Illinois has one of the nation’s worst problems with child sex abuse at juvenile detention centers, attorneys representing more than 900 survivors who have filed lawsuits said Wednesday.

 

Dozens of complaints, including several filed this week in Chicago, allege decades of systemic abuse of children by the employees of detention facilities. Similar lawsuits have popped up in states including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, but Illinois stands out for the volume of cases that began piling up last year and the lackluster response from state leaders, according to attorneys.

 

“The scale and the magnitude and the severity of these cases are some of the worst we’ve seen all over the United States,” Jerome Block, an attorney who has filed lawsuits nationwide, said at a news conference.

 

The latest Illinois complaints, filed Tuesday, represent 107 people who experienced abuse as children at 10 centers statewide. Some have since closed. The lawsuits allege abuse from the mid-1990s to 2018, including rape, forced masturbation and beatings by chaplains, counselors, officers and kitchen supervisors.

 

The Associated Press does not typically name people who say they were sexually assaulted unless they consent to being identified or decide to tell their stories publicly, as some who have filed lawsuits have done. Most plaintiffs are identified by initials in the lawsuits.

 

Survivor Kate-Lynn, who appeared at a Chicago news conference, said she only felt comfortable speaking publicly using her first name. The Illinois woman, now 26, said she was held in solitary confinement at a suburban Chicago facility for a year when she was 14. She said she was sexually and physically abused by at least five staff members who came into her cell and stripped her naked.

 

As she spoke, a fellow survivor who also planned to speak became overcome with emotion and left the room. He didn't return.

 

Kate-Lynn said she has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety.

 

“Going to public places is very hard for me,” she said, wiping tears at times. “I feel like I 'm going to be attacked when dealing with authority figures."

 

The lawsuits, first filed in May 2024, and they are slowly making their way through the courts.

 

Two lawsuits against the state — representing 83 people — were filed in the Illinois Court of Claims and seek damages of roughly $2 million per plaintiff, the most allowed under law. Separate lawsuits representing 24 people held as children at a Chicago center, were filed in Cook County and seek more than $100,000 per plaintiff.

 

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, who represents the state, has tried to dismiss the cases in court.

Treasury Department Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday said the process to pick a new chair of the Federal Reserve has started, ahead of Chair Jerome Powell’s term ending in 2026 and amid growing pressure from the White House for him to step aside early.

 

“There’s a formal process that’s already starting,” Bessent told Bloomberg Television, referring to the steps to identify a nominee for Fed chair.

 

He added, “There are a lot of good candidates inside and outside the Federal Reserve.”

 

The secretary said he is part of the decisionmaking process when asked whether President Trump has asked him to serve as Fed chair.

 

“It’s President Trump’s decision, and it will move at his speed,” Bessent said.

 

Bessent, who has cemented himself as Trump’s chief dealmaker and Wall Street ambassador throughout the implementation of the tariff plan, is considered a possible replacement for Powell. There is no law preventing the Treasury Department secretary from also serving as chair of the Fed, experts say, but a dual role would fly in the face of the doctrine of central bank independence.

 

While Powell’s chair term is up in May 2026, his term as a Fed governor is up in 2028. Bessent on Tuesday suggested Powell should also leave the board when his leadership term is done.

 

“Traditionally, the Fed chair also steps down as a governor,” Bessent told Bloomberg. “There’s been a lot of talk of a shadow Fed chair causing confusion in advance of his or her nomination. And I can tell you, I think it’d be very confusing for the market for a former Fed chair to stay on also.”

 

Trump has urged Powell to resign, following Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte calling for Congress to investigate him over past comments to lawmakers. The White House budget chief Russell Vought last week also accused Powell of mismanaging the central bank’s budget during renovations.

 

Trump has repeatedly bashed Powell, calling him names such as “Too Late” and “numbskull,” and he has been publicly critical of the central bank’s decision to hold interest rates steady even as inflation has cooled slightly.

 

The Fed chair has defended not reducing rates as the central bank waits to see how the president’s whipsaw trade policies and tax cut plans affect a sturdy U.S. economy.

