It began being trespasses with the Tyndale 1526 translation of the Bible to more closely align with the Greek word paraptōmata which means transgressions.
The prayer has nothing to do with financial debts, which is our modern usage and understanding of the word ‘debts’.
Matthew 6:14-15:
The verses immediately following the prayer use the Greek word paraptōmata, which means "trespasses" or "transgressions". It is believed that Tyndale and the Book of Common Prayer used this word in the prayer to connect the petition for forgiveness with this subsequent explanation of it.
