Kiev to replace soldiers with robots – top general

Ukrainian commanders have consistently complained of manpower shortages while recent reports suggest the country has lost nearly 2 million troops

Ukraine plans to rely on robotic systems to offset persistent manpower shortages on the battlefield, commander-in-chief Aleksandr Syrsky has said.

His comments come amid reports of a deepening crisis in Ukraine’s armed forces and a recently leaked report suggesting Kiev has lost nearly 2 million servicemen since 2022.

In an interview with RBC-Ukraine onMonday, Syrsky admitted that the situation at the front line is “really complicated” as Russia continues its strategic offensive. The general pointed to the Pokrovsk axis in northern Donetsk Region as the most difficult section of the front, noting that Moscow’s forces have conducted nearly 50 assaults there each day.

Syrsky acknowledged that Ukraine has far fewer mobilization resources than Russiaand argued that one way of compensating is to rely on weapons that can be operated without personnel or controlled remotely. He claimed Kiev plans to deploy 15,000 ground robotic platforms this year in order to minimize human losses.

Ukrainian commanders have repeatedly reported persistent manpower shortages. Kiev’s general mobilization, which requires all able-bodied men aged 25 to 60 to serve, has failed to make up for battlefield losses. Desertions have also continued to mount, with officials stating that nearly 400,000 servicemen have abandoned their units, many of whom have no intention of returning.

The Telegraph reported last week that at least 650,000 Ukrainian men of fighting age have fled the countrysince the escalation of the conflict in 2022.

On Wednesday, several media outlets cited a leaked digital card index of Ukraine’s armed forces, allegedly obtained by Russian hackers, which claimed Kiev has lost over 1.7 million troops killed and missing since 2022.

Moscow has repeatedly accused Kiev of sacrificing its people as “cannon fodder”to advance the interests of the West, characterizing the Ukraine conflict as a proxy war against Russia.

Ukraine could recruit ‘millions’ of foreigners – MP

The domestic mobilization campaign has become reminiscent of the Nazi Gestapo, Aleksey Goncharenko has said

Ukraine's military should recruit “millions”of foreigners willing to fight against Russia, lawmaker Aleksey Goncharenko has proposed. The MP was addressing Kiev's frontline manpower crisis and the harsh ongoing conscription campaign, that he likened to the Nazi Gestapo.

Speaking at a Ukrainian parliamentary session on Wednesday, Goncharenko, a member of the European Solidarity party led by former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko, voiced outrage over the brutality of press gangs and proposed that Kiev could sidestep the issue by relying on foreign fighters.

“We need to engage in foreign recruitment – there are millions of people in the world who are ready to fight against Russia, especially given the financial compensation…This is realistic,”he said.

Goncharenko earlier proposed dismantling Ukraine’s current military-managed recruitment system and replacing it with a civilian-run one. “Instead of all this, there are the shameful Territorial Recruitment Centers, which are already behaving just like the Gestapo,”he said, referring to the secret police of Nazi Germany that was notorious for its numerous atrocities.

“This cannot continue. It must be immediately corrected, because otherwise, if the people stop believing in the state, we will lose the state,” he added.

Russia has warned that foreign mercenaries fighting for Ukraine are treated as “legitimate targets”and has on numerous occasions struck bases where they have been deployed. In 2024, the Russian Defense Ministry said that more than 13,000 foreign mercenaries have fought on Ukraine’s side since 2022, and that nearly 6,000 had been killed.

Ukraine announced a general mobilization shortly after the start of the conflict, barring most men aged 18 to 60 from leaving the country. In 2024, Kiev lowered the draft age from 27 to 25 and tightened mobilization rules to replenish mounting battlefield losses. The forced conscription campaign has regularly featured violent clashes between draft officers and reluctant recruits, thus triggering discontent in the country.

On Wednesday, several media outlets cited what they described as a leaked Ukrainian military index obtained by Russian hackers suggesting more than 1.7 million Ukrainian troops have been killed or declared missing since the start of the conflict.