According to CENTCOM, the operation resulted in the interception of over 750 tons of munitions and military hardware that were reportedly bound for the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. The massive cache included hundreds of advanced cruise, anti-ship, and anti-aircraft missiles, along with warheads, seekers, and components.

 

The seizure also contained hundreds of drone engines, air defense equipment, radar systems, and communications equipment. The NRF reported finding manuals written in Farsi accompanying the weapons, many of which were manufactured by a company affiliated with the Iranian Ministry of Defense that is currently under U.S. sanctions.

 

General Michael Erik Kurilla, commander of CENTCOM, praised the operation, stating: “We commend the legitimate government forces of Yemen who continue to interdict the flow of Iranian munitions bound for the Houthis. The interdiction of this massive Iranian shipment shows that Iran remains the most destabilizing actor in the region.”

 

CENTCOM officials said that the NRF’s actions support United Nations Security Council resolutions and demonstrate “their commitment to a safe Yemen, Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.” General Kurilla further noted that “limiting the free flow of Iranian support to the Houthis is critical to regional security, stability, and freedom of navigation.”

Trump’s Shipbuilding Push Falters as NSC Maritime Office Gutted

WASHINGTON, July 15 (Reuters) – Two senior officials at the White House National Security Council have left their roles in recent days, according to two sources familiar with the moves, the latest departures for a body that has been cut sharply in recent months.

 

Ian Bennitt, the senior director for maritime and industrial capacity, and Brian McCormack, the NSC’s chief of staff, both departed last week, said the sources, who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive personnel moves.

 

Bennitt is expected to leave for the private sector, the sources said, while McCormack is slated to become chief of staff for Republican Senator Bill Hagerty, a Trump ally.

 

Hagerty’s office had already said last week that McCormack would soon take up the chief of staff role for the senator, indicating his departure from the NSC was imminent. Bennitt’s departure has not been previously reported.

 

While it was not clear what immediate impact the moves would have on national security policy, the departures follow multiple waves of firings that have at times dented morale and left the NSC a shell of its former self.

 

Some sections of the NSC have been eliminated, while others – such as those overseeing the Middle East and Africa – have been combined, according to several people familiar with the moves.

 

Very few senior officials at the NSC who were hired at the beginning of President Donald Trump’s administration remain. McCormack and Bennitt were among the last holdouts.

 

Bennitt’s departure is particularly significant given the Trump administration’s early focus on revitalizing the U.S. Navy and rebuilding the country’s maritime capacity.

 

Trump signed an executive order to bipartisan applause in April aimed at reviving domestic shipbuilding and reducing China’s grip on the global shipping industry. The White House had pointed to the establishment of a maritime office at the NSC as a sign of its commitment to the industry.

 

But by early July, five of that office’s seven workers had departed, the Wall Street Journal reported.

 

A White House official told Reuters there was now a greater emphasis on maritime affairs at the State Department and at the Office of Management and Budget, a separate White House agency that helps decide the president’s policy priorities and how to pay for them.

 

Anna Kelly, a White House spokesperson, did not directly comment on the departures, but indicated the administration is still focused on shipbuilding.

 

“American shipbuilding was neglected for decades under failed presidents like Joe Biden, but President Trump is prioritizing this vital industry to strengthen our country’s economic and national security,” she said in a statement.

 

The tumult at the NSC began in late March and early April, when several staffers were let go after right-wing influencer Laura Loomer presented Trump with a list of national security officials she perceived to be disloyal.Trump’s first national security adviser, Mike Waltz, was ousted in May. His standing was diminished after he accidentally added a journalist to a group chat about an imminent bombing campaign in Yemen.

 

After a slow bleed of firings throughout the spring, the NSC was decimated by a mass purge of employees of various ranks in late May. Upon taking office in January, the Trump administration dismissed almost all NSC holdovers from the administration of former President Joe Biden, meaning the subsequent purges targeted people the White House itself hired.

 

The NSC, which plays a central role in formulating and coordinating national security policy in some administrations, has now taken a back seat to the Pentagon, the State Department and the intelligence community, according to several U.S. officials.

 

In recent weeks, the NSC has begun to make some hires in an attempt to rebuild, according to the sources. But senior departures could complicate the administration’s ability to refill ranks promptly.

