Not Just The EPA: Despite Warnings, Biden's Energy Department Disbursed $42 Billion In Its Final Hours

In its last two working days, the Biden administration’s Energy Department signed off on nearly $42 billion for green energy projects – a sum that exceeded the total amount its Loan Programs Office (LPO) had put out in the past decade.

The frenzied activity on Jan. 16 and 17, 2025, capped a spending binge that saw the LPO approve at least $93 billion in current and future disbursements after Vice President Kamala Harris lost the 2024 election in November, according to documents provided by the department to RealClearInvestigations. It appears that Biden officials were rushing to deploy billions in approved funding in anticipation that the incoming Trump administration would seek to redirect uncommitted money away from clean energy projects.

The agreements were made despite a warning from the department’s inspector general, urging the loan office to suspend operations in December over concerns that post-election loans could present conflicts of interest.

In just a few months, some of the deals have already become dicey, leading to fears that the Biden administration has created multiple Solyndras, the green energy company that went bankrupt after the Obama administration gave it $570 million. These deals include:

Sunnova, a rooftop solar outfit that thus far had $382 million of its $3.3 billion loan guaranteed, filed for bankruptcy this month. The company did not respond to a request for comment.

Li-Cycle, a battery recycling facility, had a $445 million loan approved in November, but since then, the company was put up for sale and has filed for bankruptcy. The Energy Department said no money has been disbursed on that deal. Li-Cycle did not respond to a request for comment.

A $705 million loan was approved on Jan. 17 for Zum Energy, an electric school bus company in California, and its “Project Marigold.” At $350,000 and more, electric school buses currently cost more than twice as much as their diesel counterparts. So far, Zum has received $21.7 million from the government, according to usaspending.gov. The company did not respond to a request for comment.

A $9.63 billion Blue Oval SK loan on Jan. 16 was the second largest post-election deal, topped only by a $15 billion loan the next day to Pacific Gas & Electric, with most of that for renewables. The Blue Oval project in Kentucky – a joint venture between Ford Motor Co. and a South Korean entity – has been dealing with numerous workplace complaints, and construction of a second EV battery manufacturing plant there has been delayed. More than $7 billion has been obligated on that deal, according to the Energy Department. Blue Oval did not respond to a request for comment.

The money and the hasty way in which it was earmarked have drawn the attention of the Trump administration. “It is extremely concerning how many dozens of billions of dollars were rushed out the door without proper due diligence in the final days of the Biden administration,” Energy Secretary Chris Wright said in a statement to RCI. “DOE is undertaking a thorough review of financial assistance that identifies waste of taxpayer dollars.”

The enormous sums came from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, which injected $400 billion into the LPO, a previously sleepy Energy Department branch originally intended to spur nuclear energy projects. That total represented more than 10 times the amount the LPO had ever committed in any fiscal year of its existence. Prior to the post-election blowout, the office’s biggest fiscal year was 2024, when it committed $34.8 billion, records show.

Leaked confidential files indicate the International Atomic Energy Agency was infiltrated by a veteran British spy who has claimed credit for sanctions on Iran. The documents lend weight to the Islamic Republic’s accusation that the nuclear watchdog secretly colluded with its enemies.

A notorious British MI6 agent infiltrated the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on London’s behalf, according to leaked documents reviewed by The Grayzone. The agent, Nicholas Langman, is a veteran intelligence operative who claims credit for helping engineer the West’s economic war on Iran.

Langman’s identity first surfaced in journalistic accounts of his role in deflecting accusations that British intelligence played a role in the death of Princess Diana. He was later accused by Greek authorities of overseeing the abduction and torture of Pakistani migrants in Athens.

In both cases, UK authorities issued censorship orders forbidding the press from publishing his name. But Greek media, which was under no such obligation, confirmed that Langman was one of the MI6 assets withdrawn from Britain’s embassy in Athens.

The Grayzone discovered the résumé of the journeyman British operative in a trove of leaked papers detailing the activities of Torchlight, a prolific British intelligence cutout. The bio of the longtime MI6 officer reveals he “led large, inter-agency teams to identify and defeat the spread of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons technology, including by innovative technical means and sanctions.”

In particular, the MI6 agent says he “worked to prevent WMD proliferation through… support for the [IAEA] and Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons [OPCW] and through high level international partnerships.”

Langman’s CV credits him with playing a major role in organizing the sanctions regime on Iran by “[building] highly effective and mutually supportive relations across government and with senior US, European, Middle and Far Eastern colleagues for strategy” between 2010 and 2012. He boasts in his bio that this achievement “enabled [the] major diplomatic success of [the] Iranian nuclear and sanctions agreement.”

