NPR News Chief Edith Chapin Stepping Down

NPR’s news chief Edith Chapin — who has served as the chief editor since 2023 — is stepping down from her role by the end of the year, an email to staffers revealed.

“Two years with two big executive jobs has been a comprehensive assignment,” Chapin wrote in a memo obtained by the Washington Post. “I love journalism, it has been my life for more than 35 years, and I will keep championing it for many more years.”

She added that she plans to “reset after a few months of a career break.” Her last day has not been explicitly stated, however, as she wrote, “I’ll be here for a while.”

NPR chief executive Katherine Maher wrote in a memo to staffers on Tuesday that Chapin — who has been with NPR in various capacities since 2012 — made the decision roughly two weeks ago, writing, “Edith has been an indispensable partner during my first year at NPR, a steady leader for a large part of this organization, and a fantastic collaborator as a member of the executive team.”

“She didn’t bat an eye when I walked in the door, and has shown me the ropes around this place with patience and sincerity. When it comes to steely fortitude in service of the mission, I sure wouldn’t want anyone else in our foxhole,” Maher continued.

This news comes as NPR goes through another major transition, as broadcasting institutions NPR and PBS are losing their flow of taxpayer dollars thanks to President Donald Trump’s rescission bill.

The Financial Times reports broadcasting institutions NPR and PBS would lose their flow of taxpayer dollars when the package, which the Republican-led Senate approved after 2 a.m. by 51 votes to 48, is signed into law.

“If these types of emergency alerting go away, you will have fewer outlets to be able to respond in real time,” she added.

Kentucky Senate Republican Candidate Andy Barr Bankrolling Pro-Amnesty Republicans Like Maria Salazar

Kentucky Senate Republican candidate Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY) has bankrolled prominent Republican sponsors of a recently proposed bill that would provide amnesty to illegal aliens.

Barr hopes to replace the outgoing Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), saying, “In the Senate, no one will fight harder to keep the border closed and deport illegals.”

He wrote on his campaign website, “Andy Barr believes we must deport all illegals and close the border.”

The Kentucky Republican also attacked MAGA Republicans who want to deport illegal aliens and curb immigration as “nativists,” in a similar vein to Hillary Clinton accusing Donald Trump of embracing a nativist political movement.

Barr told Red, White, and Bluegrass host Bode Brooks, “At the same time, our agriculture sector, our hospitality sector in Kentucky, they certainly need legal workers, the horse industry, I’ve had the privilege of representing them and the great thing about the president’s policies that will secure the border and keep our communities safe is that it will create the opportunity to streamline our overly bureaucratic legal guest worker programs so that our signature industries have the labor they need.”

The Kentucky Republican remarked, “Some of these ‘nativists,’ frankly, are directly at odds with the agriculture sector in Kentucky. We are a nation of immigrants, but we are also a nation of laws.”

It appears that Barr has financial backed Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) and ten other House Republicans that introduced the Dignity Act, a bill to provide amnesty to illegal aliens.

Former Breitbart News Executive Chairman and War Room host Steve Bannon described these Republicans as “traitorous.”

The National Review chastised the bill, writing, “Congress should read the signs of the time and reject this bill as yet another attempt to sneak mass amnesty by an American people who have been demanding law and order for decades.”

The Trump administration shot down this proposal, summarily stating, “The president made it clear he will not support amnesty for illegal aliens in any way.”

It appears that Barr has backed Salazar and many of the lawmakers backing the bill.

Building America’s Republican Representation PAC, Barr’s leadership PAC, has donated $10,500 to Salazar’s congressional campaign since 2020.

Jessica Vaughn, the policy director for the Center for Immigration Studies, has said Salazar’s suggestion that Trump owes God a favor and should repay the debt by providing amnesty is “insulting”:

She thinks that that’s what he’s a sucker for, [and for] flattery, and [her] promises that he will be loved more by the people she’s advocating on behalf of … [But] he doesn’t need these people — they’re never going to agree with him on any of his immigration policy goals.

Valadao has long called for amnesty, saying in 2013, “Addressing immigration reform in the House cannot wait. I am serious about making real progress and will remain committed to doing whatever it takes to repair our broken immigration system.”

He even voted against a bill proposed by then-Rep. and now-Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) to stop Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) amnesty program.

