A USAID official and three government contractors pleaded guilty to a decade-long bribery scheme involving over $550 million in contracts, according to the Justice Department.

According to court documents, beginning in 2013, USAID official Roderick Wilson agreed with corporate executive Darryl Britt to receive bribes in exchange for Watson’s influence to award contracts to a small business named Apprio and its subcontractor Vistant.

Watson received more than $1 million in bribes to steer no-bid contracts to Apprio and Vistant.

A race-based government program that allowed ‘socially and economically disadvantaged businesses’ to bid on contracts made this massive scheme possible.

A friend of mine is German Canadian. He was born in Germany, came to Canada at the age of 5, and speaks German fluently today. My own story is similar: I was born in the Netherlands, came to Canada at the age of 7, and speak Dutch fluently.

He and I are friends, but our grandparents were not.

My own grandfather fought against the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940, and spent years in a prisoner-of-war camp in Germany. He returned home in 1945 with severe and permanent psychological damage. My grandmother, along with the entire Dutch population, suffered through five years of brutal German occupation. This included the Hunger Winter of 1944-45, when tens of thousands of people in the Netherlands starved to death.

Does my German Canadian friend owe me something (or anything) in 2025, based on the conduct of his grandparents or homeland?

If ethnic guilt can be transmitted from generation to generation, we face never-ending conflict and strife, to the exclusion of harmony, unity, and friendship. Hence Canada (and any other country, for that matter), would be wise to reject laws and policies that are based on race or ancestry. While the application of the principle “Equal rights for all, special privileges for none” will not by itself create a perfect society, following this principle will create more trust, more justice, and more social cohesion than basing laws on ethnicity or descent.

Another friend of mine has 1/32 aboriginal ancestry, or perhaps 1/64 or 1/128. On the basis of his ancestry, my friend’s son received a special $5,000 grant when attending university; my son did not. I’m truly happy for my friend and his son. Who would not want a friend (or his son) to get an extra $5,000? But it’s not fair. Based on his ethnicity, my friend also has better legal access to hunting and fishing opportunities than I do. I’m really happy for him. And it’s not fair.

Race-based government policies predictably and inevitably produce inter-ethnic animosity, resentment, friction, and conflict. When laws are based on ethnicity or descent, people develop an unhealthy obsession with skin colour, blood lines, and other ancestry-based features—their own and those of their neighbours. This obsession is alive and well in Canada today. Canada’s race-based laws and privileges have been implemented with the good intention of helping the disadvantaged, but this discrimination based on ancestry nonetheless damages harmony, unity, and friendship within society. Today in Canada, legislators, law enforcement, university admissions and awards departments, and school boards carve the people of this country into ethnic categories, and mete out different privileges to each, supposedly to advance “social justice.”

She says it’s concerning to see the virus return but is confident Canada can stop domestic transmission once again through immunization.

Amid anti-public-health measures by the Trump administration in the U.S., Tam says it’s a critical time for Canada to stand up for science and combat disinformation.

She says the COVID-19 pandemic showed that Canada could mount its own response that differed from the U.S. and save lives.

Frances Widdowson made the comments while accepting the George Jonas Freedom Award from the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) during a ceremony on June 12 in Toronto.

The award is named after Hungarian-born Canadian journalist and writer George Jonas (1935-2016). JCCF created the award in his honour in 2018, saying it served to “carry on his legacy and to highlight the impact that one individual can make in defence of a free society.”

Widdowson, a former tenured professor at MRU, was removed from her job in 2021.

The removal came after Widdowson had spoken out against “wokeism” and identity politics on her website and on social media, often clashing online with colleagues.

In its decision, the university alleged that Widdowson had contributed to a “harassing and toxic workplace environment” and that she had violated the school’s code of conduct and personal harassment policy. Continue…

In the video, taken outside of St. Michael the Archangel elementary school in Woodbridge, the driver is seen standing in the door of the bus. He is wearing a short pink skirt and white blouse, pink shoes, and a headband.

The driver is heard saying, “I do this everyday, and I don’t think there is an issue.”

He then gets on the bus and one of the bystanders asks if the driver picks up kids dressed like that. The driver responds, “Yup.”

Another bystander ask the driver why the bus is called the “Lolita Line,” but the driver’s response is not audible.

A longtime B.C. high school teacher has been banned from teaching for a year after admitting to inappropriately touching students and making inappropriate comments about students in his class.

John Peter Rocca had been working in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district when the incidents occurred, according to a resolution agreement signed by Rocca and the B.C. commissioner for teacher regulation.

Rocca was reported to the commissioner by the school district in August 2021 and was accused of inappropriate behaviour toward three students.

One of the students had been in Rocca’s math class for Grades 7, 8, and 9, from 2018–2021.

During one of the Grade 7 math classes, Rocca stopped his instruction to comment about what the student was wearing, and how that student looked. He would also put his hands on that student’s shoulder and waist, according to the agreed statement.

Rocca retired from the school district in May 2021, but has a history of similar behaviour dating back to his time teaching in Langley in 1988. Continue…

Starting this fall, some Alberta residents who want to receive the COVID-19 vaccine will be required to pay the full cost of the vaccine, the government says.

The federal government has been paying for COVID vaccines since 2020, although usually the cost of vaccines is the responsibility of the provinces. In April, the procurement process for the COVID vaccine changed, and Ottawa stopped covering the cost, meaning the provinces are responsible for purchasing doses.

The Alberta government announced on June 13 that the cost will need to be passed along to patients because of wastage in past years. It said about 54 percent, or one million doses, of the COVID vaccines were wasted from 2023–2024, costing an estimated $135 million.

“In previous years, we’ve seen significant vaccine wastage,” said Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services Andriana LaGrange.

“By shifting to a targeted approach and introducing pre-ordering, we aim to better align supply with demand – ensuring we remain fiscally responsible while continuing to protect those at highest risk.”

The government said it “remains committed to ensuring Albertans who are at highest risk due to COVID-19 have access to immunizations.” It said 485,000 doses have been ordered for the 2025–2026 immunization season. Continue…

Canada voted in favour of a UN resolution on June 12 titled “Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations.”

The resolution calls for ending the blockade on the Gaza Strip, opening all border crossings, ensuring that humanitarian aid can reach the civilian population, and the release of all hostages. The vote passed 149 in favour to 12 against, with 19 abstentions.

The United States was one of the countries voting against, calling it a “biased” resolution that “marks yet another failure on the part of the United Nations to condemn Hamas.”

Liberal MPs have said the legislation must be passed before July 1 to bring down federal impediments to interprovincial trade barriers and speed up the process for approving major energy projects.

However, Conservatives called for amendments to the bill to ensure regulatory certainty and transparency about the projects that would be approved. “The Liberals will need to fix Bill C-5 and make it transparent, clear, and certain,” Conservative MP and energy critic Shannon Stubbs said on June 13.

Meanwhile, Bloc MPs raised concerns about the bill, saying it takes away power from the provinces, and that Parliamentary committees were only granted a day and a half to study the bill.

“Witnesses will appear before the committee without there being enough time to propose amendments at the end of the day,” Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet said.

Unanimous consent allows for a motion to be adopted without debate as long as no member objects.

The motion had secured support from MPs across all parties and some senators, and was intended to draw international attention to Lai’s imprisonment by the Chinese regime as world leaders prepare to meet in Canada for the summit from June 15 to 17.

Cheuk Kwan, co-chair of the Toronto Association for Democracy in China, said the motion would have had a significant impact on Lai’s case if it had gone ahead.
