Presidential Medal of Freedom, the foremost U.S. civilian decoration, awarded to individuals who have made โ€œan especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.โ€ Recipients of the award are selected by the president of the United States, with the assistance of the Distinguished Civilian Service Awards Board, an advisory group created in 1957.