 

The voluntary departure of some additional NSC staffers is expected in the coming days and weeks, the two sources said.

PBS and NPR receive hundreds of millions from the federal government, much of it through the CPB, “the largest single source of funding for public radio [and] television.” The CPB is a nonprofit created by Congress to provide funding for programming for the public. The three are so intertwined that they are sometimes mistaken for the same entity.

The president has the authority to appoint (with the Senate’s confirmation) and remove members of the CPB board, and so he did. Trent Morse, the deputy director of presidential personnel for the executive office of the president, sent an April 28 email informing Laura G. Ross, Thomas E. Rothman, and Diane Kaplan that the president was removing them, effective immediately.

The fired board members then did what any good leftists would do: rushed (April 29) to court (CPB v. Trump), demanding that the Trump administration be prevented “from taking any steps to implement or give effect to” the “purported removal,” court papers say.

But the court sided with Trump, saying, “the President (as the appointing person) was authorized to remove the three directors at the time he acted.”

In response, Ross, Rothman, and Kaplan put out a press release doing what public broadcasters do best: completely mischaracterizing reality. In a June 8 press release titled, “Court Recognizes CPB’s Independence; Board Members Remain,” the CPB makes no mention that the judge denied their request.

“The three individuals whom the President purported to remove, Laura G. Ross, Thomas E. Rothman, and Diane Kaplan, are, remain, and shall continue to be directors of the Board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting,” the release said.

And the tacky trio have stuck in their former roles since then, attending board meetings, voting on issues, and drawing pay, according to a complaint filed by the U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday.

They even purportedly voted to amend the bylaws, saying no “Director may be removed from the Board by any person or authority, including the President of the United States, without a two-thirds vote of the other Directors confirming such removal.”

This defies common sense. The CPB just argued in court that the president has no authority to fire them but, by changing the bylaws, admits that he does. Moreover the former CPB board members were removed in April and were no longer authorized to make board decisions on May 15 when they voted to change the bylaws.

The Trump administration’s complaint asks the court to have the former board members “ousted and excluded” from the office of board members of the CPB; declare any actions they took after they were canned “null and void”; and order them to refund to the United States any compensation they have received after April 28.

US Has Launched Over 50 Airstrikes In Somalia In 2025 But Virtually No MSM Coverage

 

US Africa Command has announced that it launched two separate airstrikes in Somalia on Sunday, as the Trump administration is continuing to bomb the country at a record pace, an air war that is receiving virtually no coverage in US media.

 

AFRICOM said that the strikes targeted the ISIS affiliate in Somalia’s northeastern Puntland region, to the southeast of the port city of Bossaso. The command offered no further details, as it has stopped sharing estimates of casualties or assessments of potential civilian harm.

 

AFRICOM confirmed to Antiwar.com in an email that the latest attack marked the 51st US airstrike in Somalia of the year, putting the Trump administration on track to easily break the annual record, which President Trump set at 63 in 2019. Antiwar.com is also seeking details on casualties from AFRICOM, but so far hasn’t received a figure.

 

The US has been backing local Puntland forces against ISIS in battles in the Cal Miskaad mountains in Puntland’s Bari region. Puntland Counter-Terrorism Operations announced on Sunday — the day the US launched two airstrikes — that it was conducting a “clearance operation” against ISIS remnants in the mountains and said the area being targeted was “last used by terrorists as a hideout with their foreign women and children.”

 

Puntland’s forces announced a new military operation on June 30 against ISIS-affiliated militants, and since then, the US has launched at least four airstrikes in the area. The ISIS affiliate in Somalia started in 2015 as an offshoot of al-Shabaab, a group the US has also been bombing in southern and central Somalia.

 

In the war against al-Shabaab, the US is backing the Mogadishu-based Federal Government, which controls little territory inside Somalia’s internationally recognized borders. Somali media reported on Tuesday that government forces killed 15 al-Shabaab fighters in the central Hiraan region, an operation that was supported by “international partners,” likely a reference to US AFRICOM.

Not to be a buzz-kill, but we need you healthy so please try to make sure you eat and drink stuff with calories in the shortest window of time you can tolerate.

I'm a researchfag who sits a lot and stares at a monitor.

