RFK Jr. names some vaccine critics to key CDC committee after ousting entire panel

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Wednesday named eight new members to a crucial government panel of vaccine advisors after firing the entire group just days earlier.

His picks include some well-known vaccine critics, including Dr. Robert Malone.

The new members will join the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP, which advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The group reviews vaccine data and makes recommendations that determine who is eligible for shots and whether insurers should cover them, among other efforts.

The CDC director has to sign off on those recommendations for them to become official policy.

The eight new advisors will attend ACIP’s planned meeting on June 25 to 27, Kennedy said in a post on X on Wednesday. Seventeen members previously served on ACIP.

It is unclear now how, taken together, the new advisors will affect vaccine policy and availability in the U.S. But public health experts had expected Kennedy could choose members who share his skepticism of immunization.

“We all knew this would happen and it’s a national tragedy and a major threat to children’s health and lives,” Lawrence Gostin, professor of public health law at Georgetown University, said in a post on X.

Kennedy said his picks include “highly credentialed scientists, leading public-health experts, and some of America’s most accomplished physicians.” He said they are committed to evidence-based medicine, gold-standard science, and common sense.”

Malone suggested earlier this year, without evidence, that recent deaths from measles among children were due to medical errors rather than the virus itself. Malone bills himself as having played a key role in the creation of mRNA vaccines, but has become a prominent figure in the anti-vaccine movement.

Dr. Paul Offit, a pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and amember of the FDA’s independent panel of vaccine advisers, called some of the new members “anti-vaccine activists.”

“I think the public is not going to be getting the same quality of advice as we had before the purge,” he told CNBC. “I think the people who were on the committee that just got fired had far greater expertise in the areas that you needed expertise than this group.”

Offit said he expects recommendations from ACIP to be “less informed” with the new members.

HHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment on some

members holding anti-vaccine views.

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he has struck a trade deal with Vietnam.

RFK Jr.'s vaccine advisers raise disproven fears about the preservative thimerosal

An influential committee that shapes U.S. vaccine policy – a flashpoint under the leadership of Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr. – has recommended that adults and children no longer receive flu vaccines containing trace amounts of a preservative that's rarely used anymore.

The discussion of thimerosal, a form of mercury that's sometimes added to vaccines for sterilization, dominated much of Thursday's public meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP. The committee guides the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the vaccine schedule for children and adults.

The two-day meeting at CDC headquarters in Atlanta was unusually high-profile,given Kennedy's recent decision to boot the entire committee of experts a few weeks agoand replace them with hisown hand-picked roster,which included some memberswith a history of making inaccurate claimsabout the safety of vaccines.

While ACIP typically includes 17 voting members, Kennedy's overhauledpanel only included seven of them, following a last-minute decision by one of them to step down.

On Thursday, a majority of the panel voted to reaffirm the existing CDC recommendations that anyone over six months receive the annual flu shot. They also voted 5-2 in favor of a monoclonal antibody shot made by Merck that offers protection against respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, for infants younger than 8 months.

But in three separate votes the committee voted to recommend children, pregnant women and all adults receive single-dose flu immunizations with vaccines that don't have thimerosal.

Theories that the chemical could cause autism in children have long been disproven.Even so, manufacturers voluntarily removed it from childhood vaccines. While it's used in some multi-dose vials in several products, there are no vaccines on the pediatric vaccine schedule that contain thimerosal.

The ACIP votes could effectively ban use of the preservative, despite a preponderance of evidence that it is safe.

Dr. Cody Meissner, a professor of pediatrics at Dartmouth College, was the only ACIP member who voted against those recommendations.

"Of all the issues that ACIP needs to focus on, this is not a big issue," he said."The risk from influenza is so much greater than the non-existent, as far as we know, risk from thimerosal."He added: "There is no scientific evidence that thimerosal has caused a problem."

Meissner's comments came in response to a lengthy presentation on the preservative from Lyn Redwood, a nurse and former president of Children's Health Defense, the anti-vaccine advocacy group that Kennedy founded and led for many years.

"Removing a known neurotoxin from being injected into our most vulnerable population is a good place to start with making America healthy again,"she told the committee.

Much of what Redwood said about thimerosal was undercut by a CDC document that had been originally posted with the meeting materials — and then without explanation removed ahead of the meeting. It detailed peer-reviewed literature showing "no association between prenatal exposure to thimerosal-containing vaccinations and autism spectrum disorder in children."

In response to a question about why the document had been taken down, Dr. Robert Malone, an ACIP member, said his understanding was that it had not been "authorized by the Office of the Secretary."

Members of the committeequestioned the analyses provided by CDC, and wondered whether they were ignoring data on adverse eventsthat showed up in relation to the studies they presented, even after the staff explained they had parsed the data thoroughly.

Prominent medical groups welcomed the recommendations on flu and RSV, but expressed concern about the overall tone of the meeting.

Google has agreed to purchase power from a planned nuclear fusion plant in the 2030s as it seeks to lock in the massive electricity supplies needed for the boom in data centres and artificial intelligence.

The technology group has committed to buying 200 MW of electricity from Commonwealth Fusion Systems’ (CFS) planned power station in Virginia under a multiyear power purchase agreement, the companies said in a statement.

Google has been an investor in CFS since 2021 and also is increasing its investment stake in the Massachusetts-based company, the statement said.

CFS did not provide the exact dollar figure for the Google deal, but said that it was in the multibillions.

The deal for 200 MW of energy – about enough to power 75,000 homes – from CFS’s first commercial Arc plant in Chesterfield County, Virginia, marks the first direct deal between a customer and a fusion energy company, and the largest deal of this scale in terms of energy provided.

