What has long seemed unattainable for successive Canadian governments—meeting NATO’s current defence spending guideline—will be reached this fiscal year, Prime Minister Mark Carney said.
Increasing the pay for soldiers and repairing existing Canadian Armed Forces equipment are some of the measures being planned to reach the target.
Carney announced on June 9 Canada will spend 2 percent of its gross domestic product on defence this year, beating his initial campaign pledge to meet the target by 2030. This is also seven years earlier than his predecessor, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, had initially planned.
Touting the accomplishment could be short-lived. The NATO military alliance is expected to agree later this month to raise the bar to 5 percent, with 3.5 percent dedicated to core defence spending and 1.5 percent to defence and security-related investments, which can include infrastructure.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says she will be attending the upcoming G7 Leaders Summit in Canada held in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17.
Sheinbaum made the announcement during a press conference on June 9, adding that Mexico’s foreign affairs minister is working on setting up bilateral meetings and that it is “likely” a meeting will also take place with U.S. President Donald Trump.
On May 28 Sheinbaum said Prime Minister Mark Carney had invited her to the summit during their initial phone conversation on May 15 but that she hadn’t decided whether to attend. Sheinbaum also said at the time that her invitation could involve a meeting with Trump.
The G7 is made up of the seven developed economies of Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, and Japan, as well as the European Union as a non-enumerated member. Russia was a member of what was the G8 from 1997 until 2014, when it was removed over its invasion and annexation of the Ukrainian region of Crimea.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto have all been invited to the upcoming G7 summit, and all have said they will attend.

The national memorial in Ottawa for the victims of the Holocaust was vandalized, and police said they are investigating.
The monument, sitting on Wellington Street where many government buildings including Parliament Hill are located, was splashed with red paint and the words “Feed me” written on it.
The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) said the act of vandalism was carried out during the night of June 8 to 9, and that its Hate and Bias Crime Unit is leading the investigation. Police encouraged the public to send in tips.
The vandalism, taking place in a context where acts of anti-Semitism have increased in frequency, prompted a flurry of reactions from politicians and advocates.

Holocaust survivor and abortionist Henry Morgentaler was psychologically scarred after surviving Nazi concentration camps, according to a Campaign Life Coalition report.
A newly released expose revealed how Henry Morgentaler went from a Holocaust survivor to Canada’s top abortionist.
On June 9, pro-life organization Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) director of communications Pete Baklinski published a report detailing how Morgentaler took out his anger and violence built up during his imprisonment at Nazis consecration camps on the unborn.
“Even though Morgentaler died over a decade ago, his legacy lives on in the legal and cultural framework he helped build – one that enables Canada’s ongoing genocide against preborn children,” Baklinski told LifeSiteNews.
“While secular society hails him as a ‘hero’ and ‘champion of women,’ the truth is that he was a destroyer,” he continued. “No one in Canadian history has done more to shape the lawless abortion landscape than Morgentaler.”

An Ontario school board refused to apologize for its staff training linking “family” to white supremacy.
In a June 6 statement, the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) defended its staff training program that linked the term “family” to white supremacy, claiming that the statements were taken out of context.
“We are aware that a recent article has caused concern regarding the use of the word family at a WRDSB school staff meeting that occurred in November of 2023,” the statement read. “At this time, we want to take a moment to clarify the context and provide reassurance that in the WRDSB we value and prioritize families.
“The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) believes parents, families and caregivers are important and vital partners in their child’s education,” WRDSB wrote. “We are committed to working together to provide the best education possible for all students.”
However, the school board refused to apologize for the program, instead claiming that its statement condemning the term “family” was taken out of context.
According to WRDSB, “excerpts shared were part of a larger professional development session designed to deepen understanding around language, systemic bias, and how we can work together to ensure all students and families feel seen, respected and included.” Continue…

A video has gone viral that shows the people continuing to pray, but they can no longer be heard.
After a group of Muslims staged a prayer event in front of one of Canada’s main Catholic cathedrals, church bells soon drowned them out.
A video of the event has now gone viral. The video, posted originally on June 8 by user Mariffe that has been shared widely online, shows a group of Muslims in Montreal praying in front of one of Montreal’s cathedrals. When the church bells ring, the people in the video continue to pray but can no longer be heard.
The video of the event, which happened over the weekend, has close to 35,000 views as of publication time.
It is not clear why the people were praying at that exact spot in Montreal. However, it has become commonplace for Muslims to hold mass prayers in public places in Canada and notably in Europe.

