiating trade and tariffs with the US, though none of them have so far yielded a breakthrough.

 

Last Thursday, theEuropean Commission presented a list of countermeasures which could affect €95 billion worth of US goods should negotiations fail.

 

Trump’s trade adviserPeter Navarro warned Brussels that it would be “making a grave mistake” if it went through with the threat, which he described as counterproductive to the talks.

DELIVERING MOST-FAVORED-NATION PRESCRIPTION DRUG PRICING TO AMERICAN PATIENTS

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered:

 

Section 1. Purpose. The United States has less than five percent of the world’s population and yet funds around three quarters of global pharmaceutical profits. This egregious imbalance is orchestrated through a purposeful scheme in which drug manufacturers deeply discount their products to access foreign markets, and subsidize that decrease through enormously high prices in the United States.

The United States has for too long turned its back on Americans, who unwittingly sponsor both drug manufacturers and other countries. These entities today rely on price markups on American consumers, generous public subsidies for research and development primarily through the National Institutes of Health, and robust public financing of prescription drug consumption through Federal and State healthcare programs. Drug manufacturers, rather than seeking to equalize evident price discrimination, agree to other countries’ demands for low prices, and simultaneously fight against the ability for public and private payers in the United States to negotiate the best prices for patients. The inflated prices in the United States fuel global innovation while foreign health systems get a free ride.

This abuse of Americans’ generosity, who deserve low-cost pharmaceuticals on the same terms as other developed nations, must end. Americans will no longer be forced to pay almost three times more for the exact same medicines, often made in the exact same factories. As the largest purchaser of pharmaceuticals, Americans should get the best deal.

 

Sec. 2. Policy. Americans should not be forced to subsidize low-cost prescription drugs and biologics in other developed countries, and face overcharges for the same products in the United States. Americans must therefore have access to the most-favored-nation price for these products.

My Administration will take immediate steps to end global freeloading and, should drug manufacturers fail to offer American consumers the most-favored-nation lowest price, my Administration will take additional aggressive action.

Trump hopeful for Russia-Ukraine talks

The US president mentioned the possibility of taking part in the Moscow-proposed talks himself

 

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his hopes that direct talks between Moscow and Kiev as proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin will take place and suggested he could even take part in them.

 

Trump delivered the remarks during a press conference on Monday, describing the proposed meeting in Istanbul, Türkiye, as “very important.” He even floated the possibility that he might participate in the negotiations.

 

“I think you may have a good result at the Thursday meeting in Türkiye between Russia and Ukraine.I believe the two leaders are going to be there. I was thinking about flying over. I don’t know where I’m going to be on Thursday, I’ve got so many meetings, but I was thinking about actually flying over there,” Trump stated.

 

The suggestion was swiftly welcomed by Ukraine’s leader, Vladimir Zelensky, who called it a “right idea” that could “change a lot.”

 

Early on Sunday, Putin proposed resuming direct peace negotiations with Kiev without any preconditions, stating that the talks could ultimately yield “some kind of new truce” and a ceasefire. “We are set on serious negotiations with Ukraine. Their aim is to eliminate the root causes of the conflict and to achieve a long-term lasting peace for a historical perspective,” the president stressed.

 

The proposal received a mixed reaction from Kiev and its Western backers, all of whom reiterated their demand to establish a 30-day truce before beginning any negotiations. Trump, however, urged Kiev to “immediately” accept the proposal and engage in talks.

 

It was not immediately clear on what basis Trump concluded that the Russian and Ukrainian leaders would be meeting on Thursday. After Trump urged Ukraine to agree to the proposal, Zelensky claimed he would be waiting for Putin in Türkiye “personally” but reiterated the 30-day ceasefire demand.

 

On Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Moscow’s position that Russia remains committed to “resuming direct talks in Istanbul without any preconditions” but did not comment on the prospect of Putin participating in the talks.

GETTING A BETTER DEAL FOR AMERICANS: President Trump is once again taking action to keep pharmaceutical manufacturers from charging Americans high drug prices while giving steep discounts to other wealthy nations.

• According to recent data, the prices Americans pay for brand-name drugs are more than three times the price other OECD nations pay, even after accounting for discounts manufacturers provide in the U.S.

