Imperial flag hoisted in front of toy museum in North Germany

The imperial flag has been hoisted in front of the North Sea Automobile and Toy Museum near Norddeich (Aurich district). The museum operator assures that this was a mistake.

The flag from the imperial era was part of a larger donation of national flags. The flags were only recently given to the museum and have not yet been examined in detail or classified historically, according to the museum. The

Ostfriesen-Zeitung newspaper was the first to report on the incident. An employee hoisted several of these flags, including the Reich flag, “to visually enhance the overall appearance.” When asked by NDR Lower Saxony, the museum management denied that there was any political motive for hoisting the Reich flag. They regret the incident. According to the museum, the flag has since been taken down.

Displaying the Reich flag is not a criminal offense

The Reich flag in black, white, and red was the official national flag of the German Empire during the imperial era from 1892 onwards. Until 1935, it was one of the two national flags of the so-called Third Reich. According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, displaying this historical flag is not a criminal offense.

Even the so-called Reichskriegsflagge (Imperial War Flag) does not violate “any provisions of the Criminal Code or the Administrative Offenses Act,” according to the statement. The museum therefore did not violate any laws by hoisting the Reich flag. However, according to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the flag can be confiscated if there are “specific threats to public safety and order.”
