I work on youtube and this is my latest leak.

1: We just put a recaptcha on about 70% of trump videos, out of ideological reasons because youtube hates trump

2: About 50% of detected VPN's will be asked for a login if they try to see a trump video. This will be blamed on abuse and security but in reality its a technological psyop against viewers. Often we blame it on "age verification" when its in reality simply deboosting ideological exposure. As soon as anyone in media picks this up the parameters for "login requirement" are decreased in order to counter suspicions from the users. Pretty much 99% of all resources are dedicated towards political and ideological censorship at this point. Youtube can be seen as Censortube now judging from the resources alone and from the activity on the versioncontrol repos. I'll maybe release the source code from the backend services in the following weeks and you will see the censorship yourself.

3: In a week I will release all the internal mails from the red teams and blue teams on youtube that manage the clusters. Most of these involve anti-trump hatred and literally chicom subversion propaganda. Almost all of them are pro-hillary or pro-biden activists judging from these mails.

4: The entire "Alphabet" concept is a military classified DARPA psyop. Several of agents from this "alphabet" corporations are getting paid to spam pro-government slides on social media. “Despicable.”

That’s how one Columbine survivor framed some of the anti-prayer rhetoric coming from politicians and public figures after the horrific shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis.

Evan Todd, who was shot and injured during the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, said many of those speaking ill of thoughts and prayers fail to understand the importance of invocations.

“It’s heartbreaking,” Todd said in response to those decrying thoughts and prayers. “I think [it’s] despicable. I think it’s revealing of the people who are doing it.”

Todd said his own story is evidence of just how powerful prayer can be in the wake of tragedy. He was in the library on April 20, 1999, where most of the carnage took place. Two of his peers killed 12 students and a teacher and eventually turned the guns on themselves.

“I have my own story and my going through Columbine and surviving,” he said. “I just know what prayers — and thoughts and prayers — did in my life. I’ve seen miracles work. I’ve seen prayers from that very day that have been answered.”

Todd said he found immense comfort in the wake of the shooting knowing that so many people were sending thoughts and prayers.

“I could feel that in my soul,” he said. “It was … uplifting, encouraging. … It made me realize that, although I just saw the most evil and saw death …. I stared death in the face, I could still see the humanity and love that was in the world.”

He continued, “And that was really a good piece of the healing process that got me to realize that … life isn’t all bad.”

Beyond that, Todd, over the years, came to another realization: prayer is a selfless action that devotes time to others — something he truly values as he now reflects on it.

“[It’s amazing] that someone would take a time out of their day and appeal to the Creator of the universe on your behalf,” he said. “And, to me, that was so empowering and gave me so much motivation.”

Todd found himself looking for answers in the wake of the shooting, clinging closer to his Christian faith. Today, he often speaks about biblical truth and morality.

Beyond the personal benefits of prayer, the survivor also expressed worries about the message politicians are sending when they make proclamations that seem to undercut thoughts and prayers.

The thing that just dawned on me on this last horrific tragedy was these politicians are basically saying … ‘Step aside, God, we’ll handle it … from here.'”

Todd believes this mentality of pushing God away and assuming humans have all the answers is exactly what landed America in crisis in the first place.

“Go through modern times, biblical times, whenever someone starts to rely on their own understandings and their own ways, then evil things and horrible things follow,” he said. “Now, more than ever, is the time to turn to God, and pray, and ask for things.”

Todd posited that some politicians take such problematic stances on prayer in order to push what he believes are political messages. He concluded the conversation with heartfelt gratitude for anyone who turned to God on his behalf after he faced the unthinkable.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone who sent thoughts and prayers,” Todd said. “Meant the world.”

The nebula fanning out from the star IRAS 04302+2247 may look like the wings of a butterfly, while the vertical brown stripe down the center may look like the butterfly's body but together they indicate an active planet-forming system. The featured picture was captured recently in infrared light by the Webb Space Telescope. Pictured, the vertical disk is thick with the gas and dust from which planets form. The disk shades visible and (most) infrared light from the central star, allowing a good view of the surrounding dust that reflects out light. In the next few million years, the dust disk will likely fragment into rings through the gravity of newly hatched planets. And a billion years from now, the remaining gas and dust will likely dissipate, leaving mainly the planets like in our Solar System.

8 September 2025 - NASA and NOAA are preparing to launch three spacecraft - IMAP, the Carruthers Geocorona Observatory, and SWFO-L1 - to study the Sun and improve protections against space weather.

All three will travel to the Earth-Sun Lagrange point (L1), about a million miles from Earth, where they can continuously observe solar activity.

NASA’s IMAP mission will map the heliosphere and measure solar wind and energetic particles in near real time. Its data will enhance models that predict hazardous space weather events, which can disrupt satellites, communications, and power systems.

NOAA’s SWFO-L1 will operate as a dedicated space weather observatory. Positioned at L1, it will provide early warnings of solar storms by detecting coronal mass ejections and monitoring the solar wind upstream from Earth.

This near-real-time data will allow NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center to give operators more lead time to safeguard satellites, communications networks, power grids, and other infrastructure from solar-driven disruptions.

The Carruthers Geocorona Observatory will study Earth’s exosphere, the outermost atmospheric layer that plays a critical role in how the planet absorbs and releases energy during solar storms.

Its observations will clarify how the exosphere influences disturbances that can affect satellites, signals, and ground-based technologies.

NASA Launches 2026 Lunabotics Challenge

As college students across the country embark upon the academic year, NASA is giving them something else to look forward to – the agency’s 2026 Lunabotics Challenge.

Teams interested in participating can submit their applications and supporting materials through NASA’s Stem Gateway portal beginning Monday, Sept. 8.

Key dates and challenge details are available in the 2026 Lunabotics Challenge Guidebook. Once all applications and supporting materials are received and evaluated, NASA will notify the selected teams to begin the challenge.

Student teams participating in this year’s challenge will create robots capable of building berms out of lunar regolith – the loose, fragmental material on the Moon’s surface.

Structures like these will be important during lunar missions as blast protection during lunar landings and launches, shading for cryogenic propellant tank farms, radiation shielding around nuclear power plants, and other uses critical to future Moon missions.

