It's become very quiet - and very somber - at the White House following President Trump's announcement that Charlie Kirk has died.

Just a few moments ago, members of the White House press pool gathered outside after being told that the American flags at the White House were being lowered to half-staff.

It was very quiet outside when that announcement came through, and the only sounds I heard for a few moments were the shutters of cameras and a few reporters speaking softly into cameras, or amongst themselves.

The flag at the North Lawn of the White House came down at exactly 17:20pm EST. The flag on the South Lawn has also been lowered.

There are few staffers still immediately visible in the offices.

Earlier, there was a sense of clear, visceral sense of shock among them. Kirk had close ties with the president, his family and members of the administration - and many of even the younger, junior staffers are members of his enormous, intensely engaged audience of young US conservatives.

'There was no security,' says eyewitness

We're now hearing from another eyewitness who was at Utah Valley University where Charlie Kirk was speaking before he was shot.

Adam Bartholomew says he was at the event interviewing counter protestors that were speaking against Charlie Kirk's presence on campus.

He says he heard a shot and everybody dropped to the floor.

"There was confusion and people started scrambling for the exits," he tells the BBC.

Bartholomew says there were about 50 or 60 people protesting against Kirk.

Prior to the shooting he says the mood at the event was "great" and people were chanting "U.S.A".

The House of Representatives burst into chaos as Speaker Mike Johnson attempted to lead a prayer for Charlie Kirk, the late father of two, who was shot dead in Utah on Wednesday.

Then it got ugly. Some Democrats, clearly against the request for prayer, began cheering in unison ‘No!’

One unidentified Democrat in the room shouted out something about a shooting that happened in Colorado on Wednesday, seemingly trying to draw a comparison to how there were no prayers offered for that tragedy - which happened within hours of Kirk being shot.

It is unclear exactly which Democrats protested against the prayers for Kirk, however, the cacophony of voices that rang out suggests that it was many, likely around a dozen.

Another unidentified Democrat blurted out: ‘Pass some gun laws!’

The liberal lawmakers’ rejection of the prayer immediately enraged Republicans.

‘You f***ing own this!’ screamed Florida Republican Anna Paulina Luna.

She accused Democrats earlier in the day of being the origin of the violence against Kirk.

‘I am done with the rhetoric this rotten House and corrupt media has caused,’ she posted on X shortly after the news of the shooting broke. ‘Every damn one of you who called us fascists did this.’

Most likely the shooter got on the roof because it was unlocked for him, as he was on the 3rd floor. Now consider that it was an inside job to do this. Therefor, the sniper is probably being protected by staff members and could possibly be still in the building, either hiding in a closet but most likely hiding above the roof tiles. FBI needs to scan RF the ceiling and lift those tiles. Think about it, he would be captured by video if he walked down, so he probably has supplies and is close to a bathroom ceiling. This happened last week with regard to Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., as Secretary of Health and Human Services.

He went before a Senate committee to testify about goings-on. He could hardly get a word in. The Democrats called him a liar, a charlatan, a quack, a danger to the lives of children. Republicans weren’t much better.

He handled himself well given the situation. When he said that we have no idea how many people died of COVID, he was telling the truth. The death-certificate misclassification was rampant, and the PCR tests were wildly inaccurate, failing to distinguish between exposure and sickness. It was treated as a gotcha moment as if he did not know his stuff.

It was the same with the vaccine. Kennedy took the COVID shot off the recommended schedule for children because it was determined to be ineffective, unnecessary, and has a poor safety profile. The Democrats said he was putting the nation’s children at risk. Then the media got involved. It was all the usual suspects with commentaries nearly identical: dogmatic, extreme, vociferous, and wicked.