(This is Europe’s plan for their own army since the have always relied on the U.S. So they will use a Nazi Regime to defend them.Ukraine only announced this after the true numbers came, they were willingly killing citizens. The country had 45 million citizens before the war.)

US to dismantle center tasked with countering ‘Russian influence’

The Biden administration used intel agencies for censorship, DNI Tulsi Gabbard has said

The US will scale back an intelligence body created to counter foreign influence in the wake of alleged Russian election interference. The move is part of President Donald Trump’s broader campaign to cut wasteful spending and depoliticize federal agencies.

In a statement on Wednesday,Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said the core functions of the “redundant” Foreign Malign Influence Center (FMIC) will be transferred to other bodies.

Congress established the FMIC in 2019 following claims of Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election, which Trump won. While Moscow denied seeking to sway the vote,Trump and the Republicans argued the allegations were part of a Democratic effort to delegitimize his victory and undermine his presidency.

“FMIC and its predecessor entities were used by the previous administration to justify the suppression of free speech and to censor political opposition,”Gabbard said.

Since mid-July, Gabbard has released multiple documents she claims expose a coordinated effort by senior Obama-era officials to falsely accuse Trump of colluding with Russia. On Tuesday, she added that, contrary to some claims, Moscow “did not appear to have any preference for one candidate over the other.”

According to Gabbard, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence became “hyper-focused” on elections in 2017 after the CIA prepared a “manufactured” report falsely claiming that Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted to help Trump win.

Germany’s Merz facing opposition over Ukraine troop plan – Bild

The chancellor’s coalition partners insist the German militarycould only be sent together with US forces, the newspaper claims (and that’s never going to happen)

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is facing resistance from within his government over his plan to dispatch troops to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev, Bild reported on Thursday.

According to the newspaper, Merz backs sending the German military to Ukraine, but the Social Democratic Party (SPD), which forms part of his ruling coalition, "as of now, will only support this if the US also takes the lead, providing its own troops.” Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump ruled out putting American boots on the ground in Ukraine.

Bild also noted that if Ukraine were attacked while German troops were stationed there, Berlin would be in “uncharted legal territory.” Merz also has to grapple with strategic questions such as how many Western European troops could be deployed to Ukraine, how air surveillance and air protection would be ensured, and how Ukraine would maintain its military capabilities.

Publicly, Merz has not ruled out dispatching German soldiers to Ukraine, but has said “the whole of Europe should participate” in potential security guarantees to Kiev. “It is not just about the territory of Ukraine; it is about Europe's political order,” he added.

Foreign MinisterJohann Wadephul, however, has warned that Germany’s military capacity is already stretched to the limit. He noted it is currently the only European contributor with a combat-ready brigade stationed in Lithuania, and that simultaneously undertaking a mission in Ukraine “would probably be too much for us.”

Although Trump has ruled out deploying US ground troops to Ukraine, he has signaled willingness to offer an air support framework if Moscow and Kiev reach an agreement to end hostilities.

The Bild report follows the summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last week, as well as a visit by Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky and several European leaders, including Merz, to Washington on Monday, with talks centered on settling the Ukraine conflict.

Russia has warned that any NATO or Western troop presence in Ukraine would be absolutely “unacceptable,” regardless of its form or potential scenarios.

(They never listen to Russia says and repeats numerous times, for close to 35 years, no NATO troops in Ukraine.I believe anons statements from years before are true, Germany will never let go of the idea of Nazism and would still do it if they could.)

Ukrainian arrested in Italy over Nord Stream sabotage – German prosecutors

The suspect is said to have been on board the sailboat used to blow up part of the pipeline bringing Russian gas to Western Europe in 2022

Italian police have arrested a Ukrainian man who it is claimed is suspected of involvement in the bombing of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, German prosecutors reported on Thursday.

The man, referred to only as Sergey K, was detained near Rimini on the basis of a European arrest warrant.German investigators believe he led a unit that blew up sections of the pipelines in September 2022.