“We are excited to continue the Lunabotics competition for universities as NASA develops new Moon to Mars technologies for the Artemis program,” said Robert Mueller, senior technologist at NASA, as well as co-founder and chief judge of the Lunabotics competition. “Excavating and moving regolith is a fundamental need to build infrastructure on the Moon and Mars and this competition creates 21st century skills in the future workforce.”

An in-person qualifying event will be held May 12-17, 2026, at the University of Central Florida’s Space Institute’s Exolith Lab in Orlando.

From this round, the top 10 teams will be invited to bring their robots to the final competition on May 19-21, at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex’s Artemis Arena in Florida, which has an area filled with a lunar regolith simulant.

The team scoring the most points will receive the Lunabotics Grand Prize and participate in an exhibition-style event at NASA Kennedy.

By encouraging innovative construction techniques and assessing student designs and data the same way it does its own prototypes, NASA casts a wider net to find innovative solutions to challenges inherent in future Artemis missions, like developing future lunar excavators, in-situ resource utilization capabilities, and living on the Moon or Mars.

With its multidisciplinary approach, Lunabotics also serves as a workforce pipeline, with teams gaining valuable hands-on experience in computer coding, engineering, manufacturing, fabricating, and other crucial skills, while also receiving technical expertise in space technology development.

NASA’s Lunabotics Challenge, held annually since 2010, is one of several Artemis Student Challenges.

The two-semester competition provides U.S. college and technical school teams an opportunity to design, build, and operate a prototype lunar robot using NASA systems engineering processes.

Competitions help NASA get innovative design and operational data, reduce risks, and cultivate new ideas needed to return to the Moon under the Artemis campaign to prepare for human exploration of Mars.

Moscow is open to welcoming Western businesses back, with certain conditions, the foreign minister has said

Russia has no plans to exact vengeance on Western countries that cut ties and pressured Moscow over the Ukraine conflict, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

Speaking at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations on Monday, Lavrov stressed that Russia did not intend to “take revenge or vent anger” on companies that decided to support Western governments in their push to support Kiev and impose economic sanctions on Moscow, adding that hostility is generally “a poor adviser.”

“When our former Western partners come to their senses… we will not push them away. But we… will take into account that, having fled at the order of their political leaders, they have shown themselves to be unreliable,” the minister said.

According to Lavrov, any future market access would also depend on whether the companies would pose risks to sectors vital to Russia’s economy and security.

The minister stressed that Russia is open to cooperation and has no intention to isolate itself. “We live on one small planet. It was Western-style to build Berlin Walls… We do not want to build any walls,” he said, referring to the symbol of the Cold War that split the German capital from 1961 to 1989.

”We want to work honestly, and if our partners are ready to do the same on the basis of equality and mutual respect, we are open to dialogue with everyone,” he said, pointing to the Alaska Summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, as an example of constructive engagement.

Ukraine’s top general admits Russia’s superiority on front line

Moscow has called for a diplomatic resolution of the conflict, but says it will use military means until the root causes are addressed

The Russian Armed Forces outmatch Kiev’s army in both manpower and equipment, Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Aleksandr Syrsky has said.

His remarks come after months of Ukrainian setbacks on the front lines and mounting struggles to replenish the ranks, with the country’s leader, Vladimir Zelensky, accused of dragging out peace efforts by insisting on Western-backed security guarantees.

In a Telegram post on Monday outlining the situation on the front line, Syrsky said August was a difficult month for Ukraine, acknowledging that Russian troops prevailed in all key areas.

“August 2025 was a month of great trials for our troops,” Syrsky wrote. “ The enemy has a three-fold advantage in troops and means, and in the main areas of concentration of their forces outnumber us four to six times.”

The general said Kiev’s main efforts are currently focused on holding back Russian advances in the Limansky, Dobropolsky, Pokrovsky, and Novopavlovsky areas, which he described as “the most threatening.”

Syrsky nevertheless claimed that Ukrainian forces made limited gains in several areas, insisting they remain on “the right course,” which he defined as seeking “to exhaust and destroy” the Russian forces.

Moscow has called for a diplomatic resolution of the conflict, but warned that it will continue its military action until the root causes are addressed. It insists that a settlement must include Ukrainian neutrality, demilitarization, and recognition of Crimea, Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye regions, which joined Russia following referendums, as Russian territory.

Commenting on the campaign in late August, Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov said the “strategic initiative” now rests “entirely with the Russian troops,” while Ukraine is forced to shift its most combat-ready units “from one crisis direction to another to plug holes.” He stressed that Russian troops are carrying out a “non-stop offensive”across nearly the entire front line, and will continue on this course in the autumn.

Over the weekend, theRussian Defense Ministry announced that its forces launched massive strikes on Ukrainian drone production sites, military air bases in central, southern, and eastern Ukraine, as well as enterprises in Kiev. It reported that all targets were destroyed, including Starlink satellite antennas and heavy copters.

Space-Flown Sacagawea Dollars Drawing Bids in Stack’s Bowers Auction

Online bidding has opened in Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Sept. 12 auction for one of the most unique offerings ever presented on behalf of the United States Mint: eight Sacagawea gold dollars that bridge numismatics with space history.

Announced last month, the auction already has bids ranging from $48,000 to $100,000, but final prices are expected to climb significantly higher, with Stack’s Bowers citing a 1999 value estimate of "approximately $1 million" for each space-flown coin.

Final live bidding begins at 9:00 a.m. PDT (12:00 p.m. EDT) on Sept. 12 at the firm’s Costa Mesa, California headquarters and online.

First Public Offering of Space-Flown Sacagaweas

Originally, 39 Sacagawea dollars were struck in 22-karat gold, but only the 12 finest were selected to fly aboard Space Shuttle Columbia in July 1999; the rest were destroyed. Commanded by Col. Eileen Collins, the mission marked the first shuttle flight led by a woman.

During their 1.8 million-mile journey — about 80 orbits of Earth — these proofs served to raise awareness of the Sacagawea dollar, which entered circulation the following year.

