The motive: The murder was committed during a robbery. Approximately $94,000 in cash and blank checks were stolen from the payroll office.
The perpetrator: Petty Officer 1st Class Ruben Colon was a career counselor on the ship. He was arrested after investigators traced a large cash deposit to a bank safe deposit box he had rented.
The outcome: Colon was found guilty of murder, kidnapping, and robbery in July 1988. The jury found him not guilty of premeditated murder, but guilty of murder during a robbery. He was sentenced to life in prison