Bacon has said he backs amnesty to illegal aliens, including those in the DACA program.

“I do think the President’s willing, and I’m surely willing, to have a balanced approach. I personally think people came here as kids, no fault of their own, and we should have a plan for them,” Bacon said in January.

Exclusive – Sen. Eric Schmitt: Rescissions Victory Will ‘Disrupt the Status Quo’ in DC

President Donald Trump achieved another landmark win early Friday morning, and Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) played a starring role.

Trump and Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought tapped Schmitt to run point on the White House rescissions package in the Senate, ultimately securing passage in a tight 51-48 vote. The House of Representatives then passed the Senate-amended $9 billion rescissions package in the wee hours Friday morning, the culmination of weeks of work for a victory that has eluded conservatives for decades.

“It doesn’t happen every day,” Schmitt told Breitbart News in an exclusive interview. “It’s the first time really had one in decades. It just further cements President Trump’s agenda.”

The package ends taxpayer subsidization of left-leaning NPR and PBS and eliminates funding for foreign aid grants for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

“People have talked about defunding NPR and Corporation for Public Broadcasting for a long time, but it’s never happened,” Schmitt said. “I think as much as the 9 billion matters — or 90 billion in the ten-year window, that matters a lot — but I also think for us to be able to say, ‘Look, we found the waste, fraud, and abuse, and we actually did something about it’ is pretty meaningful.”

The $9 billion in cuts is far from chump change, but the White House would like to go even further in rescinding “crazy” spending through additional rescissions packages, Schmitt said.

“The American people spoke pretty loudly,” in November, he said. “They wanted us to disrupt the status quo here in permanent Washington.”

By essentially disabling USAID, the rescissions package delivered on a core America First promise that should send a message to other rogue agencies, Schmitt believes.

“You’re gone, and you need to fold it up into the State Department so that your mission aligns with core American interests, as opposed to this wandering woke ideology of the left,” he said emphatically.

The rescissions package, while significant, also represents a piece of an even larger puzzle, “not just the dollars and cents, but symbolically, this course correction that we’re able to execute,” Schmitt told Breitbart News, adding he is “really gratified to be the sponsor and then managing the floor and working with colleagues throughout the night.”

“We didn’t lose any amendment votes,” he added. “We didn’t lose any of the 9 billion along the way — that took a lot of hard work and effort. And I think [Senate Majority Leader] John Thune (R-SD) and [Senate Majority Whip] John Barrasso (R-WY) were great to work with on this. They were incredibly helpful, and they were steady on this. They wanted to make sure we got this done for the President, for the American people.”

Congress’s inability to pass timely appropriations bills is well discussed, routinely passing massive omnibus legislation or continuing resolutions instead of each of the twelve appropriations bills required by law.

Rescissions gives Congress the ability to perform surgical cuts with only 51 votes in the Senate, eliminating much of the waste stuffed into spending bills which require 60 votes in the upper chamber.

“That is what the rescissions process is for, is you find it and you cut it out,” Schmitt said. “It’s a great way for us to help restore some trust that if there is this wasteful spending, there’s a mechanism that can work to go do something about it. And, and I think that was what was unique about this. Hopefully we get this into our muscle memory and we can do more of these.”

Schmitt blasted Democrats for their budget priorities, as the party struggles to find a direction amid a Marxist insurgence led by New York City’s Democrat mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani.

“Are they a mainstream party?” he asked. “They’re about ready to elect a communist in New York, and AOC and Bernie Sanders are the ones that draw crowds, and they still have Trump Derangement Syndrome, and they have no agenda. They have no leader. They’re just a wandering woke party that doesn’t appeal to Middle America in any way, shape or form.”

Democrats’ crisis presents Republicans an opportunity, but also a responsibility, Schmitt believes.

“It’s up to us, then, as Republicans, to say, ‘Okay, we’re going to find this nonsense and we’re going to root it out.’ I think that’s what people voted for, and that’s the kind of reform agenda that’ll allow us to grow our majorities.”

Vought, always on the offensive, said Thursday ahead of the House rescissions vote that the appropriations process has to be “less bipartisan,” adding, “There’s no voter in the country that went to the polls and said, ‘I’m voting for a bipartisan appropriations process.'” Yet with only 53 votes in the Senate and a slim House majority, and a handful of moderates in each chamber — most notably Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Susan Collins (R-ME), Republicans must strike the right balance to notch wins.