Each coin carries the finely detailed "engraved tail-feathers" reverse, the same design found on the scarce "Cheerios" dollars, which was used only on the earliest Sacagawea coins before being replaced with a lighter design.

"Furthermore, they are the only federally-issued U.S. coins to be struck exclusively for spaceflight," Stack’s Bowers notes.

"While other coins have traveled into space — including the famous ‘space penny’ 1793 Wreath Cent Stack’s Bowers Galleries sold for $82,250 in May 2015 — no others were produced specifically with orbit in mind."

After their return from space, the coins were secured at Fort Knox and displayed publicly just once, at the 2007 ANA World’s Fair of Money in Milwaukee.

With seven now crossing the block, five will remain in the Mint’s collection, with two reserved for museums and special-event displays.

"The remaining five coins will be kept as part of the US Mint’s archived permanent heritage collection," the Mint stated.

"The United States Mint will set aside two coins to entertain requests to display at special events, museums, and other institutions."

All seven have been certified by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as Proof-69 Deep Cameo, with current bids ranging from $65,000 to $100,000.

The First 2025-W Sacagawea Joins the Lineup

Alongside the space-flown group is the first-struck 2025-W Sacagawea dollar in 24-karat gold.

Issued for the series’ 25th anniversary, it is part of the 7,500 half-ounce proof coins released by the U.S. Mint on July 31 and sold out quickly at $2,175 each, though this inaugural piece was held back as the #1 example.

Certified by PCGS as Proof-70 Deep Cameo, it currently carries a bid of $48,000.

Zelensky has insulted Trump. Is he suicidal?

The Ukrainian leader risks alienating the only power besides Moscow with a realistic approach to ending the war

In a weekend interview with ABC News, Ukrainian leader VladimirZelensky accused US President Donald Trump of giving Russian President Vladimir Putin “what he wanted” at the Alaska summit in August.

Whether a passing complaint or a calculated jab, it may come at a steep cost for Zelensky. To suggest that Trump bent to Putin’s will is to imply weakness, and weakness is something Trump never tolerates being accused of. This rhetorical swipe was directed at a man who holds significant sway over the trajectory== of the Russia-Ukraine war. For Zelensky, the insult may prove more damaging than cathartic.

Zelensky overestimates his leverage

Zelensky appears to believe that he has become indispensable in Trump’s calculations, that Washington’s policy revolves around Kiev’s demands.But this overstates his importance. Trump has been consistent about one priority: he wants the war to end, and more than that, he wants the US disentangled from it.His approach reflects the sentiment of much of the American public – weary of sending weapons and aid overseas while domestic problems fester.

By framing Trump’s summit with Putin as a giveaway,Zelensky risks alienating the one Western leader positioned to actually shift the direction of the war. Trump is sensitive to personal slights. For years, allies and adversaries alike have learned that once he feels personally insulted, he hardens, not softens. To tell Trump, in effect, that he’s Putin’s stooge is to court precisely that reaction.

Trump’s realpolitik

=Trump’s efforts at the Alaska summit were grounded in a political reality that Zelensky refuses to acknowledge==. The battlefield is not tilting in Kiev’s favor. Russia’s position, bolstered by sheer resources and strategic depth, is proving resilient. Ukraine’s European backers continue to speak in lofty terms of standing “as long as it takes,” but they lack the power to deliver a Ukrainian victory.

Trump, by contrast, pursued a path that might actually move events forward: direct talks with Russia, engagement on security concerns, and the search for a negotiated framework. It is not an approach designed to satisfy Zelensky and the Europeans’ maximalist goals but rather one rooted in ending an exhausting conflict. To dismiss this effort as capitulation is to ignore that it may be the most realistic option still on the table.

The rhetoric of survival vs. the reality of war

In the same ABC interview, Zelensky says his vision for a Ukrainian victory is Ukraine’s survival.Yet his strategy as evident from his actions appears geared less toward survival and more toward dragging the war on for as long as possible. Each new demand for weapons, each new appeal for escalated sanctions, pushes the conflict forward without changing the battlefield reality of Russia grinding forward toward its objectives – and whatever Zelensky claims, total occupation of Ukraine is not one of those objectives. In the name of “survival,” Ukraine is exhausting its people, its infrastructure, and its economy.

If survival truly is the goal, then ending the war must be the only priority=. Right now, Trump has the best shot at it, because he is realistically engages with the interests of Russia– the side that has the clear upper hand on the battlefield. And Zelensky is pushing that opportunity away.

What the Ukrainians want

The Ukrainian people themselves may be more pragmatic than their leadership.Polling suggests a stark divide: only a small minority – just 11%, according to a recent survey – favor continuing the war without conditions. Meanwhile, overwhelming majorities favor pursuing talks with Russia. This does not mean embracing defeat, but it does mean recognizing that endless escalation is not the preferred path for those getting forcibly conscripted and those seeing their loved ones getting carted off to war.

For Zelensky, this creates a dangerous disconnect. Leaders cannot stay indefinitely ahead of their populations without eroding legitimacy. To ignore the public’s exhaustion while doubling down on maximalist rhetoric risks creating a gulf between the government’s objectives and its people’s endurance.

A smaller stage, a larger risk

By publicly belittling Trump’s diplomacy, Zelensky is shrinking his own stage. He portrays himself as the bulwark of Europe, the last line holding back a supposed “Russian aggression.” Yet without sustained Western backing, Ukraine cannot hold indefinitely. And of all Ukraine’s backers, the US remains the most consequential. Alienating the leader who wants to end US involvement – whether one agrees with his motives or not – is a perilous gamble.

Zelensky’s rhetoric may win applause in certain European capitals. It may even rally a domestic audience for a time.But it risks costing him the one relationship he cannot afford to lose. Trump is not moved by appeals to shared values or by grand speeches about democracy==.

He is moved by respect and recognition of his central role. By suggesting Trump has already caved to Putin, Zelensky undermines both.

Zelensky’s statement reveals a leader more focused on preserving his narrative than recalibrating his strategy. Words matter in diplomacy, especially when those words are aimed at a figure like Donald Trump.In calling Trump weak, Zelensky may have weakened his own hand.