• The United States has less than five percent of the world’s population, yet funds roughly 75% of global pharmaceutical profits.

• Drug manufacturers discount their products to gain access to foreign markets and then subsidize those discounts through high prices charged in America—in essence, Americans are subsidizing drug-manufacturer profits and foreign health systems, despite drug manufacturers benefiting from generous research subsidies and enormous healthcare spending by the U.S. Government.

• In his first term, President Trump took historic action to keep Medicare and seniors from paying more for drugs than economically comparable countries, which the Biden Administration rescinded before it could take effect.

• Instead of fixing this problem, the Biden Administration’s greatest achievement was to negotiate prices that were, on average, 78 percent higher than in 11 comparable countries as part of Biden’s effort to “beat Medicare.”

Leonid Slutsky has urged the Ukrainian leadership to rescind a 2022 order banning direct negotiations with Moscow

 

A senior Russian MP has blasted Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky for continuing to block peace negotiations with Moscow, saying Kiev should “stop the clownery” and return to diplomacy.

 

In an interview with RT on Monday, State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Leonid Slutsky noted that Zelensky “banned negotiations for himself.” He was referring to the Ukrainian leader’s 2022 order banning direct negotiations with Russia as long as President Vladimir Putin remains in office.

 

“He should recall his first profession less often and stop the clownery,” Slutsky said, in an apparent jab at Zelensky’s past as a comedian.

 

On Sunday, the Russian president proposed resuming direct negotiations with Ukraine without any preconditions on May 15 in Istanbul. The peace settlement process must start with talks, which could ultimately yield “some kind of new truce and a new ceasefire,” according to Putin.

 

Slutsky urged the Ukrainian leadership be “rational,” calling negotiations the “only sensible step.”

 

“We are ready to choose our delegation and fly to Istanbul even this minute,” he said. “Of course, the talks won’t be easy, but I hope we can truly bring the military phase of this conflict to an end. It is in everyone’s interest.”

 

The lawmaker claimed that worldwide support for Russia’s offer is growing as the global majority has formed around Putin’s ideas of a multipolar world. “We must face reality and start negotiations. I urge everyone to morally support this position,” Slutsky said.

 

He added that the number of countries supporting the conflict is “approaching zero,” and that “the path toward peace has been laid out by the Russian president, endorsed by US President [Donald Trump] and all reasonable people.”

African state orders expulsion of French embassy staff – media

Algeria accuses France of bypassing diplomatic protocol, including failing to notify Algiers before appointing personnel

 

Algeria has ordered the immediate dismissal of a number of French diplomatic personnel whose appointments by Paris did not follow established protocols, the North African state’s press service (APS) reported on Sunday.

 

According to the outlet, France did not comply with required procedures in the appointments of at least fifteen employees who were assigned to diplomatic or consular positions in Algiers.

 

On Sunday, Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned a senior French embassy official to protest “serious and repeated” breaches of international conventions governing diplomatic appointments.

 

“These employees, who previously held mission passports, have been granted diplomatic passports to facilitate their entry into Algeria… The same list included two employees from the French Ministry of the Interior, who were intended to perform part of the duties of those recently declared persona non grata,” APS reported, citing sources.

 

The alleged diplomatic breach comes as relations between the two countries remain strained on several fronts.Algeria has accused France of repeatedly denying entry to holders of Algerian diplomatic passports. Admitting Ukraine into the EU would only prolong the hostilities between Moscow and Kiev and risk dragging the bloc into the conflict, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has warned.

 

Ukraine, which has made EU membership a national priority, formally applied to join the bloc in February 2022, days after the escalation of the conflict with Russia.Hungary has repeatedly pushed back against the EU’s goal of admitting Ukraine by 2030 – a target recently reiterated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

 

On Monday, Orban reiterated Budapest’s opposition to accession, calling it a decision that could shape the bloc’s future for the worse.

 

“As a country neighboring Ukraine, we believe that if Ukraine is admitted to the European Union, it will mean war,” Orban told the conference of EU parliamentary speakers in Budapest. The EU has never accepted a country at war – and for “good reason,” he added.