“You gotta have the votes pass, but for me, I’d certainly like to have the most conservative bill possible. And I think we did that during the rescissions package,” he said. “That’s a $9 billion product, and the key was the Democrats and others were trying to whittle that number down throughout the evening. We beat all that stuff back. So I think it’s a testament that we can have conservative legislation.”

With just over two months before the end of the fiscal year, Trump and his allies on Capitol Hill want to press the agenda on spending after securing a rescissions win.

“Look, we want to be successful, and I think that kind of success brings its own momentum and also allows us to tell a very important story,” Schmitt said. “President Trump got elected in a landslide popular vote in battleground states to shake up Washington, and we can be partners in that. And I think that’s what the American people want to see, and why the successes from the big, beautiful bill and the rescissions package now are really important.”

The office of former President Barack Obama responded to Trump’s assertion that Barack Obama was the “ringleader” of the Russia collusion hoax.

Last Friday, ODNI Tulsi Gabbard declassified a December 2016 presidential briefing revealing Barack Obama knew the Trump-Russia collusion narrative was a hoax.

Barack Obama knew it was a hoax and he was involved in manufacturing and politicizing the intelligence to create the Trump-Russia collusion canard.

“We assess that foreign adversaries did not use cyber attacks on election infrastructure to alter the US Presidential election outcome this year. We have no evidence of cyber manipulation of election infrastructure intended to alter results,” the report said.

On Tuesday President Trump said Obama is guilty of treason.

“Barack Hussein Obama is the ringleader. Hillary Clinton was right there with him and so was Sleepy Joe Biden… and so were the rest of them. Comey, Clapper, the whole group,” Trump said on Tuesday during remarks to reporters in the Oval Office.

“This was treason…they tried to steal the election…” Trump said.

Trump continued, “President Obama – it was his concept, his idea, but he also got it from Crooked Hillary Clinton – crooked as a three dollar bill.”

Barack Obama’s spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush released a statement on Tuesday:

“Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response. But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one. These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction,” Obama’s office said.

“Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes. These findings were affirmed in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio.”

A federal judge assigned to oversee the Justice Department’s request to unseal Epstein documents has responded with a list of demands. US District Judge Paul Englemayer, an Obama appointee, responded to the DOJ’s request to unseal grand jury records.

Recall that Judge Englemayer previously blocked DOGE from accessing Treasury records. Judge Englemayer is now assigned to the Epstein file release case.

Last week US Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche filed a motion asking a federal court to release grand jury transcripts associated with the Epstein cases.

The court documents are related to the 2019 grand jury indictment charging Jeffrey Epstein with sex trafficking offenses and the June 2020 grand jury indictment of Ghislaine Maxwell with numerous offenses related to the trafficking and coercion of minors.

“Since July 6, 2025, there has been extensive public interest in the basis for the Memorandum’s conclusions. While the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation continue to adhere to the conclusions reached in the Memorandum, transparency to the American public is of the utmost importance to this Administration,” they wrote in a court filing reviewed by The Gateway Pundit.

“Given the public interest in the investigative work conducted by the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation into Epstein, the Department of Justice moves the Court to unseal the underlying grand jury transcripts in United States v. Epstein, subject to appropriate redactions of victim-related and other personal identifying information,” they said.

Judge Englemayer made a list of demands in his response to the Justice Department.

(Many competent and high level lawyers, thought this would be an unusual request for the judge to release the information.)

• whether the defendant to the grand jury proceeding of the Government opposes the disclosure

• the current status of the principals of the grand jury proceedings and that of their families

• the extent to which the desired material — either permissibly or impermissibly – has been previously made public

• whether witnesses to the grand jury proceedings who might be affected by disclosure are still alive; and

• [whether there is an] additional need for maintaining secrecy in the particular case in question

Englemayer also said he needs a letter from Ghislaine Maxwell and the victims by August 5.

The judge also asked for a detailed explanation from the Justice Department related to Maxwell’s grand jury transcript material by July 29.

Update: Maxwell’s attorneys said they have no objection to the DOJ’s request for access to grand jury transcripts.

According to the newly declassified and released documents, and according to congressional testimony by FBI Director James Comey on March 20, 2017, both Rice and Ruemmler lied about their knowledge.