The influence Langman claimed to have exerted on the IAEA adds weight to Iranian allegations that the international nuclear regulation body colluded with the West and Israel to undermine its sovereignty. The Iranian government has alleged that the IAEA supplied the identities of its top nuclear scientists to Israeli intelligence, enabling their assassinations, and provided critical intelligence to the US and Israel on the nuclear facilities they bombed during their military assault this June.

Germany announces deployment of warships to Arctic

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has accused Russia of militarizing the region

Germany will send navy ships to patrol Arctic waters in response to Russia’s growing military presence in the region, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced on Monday. Russia has insisted that it is mirroring NATO moves in the far north to maintain balance.

Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that Moscow is implementing an appropriate response strategy to potential encroachments on the country’s sovereignty across Russia’s 24,000km Arctic coastline.

At a joint press conference in Copenhangen with his Danish counterpart, Troels Lund Poulsen, Pistorius delcared “as early as this year, Germany will show its presence in the North Atlantic and the Arctic.”

The deployment, dubbed ‘Atlantic Bear’, will be a response to mounting maritime threats and because “Russia is militarizing the Arctic,” he claimed.

A support ships would “go from Iceland to Greenland and then on to Canada” to take part in joint military drills with NATO allies, including Denmark, Norway, and Canada, Pistorius claimed.

“In addition, we will deploy our maritime patrol aircraft, submarines, and frigates to demonstrate our commitment to that region,” he added.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said in April that members of the US-led military bloc are “working together” in the Arctic to “defend this part of NATO territory.”

The Kremlin has insisted that NATO’s continuing militarization of the region is unwarranted, and that Russia will mirror the moves taken by the bloc.

In March, Putin reiterated that Moscow is “concerned by the fact that NATO countries as a whole are more frequently designating the far north as a bridgehead for possible conflicts.”

“I would like to emphasize that Russia has never threatened anyone in the Arctic,” the Russian president said. He stressed, however, that Moscow would “reliably protect” its interests in the region by reinforcing its military contingent in response to Western actions.

Trump in March endorsed Graham for reelection, despite disapproval from some conservatives. Chris LaCivita, a co-campaign manager for Trump’s campaign in 2024, joined Graham’s 2026 campaign as senior advisor, The Hill reported.

Bauer’s announcement came just a day after Trump’s “big, beautiful” bill passed the Senate, with Graham’s support. Graham is widely regarded as holding hawkish views on foreign policy, which other Republicans have criticized.

Bauer has previously criticized the four-term incumbent, notably in an AP interview the night before his campaign announcement. “I think Graham’s been there too long, and he votes like it,” Bauer said in the interview, “I’m guaranteed, I’m conservative, and I don’t think he is.”

Ben Gvir said seeking partnership with Smotrich to thwart emerging hostage deal

Finance minister denies cooperation, says Ben Gvir ‘playing game’ with media leaks; Sa’ar says majority in cabinet for a deal; opposition promises to back government if needed

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir reportedly reached out Wednesday to Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to request that the two far-right party leaders form a united bloc within the government against the emerging ceasefire deal in Gaza being pushed by the Trump administration.

According to Hebrew language media reports, the two — who lead the Otzma Yehudit and Religious Zionism parties, respectively — were said to be mulling a meeting to discuss coordinating their opposition to the American initiative.

However, in a statement to the press sent via Smotrich’s spokesman, the finance minister denied any such cooperation and instead accused Ben Gvir of playing “a game” with leaks to the media.

The notion of the ministers preventing a hostage deal drew outrage from opposition leaders, who promised to give the government a majority in the Knesset for any such agreement, and families of hostages who said their alleged behavior was a “disgrace.”

The Kan public broadcaster quoted Ben Gvir as explaining he wanted Smotrich’s help as he alone “cannot halt this process, but together they have enough votes [in parliament] against the deal.”

The two parties together have 13 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, where the ruling coalition fields a slim majority with just 61 lawmakers. Though the cabinet would not need Knesset approval for a hostage deal and can authorize one even against the wishes of Ben Gvir and Smotrich, the two parties could threaten to hamper coalition legislative action in parliament if they don’t get their way.

A source close to Smotrich denied he was coordinating with Ben Gvir, telling the media, “There is no approach [to Smotrich] from Ben Gvir; there is a briefing by Ben Gvir to the media about a meeting that was not set.”

