Police still searching for attacker, CBS reports

Three sources familiar with the investigation into the shooting have told CBS News, the BBC's US partner, that a search for the suspect is still ongoing.

A further two law enforcement sources said that police have not yet declared the scene safe for the public.

Utah Valley University (UVU) released a statement asking those "still on campus to secure in place until police officers can safely escort them off campus".

UVU police said they are currently going "building to building" to conduct the evacuation.

Somber, silent mood as White House flags lowered

It's become very quiet - and very somber - at the White House following President Trump's announcement that Charlie Kirk has died.

Just a few moments ago, members of the White House press pool gathered outside after being told that the American flags at the White House were being lowered to half-staff.

It was very quiet outside when that announcement came through, and the only sounds I heard for a few moments were the shutters of cameras and a few reporters speaking softly into cameras, or amongst themselves.

The flag at the North Lawn of the White House came down at exactly 17:20pm EST. The flag on the South Lawn has also been lowered.

There are few staffers still immediately visible in the offices.

Earlier, there was a sense of clear, visceral sense of shock among them. Kirk had close ties with the president, his family and members of the administration - and many of even the younger, junior staffers are members of his enormous, intensely engaged audience of young US conservatives.

Obama offers condolences to Kirk's wife and children

Former President Barack Obama has posted on X, offering his condolences to Kirk's family.

"We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy," he writes.

"Michelle and I will be praying for Charlie’s family tonight, especially his wife Erika and their two young children."

'There was no security,' says eyewitness

We're now hearing from another eyewitness who was at Utah Valley University where Charlie Kirk was speaking before he was shot.

Adam Bartholomew says he was at the event interviewing counter protestors that were speaking against Charlie Kirk's presence on campus.

He says he heard a shot and everybody dropped to the floor.

"There was confusion and people started scrambling for the exits," he tells the BBC.

Bartholomew says there were about 50 or 60 people protesting against Kirk.

Prior to the shooting he says the mood at the event was "great" and people were chanting "U.S.A".

The anti-Kirk protestors were chanting in response with profanities against Kirk, he says

"Several people are in tears," he says of the atmosphere after the shooting.

Bartholomew says he was "surprised" that there was no security at the event. "Nobody stopped me or searched my bag."(WTF?)

Students ran into campus sushi restaurant to escape danger

From his restaurant, Sin Maran didn't hear the shooting - but he saw scores of students fleeing the scene.

"The location is very close to me and then we saw people running," he tells me.

Maran, who owns the university campus sushi restaurant Fishbone, says one person ran into his store to hide and told him that a speaker had been shot.

Video shared with the BBC shows dozens of students sheltering in the restaurant after the shooting.

Maran says when he learned of the shooting, he "turned off the lights everywhere". After 30 minutes, he got a notification to evacuate the campus.

Shot was fired from roof of campus building, source says

We earlier reported that the shot seems to have been fired from an "elevated position" in an academic building - either from a rooftop or open window.

A source now tells our US partner, CBS,that the attacker appears to have fired from the roof of the school's Losee Center.

Trump advisers react to news of Kirk's death

Secretary of State MarcoRubio said he is "heartbroken" and "outraged", calling his death an "assassination". "Charlie Kirk's commitment to America's future generations and sense of patriotism will resonate for decades to come," he said.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller called Kirk "the most extraordinary husband and father".

"America has lost one of its greatest champions," Miller said."All of us must now dedicate ourselves to defeating the evil that stole Charlie from this world."

Subject of shooting in custody - FBI

FBI Director Kash Patel says the subject of the shooting today is now in custody.

"The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody. Thank you to the local and state authorities in Utah for your partnership with @fbi, external.We will provide updates when able," he says.

The Cops and FBI getting so him soon, is likely because of this:

I think the theory of the second guy that asked questions of Charlies, on tranny's and gun violence, was right, he conspired with another for a dramatic death.

When the kid asked the second question and Charlie answered, right when he answered the question, without even couple of seconds, almost immediately the gun shot hit him.

I had to be a team of two or more of them, that had planned this and timed this at exact moments. Right when Charlie finished the answered he was shot.

==If that is true, it would have been super easy to get that "kid asking the questions", to break, and since he was a radical, hebprobably broke down and cried right away. And he told the FBI and Police how the two or more radicals set this up.

BTW, this shooting was not just about Kirk being dead, it was done to scare the students on the Campus to listen to any conservative on the campus, or deter them from being interested in current events or politics.

The whole point was to try and destroy any truth being told on campuses or schools. and scaring the students so they never get involved in saving the country and youth.

The Jewish state’s airstrikes on Doha failed to hit the targeted leaders of the Palestinian militant group

Israel is determined to kill Hamas leaders wherever they reside and will continue its efforts until they are all dead, Israeli Ambassador to the United States Yechiel Leiter told Fox News on Tuesday. (9/9/25, yesterday)

Earlier in the day, Israeli airstrikes hit a residential building in Doha, Qatar, targeting senior figures of Hamas’ political wing. The group said its officials survived, while the attack has been criticized by the White House and condemned by Qatar.

“If we didn’t get them this time, we’ll get them the next time,” Leiter said.

The ambassador described Hamas as “enemies of Western civilization”and argued that Israel’s actions were reshaping the Middle East in ways “moderate” states understood and valued.

“Right now, we may be subject to a little bit of criticism. They’ll get over it,” he said of the Arab countries.

US President Donald Trump said that while dismantling Hamas was a legitimate goal, striking a US ally undermined both American and Israeli interests.

Qatar, which hosts Hamas officials as part of its role as a mediator, said a Qatari security officer was among six people killed in the Israeli strike.

Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani has denounced the attack as a “heinous crime” and an “act of aggression,” while Doha’s Foreign Ministry has accused Israel of “state terrorism.”

Israel has vowed to hunt down Hamas leaders, who it blames for the deadly October 2023 attack which was launched from Gaza into southern Israel.The ambassador vowed that those responsible “are not going to survive,” no matter where they are.

Israel’s military response has left at least 64,000 dead in Gaza, according to local authorities. Critics have accused West Jerusalem of committing genocide by rendering the blockaded enclave uninhabitable and worsening famine conditions through restrictions on food aid.