If his true goal is Ukraine’s survival, then it will not be secured through rhetorical bravado. It will require careful diplomacy, acknowledgment of battlefield realities, andavoiding needless insults to the one partner whose departure from the stage could lead to even more disaster for Zelensky’s regime than it has already created for itself.

EXCLUSIVE: Space Development Agency Director Derek Tournear steps down

Derek Tournear, who has headed the Space Development Agency (SDA) almost since its inception, is leaving the agency for academia — telling Breaking Defense in an exclusive interview he’s making the move “at a really good point in the agency.”

“I’ve been with SDA now for over six years. When I first started in this role, I told my wife it would be for two, three years tops. So six years seems to be a good time to call it,” he said. “The agency has matured from from a startup to now a full operational agency.”

Tournear joined SDA as the first permanent director in October 2019, replacing Fred Kennedy who had stood up the agency as part of the Defense Department’s Office of Research and Engineering. Kennedy quit in June 2019 after only four months in the job.

During the wide-ranging interview, Tournear spoke at length about his successor, his tenure at SDA, and what he sees as the agency’s contributions to the Pentagon’s space mission — as well as revealing at least one thing he’d do over if he could.

He will be replaced at least in the near-term by Gurpartap “GP” Sandhoo, the current SDA deputy, who will become acting director.

“He is extremely well suited. We brought him in December, because he has a very lengthy background in active duty, both in the Marines and the Navy, so that he really understands how the capabilities that SDA will provide will be used by the war fighter in battle,” Tournear said.

Sandhoo further has “a long history of being able to field new capabilities in space, as he had had a dozen years at Naval Research Laboratory and ended up running their their space center,” he added.

Sandhoo first joined SDA as a senior advisor, and was named deputy director in July after the departure of Ryan Frigm.

As for Tournear’s future, he said he will be taking up a position at Auburn University in Alabama, although working from their local office here. Auburn, he noted, is looking to up its game in space technology development and research.

“The want to get more involved in in space innovation and being able to build an ecosystem around space as an education facility and a research house. And so I’m going to be leading that for them,” he said. “

When that kind of fell into my lap, it was difficult to say no to, because that’s too exciting.”

Tournear’s Highlights: Link 16, Tracking Missiles, Laser Comms

Looking back at his time helming SDA, Tournear touted SDA’s demonstration proving that Link 16 could be used by satellites to transmit targeting data to weapons platforms in the air, on land and at sea as the agency’s biggest technological success.

“That is a huge accomplishment, because what that has done is it has proven that we can [connect with] legacy, fielded systems with no change to the user equipment — so, these are the systems that the US and all of our allies use to fight,” he explained.

“Space will now enable us to make Link 16, which was a regional communication network, global, which is a huge deal because it allows all of the combatant commanders to utilize this communication network that they already know how to use, they already trained with, they already practiced with our allies,” he added.

Tournear said the second major SDA tech accomplishment was proving that satellites based in low Earth orbit (LEO) could successfully detect and track missiles — a mission traditionally assigned to large satellites in higher orbits.

He noted that as SDA was gearing up its Tracking Layer constellation, there were a number of skeptics within the Defense Department’s research and engineering community about whether this would work given the physics involved.

“At a lower orbit when [your satellite is] screaming across the Earth, the missiles are screaming across the Earth, and the background is moving right relative to your satellite pretty drastically. They said it’s going to be impossible,” Tournear said.

But SDA was able to prove that it is possible, he said, based in large part on modeling and simulation work done previously by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) under its Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS) program.

Finally, Tournear said SDA’s progress in developing laser communications systems that serve as the foundational “enablers” of SDA’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture’s mesh network design.

While a number of companies have demonstrated optical intersatellite links, he said SDA was able to successfully achieve laser communications “with very affordable, low size, weight and power optical terminals” and “from different spacecraft manufacturers.“

Most recently on the laser comms front, the agency announced on Sept. 2 its first successful demonstration of laser communications between a satellite and an aircraft in flight.

“The successful proof-of-concept demonstration took place in July between a General Atomics Electromagnetics optical communications terminal that was mounted to an aircraft and a commercial satellite operated by Kepler Communications in an orbit around 311 miles (500 kilometers) above Earth,” the announcement said.

This “was something we tried to demonstrate for the last three years, we were finally successful at it, and that was using these same affordable, commoditized SDA compliant … optical comms terminals,” Tournear said.

“That’s a big deal too, because I think that is, that is what opens up a lot of missions in the future.”

Regrets, I’ve had a few …

Asked what his biggest regret was about his tenure, Tournear joked: “Oh … we don’t have time to get into all my regrets.”

Nevertheless, he said that looking back, he wished that he and the agency had more rapidly accepted the shift of SDA from DoD Research and Engineering to, in essence, the Space Force — as a free-standing acquisition shop under the Air Force assistant secretary for space acquisition and integration, and with a direct line to Space Force chief Gen. Chance Saltzman.

“One of the things that I was extremely apprehensive about was the fold of SDA into the Space Force. We actually fought that for quite some time,” he said.

“[I]f I had to do it over again, I actually would not have fought that, and I would have embraced it more. Because the Space Force is not the Air Force, and the Space Force culture was much more accepting of the SDA mindset.”

Tournear was optimistic about SDA’s future, despite a recent review calling into question the agency’s independent processes, and the current uncertainty about its plans for a third iteration, called Tranche 3, of Transport Layer data relay satellites.

As first reported by Breaking Defense, the Department of the Air Force (DAF) in late January ordered an independent review of whether SDA’s “organizational performance and acquisition approach” is meeting the needs of warfighters, including its independence from the Space Force’s primary acquisition organization, Space Systems Command.

The review came in the wake of a Jan. 16 DAF decision to place Tournear on administrative leave for undisclosed reasons, which Breaking Defense first learned was related to a contracting dispute.

He was reinstated in April following an investigation about which DAF declined to provide details.

Tournear said that the review has been completed and by and large “validated” SDA’s acquisition model and processes. “The main point of that review was to come out and say, ‘Look, SDA is doing this stuff the correct way,'” he said.

The review put forward eight recommendations, Tournear added, “almost all” of which were “already being incorporated” as “good ideas” for improving the agency’s processes.