The deal accounts for roughly half of the expected energy production from the plant, with an option to purchase more energy from future plants.

In 2023, Microsoft signed a deal with Helion Energy for 50 MW of fusion energy, to be provided through Constellation Energy as the power marketer. That deal included a commitment to start producing by 2028.

CFS, which raised a record $1.8bn (€1.5bn) from investors including Google in 2021, hopes the proposed 400 MW Arc facility will be the first fusion power station to be connected to the grid.

CFS, which is backed by Bill Gates’s technology fund Breakthrough Energy Ventures, is currently building a demonstration plant in Massachusetts which it aims to operate in 2027. It hopes the plant that would supply Google will be ready by the early 2030s.

The company is working to build the Sparc prototype fusion machine at its headquarters in Devens, Massachusetts.

Sparc is a compact, high-field, net fusion energy device that would be the size of existing mid-sized fusion devices, but with a much stronger magnetic field. It is predicted to produce 50-100 MW of fusion power.

Sparc is expected to produce its first plasma in 2026 and net fusion energy shortly after, demonstrating for the first time a commercially relevant design that will produce more power than consumed.

Sparc will pave the way for a first commercially viable Arc fusion power plant, which will generate about 400 MW – enough to power large industrial sites or about 150,000 homes.

“It’s a pretty big signal to the market that fusion’s coming,” CFS co-founder and chief executive Bob Mumgaard said about the Google deal. “It’s desirable, and that people are gonna work together to make it happen,”.

Mumgaard added that this could help mobilise the industry more generally, attracting more buyers for the future technology. “This puts fusion into this category of ‘this is not like someday future stuff.’ This is concrete,” he said.

Michael Terrell, head of advanced energy at Google, said: “By entering into this agreement with CFS, we hope to help prove out and scale a promising pathway toward commercial fusion power.

“We’re excited to make this longer-term bet on a technology with transformative potential to meet the world’s future energy demand, and support CFS in their efforts to reach the scientific and engineering milestones needed to get there.”

This advancement could drastically alter the speed and unpredictability of strategic strikes, challenging current norms in military deterrence and defense systems.

According to a recent study published in SCMP, researchers affiliated with the People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force (PLARF) describe a theoretical framework for launching hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs) from orbit.

These systems, capable of speeds up to Mach 20, could reach targets anywhere on Earth in under 30 minutes, significantly compressing adversaries’ early-warning and reaction capabilities.

Bezos-funded satellite tracking methane emissions loses power in space

MethaneSAT, the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) methane-tracking satellite backed by the Bezos Earth Fund, is lost in space.

Its ground team lost contact with the spacecraft on June 20 but tried to reestablish a connection until it learned in the morning of July 1 that MethaneSAT had lost power altogether.

The team believes that the satellite is likely not recoverable. MethaneSAT collected data on methane emissions that have previously been untrackable in an effort to combat climate change.

Methane is the second largest contributor to global warming after carbon dioxide, with agriculture, fossil fuels and waste decomposition being the largest sources.

In its announcement, the MethaneSAT team said that the spacecraft's observations have given us critical insight about the distribution and volume of methane being released from oil and gas production regions.

Thanks to the satellite, scientists have also developed the capability to "interpret the measurements from space and translate them into volumes of methane released." That knowledge can be used in future missions.

EDF developed the mission, which launched in March 2024, to hold the countries who previously pledged to slash their methane emissions accountable.

It created Google Cloud-powered algorithms to calculate and monitor methane emitted in certain regions with held from Harvard and Smithsonian scientists.

While the satellite itself is gone, the MethaneSAT team vowed to work with other scientists to leverage the algorithms and software developed for the project.

The team will also continue processing the data the satellite had sent back.

James Webb telescope discovers tentacled 'jellyfish' galaxy swimming through deep space

Astronomers have discovered what seems to be a new "jellyfish" galaxy about 12 billion light-years away from Earth using high-resolution imaging from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

The galaxy appears to have tentacle-like trails of gas and stars jutting off from one side, likely making it a jellyfish galaxy — a class of galaxies that drip tendrils of star-forming material as they swim through space.

Though more analysis is needed to confirm whether the newfound galaxy truly falls into this category, all signs so far indicate that it does.

Ian Roberts, an astronomer at Waterloo University, found the unique galaxy while sifting through images taken by JWST. His team's research is available to read on the preprint server arXiv, but has not yet been peer reviewed.

"The fact that an interesting galaxy such as this one could be found in such a cursory way suggested that there would be real value in doing a truly systematic search for these sorts of objects," Roberts told Live Science in an email.

Jellyfish galaxies

Jellyfish galaxies develop their tentacles as they undergo a phenomenon called ram pressure stripping, which happens when a galaxy moves through the dense medium between other closeby galaxies within a galaxy cluster.

This movement eventually pushes some gas and stars out of the roaming galaxy, leaving them to trail behind. These tentacles sometimes trigger a large number of stars to form.

Though astronomers don't believe this kind of pressure stripping to be rare in nearby space, the jellyfish stage is short on the cosmic timescale, so it's unusual to capture these aquatic forms before they disappear, Roberts said.

Farther out in the universe, though, where JWST observed this new jellyfish galaxy, "we really have no idea" how common they are, Roberts said.

Jellyfish galaxies provide a way to study galaxy evolution and star formation. Some galaxies in dense environments form many fewer new stars than others, and understanding the reasons why is fundamental to our understanding of how galaxies change over time.

Stars are also affected by ram pressure stripping. Though a surge of new stars may form in the trail behind a jellyfish galaxy, the loss of gas in the center of the galaxy could prevent formation there, according to Roberts.