All through my life I've never been a big eater.

But then I started working late into the night, and started drinking caloric drinks like coffee with half-and-half, energy drinks, soda, etc.

The weight came on.

The problem wasn't what I was eating and drinking but when. Turns out by never giving things a rest I became insulin-resistant and my metabolism went to hell.

So in January of this year, without telling anyone in my life, I made one switch: I limited eating and drinking stuff with calories to a four-hour window going from about 1000 hours to 1400 hours each day.

That's it.

That's the only change.

Eat like a dog.

Once a day.

So far I've lost 40 pounds just by shutting my pie hole.

I'll be back at my high school weight soon, and by the time I wrap up some work I'm doing, and start going out again, nobody will ever know I went through a "fat phase" 'cause I got rid of it by being careful with the timing.

So yeah, go get you that popcorn.

Just be careful of when you eat it, lol.

International Buyers Purchased $56 Billion Worth Of US Homes In 1 Year

 

Foreign buyers purchased $56 billion worth of existing homes in the United States between April 2024 and March 2025, up by 33.2 percent from the previous 12 months, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) said in a July 14 statement.

 

In terms of the number of properties, they bought 78,100 units, a 44 percent increase from the prior year. This was also the first annual increase since 2017. The average purchase price was $494,400, a “record high,” NAR said.

 

“International interest in buying U.S. real estate increased following the global economic recovery from several years of pandemic-related disruptions,” NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun said in a statement.

 

“However, elevated home prices and interest rates continue to dampen overall potential sales activity and remain well below pre-pandemic levels.”

 

China was the top buyer nation of U.S. existing homes, making up 15 percent of all foreign purchases. Canada was a close second at 14 percent, followed by Mexico at 8 percent, India at 6 percent, and the United Kingdom at 4 percent.

 

The top housing market for international buyers was Florida, which accounted for 21 percent of all such deals. This was followed by California (15 percent), Texas (10 percent), New York (7 percent), and Arizona (5 percent).

 

“To some degree, due to stubbornly high mortgage rates, a greater share of international home buyers paid cash—47 percent compared to 28 percent among all buyers—and they were more likely to purchase homes priced in the upper end of the market,” Yun said.

 

“Foreign buyers are drawn to investing in American real estate, in part, by our country’s strong protection of private property rights.”

 

Among all foreign purchases, 56 percent were made by foreigners who live in the United States as recent immigrants or who have visas allowing them to reside in the country.

 

Interest in U.S. home purchases by Canadians dropped this year amid trade tensions, according to a July 4 statement from real estate brokerage Redfin.

Maurene Comey, who is the daughter of the former F.B.I. director James Comey, worked on the criminal cases against Jeffrey Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

Maurene Comey, a Manhattan federal prosecutor who worked on the criminal cases against Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, was abruptly fired on Wednesday by the Trump administration, according to six people with knowledge of the matter.

Though the reason for Ms. Comey’s firing was not immediately clear, her dismissal immediately raised questions, given her involvement in the Epstein-related cases that have roiled the White House in recent days.

Ms. Comey was informed of her firing in a letter that cited Article II of the Constitution, which describes the powers of the president, according to two of the people.

Ms Comey is also the daughter of the former F.B.I. director James Comey, an adversary of President Trump who has recently been under scrutiny by federal law enforcement authorities.

A spokesman for the Southern District of New York declined to comment on Ms. Comey’s firing. The White House press office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, including about whether it had asked the Justice Department to fire Ms. Comey. Ms. Comey could not immediately be reached for comment.

For more than a week, Mr. Trump and his attorney general, Pam Bondi, have been seeking to quell outrage from many of the president’s supporters over the administration’s reluctance to release files related to Mr. Epstein’s sex-trafficking case.

Mr. Epstein, a disgraced financier, hanged himself in jail in 2019 before he could go to trial and his case has remained an object of fascination, particularly among Mr. Trump’s supporters, who have long called for the release of any and all related information.

Since a memo was released by the Justice Department earlier this month affirming that no list of Mr. Epstein’s clients existed and that he had in fact killed himself, the issue has sowed significant dissent and infighting among Mr. Trump’s base.

