Ukraine unlikely to join EU in the near term – Merz
Kiev’s membership will not happen before the bloc’s current financial cycle ends in 2034, the German chancellor has said
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has downplayed the prospect of Ukraine joining the EU in the near future, saying it is unlikely to happen during the bloc’s current budget cycle, which runs through 2034. Some EU officials had suggested the country could become a member much earlier.
Ukraine made EU accession a national priority in 2019, formally applying in 2022 shortly after the escalation of the conflict with Russia. It was granted candidate status later that year, with the European Commission suggesting Kiev could join by 2030 if it made sufficient progress in areas such as political and judicial reforms, as well as in combating organized crime and corruption.
Merz made the remarks on Friday during a press conference with Romanian President Nicusor Dan in Berlin.
“For us, the absolute top priority is, first and foremost, to do everything possible to end this war,” he said, adding, “then we’ll talk about the reconstruction of Ukraine.”
That process, he said, would take “a number of years” and likely fall outside the EU’s current medium-term financial outlook.
EU membership requires the unanimous approval of all 27 member states. While Brussels supports Kiev’s bid, some of the bloc’s nations – including Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland – remain opposed, arguing that Ukraine’s institutions and economy are unprepared and that membership would place an unbearable financial strain on the union.
Moscow strongly opposes Ukraine’s NATO ambitions, but initially took a neutral stance on EU membership. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in March that Kiev had the “sovereign right” to join, as long as the bloc remained focused on economics.
However, amid a broader drive among European NATO states to boost their militaries, Russian officials have grown more critical.
In June, the EU redirected approximately €335 billion ($390 billion) in Covid relief funds towards military uses. The month before that, Brussels introduced a €150 billion debt and loan instrument to back its members’ armed forces and military industrial sector. The funding will also be made available to Kiev.
Russia has condemned those steps, accusing both NATO and the EU of “rabid militarization.”Former President Dmitry Medvedev said the EU now poses “no less of a threat” to Russia than US-led NATO.

Ukraine offered Russia timeframe for talks – Zelensky
The two sides have held two rounds of peace negotiations so far this year
The secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), Rustem Umerov,has proposed holding a new round of talks with Russia next week, Vladimir Zelensky has announced. A source in Russia’s negotiating team has confirmed to RT that the offer was received.
The two sides have held two rounds of direct negotiations in Istanbul so far this year, with Umerov leading the Ukrainian delegation. At their most recent meeting in June, the negotiators exchanged draft proposals outlining their visions for a peace deal and agreed on further prisoner exchanges. Moscow has since confirmed its readiness to continue the talks.
“The pace of negotiations must be increased. Everything must be done to achieve a ceasefire,”Zelensky stated in his Saturday evening remarks. (Trump gave him the mandate, after what Tulsi revealed.)
Last month in Istanbul, the Russian delegation offered a conditional ceasefire, saying Moscow would agree to a truce if Kiev took meaningful steps to deescalate, including suspending deliveries of Western military aid. The proposal was rejected.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also accused Ukraine of seeking a pause in the fighting to rearm and regroup its forces. Moscow has warned that it will not accept the presence of NATO troops in Ukraine, even if they are deployed in the guise of peacekeepers.
Zelensky once again sought a personal meeting with Putin “to truly ensure peace – a really lasting one,” saying that Kiev is ready for such a summit.
The Ukrainian leader’s presidential term expired last year, and Moscow considers him illegitimate. In June, Putin said he was open to meeting with the actor-turned-politician, but suggested that Zelensky lacks the legitimacy to sign binding agreements.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova recentlysaid that Zelensky was pushing for one-on-one talks in an effort to defend his legitimacy and resist Western attempts to remove him from power.

