Brazil’s Lula tells Trump he’s not ‘emperor of the world’

The Brazilian leader vows an “answer” to the US president’s tariff threat

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has pushed back against US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a sweeping 50% tariff on Brazilian imports, vowing an appropriate “answer” to defend the interests of the Brazilian people.

In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Lula said he was surprised both by the content and the manner of Trump’s threat, which was delivered via a letter posted on Truth Social last week. In it, Trump announced a blanket 50% tariff on all Brazilian goods starting August 1 and demanded an end to what he called a “witch hunt” against the “highly respected” former president Jair Bolsonaro, who stands accused of attempting to orchestrate a coup following his 2022 election defeat.

“When I read the letter, I thought it was fake news,” Lula said, describing the move as “breaking away from any protocol, any liturgy, that should exist between the relations between two heads of state.”

“We cannot have President Trump forgetting that he was elected to govern the US – he was not elected to be the emperor of the world,” Lula stated. “Brazil will not accept anything imposed on it. We accept negotiation, not imposition.”

While expressing openness to dialogue, Lula said Brazil is “also preparing ourselves to give an answer” – despite Trump’s warning that any retaliation could lead to even steeper tariffs.

“If President Trump is willing to take seriously the negotiations underway between Brazil and the US, then I’ll be open-minded to negotiate whatever may be necessary,” Lula added.

Lula previously rejected Trump’s claim that Brazil is responsible for trade imbalances, pointing to US government data showing a $410 billion US surplus in goods and services trade with Brazil over the past 15 years. Earlier this week, the US launched an official investigation to determine what was so “unfair” about Brazil’s trade practices.

Trump has previoulsy threatened an additional 10% tariff on all BRICS nations, accusing the bloc of trying to “destroy the dollar as the global standard.” He further warned that Russia’s trading partners could face a secondary 100% tariff unless the war in Ukraine is resolved within 50 days. Even at 50%, Brazil would face the highest US import tariff announced so far.

A Maryland man who previously worked for Voice of America has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges related to threats made against Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and her family.

The indictment, which was unsealed on Thursday, reveals a series of threats made over a 15-month period. Seth Jason, of Edgewater, Maryland faces four charges: influencing a federal official by threatening a family member; anonymous telecommunications harassment; influencing a federal official by threat; and interstate communications with a threat to injure or kidnap.

According to prosecutors, from late January 2024 through early January 2025, Jason issued repeated threats targeting Greene’s family members, reports The Hill. The indictment also alleges that from October 11, 2023, through January 2025, Jason threatened to assault and kill the congresswoman.

Jason was arrested early Thursday by the US Capitol Police in coordination with Anne Arundel County police.

The Capitol Police investigation traced the threatening calls to multiple phone lines associated with studios and control rooms at the VOA headquarters in Washington, DC, the US attorney’s office for the District of Columbia said.

Jason allegedly used taxpayer-funded equipment to place at least eight threatening calls over the 15-month span. Authorities say he threatened to use firearms to kill Greene, her staff, and their families.

Kari Lake, who is currently serving as President Trump’s adviser to the United States Agency for Global Media, responded to the indictment on Thursday. She thanked interim US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro for "taking these threats seriously."

New Hampshire GOP governor vetoes bills to protect parental rights in education, vaccine freedom

Republican Governor Kelly Ayotte cited her role as a ‘parent’ in vetoing legislation meant to protect parental rights in education. She also sided with the LGBT lobby and against protected spaces for girls.

New Hampshire’s socially liberal Republican Governor Kelly Ayotte recently vetoed legislation meant to protect girls from being preyed on by gender-confused men. She also sided with liberals on mandatory vaccines, pornographic books in schools, surveying kids about private information, and teaching them about fetal development.

House Bill 148 would affirm that state antidiscrimination law does not forbid entities from keeping men out of girls’ sports, bathrooms, and locker rooms.

“This bill permits classification of individuals based on biological sex in lavatory facilities and locker rooms, sporting competitions, and detention facilities,” according to an analysis posted by LegiScan.

Ayotte sided with the transgender lobby and vetoed the bill, claiming it could be “exclusionary.”

“I believe there are important and legitimate privacy and safety concerns raised by biological males using places such as female locker rooms and being placed in female correctional facilities,” Ayotte wrote. “At the same time, I see that House Bill 148 is overly broad and impractical to enforce, potentially creating an exclusionary environment for some of our citizens.”

Ayotte also tried to play both sides in her statement, saying she “believe[s] that the legislature should address this serious issue” but “it must be done in a thoughtful and narrow way that protects the privacy, safety, and rights of all New Hampshire citizens.”

“However, with House Bill 148, I have concerns about the broadness of this bill, the unintended impacts accompanying its implementation, and that it will spur a plethora of litigation against local communities and businesses,” she wrote.

Much like liberal California Governor Gavin Newsom, Ayotte said she is concerned about men playing in girls’ sports but does not plan to sign legislation to actually address the issue.

Shas spiritual leader recorded calling Netanyahu a ‘liar’ and a ‘blind fox’

After the Shas party withdrew from the government — though not from the coalition — a key spiritual leader of the Haredi party is recorded lambasting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Likud MK Yuli Edelstein, the head of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

According to Channel 13, Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, until recently the Sephardi chief rabbi of Israel, made the comments to young Haredi men at his synagogue, blasting the politicians over their failure to reach agreements with the ultra-Orthodox parties regarding a law to exempt Haredi yeshiva students from military service.

“The prime minister told me one can get recruited to the army while Haredi and end the service while Haredi,” Yosef said. “Why are you a liar? Such audacity to lie like that.”

Yosef refers to a famous quote by his late father, Shas founder and prominent ultra-Orthodox spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, who once called Netanyahu a “blind goat.”

“And I say [he’s] a blind fox and not a blind goat,” he continues, alleging that no ultra-Orthodox person can go through army service without “going astray.”

Yosef then turns to Edelstein, a Soviet-born Jew and former refusenik who served in labor camps and was eventually allowed to immigrate to Israel. The rabbi seizes on the fact that Edelstein’s father ended up converting to Christianity and becoming a priest.

“There is one, whose father converted to Christianity and is a priest — this one grew up in a priest’s home and he’s doing all the trouble to the yeshiva students,” he says. “He’s with a kippa, and he’s doing all the trouble. Your father is a priest! You will come and harm the Torah students?”