In recent days, Mr. Trump has claimed without evidence that files related to Mr. Epstein’s crimes were concocted by Mr. Comey, as well as by former Presidents Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Barack Obama.

He has also hit back at critics, including his own supporters, who have assailed the administration for refusing to release Epstein-related files.

“I don’t understand why they would be so interested,” Mr. Trump said to reporters on Tuesday. “He’s dead for a long time. He was never a big factor in terms of life. I don’t understand what the interest or what the fascination is, I really don’t.”

There was no explicit indication that Ms. Comey’s firing was related to her work on the cases against Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell, who was convicted in 2021 for her role in a yearslong scheme to sexually exploit underage girls.

But as recently as Tuesday, Ms. Comey’s role in their cases was highlighted in a Politico article, which noted that she had argued against the disclosure of investigative records.

It stands to reason that Ms. Comey, as one of the lead prosecutors in Mr. Epstein’s case, would have asked that certain information remain private, as is standard in sensitive cases involving victims of sexual violence. The Justice Department could move to unseal those files, if it chose.

But the firing raises the possibility that Ms. Comey is being set up as a scapegoat as the administration fights to move past the scandal.

The abrupt firing of a prosecutor — especially a veteran like Ms. Comey — was once unusual. But such episodes have become more common as President Trump has taken close control of the Justice Department.

Still, Ms. Comey’s dismissal is the most high-profile departure from her office since February, when the Trump administration moved to abandon corruption charges against Mayor Eric Adams of New York. That decision led to the resignation of at least eight prosecutors in New York and Washington, including Danielle R. Sassoon, then the interim U.S. attorney in Manhattan.

Ms. Comey was also a prosecutor in the trial of Sean Combs, the hip-hop mogul known as Diddy, who was acquitted of the most serious charges against him earlier this month.

She told several close colleagues about her firing in an impromptu meeting on Wednesday with the co-chief of the public corruption section of the U.S. attorney’s office, according to one of the people with knowledge of the matter.

Mr. Epstein’s private conduct has been the subject of intense public interest for years. In 2017, the gossip site Radar Online sued the F.B.I. in the Southern District under the Freedom of Information Act, seeking the release of certain documents related to the investigation and prosecution of Mr. Epstein.

In a declaration submitted in that case in January 2024, Ms. Comey wrote that releasing the documents could damage the government’s case in a potential retrial of Ms. Maxwell, including by subjecting witnesses “to possible embarrassment and harassment” that could make them less likely to testify.

Later that year, the judge overseeing that case sided with the F.B.I.

The girl's attorney, Patrick McDonough, told FOX 5 News that at one point, in a 40-day period, the girl was sold for sex at the hotel more than 200 times.

 

The lawyer said his client was trafficked at the United Inn & Suites in Decatur between 2018 and 2019. He said the staff knew what was happening to his client, and refused to step in. He said the hotel even profited from the crime taking place there.

 

The jury gave the victim $10 million in compensatory damages and $30 million in punitive damages. The ruling was made against Northbrook Industries, Incorporated, doing business as United Inn & Suites.

I used to work in digital forensics, sometimes contracted at the government level. It's WAY worse than you think. There's entire production studios for movies and videos. WASHINGTON, July 16 (Reuters) – The Federal Communications Commission said on Wednesday it plans to adopt rules to bar companies from connecting undersea submarine communication cables to the United States that include Chinese technology or equipment.

 

“We have seen submarine cable infrastructure threatened in recent years by foreign adversaries, like China,” FCC Chair Brendan Carr said in a statement. “We are therefore taking action here to guard our submarine cables against foreign adversary ownership, and access as well as cyber and physical threats.”

 

The United States has for years expressed concerns about China’s role in handling network traffic and the potential for espionage. The U.S. has broad data security concerns about the network of more than 400 subsea cables that handle 99% of international internet traffic.

 

Since 2020, U.S. regulators have been instrumental in the cancellation of four cables whose backers had wanted to link the United States with Hong Kong.

 

The FCC last year said it was considering new rules governing undersea internet cables in the face of growing security concerns, as part of a review of regulations on the links that handle nearly all the world’s online traffic. The FCC said it was considering barring the use of equipment or services in those undersea cable facilities from companies on an FCC list of companies deemed to pose threats to U.S, national security, including Huawei, ZTE 000063.SZ, 601728.SS China Telecom and China Mobile 600941.SS.