While ram pressure stripping is the best explanation for the new observations, there may be other possible reasons that the galaxy looks the way it does, and they can't yet be ruled out.

The jelly's appendages could be an illusion; parts of the image that show the tentacles were taken using a method that creates blurring, introducing some uncertainty, Roberts said.

Next steps

With the limited existing data about jellyfish galaxies, it's not clear to astronomers whether a jellyfish galaxy so far out in space is rare or not.

"We don't know the answer yet, but the more galaxies like this that are discovered the more clues that we get," Roberts said.

The research team is hoping to sharpen their image by gathering data from other telescopes, which would allow them to determine whether or not what they've observed is indeed a jellyfish galaxy.

The second of the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellites and the first instrument for the Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission lifted off at 23:04 CEST on Tuesday, 1 July.

The satellite is now on its way to monitor Earth’s atmosphere from an altitude of 36 000 km. From this geostationary orbit, the missions can provide game-changing data for forecasting severe storms and air pollution over Europe.

Both MTG and Copernicus Sentinel-4 are world-class Earth observation missions developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) with European partners to address scientific and societal challenges.

The MTG-S1 satellite has been designed to generate a completely new type of data product, especially suited to nowcasting rapidly evolving storms, with three-dimensional views of the atmosphere.

Its Infrared Sounder will be the first European hyperspectral sounding instrument in geostationary orbit, allowing it to hover over Europe and provide:

a profile of temperature and moisture at different altitudes over Europe every 30 minutes; and

data on aerosols, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide over Europe and Africa every 60 minutes.

And Copernicus Sentinel-4, which consists of an instrument mounted on the MTG-S1 satellite, will be the first mission to monitor European air quality from geostationary orbit.

Its fixed position over the equator enables it to keep its ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared (UVN) imaging spectrometer focused on Europe and northern Africa. It will measure:

pollution every 60 minutes with a level of detail and precision that will transform how we predict air quality across Europe.

ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Simonetta Cheli, said, “These two groundbreaking missions are set to change the way we forecast both severe weather and the quality of air over Europe.

It is thanks to the outstanding work our teams have done with Eumetsat, the European Commission and dozens of European industry partners, that we are able to now look forward to more accurate and timely ways of predicting storm events and air pollution.”

Acquisition of signal was confirmed at 23:39 CEST, followed by deployment of the satellite’s solar arrays, indicating that the mission now has sufficient power. This is a key point at which the mission teams recognise the success of the launch.

About MTG-S1

The MTG mission already launched one satellite – the MTG-Imager (MTG-I) – so MTG-S will be the second MTG satellite in orbit.

Its Infrared Sounder uses interferometric techniques to capture data on temperature, humidity, wind and trace gases that are used to generate three-dimensional maps of the atmosphere, helping to improve the accuracy of weather forecasting.

The Infrared Sounder will be the first hyperspectral sounding instrument placed in geostationary orbit by a European-led mission.

It will be positioned about 36 000 km above the equator and will maintain its position relative to Earth, following the same area on the planet’s surface as we rotate.

It will provide coverage of Europe and part of northern Africa on a repeat cycle, providing meteorologists with a complete weather picture of the region, complementing data on cloud formation and lightning from MTG-I.

“This mission – and of course everyone involved in the project – have been on an incredible journey,” said James Champion, ESA’s MTG Project Manager.

About Copernicus Sentinel-4

The MTG-S satellite hosts the UVN spectrometer for the Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission. Copernicus is the Earth observation component of the European Union’s Space Programme.

The spectrometer delivers high-resolution data on gases that affect the quality of the air we breathe, including a wide range of atmospheric trace gases and pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulphur dioxide and formaldehyde.

The mission will complement the Sentinel-5 and Sentinel-5P missions, which provide daily observations of Earth from polar orbits.

Sentinel-4 is the European Union contribution to the global constellation of geostationary air quality sensors.

It will work alongside the Korean sensor Gems, observing air pollution over Asia, and NASA sensor Tempo, measuring air pollution over North America.

“Sentinel-4 brings something truly new to the Copernicus family of Sentinel Earth observation satellites, and we at ESA are incredibly proud to have contributed to bringing the mission through development to launch,” said Giorgio Bagnasco, ESA’s Sentinel-4 Project Manager.

The AstroCup mission represents a key step toward giving female astronauts sustainable menstrual health options during long-duration missions to the moon and Mars.

Since Sally Ride's historic space shuttle flight in 1983, when NASA famously asked if 100 tampons would be enough for a week-long mission, managing menstruation in space has been an ongoing challenge.

Currently, most female astronauts use hormonal contraception to suppress menstruation entirely during missions.

While this approach has practical advantages, it's not suitable for everyone and raises health concerns for extremely long missions as we step further out into the solar system.

With ambitious plans for lunar bases and Mars expeditions that could last years or even decades, researchers recognized the urgent need for sustainable alternatives.

An astronaut participating in multiple Artemis missions, for example, could face over a decade of menstrual suppression, while someone involved in the full program from 2025 to 2035 might require nearly 20 years of hormonal treatment.

The AstroCup team, led by Ligia F. Coelho from Cornell University, launched four commercially available menstrual cups aboard the Baltasar rocket during a European competition in October 2022, with two cups flying into space while two remained on the ground as controls. The rocket reached over 3 kilometers altitude during a 9-minute flight that subjected the cups to forces 16 times greater than Earth's gravity.

Before and after the flight, researchers conducted rigorous testing using water and glycerol to evaluate the cups' structural integrity and leak-proof performance.

The space-flown menstrual cups performed flawlessly.