The attacks, which ruptured both the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in the Baltic Sea, were, improbably, initially blamed on Russian operatives. But German prosecutors later traced a rented sailing yacht to the operation and linked it to Ukrainian nationals.

Investigators say Sergey K was part of a group that placed explosives on the pipelines near the island of Bornholm in September 2022. The accused was allegedly one of the coordinators of the operation. He and his accomplices are said to have used a sailing yacht that departed from the German city of Rostock. The vessel had previously been rented from a German company through intermediaries using forged identification documents.

“After being transferred from Italy, the accused will be brought before the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice,” according to the statement by the prosecutor's office.

Germany’s Federal Prosecutor General has reportedly been investigating the blasts for more than two years on suspicion of sabotage and causing explosives to be detonated. The explosions were seen at the time as an attack on critical energy infrastructure and a stark example of the rising economic fallout of the Ukraine conflict.

In 2023, veteran investigative journalist Seymour Hersh published a report claiming that then-US President Joe Biden had given the order to destroy Nord Stream. According to an informed source who talked to the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, the explosives had been planted by US Navy divers a few months earlier under the cover of a NATO exercise. The White House denied the report at the time, calling it “complete fiction.”

(I wonder if Trump has discussed Nord Stream with Putin. Germany is keeping this alive, because it protects Scholz because he approved Bidan Admin to do it. That’s my theory.)

US push to build naval drone fleet ‘not going well’ – Reuters

The Pentagon program has faced a series of setbacks, multiple sources have told the agency

The US plan to build a fleet of naval drones to potentially counter China is “not going well” and has been marred with technical issues and management turmoil, Reuters has reported, citing a dozen informed sources.

US President Donald Trump has named drone capabilities as a top priority for the military, with almost $5 billion allocated for naval autonomous systems in his ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ on federal spending. The Pentagon aims to arm itself with numerous unmanned boats, which cost several million dollars each and can operate in swarms without human command. The drones are seen as vital for protecting Taiwan in case of a possible military confrontation with Beijing.

The program, however, has faced a series of setbacks, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

It recalled an incident in July during a test off the coast of California, in which one autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) suddenly stalled and another smashed into it, vaulting over the deck and crashing back into the water.

During another failed test a few weeks prior, an autonomous boat accelerated unexpectedly, capsizing its support vessel and throwing its captain overboard, Reuters reported. The captain remained unharmed, it added.

The blunders resulted from a combination of software failures and human error, including breakdowns in communication between onboard systems and external autonomous software, one source explained.

Since the latest incident, the Pentagon has indefinitely halted a contract of almost $20 million with one of the firms providing autonomous software for the vessels, sources told the agency.

In May, the US Navy’s main ASV procurement unit, the Program Executive Office Unmanned and Small Combatants (PEO USC), had its chief, Rear Admiral Kevin Smith, sacked due to loss of confidence.

According to Reuters’ sources, US Deputy Secretary of Defense Stephen Feinberg grilled Navy officials last month, saying he was unimpressed by some of the acquired naval drone capabilities and questioning their cost-effectiveness.

The PEO USC was recently placed under review due to its failures and could face restructuring or a shutdown, four people familiar with the matter claimed.

(Maybe Trump can work with Russia for our drone development. The U.S. is far behind on tech in military.)

Ukraine ‘doesn’t need’ China – Zelensky

Beijing has positioned itself as neutral while refusing to support sanctions against Russia

Ukraine does not need security guarantees from China because Beijing failed to prevent or stop the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, Vladimir Zelensky has said.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, the Ukrainian leader commented on potential security guarantees Kiev could receive from its partners once the hostilities with Russia are over. He noted, however, that he does not want to see China as one of the guarantors upholding peace.

“First, China did not help us stop this war from the very beginning,” Zelensky said, adding that Beijing “did nothing” to prevent the secession of Crimea, which overwhelmingly voted to join Russia in a public referendum in 2014. He went on to accuse China of sitting back when the conflict escalated in 2022.

