Socratic method can be effective with the inquisitive mind, but overall, most people like to believe that they learned something all by themselves, so you can't really tell them anything (in my experience, at least)…power of the ego, or somesuch.
Personally, I've learned to just watch the hamster wheels turn and then ask a pointed question at an opportune moment. FWIW.