 

Carr said the FCC is taking action to “guard our submarine cables against foreign adversary ownership, and access as well as cyber and physical threats.”

 

The FCC will also seek comment on additional measures to protect submarine cable security against foreign adversary equipment.

 

The cutting of two fiber-optic undersea telecommunication cables in the Baltic Sea prompted investigations of possible sabotage.

 

In 2023 Taiwan accused two Chinese vessels of cutting the only two cables that support internet access on the Matsu Islands and Houthi attacks in the Red Sea may have been responsible for the cutting of three cables providing internet service to Europe and Asia.

Port of Long Beach Breaks Ground on $365 Million Terminal Expansion Project

International Transportation Service (ITS) has broken ground on a significant terminal expansion project at the Port of Long Beach that will substantially increase capacity and operational efficiency.

 

The $365 million project will create 19 acres of new land by filling an unneeded slip in the middle of the Pier G terminal. Additionally, ITS will construct a single, continuous wharf measuring 3,400 feet, allowing the simultaneous accommodation of two of the industry’s largest cargo ships.

 

“This investment by ITS will create benefits for decades to come with more cargo moving smoothly without delays and greater opportunities for waterfront labor – union jobs with good, dependable incomes,” said Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson.

 

Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero highlighted ITS’s environmental commitment, noting that the company “became our first to sign a green lease” nearly 20 years ago.

 

Located in the outer harbor, the ITS terminal is currently split by the south slip, which will be filled with approximately 2.5 million cubic yards of reused sediment from within the Harbor District and dredged materials from Newport Harbor. The project is expected to be completed in late 2028.

 

“This project strengthens America’s supply chain by investing in infrastructure the right way — using local labor and U.S.-made materials,” said ITS Long Beach CEO Kim Holtermand.” We’re not just preparing for the future — we’re building it here, at home.”

 

The expansion aligns with the Port’s Green Port Policy, established in 2005, which has implemented programs to improve environmental conditions while maintaining sustainable practices.

Where do these initial three Judges come from? How is it possible for them to have potentially done such damage to the United States of America?

Is it purely a hatred of “TRUMP?” What other reason could it be?

In any event, Leo left The Federalist Society to do his own “thing.” I am so disappointed in The Federalist Society because of the bad advice they gave me on numerous Judicial Nominations.

This is something that cannot be forgotten!With all of that being said, I am very proud of many of our picks, but very disappointed in others.

They always must do what’s right for the Country!

In this case, it is only because of my successful use of Tariffs that many Trillions of Dollars have already begun pouring into the U.S.A. from other Countries, money that, without these Tariffs, we would not be able to get.

It is the difference between having a rich, prosperous, and successful United States of America, and quite the opposite. The ruling by the U.S. Court of International Trade is so wrong, and so political!

Hopefully, the Supreme Court will reverse this horrible, Country threatening decision, QUICKLY and DECISIVELY.

If allowed to stand, this would completely destroy Presidential Power — The Presidency would never be the same! This decision is being hailed all over the World by every Country, other than the United States of America.

professors must grade their tests the same as the rest of the class, who finished the exam in a single class period under the watchful eye of the prof

professors are forbidden from making any notation in the permanent record of these special students that they received this preferential treatment

 

when i was a freshman at a major research university, tuition was $225 per semester for full time students (12-21 credits)

the most expensive textbook was under $20 and the avg was $6-7, and they read like a scholarly treatise

today a typical textbook is over $200, comes with a CD-ROM, access to a web portal, and has more pictures than a stack of comic books

the writing is at what used to be the 4th grade level, and every single page has inane sidebars to help students "relate" the subject to everyday life

and it ALL A LIE

a high-school grad who learns a skilled trade will be earning money while their highschool classmates are going hopelessly into debt

within four yrs, the tradesmen will be earning five times as much as fresh college grads the same age

over a lifetime, 95% of college grads will NEVER earn enough surplus income to merely compensate for the cost of the diploma

I was told Donald Trump would be the end of American democracy, the beginning of American fascism, the ruin of our economy and the best thing ever to happen to Vladimir Putin. What happened? July 16, 2025 (this is USA Today, unheard of)

 

Halfway through 2025, I can't help but recall the bevy of lies that progressives and the mainstream media told me about Donald Trump before and after he won a second term as president.