“That is why we do not need guarantors who did not help Ukraine then, when it was truly necessary after February 24 [2022],” he said.

His remarks came afterRussian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov suggested that Moscow supported robust security guarantees for Ukraine while not ruling out that they could be provided by members of the UN Security Council, including Western countries, as well as China. He stressed, however, that these guarantees should be “equal” and never be aimed against Russia.

China has positioned itself as a neutral party in the Ukraine conflict and has refused to join sanctions against Russia. It has called on both sides to hold peace talks while suggesting that one of the reasons for hostilities has been NATO expansion. In 2023, Beijing released a 12-point memorandum calling for a ceasefire, resumption of peace talks, protection of civilians, nuclear safety, and an end to unilateral sanctions.

Following the summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, in Alaska last week, China said it “supports all efforts conducive to the peaceful resolution of the [Ukraine] crisis,” adding that it “is glad to see Russia and the United States maintaining contact, [and] improving relations.”

Zelensky says meeting with Putin ‘definitely not in Moscow’

The Russian president has signaled he is ready to meet the Ukrainian leader, but only after tangible progress is made in negotiations

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has ruled out meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, saying he prefers talks to be held in a “neutral” part of Europe.

Speculation about a possible Putin-Zelensky meeting arose after the Russian president met with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, last week in Alaska. Trump later met with Zelensky and EU leaders, followed by a 40-minute call with Putin, and posted on Truth Social that he had “begun the arrangements for a meeting [between Putin and Zelensky] at a location to be determined.” Media reports claimed Putin had suggested Moscow as a venue.

“There can definitely be no meeting in Moscow,” Zelensky told reporters on Thursday, without elaborating. He said he wants the US to coordinate the negotiations with Russia, but also would like Kiev’s European allies involved. “I would like Europe to be present as well. The negotiations must take place in a neutral part of Europe,” he said, suggesting Austria, Türkiye, and Switzerland as options.

The Kremlin has not confirmed any plans for a Putin-Zelensky meeting, but Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday that Moscow was ready to raise the status of its delegation-level peace negotiations with Ukraine. Lavrov said Putin raised the idea after his call with Trump.

Putin has not ruled out meeting Zelenskybut has insisted that it could only come after the negotiation process has produced tangible progress. Moscow has also questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy, noting his term as president has expired and warning any deals he signs could be overturned by his successor.

Trump said this week he preferred that Putin and Zelensky meet before a potential three-way summit be held. He called his talks with Putin in Alaska “very productive” and said a settlement was now more realistic.

Media reports have claimed Washington is planning a three-way summit between Putin, Trump, and Zelensky in Hungary. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto confirmed on Thursday that Budapest would be a realistic venue, including for a potential one-on-one between Putin and Zelensky, arguing Hungary is the only Western country that has maintained a “fair, mutually respectful” relationship with all sides. Zelensky, however, dismissed Hungary as a venue, citing its efforts to block EU military aid to Ukraine.

(With all the times Zelenskyy has said their only goal is to kill Putin, it makes sense to meet in a neutral place. I doubt Putin will meet with Zelensky for a long time.)

US changes stance on 2008 Russia-Georgia war

Washington has refused to condemn Moscow at the UN

The US has for the first time refused to endorse a condemnation of Russia for the 2008 war with Georgia.

Following a closed-door session of the UN Security Council on Monday, Denmark, France, Greece, the UK, and Sloveniaissued a statement denouncing Russia for the “brutal invasion” of the South Caucasus country 17 years ago. The US did not sign the statement, despite having done so in the past.

On August 7, 2008,under orders from staunchly pro-Western President Mikhail Saakashvili, the Georgian army invaded the breakaway region of South Ossetia, shelled its capital Tskhinval, and attacked a base of Russian peacekeepers.

Russian forces pushed the Georgian troops back, and a French-mediated ceasefire was reached on August 16. That same month, Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, another of Georgia’s former regions.