Visual inspections revealed no signs of wear or tear but, more importantly, the cups showed no leakage of either test liquid, maintaining their seal integrity despite experiencing extreme acceleration forces, temperature changes, and pressure variations during flight.

The payload's onboard sensors recorded challenging conditions throughout the journey with temperatures ranging from 32°C to 34°C, humidity dropping to 40%, and atmospheric pressure falling below 70,000 Pascals at peak altitude.

These results, posted to the arXiv preprint server, suggest that menstrual cups could be a viable solution for managing menstruation during space missions.

Unlike disposable tampons or pads, reusable cups would dramatically reduce waste, a critical consideration in space where every gram matters and disposal options are limited.

Beyond practical benefits, this research addresses astronaut autonomy and choice in health care.

While encouraging, the AstroCup experiment was just a first step. The test occurred in Earth's atmosphere and gravity, while the moon has one-sixth Earth's gravity and Mars has one-third.

These different gravitational conditions could affect how menstrual fluid behaves when cups are removed or repositioned.

Future studies must examine how the devices perform across multiple menstrual cycles, including cleaning and storage procedures in the environment of space.

The AstroCup mission proves that testing women's health technologies for space is both feasible and necessary.

With more women joining space programs around the world and missions growing longer, ensuring that female astronauts have safe, effective menstrual management options isn't just a technical challenge, it's a fundamental requirement for the future of human space exploration.

White House works to ground NASA science missions before Congress can act

In another sign that the Trump White House is aggressively moving to slash NASA’s science programs, dozens of mission leaders have been asked to prepare "closeout" plans by the end of next week.

The new directive came from NASA's senior leadership on Monday, which is acting on behalf of the White House Office of Management and Budget. Copies of these memos, which appear to vary a little by department, were reviewed by Ars.

The detailed closeout plans called for must be prepared by as soon as July 9 for some missions, which has left principal investigators scrambling due to the tight deadline and the July 4 holiday weekend.

Projects should prepare their plans assuming closeout direction is given on October 1, 2025, one of the NASA memos states.

Missions in operations—that is to say, spacecraft whizzing around the Solar System conducting science right now—should "assume closeout is complete within 3 months."

The memos are careful to state that the preparation of these closeout plans is for the purposes of a "planning exercise only."

However, multiple scientists familiar with the new directive from NASA's leadership do not believe these closeout plans are merely for planning purposes.

Instead, based on the budget process to date and statements from the White House, they view the memos as an effort by the Trump administration to move forward with canceling as many NASA science missions as possible before Congress passes a budget for the upcoming fiscal year, 2026.

This fiscal year begins on October 1, three months from today.

Science at risk

The Trump White House released its proposed budget for NASA a little more than a month ago, seeking to reduce NASA's budget by about 24 percent, from $24.8 billion this year to $18.8 billion in fiscal year 2026.

Some areas within the budget were hit harder than others, particularly the Science Mission Directorate, which sustained nearly 50 percent in proposed cuts.

The space agency has 124 science missions in development, prime operations, or extended operations.

Effectively, the proposed cuts would cancel 41 of these missions, and another 17 would see their funding zeroed out in the near future.

Nearly half of NASA's science missions would therefore end, and dozens more would receive budget cuts of 20–40 percent.

This includes some high-profile casualties, including NASA's only mission at Jupiter, an effort to explore an asteroid that will fly extremely close to Earth in 2029, two promising missions to Venus, and an effort to return samples from Mars.

"We would be turning off some fabulous missions that are doing extremely well," said Jim Green, a physicist who led NASA's Planetary Science Program for 12 years before his retirement in 2022.

Normally, after the White House proposes a budget for the upcoming fiscal year, it is considered by appropriators in Congress responsible for setting funding levels and publishing a budget.

However, in recent years, Congress has been unable to agree upon a budget and pass it before the beginning of the next fiscal year.

This has led to a "continuing resolution" in which, generally, NASA missions continue to receive funding consistent with budget levels set during the previous fiscal year.

However, multiple sources indicated to Ars that may not happen this year, and the new memos offer an important clue in this regard.

Making missions go dark

The memos were sent to the principal investigators of the missions that the White House budget seeks to cancel.

On one hand, it is prudent to have a plan of action in place should these missions actually be canceled due to a new budget, assuming one is in place by October 1.

It is NASA's job to execute the budget it is given.

But there very likely is a more cynical plan at play here.

The Office of Management and Budget, led by Russ Vought, has been seeking to cut the US government's science portfolio across the board, and it fully expects a continuing resolution to be adopted as Congress almost certainly won't have a budget signed.

The congressional committees have been paralyzed, to some degree, by the Trump administration's full-court press to pass the "One Big Beautiful Bill," which exists outside of the traditional budget process.

Congressional work to set the budget for fiscal year 2026 remains in its early stages, and with summer recesses looming, passage of any bill will almost certainly require many months.

Amid this uncertainty, Vought appears to be moving to shut down as many of these missions as possible.

The PBR is the plan

How will Vought and his office accomplish this? Effectively, they seek to turn the president's budget request into the operating plan for NASA—instead of a continuing resolution—in the absence of a fiscal year 2026 budget.

This has already been communicated to NASA's field center directors. Recently, according to multiple sources, NASA's chief of staff, Brian Hughes, told these center leaders that the president's budget request would soon become their operating plans.

Hughes, who worked on Trump's 2024 campaign, is one of the senior political leaders running NASA in the absence of a confirmed administrator.

(Update: After publication of this article, NASA press secretary Bethany Stevens denied Hughes had said this.

"This is either a misinterpretation or mischaracterization of Brian's words," she said.

"Brian has issued no guidance stating that the PBR will become the operating plan for NASA prior to Congressional authorization of a budget.")