 

The Hungarian leader also expressed regret over the commitment of some EU leaders to continued military aid for Kiev.

 

“We have a different view. We think the longer the war lasts, the more lives will be lost and the worse the situation will become on the battlefield,” Orban said.

 

Ukraine still faces major hurdleson its path to joining the bloc, with full membership requiring unanimous EU approval and sweeping reforms, including anti-corruption efforts, improved governance, and legal alignment with EU standards.

A Ukrainian military recruiter has been filmed punching a man twice in the stomach, according to footage widely shared on social media.The victim appeared to offer no resistance, although local authorities accused him of “provocative actions.”

 

The incident reportedly took place during an ID check in the northeastern city of Kharkov. The footage, which was undated, was filmed from a nearby building and was shared by the Strana.ua outlet on Sunday.

Anyone who owned an Apple device over the last decade may be able to claim part of a $95 million class action lawsuit against the tech giant.

 

According to the lawsuit, iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and MacBooks dating back to 2014 may have secretly recorded their users' private conversations after the devices unintentionally activated Apple's voice assistant Siri.

 

A notice about the case, Lopez v. Apple, has advised anyone who believes Siri spied on their confidential or private calls between September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024 to submit a claim for damages.

 

Apple's iMacs, Apple TV streaming boxes, HomePod speakers, and iPod Touches are also included in the lawsuit.

 

Although Apple has denied that their devices spied on users, the $3 trillion company reached a settlement in the case, agreeing to give users up to $20 per Siri device in their claim.

 

However, that amount could end up being less depending on the number of people making claims against Apple.

 

Each customer can also only claim up to five Apple devices, meaning that the most a person can recover from the alleged spying case is $100.

 

Apple users have until July 2, 2025 to enter their claim in the settlement, which can be done by on the Lopez Voice Assistant Settlement website. https://lopezvoiceassistantsettlement.com/submit-claim

 

Some Apple customers may have received an email or letter in the mail that provided them with a claim identification code and confirmation code that allowed them to enter the settlement right away.

 

However, you don't need to have received a notice to make a claim. For those filing on the settlement website, you'll have to swear under oath that you experienced an unauthorized activation of your Siri voice assistant while having a private conversation.

 

If Apple users are not sure if that actually happened, they can find out if they're eligible for the settlement by speaking with the lawsuit's administrators on their website or over the phone.

 

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in 2021 after some Apple users claimed that recordings of their private conversations were obtained by Apple and shared with third parties after the Siri feature on their devices was unknowingly turned on.

 

Plaintiffs in the lawsuit, including lead plaintiff Fumiko Lopez, alleged that they received targeted ads based on the topics discussed in their private conversations near Siri-enabled devices.

 

Two plaintiffs claimed they saw ads for Air Jordan sneakers and Olive Garden after discussing those brands aloud. Another person received an ad for a medical treatment after talking about the procedure privately with their doctor.

 

Moreover, an Apple whistleblower came forward in 2019, revealing to The Guardian how Apple third-party contractors listened to recordings to assess Siri's accuracy.

 

The whistleblower revealed that contractors regularly heard private recordings, including medical discussions, criminal activities, and intimate moments, captured due to accidental activations of the Siri voice assistant.

 

After the bombshell report, Apple issued a statement defending their practice of reviewing audio samples taken using Siri.

 

They added that only an extremely small number of Siri recordings were studied and the recordings were anonymized, not linked to Apple IDs, and that contractors were bound by strict confidentiality agreements.

 

'Our process involved reviewing a small sample of audio from Siri requests — less than 0.2 percent — and their computer-generated transcripts, to measure how well Siri was responding and to improve its reliability,' Apple stated in 2019.

 

Despite their defense of the tactics, Apple would suspend the program just days after the whistleblower report.

 

For those who decide to join the settlement, there is a catch to taking the small payout from Apple.

 

'Unless you exclude yourself with an opt-out request, you cannot sue, continue to sue, or be part of any other lawsuit against Apple arising out of or related to the claims in this case,' the settlement website explained.

 

A final settlement hearing is scheduled for August 1, which will decide whether to approve the agreement between Apple and its customers.