Although Saakashvili insisted that Russia had attacked first, an EU fact-finding mission led by Swiss diplomat Heidi Tagliavini found no evidence to support his claim, confirming that “open hostilities began with a large-scale Georgian military operation” against Tskhinval, starting “with a massive Georgian artillery attack.”

Tina Bokuchava, head of Saakashvili’s United National Movement, criticized Washington’s refusal to condemn Russia, calling it “proof that Georgian diplomacy is dead.”She blamed the ruling Georgian Dream party for souring relations with the US.(The Dream Party loves Trump and America, the rulers loved Bidan and Nuland. And how does that have anything to do with a war from 2008. False History is what Europe does, blaming everything on Russia)

US President Donald Trump has broken the previous administration’s diplomatic boycott of Russia and has sought to mediate an end to the Ukraine conflict. He met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last week for the first time since 2019 as part of his efforts to push forward the negotiations.

RAY McGOVERN:Trump & the Seven Dwarfs

August 19, 2025

The Dwarfs had to slink away. Will they, at long last, tell Zelensky they cannot back up their rhetoric with the needed arms and financial support?

By Ray McGovern

Special to Consortium News

I shall not make the de-rigueur disclaimer lest anyone infer that I think President Donald Trump is Snow White. Nor do I feel a need to assure readers that I am not “in Putin’s pocket.” In the tradition of a “current intelligence” analyst, I shall simply “call ‘em like I see ‘em.” And there are lots of dots to put together.

It has been clear since the Alaska summit that Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have come to an overall agreement on Ukraine and that it is now being fleshed out in plain sight. And both are acutely aware of the many forces wishing to sabotage moves toward a negotiated settlement.

They have agreed to call it “Biden’s war” and then to conduct themselves as though they have bigger fish to fry –first and foremost improving U.S.-Russia relations.

Why have so many observers been unable to grasp the significance of this key sentence in the first paragraph of the readout from the Aug. 6 Putin-Witkoff meeting – the meeting that set these hopeful events in train?

“Once again, it was noted that Russia-US relations could be placed on a totally different, mutually beneficial footing, which would be in stark contrast with the way these relations have evolved in recent years.”(Emphasis added.)

(Pardon the pedantry, but it is not widely known that the Kremlin’sRussian-to-English translator erred in using the subjunctive could. The word in the Russian readout is stronger; it means can– the indicative, not the subjunctive mood.) This is, well, indicative.

The shared, overriding objective to improve bilateral ties came through clearly both at the summit on Friday and at the “March of the Gnomes” on Monday when seven European leaders arrived at the White House to back Volodymyr Zelensky (no offense to garden gnomes – or dwarfs).

Enroute Alaska

On Air Force One, Trump told Fox’s Bret Baier, “I won’t be happy if I walk away without some form of a ceasefire.” Nyet, was Putin’s answer.

Perhaps the president thought he could work his persuasive powers on Putin one-on-one and change his mind.More likely, Trump knew his gambit had zero prospect of success, and merely wanted to be able to tell the foot-draggers later that he had thrown one last Hail Mary pass, but in vain.

Just a few hours later Trump wrote on truthsocial:

“It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up.”

The New York Times and other media were quick to point out that Trump was “siding with Putin.”

Maps … and Charts

While Putin used the Alaska summit to make clear Russia’s core interests on Ukraine and to argue that he had no option other than to invade,it is a safe bet that he also showed Trump a map depicting the “order of battle;” that is, the disposition of forces along the contact line and in reserve.

I can also envision Putin suggesting to Trump that he fire whoever told him in January that “almost a million Russian Soldiers have been killed” and that the Russian economy is in deep trouble.

This morning Trump hinted that Russia should be allowed to hold onto the territoryit has occupied in Ukraine, a concept so far anathema to Zelensky and most of the European leaders.

THE Map

“The Ukrainian soldiers were brave as hell because it’s fighting a force that’s much, much bigger and clearly much more powerful,” Trump said of the Russian military … “And you know, it’s not like they’ve stopped. If you, I assumeyou’ve all seen the map, you know, a big chunk of territory is taken, and that territory has been taken.