During a typical budget year, NASA officials submit an operating plan to Congress so authorizers and appropriators know what is happening at the agency as part of the budget-making process.

During this give-and-take, appropriators provide feedback; i.e., "continue working on such and such" because it is the intent of Congress to continue funding that activity regardless of the White House's proposed budget.

For example, this process saved NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory from having its operations rapidly curtailed last year.

NASA typically complies with guidance from Congress since it receives its budget from Congress. (Really, you do not want to bite the hand that feeds.)

However, this year's process is not expected to be normal, and there is no legal requirement for NASA (or other federal agencies) to consider congressional feedback on their operating plans.

This year, in fact, the Office of Management and Budget has even stopped NASA from submitting operational plans to Congress.

"This is yet another bad faith move by the administration, which seems hell-bent on attacking science and the future of American innovation," said Rep. George Whitesides (D-Calif.), who previously served as NASA's chief of staff.

"To go around Congress, and the committee of jurisdiction that I sit on, to enact their radical agenda that will make us less safe, less competitive, and less able to respond to threats is not only dangerous, it will cede all ground to our adversaries like China."

Will the last planetary scientist please turn out the lights?

How will this play out?

There are multiple strategies, and some of them are likely to end up in court fights. Philosophically, Vought believes strongly that the president should have more authority to direct federal spending.

And he appears likely to try to force the issue this year. Using tactics such as recission—essentially ordering federal agencies to freeze spending—and impoundment, Vought will seek to implement the priorities in the president's budget request, which his office wrote.

Beginning October 1, without a fiscal year 2026 budget in place, NASA may be directed to start following the closeout plans submitted this month by principal investigators and turning missions off.

That means the lights go out at Jupiter, telescopes stop gathering data across the Solar System, and so on for dozens of missions.

And once those missions are gone, they're almost impossible to bring back—even if Congress were inclined to restore funding months later with a new budget.

"If there’s not much hope to restart a mission, the people who are managing Juno, New Horizons, and other missions are going to be looking for their next job," Green said.

"They’re going to be gone. Within a few months, you won’t be able to get the expertise back. And without the expertise, you don’t have the ability to run the mission safely."

Astronomers capture incredible 1st image of a dead star that exploded twice. How did it happen?

You may only live once, but some stars die twice. Astronomers have now discovered the first visual evidence of such a stellar event, a dead star that underwent a so-called "double-detonation."

This could indicate that some stars could go supernova without reaching the so-called Chandrasekhar limit, the minimum mass that a star needs to go supernova.

Using the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and its Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument, the team zoomed in on the centuries-old remains of supernova SNR 0509-67.5 located 60,000 light-years away in the constellation Dorado.

This investigation revealed structures within this explosive wreckage that indicate its progenitor star exploded not once but twice.

Said star was a white dwarf, the type of stellar remnant that forms when a star with a mass similar to that of the sun runs out of fuel for nuclear fusion.

The types of supernova explosions that white dwarfs undergo, Type Ia supernovas, are important to astronomers because they can be used to measure cosmic distances because their light output is so uniform.

Thus, astronomers often refer to them as "standard candles."

The first visual evidence of a double detonation white dwarf reveals hidden depths to these important stellar events, scientists say.

"The explosions of white dwarfs play a crucial role in astronomy," team leader and University of New South Wales researcher Priyam Das said in a statement.

"Yet, despite their importance, the long-standing puzzle of the exact mechanism triggering their explosion remains unsolved."

You only die twice

Scientists agree that the genesis of Type Ia supernovas is binary systems of two stars in which one becomes a white dwarf.

If this dead star orbits close enough to its living stellar companion, or if that companion swells up, then the white dwarf becomes a stellar vampire, greedily stripping material from its companion or "donor" star.

This continues until the piling up stolen material has added so much mass to the white dwarf that the stellar remnant crosses the so-called Chandrasekhar limit, which is about 1.4 times the mass of the sun.

Hence, this cosmic vampire white dwarf explodes in a Type Ia supernova. It is believed that in most cases, the eruption completely destroys the white dwarf. But for some time, astronomers have suspected there may be more to the story.

Maybe white dwarfs can experience a second explosion. This research confirms that at least some white dwarfs experience double-detonations.

The question is: why?

Theory behind double-detonations suggests that in these cases, as white dwarfs are stripping material from a donor star, they wrap themselves in a blanket of stolen helium. This envelope becomes unstable and eventually ignites, triggering the first detonation.

The initial explosion generates a shockwave that ripples inwards, eventually striking the core of the white dwarf, triggering a second detonation, the actual supernova.

The significance of this to our understanding of Type Ia white dwarf supernovas is that it can occur well before a dead star swells beyond the Chandrasekhar limit.

Recently, scientists determined that this double-detonation process would imprint a distinctive "fingerprint" with supernova wreckage. This should be present long after the supernova ripped its progenitor star apart.

That fingerprint is now visually confirmed as being present in the wreckage of SNR 0509-67.5, supernova wreckage in the Large Magellanic Cloud first detected in 2004 and believed to be around 400 years old as we see it.

Beyond being an important discovery for our scientific understanding of these events and solving a lingering mystery about the evolution of white dwarfs, the observation of SNR 0509-67.5 has provided astronomy lovers with some stunning eye-candy.

"This tangible evidence of a double-detonation not only contributes towards solving a long-standing mystery, but also offers a visual spectacle," Das concluded.

Exoplanets that cling too tightly to their stars trigger their own doom: 'This is a completely new phenomenon'

Some planets take the expression "you're your own worst enemy" to the extreme. At least, that's what astronomers found when they recently discovered a doomed planet clinging to its parent star so tightly that it's triggering explosive outbursts and destroying itself.