 

The time it takes for those payments to reach Apple users will depend on whether anyone files an appeal to the settlement decision.

 

If there are no appeals to the $95 million deal, the checks are excepted to start rolling out shortly after the court closes the case this summer.

Episcopal Church Announces It Violates the Doctrine of their Faith to Help White Refugees

When I first read the headlines on social media claiming the Episcopal Church had announced it was against the doctrine of their faith to help white refugees, I will admit I thought the headlines were clickbait and over blown. However, then I went to read the actual announcement and press release from the Church…. It’s true.

 

The Episcopal Church has announced, publicly, they were contacted by the federal government as part of an ongoing contract for refugee resettlement, to assist in the transition of white Afrikaner farmers who are fleeing racial violence and given refugee status by the Trump administration.

 

Specifically, because of the color of their skin, the Episcopal Church is now saying, “in light of our church’s steadfast commitment to racial justice … we are not able to take this step.”

 

The Church notes their business model using refugee settlement payments from the United States Government has been disrupted by theTrump administration’s pause on funding, and as a result of their no longer getting paid– in combination with the racial profile of the refugees they are now being asked to assist, they will shut down all refugee settlement efforts. It is a stunning statement:

 

The Episcopal Church – […] “Since January, the previously bipartisan U.S. Refugee Admissions Program in which we participate has essentially shut down. Virtually no new refugees have arrived, hundreds of staff in resettlement agencies around the country have been laid off, and funding for resettling refugees who have already arrived has been uncertain. Then, just over two weeks ago, the federal government informed Episcopal Migration Ministries that under the terms of our federal grant, we are expected to resettle white Afrikaners from South Africa whom the U.S. government has classified as refugees.

 

In light of our church’s steadfast commitment to racial justice and reconciliation and our historic ties with the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, we are not able to take this step.Accordingly, we have determined that, by the end of the federal fiscal year, we will conclude our refugee resettlement grant agreements with the U.S. federal government.” ~ Rev. Obviously, if we drop all pretending, the decision of the Church is based on their superseding doctrine of money, which, in this clear example, outweighs their doctrine of faith.

 

If there was ever a racial discrimination lawsuit teed up for the Dept of Justice Civil Rights Division, it would be this one. The Episcopal Church receives government funds for refugee settlement. The Episcopal Church is admitting the color of the refugee skin is a determining factor in their decision-making of who to assist. There is not a clearer example of self-admitted discrimination than this one.

 

Unfortunately, the DOJ Civil Rights Division is now headed by Deputy AG Harmeet Dhillon, I strongly doubt she will take any action.

EU nastier than China – Trump

 

The US president accused the bloc of unfair trade practices, including barriers to American car exports and shifting pharmaceutical costs

 

US President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of the European Union, labeling it “nastier than China” regarding trade practices.

 

In early April, Washington imposed a sweeping 20% tariff on all EU goods and a 25% tariff on all car imports and metals. While Trump later announced a 90-day reprieve on most trade duties, a baseline 10% tariff and the above-mentioned 25% tariff remain in force until an agreement is reached.

 

“The European Union is in many ways nastier than China,” Trump stated during a press conference at the White House on Monday.

 

“They treated us very unfairly. They sell us 13 million cars; we sell them none. They sell us their agricultural products; we sell them virtually none,” the president claimed, adding that Brussels has been “suing all our companies… Apple, Google, Meta.”

 

The American leader predicted that the EU would “come down a lot,” since the US holds “all the cards.”

 

Trump further stated that the bloc is also to blame, at least in part, for the excessively high prices that Americans have to pay for prescription drugs. According to the president, Brussels has been unfairly exerting “brutal” pressure on pharmaceutical companies to keep prices low in Europe, while refusing to shoulder the fair share of the firms’ research and development and other related costs.

 

However, Washington is now set to “equalize” the situation, Trump promised, concluding that “Europe is gonna have to pay a little bit more…. And America is gonna pay a lot less.”

 

Trump’s remarks came hours after Washington and Beijing agreed during negotiations in Geneva to scrap or suspend most of the new trade duties introduced since early April, pending further talks.