“Now they’re talking about Donbas. ButDonbas, right now, as you know,is 79 percent owned and controlled by Russia,” Trump added. “So they understand that.”

Zelensky and the Seven Dwarfs

The Dwarfs had to slink away. Will they, at long last, tell Zelensky they cannot back up their rhetoric with the needed arms and financial support? It will take a while, but in the end they will have to do so.

The end is near.

Visualizing Federal Layoffs Under Trump

Does cutting government headcount make it work more effectively?

From firing inspectors-general, to mass layoffs in the Department of Education, the federal workforce is being scaled back.

So far, the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of 12 of these terminations, while scores of workers are leaving voluntarily.

This graphic, via Visual Capitalist's Dorothy Neufeld, shows Trump’s federal layoffs, based on data from CNN.

Ranked: Federal Layoffs by Agency in 2025

In the table below, we show more than 51,000 federal job cuts as of July 14, 2025:

So far, 34 agencies or sub-agencies have made job cuts either through layoffs or notices of termination.

As a result, Washington D.C. is home to the highest number of layoffs in the country in 2025,with six agencies seeing at least 80% of their workforce eliminated.

Most notably, USAID’s closure resulted in about 10,000 layoffs, with 83% of its programs being shut down.

Meanwhile, the Small Business Administration cut about 42% of its workforce, equal to approximately 2,700 employees.

Even more staggeringly, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) cut 86.4% of its staff.

For perspective, the federal headcount stood at about three million employees in early 2025, with 50% working in the sector for more than 10 years.

Overall, the U.S. ranks 11th out of 80 countries by share of government workers per capita, based on 2023 figures.

Watch: Man Arrested In UK For Saying "We Love Bacon"

Authored by Steve Watson via Modernity.news,

A British man has been arrested for saying “we love bacon” while protesting the building of a proposed giant mosque.

The Telegraph reports that the protest occurred at the site of planned super mosque in the Lake District, which is populated by an almost 100% white population.

The report further notes that the 23-year-old man, was not otherwise being disruptive, causing any damage or being in any way violent.

The arresting police officer claims that the grounds for the detainment were “racial abuse.”

Telegraph writer Isabel Oakeshott notes:

Of course Muslims don’t eat pork. As a result, they cannot share this particular delight with the rest of us. However, despite a steady rise in our own Muslim population, the UK remains a Christian country. Supposedly, we also enjoy free speech. Why then did the unfortunate father find himself frogmarched away from the protest by two police officers?

Saying ‘We love bacon’ is simply a truism. We British do love it, and there is nothing wrong with saying so.

As for remarks about bacon near a religious site or in the company of Muslims, they hardly constitute public disorder, still less ‘racial abuse,’ as the officer who arrested him can be heard suggesting.

The South Lakes Islamic Centre, often referred to as the Kendal mosque due to its proximity to the town of Kendal in Cumbria, is a £2.5 million facility under construction in Dalton-in-Furness on the edge of the Lake District.

Construction began in March 2025, with reports indicating that the structure is now nearing completion despite challenges like suppliers refusing to provide materials amid public backlash.

Opposition to the project has been vocal, with groups staging protests at the site since last month. Critics cite concerns over increased noise, traffic, and cultural impact in a rural area, but a core argument revolves around the region’s demographics: the Lake District and surrounding Cumbria have a Muslim population of approximately 0.4%, or around 2,000 people across the county, raising questions about the necessity of what some dub a “mega mosque” in such a sparsely populated Muslim area.

Detractors suggest it’s disproportionate, especially with nearby facilities like mosques in Carlisle, Penrith, and Whitehaven, and speculate it could signal plans for larger-scale housing or migration to the area.

As we’ve previously highlighted, the Lake District is just one sleepy area of the UK where the government has decided to drop hundreds of illegal immigrants into small villages without notifying or warning residents.

Many who shared the video of the man’s arrest on social media suggested it is yet another example of the ‘two tier’ society that has emerged in the UK.

Others took an opportunity to express their right to… like bacon.