An angry crowd in Northern Ireland set houses on fire and injured police officers after Romanian-speaking teens appeared in court
At least 15 police officers were injured during angry protests in Northern Ireland overnight on Monday, following court hearing in which two Romanian-speaking minors were charged with the attempted rape of a local girl. Both have denied the charges.
Northern Ireland police have branded the ensuing unrest as racially motivated violence.
A vigil in the town of Ballymena involving some several hundred people eventually turned violent as masked protesters reportedly started throwing petrol bombs and bricks at police and attempting to set homes they believed belonged to the families of the accused on fire.
Videos from the scene showed the rioters erecting barricades on the streets and setting them alight as well as smashing windows. One person was arrested on “suspicion of riotous and disorderly behavior,” the police said, according to the Belfast Telegraph. Continue…

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport arrested a Canadian citizen wanted in Washington State for the rape of a child, authorities announced Tuesday.
Michael Yang, 37, was taken into custody upon his arrival from Vancouver, British Columbia. According to officials, Yang was flagged by the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) as having an active warrant out of Mason County, Washington.
The NCIC is a nationwide law enforcement database that allows agencies to share critical information, including active warrants for a broad range of crimes. CBP officers routinely use the system to identify and apprehend individuals wanted for serious offenses such as homicide, sexual abuse, fraud, drug trafficking, and more.
Following his arrest, Yang was transferred to the custody of the Shelton Police Department.
“CBP protects this nation against a variety of threats. At times, that includes bringing those charged with serious sex crimes to justice,” said Brian Humphrey, Director of Field Operations for CBP’s Seattle Field Office. “Arrests such as this take suspected predators off of our streets and bolster the safety of our communities and our nation.”

The RCMP lost a memory key containing the personal details of victims, witnesses, and informants, and later discovered criminals were attempting to sell it, Canada’s privacy watchdog says.
The RCMP reported the breach to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) in March 2022, prompting an extensive investigation, according to a newly released report from Commissioner Philippe Dufresne.
The investigation found the unencrypted USB storage device held the personal data of 1,741 individuals, which included witnesses, complainants, subjects of interest, and informants, as well as police personnel and civilian staff.
“The RCMP’s investigation also established that only some of the documents on the device were password protected and that the device itself was not encrypted nor password protected,” the report reads.
“Information on the device was highly sensitive … and it was found circulating in the criminal community. This creates a higher risk that individuals could be seriously harmed.”
The storage device contained personal information such as names, biographical details, citizenship status, contact information, criminal history, dates and locations of birth and death, employee identification numbers, physical characteristics, and signatures. The Ontario Provincial Police has announced a historic fentanyl seizure following two lengthy investigations that also dismantled a drug ring accused of using the dark web and Canada Post to ship drugs across the country.
Investigators seized “a staggering” 43.5 kilograms of fentanyl equalling approximately 435,000 potentially lethal street-level doses during its investigations, says Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Commissioner Thomas Carrique.
“To put that in perspective, a population of 435,000 would be the fifth-largest urban population centre in the province of Ontario,” Carrique said in a June 10 press conference at OPP General Headquarters in Orillia.
Police also seized more than $2.5 million worth of other drugs destined for shipment across nine provinces and territories, he said. The investigations, dubbed Project Bionic and Project Golden, have resulted in 19 people facing more than 200 charges under the Criminal Code and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Continue…

The federal government frequently failed to follow procurement rules when awarding work to GC Strategies, the company behind the $59.5 million ArriveCan application, the auditor general’s latest report has found.
“Federal organizations are required to monitor the work performed by contractors. However, we noted that federal organizations frequently disregarded government policies in this area,” the June 10 report said.
Auditor General Karen Hogan said in her report that a total of 106 professional services contracts from 31 federal organizations were awarded to the IT staffing firm between 2015 and 2024, valued at $64.5 million. In 33 percent of the contracts, the federal organizations could not show that the contract resources had the experience needed to complete the work.
In 46 percent of GC Strategies contracts examined by the auditor general, there was no evidence that all the services had been delivered before the company received payment from the agencies. As such, the auditor general was unable to conclude whether government officials had contravened the Financial Administration Act.
In one case, a contract file with the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario showed that only one out of three deliverables were received, while evidence was missing for the other two cases. GC Strategies had been contracted to support the development of a data strategy roadmap, and was paid $22,000 for the full contract.
Additionally, the auditor general found that in 58 percent of the non‑competitive contracts examined, the organizations failed to assess whether there would be benefits in calling for bids despite a requirement to do so in most cases. In cases where the organizations gave justifications for this, they cited the need for specialized expertise, managing unexpected workload increases, or filling in for public servants during temporary absences.