Over 100 British spies and commandos exposed in data leak
The breach and the government’s response to it areprojected to cost up to £7 billion
The identities of more than 100 MI6 spies, British special forces operatives and other military personnel were compromised in a massive data breach which was subsequently covered up, multiple media organizations reported on Thursday.
The fallout from the massive British Defense Ministry Afghanistan leak was kept from public view under a court-imposed superinjunction for years. That gag order was lifted Tuesday by a High Court judge, allowing the media to report on the incident.
Days later, several news outlets revealed that UK military and intelligence personnel were among those exposed.
The names of more than 100 British officials were in the leaked data, including members of MI6 and special forces, the BBC admitted on Thursday.
The UK Defense Ministry had originally leaked a spreadsheet via a mistakenly sent email in February 2022 containing then personal details of nearly 19,000 Afghans. These individuals had worked with the British during the decades-long US-led war in Afghanistan and had applied for resettlement in the UK, fearing retaliation from the Taliban.
The data breach resurfaced the following year, when someone in Afghanistan posted part of it on Facebook and threatened to publish the rest. This prompted London to scramble to put a gag order on the matter and create a secret relocation scheme for those affected. The individuals were not informed of the leak “despite the risk to their safety,” according to the BBC.
The total costs of relocating thousands of Afghans and their families to the UK and housing them, “could be assumed to run into several billion pounds,” according to Judge Justice Chamberlain, who lifted the superinjunction. A total of 4,500 people have been moved from Afghanistan to the UK under the scheme to date, the BBC reported on Thursday.
UK Defense Secretary John Healey has issued a “sincere apology” on behalf of London to those whose information was compromised in the data breach. He said he was “unable to say for sure”whether anyone had been killed as a result of the leak, according to the BBC.

Zelensky may not last much longer – Seymour Hersh
Former General Valery Zaluzhny could step in amid declining support for the Ukrainian leader, according to the journalist
The political future of Ukraine’s VladimirZelensky appears increasingly uncertain, according to officials in Washingtoncited by legendary journalist Seymour Hersh. The prospect of the politician being replaced by former armed forces commander Valery Zaluzhny is reportedly growing amid waning domestic support and mounting frustration in Washington.
Zelensky suspended national elections under martial law and opted not to step down after his presidential term officially ended in 2024. His former top military commander, who was dismissed earlier this year and later appointed ambassador to the UK, has reportedly long been considered a potential successor.
“Zelensky is on a short list for exile, if [US] President Donald Trump decides to make the call,”the veteran reporter wrote on Friday.
One US official familiar with internal discussions suggested that if Zelensky refuses to step down — which they believe is the most likely scenario — he may ultimately be removed by force.
Zaluzhny is currently seen as the most credible successor to Ukraine’s leader, according to “knowledgeable” officials in Washington cited by Hersh, who added that the “job could be his within a few months.”
Zelensky’s popularity, which soared to 90% in the early months after the Ukraine conflict escalated in February 2022, has steadily declined due to battlefield setbacks and ongoing economic difficulties. The latest polls suggest that only 52% of Ukrainians still trust him, while around 60% would prefer he not seek another term.
Western media outlets have recently shifted their tone, with some portraying Zelensky as increasingly authoritarian. Others have reported that officials in Washington believe “it’s time for an election and new leadership.”
Russian officials have also raised concerns about Zelensky’s legitimacy, arguing that any international agreements signed under his leadership could be legally challenged. While Moscow has expressed a willingness to negotiate with Zelensky, it remains skeptical of his authority to finalize any lasting deal.

A spokesperson for the Russian embassy in the US, quoted by the TASS news agency, confirmed the departure of the plane from Washington on New Year's Day.
The aircraft was part of the Rossiya airline's special flight detachment group - the carrier for the president of Russia and other government officials.

"You know, if you have something really important, write it out and have it delivered by courier, the old-fashioned way," he said.
"Because I'll tell you what - no computer is safe."

