The fixed-wing Canadian aircraft entered the no-fly zone shortly after 11 a.m. on June 15, prompting NORAD’s Canadian region (CANR) to deploy CF-18 Hornet fighter jets to intercept it, the RCMP said in a press release.

CANR implemented final warning protocols following several attempts to capture the pilot’s attention to ensure the plane could land safely under its own power, the RCMP said, noting that the incident was taken “very seriously.”

Const. Lauren Mowbray said those protocols included the jets firing warning flares at the pilot. The plane was then met on the ground by the RCMP and its partners. Mowbray did not say if the pilot will face charges.

Two NOTAMs (Notice to Airmen) of temporary air restrictions over Calgary and Kananaskis were put in place on June 14 at 6 a.m., and will remain in effect until June 17 at 11:59 p.m., police said.

A church is taking legal action against the city of Saguenay, Que., for evicting the Christian congregation from a public rental space on the grounds of adhering to the province’s secularism law.

The Church of Two Shores had leased a public basement rental space from the city since 2024. City officials recently terminated the lease while referencing the Act Respecting the Laicity of the State, Quebec’s secularism law, according to a June 11 news release from the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF), which is providing legal support to the church.

City officials had informed the church in March that the city did not authorize religious activities in its rental spaces in order to comply with the secularism act, and notified the church that it must stop religious activities in the public building or face eviction.

When the church told the city it could not gather as a church without engaging in religious activities, the city decided to terminate the rental agreement.

JCCF, a charity founded in 2010 to defend Canadians’ constitutional freedoms, says it is providing legal support to the Church of Two Shores in order to challenge the decision, whose outcome it says could set a “significant precedent” for religious freedom in Quebec. The group is challenging the city’s interpretation of the law.

Dong, who was the MP for the Toronto riding of Don Valley North at the time, subsequently left the Liberal Party caucus and sued Global for defamation.

Global “recognizes the findings of the Final Report of the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference, including that the classified information reviewed by Justice Marie Josee Hogue corroborates that Mr. Dong did not suggest that the PRC extend the detention” of Kovrig and Spavor, a June 15 statement by the media company says.

Global said it published content based on confidential intelligence sources to report on “matters of significant public interest,” adding that it had explained the allegations were “unproven and subject to different interpretations.”

“Mr. Dong has always denied the accuracy of this intelligence,” Global said.

Dong, who did not seek re-election in April, confirmed in a statement the lawsuit has been settled. “After two long years, finally my family and I can move on,” he said.

Speaking to reporters on June 10, EC President Ursula von der Leyen said the proposed price-cap reduction would be discussed at an upcoming meeting of G7 leaders in Canada.

“My assumption is that we [reduce the price cap] together as the G7,” von der Leyen said. “We started that as G7, it was successful … and I want to continue this measure as G7.”

The prime minister will continue to push the case against tariffs and a defence pact with the European Union.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has raised the prospect of Canada joining Pillar II of the AUKUS pact—the wing of the high-level security agreement focused on sharing advanced military technologies such as quantum capabilities, hypersonic missiles, and artificial intelligence.

“I think that Australia always has a case for maximising our defence and security relationships in what is an uncertain world,” Albanese told reporters in Canada, where he is attending the G7 summit.

“We’re also both Five Eyes countries so there’s a lot of cooperation that occurs already in intelligence,” he said. “What people are looking for is certainty in trusted relationships. Australia and Canada are just such partners.”

Albanese met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to discuss expanding defence ties, including Canada’s proposed purchase of Australian over-the-horizon radar technology.

As U.S. President Donald Trump stepped onto a podium for a photo with Prime Minister Mark Carney and his wife Diana, he wore two lapel pins on the left side of his suit.

The first, a small pin of the American flag. And underneath, paired Canadian and American flags. The pins were also in place during his earlier bilateral meeting with Carney.

Earlier in the day, when Trump and Carney met and took questions from reporters, Trump affected an upbeat mood, praising the relationship that he had built with Carney.

But given the oft-strained relationship between Canada and the United States, and in particular between Trump and former prime minister Justin Trudeau, the lapel pin is perhaps indicative of a warming relationship between the two countries. (Or, perhaps, it is indicative of Trump’s belief that Canada and the U.S. would be better together — literally — as one country.)

Marco Rubio, the U.S. secretary of state, and Scott Bessent, the U.S. secretary of the treasury, were also seen wearing Maple Leaf lapel pins on Monday.
