A recent study has revealed that numerous universities, despite pledging to eliminate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, are instead rebranding the initiatives under new names.

CriticalRace.org, a website that tracks Critical Race Theory (CRT) curricula and training at over 700 higher education institutions across the US, found that 10 out of 26 universities in states with legislative efforts to remove DEI have simply replaced these programs with new offices that retain similar goals and personnel.

States such as Alabama, Florida, Idaho, and Iowa have moved to eliminate DEI from higher education, yet many colleges in these states have opened offices like the “Office of Access and Engagement” and the “Division of Access, Opportunity, and Diversity” to replace DEI departments. These new offices appear to carry on the same initiatives as their predecessors, according to the website’s findings.

William A. Jacobson, a clinical professor of law at Cornell Law School and who founded CriticalRace.org’s database, explained to Fox News that these findings demonstrate how “deeply embedded” CRT and DEI concepts are in higher education.

“The efforts to excise CRT and DEI from universities will take time to see real impact,” Jacobson said. “Higher education has little desire to reform itself, and only a sustained long-term effort will move universities back to the central mission of education, and away from ideological indoctrination.”

According to CriticalRace.org,the universities that have rebranded their DEI initiatives include The University of Alabama, Florida State University, University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa, Oklahoma State University, South Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, University of Tennessee (System-wide), University of Utah and Utah Valley University.

“For example, the University of Alabama disbanded its DEI office and launched the Division of Opportunities, Connections, and Success; however, the new division is led by Dr. Christine Taylor, who was the Vice President and Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion,” the website said in its report.

“Florida State University took a similar approach by changing title names and reclassifying positions of employees who were already working in DEI to give them different roles; the approach circumvented the University laying anyone off,” it continued. “The Office of Equal Opportunity Compliance and Engagement was activated in October 2023 to replace the DEI office.”

Kemberlee Kaye, managing editor of CriticalRace.org, noted that the findings were expected.

“We predicted a year ago after the Supreme Court affirmative action ruling that DEI would not disappear on college campuses but would move underground in a variety of ways. Our research findings confirm our analysis that one time legislative efforts are not sufficient and sustained action is necessary,” Kaye told Fox News.

“This research is imperative to understanding that legislative efforts halting the funding and/or proliferation of DEI/CRT on campus are a solid first step, but they’re not a one-stop solution,” she added.

Right-wing agitator Charlie Kirk is set to make two stops at Utah universities during an upcoming tour next month — and it’s already spurring outrage among some students.⁠

A petition started by a USU student Friday calling for Kirk’s appearance at the school to be canceled received more than 800 signatures in under 16 hours and came after Turning Point USA, Kirk’s organization, announced five tour stops in September, with Kirk’s visits to Utah bookending appearances in Colorado, Minnesota and Virginia.⁠

“Charlie Kirk’s scheduled appearance at Utah State University on his American Comeback Tour is a matter of significant concern for many students and community members,” the Change.org petition calling for the cancellation of Kirk’s USU appearance reads.⁠

Hello friends and fellow students,

I wish I were writing to report that UVU had chosen to act against platforming Charlie Kirk tomorrow, but unfortunately that is not the case. UVU has decided to continue hosting the event, citing its commitment to “institutional neutrality and free expression” in a statement released last week.

What disappointed me most in UVU’s statement was when they said, “UVU, including its leaders speaking on behalf of the institution, does not take official positions on political, social, or cultural controversies unless they directly impact our mission, operations, or core values.”

I believe this stance fails to align with UVU’s own mission and values. Neutrality in the face of harm contradicts the values of care, accountability, and results. Likewise, inclusion cannot exist if neutrality permits marginalization. UVU’s leadership must recognize when speech or actions on campus compromise student success, dignity, or belonging. In these cases, neutrality does not uphold UVU’s mission, it undermines it. I’ve expressed these concerns directly to officials but have not yet received a response.

Even so, I am grateful that we were able to rally together and make our voices heard through this petition. Thank you to everyone who signed.

As for tomorrow, I've heard students are responding in different ways: some will attend the event but ignore him, others plan to debate, protest, hand out flyers, or set up alternative tables to draw attention elsewhere. Whichever you decide, I encourage you to stay safe, support one another, and remember that our collective presence and voices matter. What unites us is a commitment to making UVU a place where all students feel valued, respected, and included.

A federal judge in New York denied a motion by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to dismiss a lawsuit brought by families of 9/11 victims who are seeking to hold the Middle Eastern country responsible for potentially providing support to the hijackers, allowing the suit to proceed.

The ruling is the latest in a long-running lawsuit seeking to hold the Saudi government liable for al Qaeda's attacks, a case that has been described by lawyers for the plaintiffs as a "labyrinth."

Saudi Arabia had the suit temporarily dismissed in 2015, before the dismissal was overturned by a federal appeals court. While the appeal was pending in 2016, Congress enacted a law known as the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, which allowed victims of terror attacks to sue foreign governments and individuals if they provided material support to the attackers. It also gave U.S. courts jurisdiction over potential lawsuits filed over injuries and deaths in attacks on U.S. soil.

Allegations that members of the Saudi government had links to some of the Sept. 11 hijackers have circulated for years. The claims have drawn vehement denials from Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East. Most theories have centered on two of the 19 hijackers: Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi, who were on the plane that crashed into the Pentagon.

More than a year before the hijackings, al-Midhar and al-Hazmi settled in Los Angeles, where a Saudi man named Omar al-Bayoumi helped them find an apartment. A 2004 report by the 9/11 Commission said that Bayoumi met the two hijackers by chance at a restaurant.

The Issue

Utah Valley University's tagline is "a place for you." How then, can the university claim to represent inclusion and diversity by allowing an influencer like Charlie Kirk to have a platform? Charlie Kirk is known for his divisive rhetoric that often supports policies and laws which aren't inclusive and can marginalize various communities. 



As students at Utah Valley University, we have come to cherish an environment that strives for inclusivity and diversity. Yet, the planned speaking engagement of Charlie Kirk threatens this ideal. Kirk's presence and the messages he delivers stand in contrast to the values of understanding, acceptance, and progress that many of us hold dear.



It's imperative that UVU re-evaluates the decision to allow Charlie Kirk to speak. We advocate for speakers who inspire inclusivity and unity, rather than division. Universities are meant to be places of learning, growth, and unity. Giving a platform to someone whose views are in direct opposition to these principles undermines UVU's commitment to being "a place for you."



Let's take action and urge Utah Valley University to reconsider this decision. By doing so, we are championing a campus environment where every student feels welcome and represented. Your voice matters; please sign this petition to help maintain UVU as a truly inclusive place for everyone.