The clingy, self-destructive extrasolar planet, or "exoplanet," in question is called HIP 67522 b. It orbits a young, 17 million-year-old star so closely that one of its years lasts just one Earth week.

Considering our middle-aged star, the sun, is 4.6 billion years old, the stellar parent of this clingy exoplanet (called HIP 67522) is a relative infant. This means it is bursting with energy.

Since the mid-1990s, when the first exoplanets were discovered, astronomers have pondered whether exoplanets can orbit their stars closely enough that stellar magnetic fields are impacted.

Over 5,000 exoplanet discoveries later and astronomers still hadn't found the answer.

That is, until now.

"We hadn't seen any systems like HIP 67522 before; when the planet was found, it was the youngest planet known to be orbiting its host star in less than 10 days," team leader and Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON) researcher Ekaterina Ilin said in a statement.

"I have a million questions because this is a completely new phenomenon, so the details are still not clear."

Kid planet triggers stellar parent

The team discovered HIP 67522 while using NASA's exoplanet hunting spacecraft TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) to survey flaring stars.

TESS discovered some interesting characteristics of HIP 67522, prompting a follow-up investigation with the European Space Agency (ESA) mission Cheops (Characterizing Exoplanet Satellite).

"We quickly requested observing time with Cheops, which can target individual stars on demand, ultra precisely," Ilin said.

"With Cheops, we saw more flares, taking the total count to 15, almost all coming in our direction as the planet transited in front of the star as seen from Earth."

Ilin and colleagues discovered that the stellar flares being thrown out by HIP 67522 occur when its clingy planet passes in front of, or "transits," the star.

That means these flares are very likely triggered by the planet itself. The team theorizes this occurs because HIP 67522 b is so close to its star that it exerts a magnetic influence on the star.

As the planet whips around the star, it gathers energy, which is redirected as waves rippling down the star's magnetic field lines. When a wave hits the stellar surface, a massive flare is triggered.

"The planet seems to be triggering particularly energetic flares," Ilin explained. "The waves it sends along the star’s magnetic field lines kick off flares at specific moments. But the energy of the flares is much higher than the energy of the waves.

"We think that the waves are setting off explosions that are waiting to happen."

This is therefore the first hard evidence that planets can influence the behavior of their stars.

HIP 67522 b isn't just triggering flares facing nowhere, though. These induced flares are directed toward the world itself. In particular, it is bombarded with around six times the radiation a planet at this orbital distance usually would experience.

As you might imagine, this bombardment spells doom for HIP 67522 b. The planet is currently around the size of Jupiter, but it has around the density of candy floss.

The planet's wispy outer layers are being stripped away by harsh radiation, causing the planet to lose even the little mass it has.

Over the next 100 million years, HIP 67522 b is expected to drop from the size of Jupiter to around the size of Neptune. The team doesn't actually quite know how extreme the damage these self-inflicted flares could be for HIP 67522 b.

"There are two things that I think are most important to do now.

The first is to follow up in different wavelengths to find out what kind of energy is being released in these flares — for example, ultraviolet and X-rays are especially bad news for the exoplanet," Ilin said.

"The second is to find and study other similar star-planet systems; by moving from a single case to a group of 10 to 100 systems, theoretical astronomers will have something to work with."

An enormous 'X' and 'V' will grace the moon's surface tonight. Here's how to see them

July 2, 2025

The night of the first quarter moon phase on July 2 presents a good opportunity to spot a colossal 'X' and 'V' emblazoned on the lunar surface.

This month's first quarter phase occurs at 11:41 p.m. EDT on July 2 (0341 GMT on July 3), at which time the right side of the half-lit lunar disk will be illuminated by direct sunlight from the perspective of viewers in the northern hemisphere on Earth.

At this time, the sun shines at such an angle to make it appear as if there is a gigantic 'V' and 'X' marking the barren lunar surface.

This kind of phenomenon is referred to as a 'clair-obscur' effect and occurs when the interplay between light and shadow leads to the chance formation of familiar shapes on the moon's craggy terrain.

How to spot the letters 'X' and 'V' marking the lunar surface

The lunar letters are visible for roughly four hours in the run-up to each first quarter moon phase and are at their most impressive when seen just on the 'night' side of the terminator, with their upper reaches kissed by the sun's light.

Try and find the lunar 'X' and 'V' on the lunar disk at sunset on July 2 and be sure to keep checking back to see how these shapes evolve over time.

If you miss the letters on the night side of the terminator, there's no need to lose hope, as they'll continue to be visible for a brief period after they pass to the 'day side' of the moon.

The lunar X is an optical effect formed when sunlight strikes elevated rim sections of the Bianchini, Purbach and La Caille Craters around the first quarter moon phase, according to stargazing website EarthSky.org.

The feature can be found around 25 degrees south of the lunar equator close to the terminator, which is the line separating the dayside and nightside of the moon, close to the prominent Werner and Aliacensis Craters.

To find the lunar 'V', moongazers must follow the line of the terminator up to a point less than 10 degrees above the lunar equator to find the partially shadowed form of the Ukert Crater.

Both objects can be spotted through a small backyard telescope with a 6-inch aperture, though a larger scope will help resolve detail in the myriad craters and broken terrain dotting the surrounding moonscapes.

Report: Israeli soldiers say they are ordered to shoot at unarmed Gazans seeking aid

Since May 27, there have been at least 19 IDF shooting incidents related to humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza.

As the death toll of Gazans around aid distribution sites continues to rise, some Israeli soldiers and officers told the newspaper Haaretz that they are ordered to indiscriminately shoot at people seeking aid as a method of dispersal.