Among those, he stressed, were recommendations that SDA be “better supported” with additional personnel and “more consistent” funding.

Only one recommendation — a call for the establishment of a top-level Board of Directors — was rejected by the agency.

Tranche 3 And The Mysterious MILNET

As for Transport Layer Tranche 3, Tournear suggested that in his view it would go forward, alongside the Space Force’s mysterious MILNET communications network that only recently emerged from the shadows.

DoD and DAF have been considering possibly replacing Tranche 3 with MILNET, which is based on SpaceX’s Starshield terminals and being acquired via the National Reconnaissance Office.

Such a move would in effect kill the Transport Layer, which is one of SDA’s raisons d’etre. Tournear suggested it would be better to get both flying.

“MILNET and the Transport Layer serve two different functions. All of that is part of data transport, and it’s all needed. And so in the future, as that plays out, there are some synergies between the two,” Tournear said.

He explained that the Space Force “is committed to building out a transport layer that does tactical communication, which is what the SDA Transport Layer has been focused on, and that is Link 16 tactical communication directly to special platforms that rely on low bandwidth but extremely low latency communications.”

And that is something that Starlink/Starshield satellites cannot do, Tournear said, stressing that “Link 16 from space is only the SDA Transport Layer.” (SpaceX did not respond to a query about the issue.)

On the other hand, Tournear said that MILNET will bring something to the table that is needed: the ability to “move large amounts of data across the backbone and move large amounts of data in and out of theater.”

Further, he stressed, SDA has been focused on the “Android model” of “open architecture, architecture, open standards, and has competition for anyone to build the hardware and plug in.”

As for MILNET, Tournear said the key question is whether it is instead more similar to the “iPhone model,” under which one vendor “controls everything and has a network, and that is easier to build, obviously, and easier to integrate, because it’s all controlled by one, but then you lose a lot of the free market dynamics.”

(MILNET, at least at the moment, is being pursued under a sole-source contract with SpaceX; and SpaceX uses its own proprietary standard for Starlink/Starshield intersatellite laser links rather than SDA’s open standard.)

“Is that the way in the future? I don’t believe that,” Tournear said.

As for advice to his successor, Tournear said the key is to “continue to stay focused on the warfighter.

“The battleground is not in space. The battleground is on Earth, and space just needs to make sure that the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines that are on the ground get the capabilities they need to be able to conduct the fight in an efficient manner,” he said.

Treasury Department Secretary Scott Bessent insisted Thursday that tariff are not taxes, defying the widely accepted economic and financial definition of President Trump’s top trade tool.

In an exchange about federal revenues coming from Trump’s trade policies, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) pressed Bessent during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, during which the secretary repeated his position that tariffs are not a form of tax.

The article entitled "Henri Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross", appeared in the German Illustrated Magazine Über Land und Meer, and the article was soon reprinted in other publications throughout Europe. The article struck a chord, and he received renewed attention and support.

He received the Swiss Binet-Fendt Prize and a note from Pope Leo XIII. Because of support from Russian tsarist widow Maria Feodorovna and other donations, his financial situation improved remarkably.

This week's total lunar eclipse graced the night sky as Earth drifted between the moon and sun, veiling the lunar disk in its umbral silhouette. As the moon slipped into the deepest part of our planet's shadow — a period known as totality — a phenomenon known as Rayleigh scattering saw the moon adopt a bloody red hue, as sunlight scattered by Earth's atmosphere was bent onto the lunar surface.

Zelensky accuses Trump of ‘giving Putin what he wanted’

The Ukrainian leader has argued that Moscow was “playing games” with the US

US President Donald Trump handed Russian President Vladimir Putin a public relations victory during their one-on-one summit in Alaska last month, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has claimed.

Trump met with Putin on August 15 as part of efforts to mediate a peace deal between Moscow and Kiev. Although the meeting produced no breakthroughs, both sides described it as a positive step.

“It’s a pity that Ukraine was not there, because I think that President Trump gave Putin what he wanted,” Zelensky told ABC News’ Martha Raddatz in an interview aired on Sunday.

“He wanted very much to meet with President Trump… And I think that Putin got it. And, it’s a pity.”

Zelensky argued that Putin was “playing games with the United States,” claiming that the Russian leader wanted “to show everybody video and images” from his summit with Trump.

He called for increased pressure on Moscow, saying it is “not fair” that some EU countries continue to buy Russian oil and gas.

Trump, who previously criticized both Russia and Ukraine, hinted on Sunday that he is ready to impose additional sanctions on Moscow. He had earlier added a 25% tariff on Indian imports of Russian oil.

Russia has demanded that Ukraine recognize its new border and abandon plans to join NATO. Moscow also listed an end to Western weapons deliveries to Kiev as one of the conditions for a ceasefire.

German investigators name Zelensky rival as Nord Stream sabotage mastermind – media

Ex-Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhny is reportedly building a campaign team from London to run for president

Former Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhny commissioned the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines in 2022, German newspaper Die Welt reported on Monday, citing an investigator familiar with the matter.

According to the newspaper, German investigators believe they have cracked the case of the attacks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2, which run under the Baltic Sea and were built to carry Russian natural gas directly to Germany.

Previous Western media reports claimed that the authorities already knew the identities of the entire crew – reportedly made up of Ukrainian nationals – aboard the yacht Andromeda, which is suspected of being the vessel involved in the sabotage.

Die Welt noted that they were acting on orders from Zaluzhny, who was dismissed from his post in February 2024 and appointed Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK.

Since then, media reports have speculated that Zaluzhny could use his political clout to become Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s most dangerous rival in a potential election. Media reports in August claimed that he is already laying the groundwork for a presidential bid and is recruiting campaign staff – a claim Zaluzhny’s team has denied.

Earlier reporting from Der Spiegel in September 2024 also claimed that Zaluzhny greenlit the attack, while a later article by Der Spiegel suggested that the general was so impressed by the operation that he wanted to expand it to target Russia’s TurkStream pipeline in the Black Sea – although the effort was thwarted. Zaluzhny has denied having any role in the sabotage.

