Ukraine was a rump state.
It was a place of landlords leasing out their serfs to wealthy . . . . who worked the land.
Ukraine then became the darling of the Bolshivicks because they figured that they would collapse the Soviet, and then fan out to the West, and eventually make Kiev the capital of their new (undercover) empire.
So they kept giving more and more land to the Ukraine which grew in size through the THEFT of other nations holdings. I'll include a map to show you this.
When the Russian Empire collapses and the Kiev mafia took over . . . they grew Ukraine even more, giving it The Crimea.
