Happy National Dog Day!
As mascots in the Navy, some dogs were issued special ID cards. This pup named Apache had the rate of "Dog1c" (Dog First Class). Note the signature with a paw print and fire hydrant.

#OTD in 1988, the Peruvian submarine BAP Pacocha (formerly USS Atule) sank after being rammed by a Japanese fishing trawler. Four men died immediately and many more would have drowned if not for an officer who managed to overcome high water pressure to close the torpedo room's hatch. The officer later said he had prayed to Sister Marija Petkovic for help and then saw a "brilliant light" before the hatch closed. The Catholic Church declared the incident a miracle. 41 of 49 crewmen survived the collision and sinking.