According to the report, the Israeli Military Advocate General instructed the IDF General Staff’s Fact-Finding Assessment Mechanism, which investigates potential misconduct, to investigate suspected war crimes at the aid distribution sites during a closed-door meeting.

In a statement shared with the Times of Israel, the IDF confirmed the General Staff Fact-Finding Assessment Mechanism was probing the matter but denied that troops had been ordered by commanders to deliberately open fire on Palestinian aid seekers.

“We strongly reject the accusation raised in the article. The IDF did not instruct the forces to deliberately shoot at civilians, including those approaching the distribution centers. To be clear, IDF directives prohibit deliberate attacks on civilians,” the IDF said.

The controversy is the latest to embroil the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a joint U.S-Israeli mechanism to deliver aid in Gaza and bypass Hamas, which began working late last month. Since May 27, there have been at least 19 IDF shooting incidents related to humanitarian aid distribution.

The new report in the left-leaning newspaper included testimonies from several anonymous IDF soldiers and officers who described a daily operation that opened fire on civilians seeking aid despite them posing no threat.

“It’s a killing field,” one soldier told Haaretz. “Where I was stationed, between one and five people were killed every day. They’re treated like a hostile force — no crowd-control measures, no tear gas — just live fire with everything imaginable: heavy machine guns, grenade launchers, mortars. Then, once the center opens, the shooting stops, and they know they can approach. Our form of communication is gunfire.”

Thousands of Gazans come to GHF’s four aid distribution sites daily as one of the only lifelines for food in the area, but the sites are only open for one hour each morning, and soldiers routinely fire into the crowds before and after they open to disperse them, according to Haaretz.

“We open fire early in the morning if someone tries to get in line from a few hundred meters away, and sometimes we just charge at them from close range. But there’s no danger to the forces,” the anonymous soldier said. “I’m not aware of a single instance of return fire. There’s no enemy, no weapons.”

One anonymous senior officer familiar with the fighting in Gaza told Haaretz that the indiscriminate firing of civilians went against “everything the army is supposed to stand for.”

“The fact that live fire is directed at a civilian population — whether with artillery, tanks, snipers or drones — goes against everything the army is supposed to stand for,” the senior officer said. “Why are people collecting food being killed just because they stepped out of line, or because some commander doesn’t like that they’re cutting in? Why have we reached a point where a teenager is willing to risk his life just to pull a sack of rice off a truck? And that’s who we’re firing artillery at?”

During the meeting of the Israeli Military Advocate General and the IDF General Staff’s Fact-Finding Assessment Mechanism, senior officers in the IDF asserted that the incidents were isolated and that fire was directed at individuals who posed a threat to troops, but representatives of the Advocate General’s Office rejected the IDF’s claims, according to Haaretz.

“The claim that these are isolated cases doesn’t align with incidents in which grenades were dropped from the air and mortars and artillery were fired at civilians,” said one legal official. “This isn’t about a few people being killed — we’re talking about dozens of casualties every day.”

An IDF spokesperson responded to the claims, telling Haaretz that Hamas was the primary hindrance to the successful distribution of aid and that “in depth investigations” were conducted over reports of harm to civilians at distribution centers.

“Hamas is a brutal terrorist organization that starves the Gazan population and endangers them to maintain its rule in the Gaza Strip. Hamas does everything in its power to prevent the successful distribution of food in Gaza and to disrupt humanitarian aid,” the spokesperson said.

“The IDF allows the American civil society organization (GHF) to operate independently and distribute aid to Gaza residents. The IDF operates near the new distribution areas to enable distribution while continuing operational activities in the Strip,” according to the IDF spokesperson.

“As part of their operational conduct in the vicinity of the main access roads to the distribution centers, IDF forces are conducting systematic learning processes to improve their operational response in the area and minimize, as much as possible, potential friction between the population and IDF forces. Recently, forces worked to reorganize the area by placing new fences, signage, opening additional routes, and more. Following incidents where there were reports of harm to civilians arriving at distribution centers, in-depth investigations were conducted, and instructions were given to forces on the ground based on lessons learned. These incidents were referred for examination by the General Staff’s debriefing mechanism,” the spokesperson continued.

On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stopped aid from entering northern Gaza for 48 hours amid claims that Hamas had been stealing aid intended for civilians.

In a statement following the publication of the Haaretz report, Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz rejected the claims made in the article, referring to it as “blood libel” in a statement.

“The State of Israel absolutely rejects the contemptible blood libels that have been published in the Ha’aretz newspaper, according to which ‘IDF Soldiers Ordered to Shoot Deliberately at Unarmed Gazans Waiting for Humanitarian Aid.’ These are malicious falsehoods designed to defame the IDF, the most moral military in the world,” the statement read.

“The IDF operates in difficult conditions against a terrorist enemy that operates out of a civilian population and hides behind it, using it as human shields, and uses a complete industry of lies to harm the legitimacy of the State of Israel,” the statement continued. “The soldiers of the IDF receive clear orders to avoid harming innocents – and operate accordingly.”

According to a report released Thursday by the British charity Save the Children, based on reporting from the Gaza Media Office and the U.N., children were among the casualties in ten of the 19 aid site shooting incidents.

Senate Passes Reconciliation Bill with Billions for Air Force and Space Force

The Senate passed Republicans’ sweeping tax-and-spending package July 1 in a 51-50 vote, the culmination of a 27-hour marathon legislative session.

The package—often called the reconciliation bill—includes a $150 billion package of defense funds that accounts for a significant portion of the money the Air Force and Space Force want for their top priorities next year.

The bill now returns to the House of Representatives for further consideration.