 

I was told Trump would be the end of American democracy, the beginning of American fascism, the ruin of our economy and the best thing ever to happen to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

 

None of that has happened, and I don't know whether to be disappointed or elated. But I must ask: What happened? And why have things gone so right when they were supposed to be so wrong?

 

Progressives were wrong about the Trump economy

 

Progressives have persistently forecast imminent economic doom since Trump was reelected in November.

 

In April, the Associated Press reported: "President Donald Trump has panicked global financial markets, raised the risk of a recession and broken the political and economic alliances that made much of the world stable for business after World War II."

That same month, Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, declaredthat "Donald Trump is ruining the economy on purpose." And The American Prospect, in an article headlined, "The Great Trump Crash?," predicted that tariffs would "mean an instant, near-total halt of trade between China and the U.S."

 

None of those dire predictions proved to be true.The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq recently reached record highs. Employers added more jobs than expected last month. The inflation rate ticked higher in June, but remains far below the 40-year high that Americans suffered under during the Biden administration.

 

Progressives' scary predictions about international affairs also have proven to be false. Trump was supposed to be the green light Putin needed to pummel Ukraine into submission. Trump's America first stance also was supposed to embolden China and splinter NATO.

In reality, Trump has been a peacemaker, pushing for meaningful ceasefires in conflicts from Gaza to Pakistan, Ukraine to Iran.

 

Trump's efforts in the Middle East alone are worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump set back Iran's development of nuclear weapons, then forged a ceasefire between Iran and Israel. Diplomatic efforts to broker a lasting peace in Gaza also continue.

 

If there is to be a World War III, it doesn't appear imminent. Once again, progressives' claims about Trump were nothing but fearmongering.

 

Democracy remains strong with Trump in the White House

 

Probably the biggest lie the left has told about Trump is that his election would be an "extinction-level threat" for democracy.

 

Six months into Trump's second term, I'm happy to report that democracy is still alive and well.Just look at recent headlines: New York Democrats exercised their right to vote for a socialist to run America's largest city. Millions of Americans marched in "No Kings" protests to criticize the president. Other protestors have taken to the streets to demonstrate against enforcement of our nation's immigration laws.

 

Despite liberals' oft-repeated fears, the evidence overwhelmingly points to a healthy democracy, where Americans vote for the candidates of their choice and raise their voices to call out politicians and policies they don't like.

Czechia’s possible adoption of the euro in the future may emerge as an issue in the upcoming parliamentary elections this October.

 

While most parties in the current governing coalition have expressed support for adopting the common European currency, the opposition ANO movement — widely expected to win the largest share of the vote — remains firmly opposed.

 

ANO leader Andrej Babiš has repeatedly dismissed the euro as economically dangerous and politically unwise. “I do not support it,” he said bluntly, warning that if the current coalition retained power, “they will introduce the euro.”

 

He argued that adopting the euro would lead to higher prices and force Czechia to take on the financial liabilities of heavily indebted eurozone members. Instead, he advocates keeping the Czech crown, following the example of wealthy non-euro EU states such as Denmark and Sweden.

 

Czechia committed to adopting the euro when it joined the European Union in 2004, but remains one of only three countries from that enlargement round — alongside Poland and Hungary — that have yet to join.

 

Other opposition parties are similarly critical. Kateřina Konečná of the far-left STAČILO! movement said, “The euro means higher prices,” citing Croatia’s experience. “I am against giving up the Czech crown, which would, among other things, give up another part of our sovereignty.” Her party has called for any future decision to be made by referendum.

 

The populist Motorists, led by Petr Macinka, and the right-wing SPD under Tomio Okamura also reject euro adoption.

 

“We would be giving up another part of our sovereignty and submitting even more to Brussels,” said Macinka. Okamura’s SPD warned of a forced sharing of debt burdens with large Western states and added, “The Czech crown is also a national symbol.”

