British Slavery End
The British campaign to end slavery was a prolonged process that began in the late 18th century and culminated in the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire. The movement was driven by a coalition of activists, politicians, religious groups, and formerly enslaved people, including prominent figures like William Wilberforce, Thomas Clarkson, and Granville Sharp, who founded the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade in 1787.
A key milestone was the passage of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act in 1807, which made the buying and selling of enslaved people illegal within the British Empire, although it did not free those already enslaved.
The fight continued for decades, leading to the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which received royal assent on 28 August 1833 and took effect on 1 August 1834.
This act formally abolished slavery in most British colonies, freeing over 800,000 enslaved Africans in the Caribbean, South Africa, and Canada.
However, the transition was not immediate or fully liberating; the act introduced a system of apprenticeship, requiring formerly enslaved people to work for their former owners for a set period, with the first apprenticeships ending in 1838 and the final ones in 1840.
This system was widely resented and resisted by the formerly enslaved, who protested against its continuation.
The British government compensated slave owners for the loss of their "property" with a sum of £20 million, equivalent to a third of the Treasury’s annual income at the time, a cost that was not fully repaid until 2015.
While the 1833 Act marked the legal end of slavery in most colonies, the British government also played a role in suppressing the international slave trade, using its navy to intercept slave ships, particularly in Brazil and the Caribbean, which helped pressure other nations to end their participation in the trade.
The last British territories to abolish slavery were Nigeria and Bahrain, which occurred by 1937.