“The Senate-passed reconciliation bill is an investment in the future of the United States,” Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) said on social media after the vote.

“Through this legislation, the Senate secured a down payment on a generational upgrade for our nation’s defense capabilities.”

The bill is essentially must-pass legislation for the Department of the Air Force, which stands to lose tens of billions of dollars from its annual budget if the measure fails to become law.

Nearly $39 billion—or 15.5 percent—of the $250 billion the Air Force and Space Force seek in 2026 would come from the reconciliation bill.

While the defense provisions in the bill aren’t controversial, their fate is tied to the outcome of the more divisive overall package, which includes cuts to social safety net programs like Medicaid and trillions of dollars for tax breaks, immigration enforcement, and more.

If the legislation isn’t enacted, the services would face a budget cut of almost 1 percent compared to the previous year. That possibility would be a “massive blow to our plan,” Air Force Secretary Troy E. Meink told the Senate defense appropriations subcommittee last week.

“It’s highly risky, because there is no guarantee that there’ll be another reconciliation bill,” Todd Harrison, a defense budget analyst at the American Enterprise Institute, told Air & Space Forces Magazine.

“The fact that the Air Force and Space Force did not do well in their base budgets is a troubling sign.”

The Space Force would be hit particularly hard. More than one-third of its $40 billion spending proposal would be funded through the reconciliation bill, putting the service in a precarious position as it watches the legislation’s progress.

Nearly half of the Space Force’s $29 billion research, development, test, and evaluation request depends on the reconciliation bill—a massive gamble for the service as it tries to take on more missions in its sixth year.

Some of that is comprised of the Trump administration’s attempt to secure a $25 billion “down payment” for its Golden Dome missile defense system that would heavily rely on Space Force assets to protect the U.S. from attack.

The Space Force’s spending plan indicates it “lost big” to the other services as Pentagon leaders crafted the 2026 base budget request, Harrison said, despite the military’s growing reliance on space for directing precision-guided weapons, surveillance, and communications.

“That money is going to go away,” he said of the boost through reconciliation. “What are they left with?” Twelve percent of next year’s Air Force budget relies on reconciliation dollars as well.

While the money can give programs like the B-21 stealth bomber a temporary bump, Harrison believes it won’t accomplish much in the long run.

Reconciliation is one piece of the Trump administration’s $1 trillion defense spending request for 2026, which it has split between the one-time megabill and the regular annual appropriations process in the hope of making it more likely to succeed.

“I don’t fully understand all of the mechanisms, but I think the first principle is … a sustained topline to be able to continue our modernization and maintain readiness is going to be key, however that happens,” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David W. Allvin said of the two-track approach at the June 26 Senate defense appropriations hearing.

Gen. B. Chance Saltzman, the Space Force’s top officer, added that the service is still sorting through how the mandatory spending included in the reconciliation bill will affect its overall budget.

If the services get all the money they’ve asked for across both avenues, the Air Force would sit $25.5 billion, or 14 percent, higher than in 2025.

The Space Force would receive $11.3 billion, or 40 percent, more than in the previous year.

The “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” as the reconciliation package is called, offers billions of dollars for defense initiatives such as speeding production of new aircraft, bolstering nuclear missile development, and supporting military families.

The Senate bill recently added $600 million to develop and acquire unspecified long-range strike aircraft for the Air Force, as well as $1 billion for the X-37B spaceplane and $3.7 billion to develop and defend military satellites, among other updates.

The legislation uses a maneuver known as budget reconciliation that allows the Senate’s Republican majority to pass the package of President Trump’s policy priorities without Democratic votes.

The bill earned the go-ahead around noon July 1, more than a full day after a long-running series of votes on amendments—called a “vote-a-rama”—kicked off shortly after 9 a.m. June 30.

Republican Sens. Thom Tillis (N.C.), Rand Paul (Ky.), and Susan Collins (Maine) sided with Democrats in voting against the bill, forcing GOP leadership to assuage Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s concerns in exchange for a yes vote.

Vice President J.D. Vance then cast the tiebreaking vote.

GOP leaders have said they hope to pass the bill by July 4, a self-imposed deadline.

Among the amendments offered, Republicans blocked a motion from Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) to prohibit the bill’s defense funding from being used to retrofit the former Qatari royal jetliner to serve as a temporary Air Force One.

Another measure from Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), which would limit the ability of federal agencies to fire more than 1 percent of their employees if any military veterans lose their jobs as a result, failed in a party-line vote.

Wicker, the Senate Armed Services Committee chairman, pushed back on Blumenthal’s amendment, noting that the bill doesn’t offer money for presidential aircraft.

Defense Department nominees vetted by the committee have pledged to use the reconciliation funds as directed, he added, making an amendment that would stop funds from being shifted to an interim Air Force One obsolete.

An amendment from Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), to prohibit the use of Defense Production Act funds without congressional approval, failed 42-58.

The Defense Production Act allows the president to mobilize domestic industries in support of national defense, including boosting production capacity at American factories, forcing companies to prioritize federal contracts, and entering into new public-private partnerships.

The law was a key tool in the federal battle to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, invoked to increase production of N95 masks and COVID-19 vaccines.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act faces headwinds as it returns to the House, where lawmakers will have to hash out concerns about the Senate’s changes to the cap on state and local tax deductions and Medicaid reform, among others.

The bill narrowly escaped defeat in the House with a 215-214 vote in May.

“This has been an awful process—a frantic rush to meet an artificial deadline that has tested every limit of this institution,” Murkowski said in a statement.

“My sincere hope is that this is not the final product. This bill needs more work across chambers and is not ready for the President’s desk. We need to work together to get this right.”
