LONDON (AP) – Authorities in the second-largest city in Kyrgyzstan, Osh, have removed a towering statue of Vladimir Lenin thought to be the tallest of the revolutionary Soviet leader in Central Asia.

The 23-meter (75-foot) monument was erected in 1975 when Kyrgyzstan was part of the Soviet Union. Photos appeared online Saturday showing the statue flat on the ground after being lowered by a crane.

While many countries formerly part of the Soviet Union have moved to downplay their ties to Russia as part of efforts to reshape national identity, the monument was taken down with little public fanfare and officials in Osh framed the removal as routine city planning.

In a statement, Osh City Hall called the move “common practice” aimed at improving the “architectural and aesthetic appearance” of the area.

Officials also noted that Lenin monuments have been “dismantled or moved to other places” in Russian cities including St Petersburg and Belgorod, and said that the issue “should not be politicized.”

The monument, they said, will be replaced by a flagpole, as was the case when a different Lenin statue was relocated in the capital, Bishkek.

The move came a week after Kyrgyzstan’s ally Russia unveiled a monument to brutal Soviet dictator Josef Stalin at one of Moscow’s busiest subway stations.

Doctors and nurses licensed in the United States can begin working immediately in Ontario hospitals and clinics upon relocating, the provincial government announced.

The announcement on June 5 is part of Ontario’s ongoing plan to strengthen its health care system and to increase the number of health care professionals working in the province.

The latest move will enable qualified U.S.-licensed physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and registered practical nurses to start working in Ontario health settings without first registering with a regulatory college.

Specifically, the American health care professionals will be allowed to work for up to six months while seeking registration with either the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario or the College of Nurses of Ontario.

To be eligible, these physicians and nurses would still need to go through the standard Canadian immigration or work permit process, and that they “must be licensed in their home jurisdiction with no history of misconduct or incompetence.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Ottawa won’t overrule a province’s opposition to pipeline construction, as he will seek consensus from all relevant stakeholders before the project gets the green light.

Carney made the comment during a June 6 press conference, where he outlined his government’s plan to eliminate federal trade barriers and advance nation-building projects through the introduction of the One Canadian Economy Act, also known as Bill C-5.

Carney said the bill consists of two parts. The first will create “one Canadian economy out of 13” with the removal of “federal barriers to internal trade and labour mobility.” The second part supports the development of major projects that align with national interests, contingent on discussions with provinces, territories, and indigenous peoples.

Asked by a reporter if he would impose a pipeline project that has been identified as being in the national interest but for which a province objects, Carney said, “No.”

“Simply no. We must have a consensus of all the provinces and the indigenous people … If a province doesn’t want it, it’s impossible. It’s not the choice of the federal government,” he said in French.

Carney’s remark echoed comments he made in an interview last month, in which he said he would support pipeline development only if there is a “consensus” for their construction. The prime minister subsequently met with provincial and territorial premiers on June 2 to discuss infrastructure and energy project priorities, although the meeting concluded without any specific project commitments. Several regions are experiencing “high risk” air quality levels due to smoke from the wildfires in the prairies.

Environment Canada issued an air quality statement for the Ottawa region on June 5, and expects the statement to last until the morning of June 8.

Downtown Ottawa’s Air Quality Health Index reached “high risk” at 8 p.m. on June 5 and remained there until 2 a.m. on June 7 before tapering off to “moderate risk” levels.

The agency on June 7 listed some cities including Toronto and Montreal as having a moderate to high risk.

While most of Ontario has been experiencing poor air quality due to wildfires in the prairie provinces, eastern Ontario experienced some of the worst air quality and visibility on June 6 with Kingston’s index at “high risk,” Cornwall’s at “high risk,” and Belleville’s at “very high risk.”

As of 4 p.m. on June 7, the index for Ottawa, Kingston, Cornwall, and Belleville had all decreased to “moderate risk” levels. Continue…