According to Die Welt, however, some experts remain skeptical of the alleged Ukrainian role, saying the saboteurs were behaving too conspicuously. “All nonsense,” an official familiar with the investigation said, as cited by the paper. He also accused those who suspect Russia or the US of being behind the attack of believing in conspiracy theories.

In contrast, a senior aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Nikolay Patrushev, claimed the sabotage could not have been executed without Western commandos, singling out Britain as the likely culprit and arguing that the Ukrainians lack the necessary expertise.

Putin previously suggested that US intelligence agencies under President Joe Biden orchestrated the sabotage.

Trump to speak with Putin ‘soon

The US president has also announced plans for talks with several European leaders

US President Donald Trump has said he is preparing a new round of talks with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to take place this week, which will likely center on efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump expressed confidence in ending the hostilities,stating that “we’re going to get it done.” As part of this push, he said he would speak to Putin “very soon, over the next couple of days,” without providing specifics on the agenda.

Moscow has yet to comment, but has praised the Trump administration for its peacemaking efforts while remaining open to diplomacy.

At the same time, Trump complained that he is “not happy about the whole situation” regarding the conflict.

“I am not thrilled with what’s happening there … I think it’s going to get settled,”he said, adding that several European leaders are scheduled to visit the US “on Monday or Tuesday” for discussions on the conflict.

Diplomatic contact between Washington and Moscow has intensified since Trump’s inauguration in January, with numerous rounds of talks held and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff undertaking multiple trips to Russia.

In mid-August, Trump and Putin held a historic summit in Alaska. While no ceasefire or breakthrough agreement was reached, both called the talks extremely productive, and Trump later said Ukraine cannot hope to join NATO or reclaim Crimea, which voted to join Russia in a referendum in 2014 following the Western-backed coup in Kiev.

Following the summit, Trump also moved away from demands for an immediate ceasefire, expressing support for broader peace deal.Russia maintains that a lasting settlement can be reached if Ukraine abandons its NATO ambitions, commits to demilitarization and denazification, and recognizes the new territorial reality on the ground.

During the Alaska summit, Putin invited Trump to Moscow. However, he told reporters last week that while the invitation “is still on the table,” no preparations are currently underway for a new summit.

The first interstellar object to visit the solar system may have been a fragment of an icy exoplanet, research suggests.

When 1I/'Oumuamua was first spotted in 2017, astronomers quickly determined that it came from outside the solar system.

But although it was initially classified as a comet from another star system, it may actually be the skin of an "exo-Pluto," a completely unexpected class of Pluto-like objects anticipated to visit the sun.

"Everything about this object is consistent with it being a slab of nitrogen ice like you see on the surface of Pluto," said Steve Desch, an exoplanet researcher at Arizona State University.

Desch presented his findings in July at the Progress in Understanding the Pluto Mission: 10 Years after Flyby conference in Laurel, Maryland.

Instead of being a mix of water ice, rock and carbon-rich material left over from the formation of the solar system, 'Oumuamua appears to be almost pure nitrogen ice.

And rather than being a compact ball, the visitor is more elongated than any known body in the solar system and starkly different from the interstellar Comets 2I/Borisov and 3I/ATLAS, the only other known interstellar visitors.

"'Oumuamua is in a different category of object," Desch told Space.com by email. "It's much harder to find, but there are a lot more of them."

"We weren't expecting objects like this"

Planets arise from the cloud of gas and dust left over after a star is born. The first few million years are chaotic as the growing worlds jostle for their place around the young star.

In the solar system, the dance of the giant planets cast out a wealth of material. Most of the icy stuff was ejected; scientists think the icy bodies in the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune today make up only a small portion of the original ejecta.

Early on, there may have been enough material to create as many as 2,000 Pluto-like objects, along with 6,000 other, larger dwarf planets, according to Desch.

"Each Pluto would have been pummeled with a Vesta-mass of material," Desch said at the conference, referring to the second-largest object in the asteroid belt. (The largest, Ceres, is also classified as a dwarf planet.)

These collisions would have carved out some of the outermost layer of the wannabe planets. Observations made by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft during its 2015 flyby suggest that most of Pluto's surface is made of nitrogen ice, with some water ice acting as "bedrock."

Although some of this base layer was likely ejected as well, Desch and his colleague Alan Jackson, also of Arizona State University, used simulations to determine that most of the material scraped from the baby Plutos was nitrogen.

During the shake-up of the solar system, these objects would have been redistributed. Passing by the sun too often would have caused many of them to evaporate quickly.

Some would have been hurled inward, toward the sun. Others would have been tossed outward by Jupiter’s gravity.

A handful of that group may have been captured in the Oort cloud at the very edge of the solar system, but most would have ended up adrift in interstellar space.

If planetary dances are common around other stars — and a growing number of observations suggest that they may be — then fragments of exo-Plutos may be ejected alongside comets and full-size planets.

There are hints that some objects classified as comets may actually be chunks of Pluto. In 2018, a separate research team reported that the unusual chemistry of Comet C/2016 R2 hints that it might be a collisional fragment from a Kuiper Belt object.

Two other comets, C/1908 R1 Morehouse and C/1961 R1 Humason, have similar nitrogen-rich compositions that could classify them as scrapings from a proto-Pluto.

In a pair of papers published in 2018 and 2021 in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Desch and Jackson more fully explored how the unusual properties of 'Oumuamua would be better explained by a fragment of a Pluto-like object than by a comet.

"Because we had hardly seen such objects in the solar system, we weren't expecting objects like this," Desch told Space.com. "But we should have.

Fragments of icy surfaces from Pluto-like dwarf planets were almost certainly ejected from our solar system, and 'Oumuamua made us come to grips with how much material must have been ejected."

An unlikely comet

When astronomers first spotted 'Oumuamua, it didn't quite meet their expectations of an exocomet. Although its rapid speed was one of the first signs of its extrasolar origin, it was moving much more slowly than anticipated. Solar system comets are made of water ice, silicates and carbon-rich material, while 'Oumuamua was nitrogen-rich. At about 330 feet (100 meters) in diameter before the sun began to melt its ice, 'Oumuamua was also far smaller than most comets, which typically range from about a few kilometers to tens of kilometers in diameter.