 

As a result, overall US tariffs on Chinese goods will stand at 30% and Chinese tariffs on US goods will be 10%, starting May 14. The two nations will also set up a consultation mechanism to work out further trade policy steps.

 

The EU, for its part, has made several attempts at negotiating trade and tariffs with the US, though none of them have so far yielded a breakthrough.

 

Last Thursday, the European Commission presented a list of countermeasures which could affect €95 billion worth of US goods should negotiations fail.

 

Trump’s trade adviser Peter Navarro warned Brussels that it would be “making a grave mistake” if it went through with the threat, which he described as counterproductive to the talks.

That brought the year-to-date total for the duties up to $63.3 billion and more than 18% aheadof the same period in 2024. Trump instituted 10% across-the-board tariffs on U.S. imports starting April 2, which came on top of other select duties he had leveled previously.

 

While the U.S. is still running a massive budget deficit, the influx in tariffs helped shave some of the imbalance for April, a month in which the Treasury generally runs a surplus because of the income tax filing deadline hitting mid-month.

 

The surplus totaled $258.4 billion for the month, up 23% from the same period a year ago. That cut the fiscal year-to-date total to $1.05 trillion, which is still 13% higher than a year ago.

 

Also on an annual basis, receipts rose 10% in April from 2024, while outlays declined 4%. Year to date, receipts are up 5%, while expenditures have risen 9%.

 

High interest rates are still posing a budgetary burden. Net interest on the $36.2 trillion national debt totaled $89 billion in April, higher than every other category except Social Security. For the fiscal year, net interest has run to $579 billion, also second highest of any outlay.

Spit Science: Why Saliva Is A Great Way To Detect Disease

A few drops of saliva can now reveal what used to require a scalpel, a syringe or a scan. Scientists have developed ways to analyze spit for the tiniest traces of illness – from mouth cancer to diabetes, and even brain diseases like Alzheimer’s.

 

Unlike blood tests or biopsies, saliva is easy to collect, painless and inexpensive. During the COVID pandemic, some countries used saliva-based testing for rapid screening.

 

This isn’t entirely new. Scientists first noticed the diagnostic potential of spit decades ago. In the 1980s, researchers used saliva to detect hormones and drug use. By the 1990s, it was being explored as a way to detect HIV.

 

What’s new is the speed and precision.Today’s techniques can detect subtle molecular shifts that would have been impossible to measure just a few years ago.

 

Saliva holds a surprising amount of information. It’s full of tiny fragments of DNA, RNA, proteins and fats – many of which change when disease takes hold. Researchers have already shown that saliva can be used to detect changes linked to diabetes, Parkinson’s, heart disease and some cancers.

 

A recent study even showed saliva could help distinguish between healthy people and those with mild cognitive impairment, a possible early sign of Alzheimer’s.

 

In dentistry, spit science is being studied for early signs of gum disease and even the risk of tooth decay.

 

A light-based technique called Raman spectroscopy is one of the latest tools being used to scan saliva for hidden chemical changes. It works by bouncing harmless light off molecules in a spit sample and reading the pattern it sends back – a kind of fingerprint for what’s happening inside your body.

 

It sounds like science fiction, but the technology is already being used in labs to detect early signs of cancer and other diseases often before symptoms appear.

 

This could be a gamechanger for oral cancer, which often starts with small, painless changes inside the mouth that are easy to miss. Early detection is vital, but many people don’t realize they have a problem until it’s much harder to treat.

 

A simple spit test during a regular dental check-up could help find cancer early, before it spreads.

 

It’s not just about cancer, either.Saliva is being trialed as a tool to monitor everything from stress levels to infections. Saliva tests could monitor stress levels.

 

Simplicity

What makes saliva so appealing is its simplicity – no needles, no specialist clinics. Samples can often be collected at home, posted to a lab and analysed within hours. This could make a huge difference in places with limited access to healthcare or for people who avoid doctors out of fear, cost or time.

 

Of course, not every disease leaves a clear marker in spit and researchers are still working out which conditions saliva can reliably detect. But the idea of using what’s already naturally produced by the body to give an early warning is a powerful one. It could help catch disease when it’s most treatable, save lives and make healthcare faster, cheaper and more comfortable for everyone.