 

The fledgling Motorists are seen as a possible coalition partner for Babiš’s ANO should the parliamentary arithmetic not allow it to govern on its own; however, such an alliance would be subject to the party reaching the threshold to enter parliament. Okamura’s SPD is less likely to be seen as a viable partner, given its more hardline approach, but it is not impossible.

 

While political resistance remains strong among right-leaning and nationalist parties, much of the current government coalition takes the opposite view.

 

STAN leader and Deputy Prime Minister Vít Rakušan has declared, “The Czech Republic should adopt the euro as soon as possible,” calling for a parallel public education campaign to dispel what he termed myths about the currency.

 

Pirates vice-chairman Zdeněk Hřib also supports swift adoption, claiming it would boost economic stability, strengthen Europe, and save the state up to 30 billion crowns annually in debt servicing costs.

 

Prime Minister Petr Fiala has struck a more cautious tone, acknowledging that the Czech Republic now meets key Maastricht criteria but warning that public opposition remains too high.

 

“Majority public support is key to the decision to launch the process of adopting the euro,” he said.

 

“This condition has not yet been met.”

 

A Median poll from early 2024 found that more than two-thirds of Czechs believed adopting the euro would not be beneficial, with three in five wanting a referendum on the issue. Students and entrepreneurs were somewhat more supportive, with 45 percent and 40 percent backing the euro, respectively.

 

This heavily contrasts with support among businesses, with a PwC survey showing nearly 70 percent of CEOs see euro adoption as beneficial to their companies, citing savings on transaction costs, elimination of exchange rate risks, and greater investor confidence. “Seven out of ten bosses convinced of the positive impact of the euro on their company is already a very strong signal sent to the new government,” said PwC partner Jan Brázda.

Crowds on Demand CEO Says His Company Rejected $20 MILLION Offer to Recruit Anti Trump Protestors for Nationwide Demonstrations on Thursday – Says He was Worried about “Violent Agitators”

Crowds on Demand CEO Adam Swart revealed in an interview this week that his company was offered a $20 million contract for an astroturfed nationwide anti-Trump demonstration scheduled for Thursday.

 

Crowds on Demand is the “largest protest company in the country,” Swart said, noting that they specialize in corporate publicity and celebrity publicity. “We’re probably best known for political advocacy group publicity, that is, creating crowds of peaceful, enthusiastic demonstrators to turn out in favor of a particular cause or in opposition to one.

 

As The Gateway Pundit reported, leftist groups have planned over 400 protests across the nation on the anniversary of the death of Democrat activist and congressman John Lewis.

 

Like many other recent nationwide days of protest, including the now-infamous “No Kings” day, the “Good Trouble Lives On” protests are being organized by the 50501 Movement.

These types of demonstrations are known for using paid participants and agitators to stir up the crowds. As seen in Los Angeles, California, thousands of suspected paid rioters were present, and one individual was indicted on federal charges for delivering bionic face shields to the rioters.

 

"Interests aligned with the organizers of the July 17 movement have approached us, and in fact, we rejected an offer that probably is worth around $20 million," Swart revealed in an interview with NewsNation's Brian Entin. Swart says he turned the contract down.

 

"I just don't think it's effective," he said, adding that "it's going to make us all look bad." He cited Trump's continued support despite the ongoing protests for the ineffectiveness of these movements. "This is the same old noise that has failed to land with the American people this last 6/7 months.

 

Swart told Entin that his company has a "large network of people" that they "compensate" for turning out to demonstrations.

 

Swart did not say who exactly offered him the $20 million to maintain the privacy of his clients, Entin said after he interviewed Swart.

 

Entin further reported, "he said he had some concern about violence based on what he's seen in the past, but mostly he just doesn't think that it's productive or really making a difference, big picture, about how the country feels about President Trump. And he says he just didn't want to get involved."

 

During the interview, Swart noted that peaceful demonstrators could be lumped in with "a violent agitator throwing a molotov cocktail" and create a "very big problem" with police being unable to differentiate between protestors and rioters.

What I'm saying is, I'm saying I'm rejecting it, not because I don't want to take the business, but because, frankly, this is going to be ineffective. It's going to make us all look bad.