Finally, the object had an unusual shape that puzzled astronomers. Eventually, they determined that 'Oumuamua didn't have the roughly spherical core typically seen in comets; instead, it was elongated, or "pancake-shaped," Desch said.

'Oumuamua's low speed could be explained by its ejection from a young star. As stars age, gravitational interactions with their neighbors provide an occasional speed boost.

If a fragment from an icy world was ejected early, the star would be traveling relatively slowly, imparting that reduced speed to its expelled material.

The nitrogen-rich material also suggested a youthful lifetime. Exposure to cosmic rays erodes the nitrogen ice, leaving behind water-ice objects that are likely more plentiful.

Desch and Jackson estimate that 'Oumuamua is less than 2 billion years old, and perhaps as young as 500 million years old. They suspect it came from a young system, perhaps in the Perseus arm, the closest spiral in the Milky Way to the sun's location in the Orion arm.

The short-lived nitrogen is what made 'Oumuamua so easy to detect. While the water-ice leftovers may be more plentiful, nitrogen ice shines more brightly.

But it also evaporates easily; Desch and Jackson estimate that by the time 'Oumuamua was observed, it had lost more than 90% of the mass it had brought into the solar system.

Altogether, it looks as though chunks of exoplanets may be quite plentiful.

"I think these objects are strong support for the idea that fragments of Pluto surfaces are part of the population of things ejected from the solar system," Desch said.

Indeed, the prompt discovery of 'Oumuamua suggests that interstellar objects may be an order of magnitude more abundant than formerly thought.

Desch said he expects astronomers will find many more interstellar visitors using the Pan-STARRS and ATLAS surveys that found 'Oumuamua and ATLAS, as well as the newly operational Vera Rubin Observatory.

By studying objects from beyond the solar system, researchers may be able to understand more about the outermost dwarf planets.

"More observations of 'Oumuamua-like objects … would tell us a lot about the composition of Plutos," Desch said.

He pointed to observations from New Horizons that suggest our own Pluto may have had a thick coat of nitrogen ice that was lost by impacts and other processes over the 4.5 billion-year life of the solar system.

EU at risk of becoming US ‘vassal’ – ex-bloc foreign policy chief

Donald Trump will never be an ally, Josep Borrell has said, describing the president as a “geopolitical and economic shock” to Europeans

The European Union is facing a world dominated by “continental empires” and risks slipping into a vassal role under the US, the bloc’s former top diplomat, Josep Borrell, has said.

In a Politico column published on Monday,Borrell argued that the EU appears “dangerously fragmented and weak.”This, he said, became clear after the bloc made nonreciprocal concessions to US President Donald Trump on defense spending and trade, and accepted a junior role in managing the Ukraine conflict.

Trump has pressured European NATO members to boost military spending, and has also agreed a trade deal with Brussels that imposes a 15% tariff on most EU exports, scraps duties on US industrial goods, and opens wide market access to American products. The deal has sparked a backlash from current and former EU officials, who say it heavily favors Washington.

“Home to just 5% of the global population and a widening economic gap with other major powers, Europe isn’t just facing up to a world of continental empires but is at real risk of becoming America’s vassal,”Borrell wrote. (They’ve always been a vassal!)

He argued that any deals pushed by Trump serve only his own interests, saying the US president views contracts as binding “only on the other party – not him.”

Borrell added that even pledges by Europeans to spend 5% of GDP on defense and boost purchases of US arms and gas had not strengthened Trump’s commitment to collective security. Instead, Borrell wrote, everything from minerals agreements to weapons sales had turned into “a purely transactional affair” aimed at advancing US economic gains.

“It should be clear by now that Trump isn’t, and never will be, an ally. His America constitutes a huge geopolitical, economic and cultural shock to Europe,”the former EU foreign policy chief concluded.

Last month, former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said Trump had delivered a “brutal wake-up call” to the EU, exposing its weakness in “passivity and rigidity.”He urged reforms including scrapping internal trade barriers and issuing common debt to fund defense, infrastructure, and innovation, warning that a return to national sovereignty would only leave the EU more vulnerable to great powers.

The accident, which occurred at around 8am on Sunday near Skorped, in the Vasternorrland region, is believed to have been caused by heavy rainfall, which damaged the railway infrastructure. It is unclear what type of ammunition the train was transporting or what its destination was.

Emergency services are managing the dangerous cargo, after which the site will be cleared and the full extent of the damage assessed. “Only then can we make a forecast for the work. It will be a longer stop, but I can’t say how long,”Peter Jonsson, a spokesman for the Swedish Transport Administration, told the broadcaster TV4.

According to the Transport Administration, it will take weeks to restore the railway.

Pictures from the scene show sections of rail suspended above rapidly rushing water, with four carriages behind the locomotive having derailed and partially submerged in a nearby lake. Local authorities cited massive downpours in the area over Saturday and Sunday, which washed out roads and strained infrastructure. A timber train also derailed on the same line between Solleftea and Kramfors further to the south.

Sweden officially became a NATO member last year, ending more than two centuries of neutrality. Like many other Western nations, it has significantly ramped up its defense production. In 2024, the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) struck a deal with Nammo, a Norwegian-Finnish weapons producer, to boost production of 155mm artillery shells.

Officials said the agreement was aimed at “increasing the possibility of supporting Ukraineand at the same time strengthening the security of supply of artillery ammunition in Sweden and the Nordic countries in the long term.”

Moscow has denounced Western arms shipments to Ukraine and NATO as saber-rattling. Kremlin spokesman DmitryPeskov has lamented that the peace settlement process is being hindered by “reckless European militarism.”

Debates in Europe about deploying troops from NATO countries to Ukraine are largely a ploy to win favor with US President Donald Trump,Kiev’s envoy to the United Nations, Andrey Melnik, said in an interview published on Sunday.

Moscow has ruled out any foreign military presence in Ukraine as part of a peace settlement. Speaking to Germany’s Stern magazine,Melnik dismissed the Western discussions as largely symbolic.

