Bhattacharya said he envisions people being able to see summaries of similar papers that looked at the same questions.

“A scientific journal put out by the NIH, a high-profile journal will then make publishing replication work a high-profile scientific, high-prestige scientific activity,” he added later.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in May that federal scientists would likely be told to stop publishing in medical journals and, if that happened, the NIH would launch journals that would publish the scientists’ research.

Kennedy said that the existing journals have problems such as not publishing all of the data that underpins studies, while Bhattacharya said the journals will not publish replication research. Both officials have said they want the government to devote resources to replication, with Kennedy estimating that 20 percent of the NIH budget be designated for that purpose.

Replication is the process of taking a study, repeating it, and seeing if the results are the same.

Liberals under Prime Minister Mark Carney are spending $1.5 million to make LGBT parades “safer.”

During the June 10 “pride” flag raising ceremony on Parliament Hill, Mark Carney lamented backlash against the LGBT movement this June, while promising an additional $1.5 million in funding for pride parades.

“One of the strengths of Canada is recognizing that people can be who they want to be and love who they want to love. The federal government – we are the defenders of those rights,” Carney said.

“Unfortunately, around the world, there’s a backlash struggling against the progress that has been made,” he continued. “In this time, Canada will always stand up for the vulnerable and the equal rights we cherish. We can take pride in how far we’ve come but we should also recognize there’s far more to do.”

As a result, Carney announced he would send $1.5 million taxpayer dollars to Fierté Canada Pride, the organization that represents local groups which organize pride parades across the country. Continue…

The prospect of Ukraine joining NATO will not be mentioned in the declaration at the bloc’s summit later this month, Bloomberg has reported. Kiev has long sought to become a member of the US-led organization, an aim that Russia views as a threat to its national security.

The one-page draft statement, which was seen by the outlet, focuses solely on NATO’s spending goals, Bloomberg reported on Monday. The document could still be subject to change.

The summit in The Hague will reportedly include only a dinner with the king of the Netherlands and a single working session. The “brevity” of both the declaration and the gathering is reportedly designed to minimize potential public disagreements between US President Donald Trump and other NATO leaders.

“Notably absent from the statement is the prospect of Ukraine joining the military alliance,” Bloomberg wrote.

Last year’s military assistance pledge worth $45 billion will not be renewed either, the report added. In July 2024, then-Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg urged the bloc’s members to make a multi-year commitment to keep providing military aid for Kiev. Doctor Files Lawsuit Against BC Health Authority, Alleging Unsafe Conditions, Bullying at Work

A B.C. emergency room doctor has filed a lawsuit against her former health authority, alleging she faced unsafe conditions at work and was harassed after posting a sign advising patients about hospital wait times.

Dr. Kaitlin Stockton said she lost her job over the sign after it drew negative attention. She has filed a notice of civil claim in B.C. Supreme Court, seeking more than $600,000 for wrongful dismissal, as well as bad faith, aggravated, and punitive damages.

Stockton had worked for more than seven years as an emergency room (ER) physician at two Fraser Health hospitals: Royal Columbian Hospital, and Eagle Ridge Hospital, in the Vancouver suburbs of New Westminster and Port Moody, respectively.

In the lawsuit, Stockton accuses the health authority of creating unsafe conditions for patients and staff, alleging that health-care workers tried to bring attention to the “unsafe” environment and “substandard patient care” resulting from overcapacity and resource shortages.

According to the lawsuit, ER physicians and nurses are “regularly subjected to verbal and physical abuse by patients” and there have been “several instances” of patients bringing weapons into the ER and medical personnel being attacked while walking to and from their vehicles on hospital grounds.

In her lawsuit, Stockton says Fraser Health did not respond to the complaints or make workplace changes. Continue…

State of Emergency Declared in Squamish, BC as Wildfire Risks Mount

The district of Squamish in southern British Columbia has declared a state of local emergency in response to an active wildfire burning out of control near the community of 24,000.

The blaze, located some 45 kilometres north of Vancouver, has grown to 14.4 hectares, prompting a June 10 evacuation alert for residents in the Brackendale and Tantalus Road regions east of Highway 99.

An order signed by Mayor Armand Hurford says the Dryden Creek wildfire poses an “existing or imminent threat to people and property” in the area and a subsequent alert warns residents to be prepared to evacuate their homes on “very short notice.” The alert impacts roughly 100 properties.

Hurford said the decision to declare a state of emergency came from an abundance of caution, and it wasn’t about a change in the fire behaviour. The emergency declaration will remain in place until June 24 unless rescinded.

In addition to online advisories, bylaw officers and RCMP went door-to-door in the alert area to ensure people were ready to evacuate.

“At this time, there is no anticipated changes to Evacuation Alerts given current conditions,” the district said in a late night post on Facebook on June 10. “BC Wildfire Service will continue its efforts until late tonight and will begin again early tomorrow morning.” Continue…

Canadian Military Surpassed 2025 Recruitment Goal, 55 Percent Increase Over Year Prior

Canada’s military welcomed 6,706 new regular force members in the 2024-2025 fiscal year, marking a 55 percent increase from the previous year, to exceed its recruitment goal of 6,496.

The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) has experienced “significant growth” in recruitment of regular force members compared to the 4,313 members gained in 2023-2024, and the 3,927 members gained in 2022-2023, the Department of National Defence told The Epoch Times in a June 10 email.

The number of regular force members grew by approximately 2,000 members from April 1 last year to March 31 this year when accounting for attrition, the department said. The CAF had 65,154 regular force members and 23,561 primary reserve members on April 30, and it anticipates reaching 71,500 regular force members and 30,000 primary reserve members by 2032.

Personnel shortages have plagued the CAF in recent years, with former Defence Minister Bill Blair calling it a “death spiral” in March 2024. New recruitment policies have been implemented since then, including a probation period for new members while their medical and security assessments are being completed.

While intake has increased, the CAF has faced issues retaining the new members, according to a leaked military report obtained by CBC News and covered in May. The attrition rate of new members is double that of the rest of the force, with recruits expressing frustration about the lengthy wait prior to receiving training.

One the biggest complaints among departing recruits is the perceived misalignment of the organization’s focus on cultural change rather than on operational requirements, the report noted. It also said an office to focus on retention had been defunded. Continue…