 

There’s still work to be done before spit tests become part of routine check-ups. Larger clinical trials are needed and researchers are still fine tuning the best ways to analyse and interpret the data. But the direction of travel is clear: the days of saliva being seen as just drool are over.

 

Saliva may not seem glamorous, but thanks to the rise of spit science, it’s fast becoming one of the most promising tools in the fight against disease. A future where your dentist, doctor, or even you could spot health problems early with nothing more than simple spit.

A Utah oil magnate was arrested along with his wife in a dramatic raid on their opulent 27,000-square-foot mansion after allegedly smuggling more than $300 million worth of oil from Mexico to the US with the help of drug cartels, according to reports.

James and Kelly Jensen were arrested on April 23 by US Marshals, who used battering rams to bust through the doors of the couple’s $9.2 million mansion in outside Salt Lake City, KSLTV reported.

“They were unwilling to come out,” Assistant US Attorney Michael Hess said of the family, which has deep political ties — Kelly’s father, Gordon Walker, worked in the US Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Ronald Reagan, while her mother, Carlene Walker, was a Utah state Senator, according to KVEO.

Just days earlier on April 17, the Jensens were indicted on charges they conspired to buy and smuggle more than 2,800 shipments of stolen oil from Mexico into the US as part of an alleged scheme that began three years ago, according to the feds.

The Jensens’ company made payments for the crude oil to “businesses in Mexico that operate only through the permission of Mexican criminal organizations,” according to the feds.

The feds alleged the family used their ill-gotten gains to buy a new home and cars — and have moved to seize them.

Their sons Zachary and Max, were also allegedly in on it and were also indicted, though it is unclear if they were arrested at the mountainside mansion with their parents.

The family owns and operates Arroyo Terminals, a Texas company that buys and sells crude oil at a property just miles from the US border in Rio Hondo.

Trump Orders VA to Build Homeless Veterans Center on West LA Campus

 

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday that aims to create a center for homeless veterans in Los Angeles and to improve medical care across the Department of Veterans Affairs.

 

The order calls for constructing a National Center for Warrior Independence on the campus of the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center that would provide housing and services to 3,000 homeless veterans currently in Los Angeles, with a goal to eventually home 6,000 veterans.

 

The West Los Angeles campus includes a 388-acre tract that was donated in 1888 to house disabled veterans. Its future was embroiled in ongoing litigation between advocates for homeless veterans and the federal government, which earns revenue from the property by leasing a portion of it to the UCLA baseball team, a private school and other private companies.

 

In the executive order, Trump said the property should have facilities to "help our veterans earn back their self-sufficiency," providing housing, substance abuse or addiction treatment and opportunities to "return to productive work and community engagement."

 

Trump required that a plan for the center be drafted within 120 days and that the center be able to house up to 6,000 veterans by Jan. 1, 2028.

 

"Our nation's security, prosperity and freedom would not be possible without our veterans. Many service members paid the ultimate sacrifice. Many others bear visible and invisible wounds from their service. Too many veterans are homeless in America. Each veteran deserves our gratitude," according to the text of Trump's executive order.

 

The order indicates a shift in the federal government's intentions for the property. A California appeals court heard arguments last month in an ongoing lawsuit by homeless advocates who seek to end the leases to private tenants and use the land for housing the homeless.

 

A judge previously had ruled last year that the VA must build 1,800 permanent housing units on the grounds, but the department appealed the decision.

 

The appellate court has not yet issued its decision, but in a statement Friday following the release of the executive order, VA Secretary Doug Collins said the leases constituted "decades of mismanagement."

 

"Today's executive order will enable us to ensure VA's West Los Angeles campus is being used as intended: to benefit veterans," Collins said.

 

Proponents who have fought for years to return the property, which includes a state-run home for elderly veterans, to veteran use, praised the executive order. Rob Reynolds, an Iraq War veteran and advocate for homeless veterans in LA, called the shift the "morally correct thing to do."

 

"There's no reason our veterans should be on the street and dying," Reynolds said during an interview Monday. "I think this is something that everybody, regardless of your political belief, should come together and go, 'OK, let's get our veterans off the street. Let's solve this problem.'"
