ONLY BEGOTTEN - Tough Bible Stuff

The Greek word for "only begotten" is monogenes. Here I will look at Michael Heiser's theory about the origin of that Greek word. The argument given on pg 36 is weak. Heiser says the Greek word monogenes is not from mono + gennao (only beget, only bear), but from mono + genos (one of a […]

In Matt 1:20 the gospel writer describes Mary’s pregnancy to Joseph this way: “do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” The wording is unusual for several reasons, most notably that the Greek verb translated “conceived” in the ESV means “fathered” or “begotten,” something the Old Testament never has the Spirit doing elsewhere and only rarely has God performing in any context. In this episode of the podcast, we talk about Matthew’s word choice in this verse and its theological implications.

The literal meaning of Mahayana is "Great Vehicle" (and sometimes called quaintly in Chinese the "Big Boat"). A "bigger boat" is made necessary by the teaching that "everyone's a Buddha" and that laypeople are as eligible for enlightenment as monastics.

A turtle ship (Korean: 거북선; RR: geobukseon; Korean pronunciation: [kʌ.buk.sʌn]) was a type of warship that was used by the Korean Joseon Navy from the early 15th century up until the 19th century. They were used alongside the panokseon warships in the fight against invading Japanese fleets. The ship's name derives from its covering that was said to resemble a turtle shell. Some historians have described it as a very early type of ironclad though the historical evidence for this is uncertain.

History

The first references to older, first-generation turtle ships, known as gwiseon (귀선; 龜船, Korean pronunciation: [kɥisʌn]), come from 1413 and 1415 records in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, which mention a mock battle between a gwiseon and a Japanese warship. However, these early turtle ships soon fell out of use as Korea's naval preparedness decreased during a long period of relative peace.[1]

Turtle ships participated in the war against Japanese naval forces supporting Toyotomi Hideyoshi's attempts to conquer Korea from 1592 to 1598.[2] Korean Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who won all battles against the Japanese Navy, is credited with designing the improved turtle ship. From their first appearance in the Battle of Sacheon, his turtle contributed to winning 16 battles against the Japanese fleet under the command of various Daimyos primarily from Western Japan, though under the command of Wŏn Kyun the Joseon Navy suffered a devastating defeat in the Battle of Chilcheollyang.[3] It is unknown precisely how many of Yi's Turtle Ships were constructed.[4] The cost of one of these armored warships would have been high, especially if the deck was lined with hexagonal iron plates as some sources suggest.[5]