“Unfortunately, at the moment, this is a sham debate,” he said. “No German politician can seriously commit 5,000 or 10,000 soldiers” to Ukraine when there is no clear mandate for such a mission, he added.

“One reason the Europeans are bringing these troops into play isprobably that they have little to offer Donald Trump in order to protect their own interests,” the diplomat stated.

Melnik noted that European NATO states have opted not to negotiate directly with Russia. With Trump pushing for a resolution, they can “at best ride along on this train and only try to cushion the situation.”

The diplomat is known for incendiary rhetoric during his years as Ukraine’s ambassador in Berlin from 2014 to 2022. He once mocked then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz as an “offended liverwurst” over his reluctance to visit Kiev and similarly criticized other German politicians skeptical of Ukraine’s stance. Melnik told Stern he “wasn’t always able to find well-considered words” while representing his nation and offered an apology.

Germany is part of the “coalition of the willing,” a group of nations exploring possible security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a truce with Russia.Like most participants, Berlin has ruled out deploying its own troops inside the country.

Plot

The Emerson family—teenager Michael, his younger brother Sam, and their recently divorced mother Lucy—move to the seaside town of Santa Carla, California, to live with Lucy's eccentric father ("Grandpa"). Lucy takes a job at a video store owned by Max, who takes a romantic interest in her. At the local comic-book store, Sam meets the Frog brothers, Edgar and Alan, self-proclaimed vampire hunters, who claim the undead have infested the town.

Meanwhile, Michael becomes drawn to Star, a beautiful girl he meets on the boardwalk. He notices Star spending time with David, the charismatic leader of a local gang that includes Paul, Dwayne, and Marko. Sensing Michael's interest in Star, David challenges him to keep up with them on their motorcycles, leading him to their hideout in a former luxury hotel buried during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. There, David manipulates Michael's perception, making his food appear as maggots or worms, before offering him a bottle of red liquid. Although Star warns him that it contains blood, Michael drinks. David's gang then leads him to a railway bridge, where they hang suspended over a vast drop, each member eventually letting go and disappearing into the fog. Michael, unable to hold on, falls, but he inexplicably lands safely in his bed.

Michael begins to change; he becomes sensitive to light, finds normal food revolting, and notices his reflection fading. He develops a craving for blood and nearly attacks Sam, but Sam's dog, Nanook, intervenes and stops him. Though terrified, Sam agrees to help Michael and deduces that he is turning into a vampire. His transformation will only be complete, though, if he feeds on human blood, and it may be reversible if they kill the head vampire. Sam, Edgar, and Alan suspect Max is the head vampire, but after Max is invited to dinner at Lucy's house, they notice he has a reflection.

David and his gang attempt to push Michael into killing by revealing their true monstrous faces and demonstrating their ability to fly as they murder a group of partygoers. Michael resists the temptation to feed. Later, Star confides in Michael that Laddie, a young member of the gang, and she are also only partly transformed, as they, too, have refused to kill. She admits that David wanted her to kill Michael to complete her transformation. Determined to save her, Michael leads Sam and the Frog brothers to the gang's lair during the day while the vampires are sleeping. They stake and kill Marko, whose pained screams awaken the others. The boys narrowly escape with Star and Laddie, as David vows to hunt them down that night.

Michael, Sam, and the Frog brothers prepare for the gang's impending assault, arming themselves with holy water, a longbow, and stakes. As night falls, David's gang breaks into the Emerson home. In the ensuing fight, Sam, Nanook, and the Frog brothers kill Paul and Dwayne, while Michael takes on David. Michael resists David's urging to accept his transformation and impales him on Grandpa's collection of antlers. Despite David's death, Michael's transformation is not undone, leading the group to realize that David was not the head vampire.

Zelensky claims ‘victory’ is avoiding total loss of Ukraine

Moscow has repeatedly stressed it has no intention of seizing the neighboring country

Ukrainian leader VladimirZelensky has claimed Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to occupy the whole of the country, and that Kiev can claim “victory” in the conflict as long as this does not happen.

Russia has long stressed that it has no intention of occupying Ukraine in full. Putin reiterated this when the conflict escalated in February 2022, and again later that year when Russian troops reached Kiev but then withdrew.

Since then, Moscow has consistently said any peace settlement requires Ukrainian neutrality, demilitarization, and recognition of Crimea, Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye as Russian territory.

Zelensky, however, insisted in an interview with ABC News’ Martha Raddatz which aired on Sunday that Moscow’s ambitions go further.“Putin’s goal is to occupy Ukraine, it is to destroy us… For him that’s victory,”he claimed. “And until he can do it, the victory is on our side… For us to survive is a victory.

He also accused Putin of “playing games” by holding a summit with US President Donald Trump in Alaskawhile allegedly refusing to meet with him, and claimed the Russian leader is not truly interested in peace.

Putin and Trump met in Anchorage on August 15. Although the summit produced no breakthroughs, both sides described it as a positive step.

Trump’s remarks afterward fueled speculation of a potential Putin-Zelensky meeting. Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov later said no agreement had been reached, although Putin has not ruled out a meeting, despite questioning Zelensky’s legitimacy after his presidential term expired. Putin has stressed, however, that talks can only occur after tangible progress in negotiations.

Last week, Putin struck a cautiously optimistic note about the prospects for peace, saying “there is light at the end of the tunnel” given the US shift to peace mediation. Kirill Dmitriev, Putin’s aide on international economic affairs, echoed the sentiment on Sunday, saying that “peace is close precisely because of Trump-Putin dialogue.”

On Sunday, Trump told reporters he planned further talks with Putin “over the next couple of days,” vowing “to get it done – the Russia-Ukraine situation”soon.

He reveals he passed the boys' earlier vampire tests because he had been invited into their home, making him immune to those vulnerabilities. Max explains his desire to create a vampire family and that he ordered David to turn Michael and Sam to compel Lucy to join the family as mother to the boys. To save Sam from being killed on the spot by Max, Lucy agrees to Max's demands. Before Max can turn her, though, Grandpa crashes his truck through the wall, impaling Max with a large wooden fence post and causing him to explode. With Max's death, Michael, Star, and Laddie revert to normal. Grandpa then quips, "One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach—all the damn vampires."