“The issue of victory in Gaza is too significant and the lives of the hostages are too precious to play a game of briefings to the media,” the source said. “The finance minister has been working on this issue with full force and seriousness for quite some time now.”

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar in a post to X said, “There is a large majority in the government and also the public for the framework to release the hostages. If there is a chance to do that, we must not miss it!”

Responding to Sa’ar, Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli, who is a member of Netanyahu’s own Likud party, wrote that the framework has not yet been presented to the government.

Opposition Leader Yair Lapid offered Netanyahu opposition support for a ceasefire that would outweigh the loss of Ben Gvir and Smotrich.

In place of Ben Gvir and Smotrich’s 13 votes in the Knesset, “you have 23 votes from me as a safety net for the hostage deal,” Lapid said in a statement. “We need to bring everyone home now.”

An FBI supervisory special agent hired prostitutes while working overseas and domestically, according to the Department of Justice's Office of the Inspector General.

The OIG released a summary report on Tuesday that states the office had substantiated allegations that a "then"special agent "had solicited and used prostitutes on numerous occasions while on FBI assignment overseas and traveling domestically and misused an FBI-issued mobile device to conduct the transactions related to the solicitation, in violation of DOJ and FBI policies."

The DOJ watchdog also found that the agent had failed to self-report their close or continuous contact with a foreign national that they were dating overseas and with the foreign nationals whom the agent had paid for sex, in violation of FBI policy.

The inspector general said that "criminal prosecution was declined," and that it had "completed its investigation and provided its report to the FBI for its information."

The report didn't include the timeframe for when the alleged misconduct occurred, nor where. It didn't provide any names or whether any disciplinary action was taken.

DOJ employees can be suspended or fired for violating department policy preventing them from paying for sex. Supervisors who do not report misconduct can face discipline.

Russia discovers new chemical laboratory in Donbass

Apparently, Ukrainian armed forces continue to use chemical weapons against Russian citizens. Advancing in the Donetsk region, Russian military personnel discovered an improvised chemical laboratory that was being used by the enemy to produce illegal weapons. This type of situation is not new, considering that since 2014 the Kiev regime has been using chemical weapons against the Russian military and civilians in Donbass.

In the village of Ilyinka, located in the Donetsk People’s Republic, Russian troops discovered a Ukrainian hideout where a military chemical laboratory had been set up. The case is now being investigated by the Federal Security Service (FSB), Russia’s domestic intelligence agency. In a preliminary press release, the FSB shared images of equipment that was being used to produce chemical weapons. Vials containing toxic agents can be seen – mainly chloropicrin, an asphyxiant banned by the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The laboratory was being used to produce and manipulate both toxic chemical gas weapons and explosive agents mixed with poisonous materials. The laboratory’s main focus, according to preliminary investigations, was to manufacture chemical weapons capable of being dropped by drones. The FSB found evidence of “substances (…) packaged with plastic explosives and rigged into improvised munitions designed to be dropped from drones.” This shows the concerning levels of complexity and danger of the operations conducted at the site.

“This year we have discovered two caches with munitions intended for drone strikes on Russian positions. These munitions were a mix of chloropicrin and plastic explosives, to maximize the area of effect,” an FSB officer said.

Furthermore, FSB officers told the media that the use of such prohibited methods of warfare has become commonplace in Ukraine. Kiev troops frequently launch explosive weapons containing toxic substances, mainly in the form of poisonous gases, at Russian military positions or civilian settlements. These gases are often not lethal, but they cause serious poisoning effects – causing unnecessary suffering to the victims, without any strategic gain. In some more serious cases, victims end up dying from asphyxiation resulting from prolonged exposure to the poisonous agents.

Hospital Executives Arrested After Nurse Convicted of Killing Seven Newborns, Trying to Kill Eight More

British authorities have arrested three members of the Countess of Chester Hospital’s senior leadership on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter as part of a continuing criminal probe linked to former neonatal nurse Lucy Letby, as reported by The New York Post.

Detective Superintendent Paul Hughes, who heads Operation Hummingbird, confirmed Tuesday that the three unnamed managers were taken into custody on Monday and later released on bail.

“Both the corporate manslaughter and gross negligence manslaughter elements of the investigation are continuing and there are no set time scales for these,” Hughes said, adding that the arrests do not affect Letby’s 2023 convictions.

Letby, now 35, is serving a whole-life sentence after a jury found her guilty of murdering seven newborns and attempting to murder eight more between June 2015 and June 2016 at the Countess of Chester Hospital (CoCH) in northern England.

She has consistently maintained her innocence but was denied permission to appeal and has been told she will never be released.