Never before in American history has a departing president connived to sabotage and destroy the man who would replace him.
Newly revealed documents show that in 2016 then-President Barack Obama and his national security team "manufactured and politicized" phony intelligence to help frame Donald Trump as a Russian asset when they knew it was untrue.
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard who unearthed and released the declassified documents on Friday described it as an "egregious abuse of power" that amounts to a "treasonous conspiracy."
Treason is a strong term with an exceedingly high legal standard. So, too, is seditious conspiracy. The use of violence or force is often a central element for both.
Closer to the mark are other serious crimes. They include conspiracy to defraud the government and deprivation of rights under the color of law. That is, using knowingly false or fabricated evidence to support a case against Trump and to obstruct or impair a lawful government function such as an election.
Not surprisingly, the genesis of the plot began with Hillary Clinton. On July 26, 2016, she allegedly approved an illicit scheme to sully her political opponent for colluding with Russia to rig the upcoming presidential election. The bogus smear was intended to distract from her own burgeoning email scandal. Hillary’s campaign commissioned and funded a dossier that was little more than a collection of lies supplied by Clinton confederates.
The CIA discovered what Hillary had done and immediately alerted the Obama White House. In two successive meetings on July 28 and Aug. 3, 2016, then-CIA Director John Brennan briefed the president and other top officials, including Vice President Joe Biden, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and FBI Director James Comey.
Brennan’s handwritten notes from the Situation Room show how he recounted Clinton’s plan "to vilify Donald Trump by stirring up a scandal claiming interference by the Russian security service." From that point on, it was a closely guarded secret.
It was all a hoax, and the above-named participants well knew it. Yet, none of them had the integrity to step forward to tell either Congress or the American people the truth.
Instead, they watched in silence as Comey and his FBI acolytes launched a dilating investigation of Trump dubbed "Crossfire Hurricane."They shamelessly weaponized their authority and contorted the law to persecute Trump. As planned, the fake collusion narrative was leaked to the Trump-hating media.
Almost from the outset, the FBI had debunked the dossier and later fired its author, Christopher Steele, for lying. The ex-British spy had been a paid source for the FBI. By concealing this vital information, Comey sought and obtained surveillance warrants from the FISA court on a Trump campaign associate, Carter Page. No evidence of wrongdoing was ever discovered because none existed.
When the Russia hoax failed to prevent Trump from winning the presidency, the same malevolent adversaries doubled down on the Clinton-inspired scheme.
The new documents released by Gabbard show that a Dec. 8, 2016 draft of the President’s Daily Briefing (PDB) assessed that "Russian and criminal actors did not impact recent US election results by conducting malicious cyber activities against election infrastructure."
But that conclusion, compiled by top intelligence agencies, did not conform to the Trump collusion narrative. Comey and others apparently scuttled the PDB and concocted an alternative plan.
The next day, Dec. 9, Obama convened select cabinet officials, along with Clapper, Brennan, and FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. A new Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) was ordered that would undermine the PDB and perpetuate the Trump-Russia collusion fiction.
The replacement narrative would claim that Russia intervened in the 2016 election to help Trump win the presidency. It didn’t seem to matter that it was not true.
Brennan and Comey ensured that the discredited dossier was incorporated in the ICA, which was rushed to completion before the new president took office. Why the urgency? So that Comey could use it to entrap Trump into a false confession before his inauguration…

A criminal referral submitted by William Pulte, Director of the U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), to Attorney General Pam Bondi, accuses Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) of possibly violating multiple federal statutes, including wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud, and making false statements to financial institutions.
According to a report published on July 17, Pulte’s referral is based on findings from Fannie Mae financial crimes investigators and outlines what he describes as a “pattern of possible occupancy misrepresentation” connected to Schiff’s handling of real estate holdings in Maryland and California from 2003 to 2019.“
Based on media reports, Mr. Adam B. Schiff has, in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms, impacting payments from 2003–2019 for a Potomac, Maryland-based property,” Pulte wrote in the referral.At the center of the allegations is Schiff’s repeated declaration of both his California and Maryland residences as “primary residences” on mortgage applications. This move would violate federal rules permitting only one primary residence designation at a time.
The referral cites instances in 2009, 2011, and 2013 where Schiff refinanced his Maryland home while simultaneously identifying a California condominium as his principal residence.
According to the referral, this dual-claim arrangement was not corrected until 2020, when Schiff reclassified the Maryland property as a secondary residence.
“Primary residence mortgages receive more favorable loan terms, including lower interest rates, than secondary residence mortgages,” Pulte stated in the referral.
