Railway demining turns deadly in western Russia

13 Sep, 2025 16:53

Two people are dead and one is wounded after a bomb exploded during an inspection of railway tracks in Orel Region, western Russia, Governor Andrey Klychkov has said.

“Explosive devices were discovered during an inspection of railway tracks… when one of them detonated, two people were killed and one injured,” Klychkov said in his statement on Saturday.

Security agencies are now looking for saboteurs who mined the railway, he added.

According to the governor, several trains have been delayed. “Train crews are providing comprehensive assistance to passengers, we are considering transporting them to their places of residence by bus,” Klychkov said.

In May, two railway bridges were blown up by Ukrainian intelligence in Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk regions. In Bryansk, debris from a bombed bridge fell in front of, and derailed, an inter-city passenger train.

Seven people were killed and over one hundred seriously injured in the crash.

Another railway bridge was blown up as a freight train passed over it in neighboring Kursk Region, wounding the driver and two assistants.

The attacks were carried out the day before the second round of direct Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul. According to the head of Russia’s Investigative Committee Aleksandr Bastrykin, the explosives were foreign-made.

Scientists working on ‘animal internet’

13 Sep, 2025 16:03

Scientists are using interactive digital devices to transform animal communication, working towards an “animal internet” with video calls for parrots and dogs.

Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas, a lecturer and researcher at Glasgow University, runs the Animal-Computer Interaction (ACI) group and has developed interfaces allowing long-distance calls for pets, as well as interactive enrichment systems for zoo animals like monkeys and giraffes.

Many animals we keep are often naturally highly social creatures, yet they are not kept in the kind of groups in captivity that they would naturally form in the wild or have the same level of social interaction, the scientist has said.

Hirskyj-Douglas started her research by building her dog Zach a phone to communicate with her while she was away. It allows the dog to shake a ball with an accelerometer, signaling for the system to video call her on a nearby screen.

Either one of them can call the other and pick up or ignore the call.

Zach called her frequently, the video calls soon becoming routine, she said.

Since then, Hirskyj-Douglas and her team developed video calls for parrots to socialize. The birds were trained to use their tongues on tablet touchscreens, enabling them to connect with other parrots in a kind of play-dating system.

“We plan to move beyond simple video calling and really enable animals to do things interactively,” she said at the British Science Festival in Liverpool on Thursday, as cited by FT.

“To build a workable ‘animal internet’, we must develop species-specific technologies to meet their needs, giving them tools that match their abilities,” Hirskyj-Douglas said in a comment published by Glasgow University earlier this month.

Baidu, China’s leading search engine operator, filed a patent in May for AI technology that translates animal sounds into human language.

The system could allow “deeper emotional communication and understanding between animals and humans,” Baidu said in the patent document.

Ukrainian drones strike chemical plant in Russia’s Perm region – source

14.09.2025 17:06

Strike drones operated by Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) targeted a chemical industry facility in Russia’s Perm Krai that is considered critical to the Russian military-industrial complex.

According to sources within HUR, preliminary information indicates that equipment used for urea production was damaged in the attack.

The targeted enterprise, PJSC Metafrax Chemicals, produces key components used in the manufacture of explosives.

The facility is located approximately 1,600 kilometers from Ukraine’s border.

The operation was carried out by the Unmanned Systems Forces of HUR’s Department of Active Operations.

As previously reported by Ukrinform, units from the Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) and Special Operations Forces carried out a series of highly complex missions aimed at disrupting railway connections along the Oryol–Kursk and Saint Petersburg–Pskov routes.

Major Russian Refinery Hit in Large-Scale Ukrainian Drone Attack

September 14, 2025

Ukraine launched a significant attack using at least 361 drones to target Russia, leading to a brief fire at the Kirishi oil refinery, with no reported injuries.

The situation comes as discussions among major powers continue on how to resolve the deadly conflict in Europe since World War II.

The drone warfare has intensified, with Russian drones being brought down in NATO-member Poland and Ukraine attacking oil refineries and pipelines in Russia, a major oil exporter.

Russia’s defense ministry reported that they shot down at least 361 Ukrainian drones, including four guided aerial bombs and a U. S.-made HIMARS missile. The exact locations of the attacks were not specified.

The Kirishi refinery, one of Russia’s largest, was confirmed by Ukraine’s drone command to have been targeted, where three drones were destroyed. A fire caused by debris from the attack was extinguished.

In recent weeks, the U. S. has increased pressure on NATO allies to impose stricter energy sanctions on Russia to reduce its war revenues.

President Trump stated the U. S. would consider new sanctions on Russia if all NATO countries ceased buying Russian oil.

Meanwhile, the EU plans to phase out Russian oil and gas imports by 2028. Russia also reported missile strikes during military exercises with Belarus.

Additionally, an oil company in Bashkortostan will continue production despite a recent drone attack.

Romania scrambles fighter jets after Russian drone 'breaches airspace' - as Zelenskyy warns of war 'expansion'

Sunday 14 September 2025 09:32, UK

Romania has said a drone breached its airspace during a Russian attack on neighbouring Ukraine.

Fighter jets were scrambled on Saturday, coming close to taking down the aircraft as it was flying very low before it left national airspace toward Ukraine, defence minister Ionut Mosteanu said.

Romania is the latest NATO member state to report an incursion, with Poland deploying aircraft and closing an airport in the eastern city of Lublin on Saturday, three days after it shot down Russian drones in its airspace.

They are the first known shots fired by a member of the Western alliance during Russia's war in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, military exercises are taking place over the Barents Sea, with Russia and Belarus conducting joint drills.

Russian MiG-31 fighter jets equipped with hypersonic ballistic missiles completed a four-hour flight over the neutral waters as part of ongoing "Zapad 2025" military exercises, the Interfax news agency reported on Saturday.

Romania has had Russian drone fragments fall on to its territory repeatedly since Russia began waging its full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago.

Two F-16 fighter jets were initially scrambled by Romania, and later two Eurofighters.

Citizens in the southeastern county of Tulcea near the Danube and its Ukrainian border were warned to take cover, the defence ministry said.

The ministry said the drone dropped off their radar 20km (12 miles) southwest of the village of Chilia Veche.

While helicopters were surveying the area looking for possible drone parts, Mr Mosteanu told private television station Antena 3 that "all information at this moment indicates the drone exited airspace to Ukraine".

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media that data showed the drone breached about 10km (six miles) into Romanian territory and operated in NATO airspace for around 50 minutes.

He said Belarusian airspace was also used for entry into Ukraine's airspace.

Mr Zelenskyy described the reported incursion as "an obvious expansion of the war by Russia," and called for "tariffs against Russian trade" and a "collective defence".

He warned: "Do not wait for dozens of "shaheds" [Iranian-designed drones] and ballistic missiles before finally making decisions."

NATO has said it plans to strengthen eastern flank defence, following earlier Polish airspace violations.

US secretary of state Marco Rubio called the Polish incursion "unacceptable and unfortunate and dangerous", and said while it was unclear if the drones were intentionally sent to Poland, if it was the case, it would be "a highly escalatory move".

Experts, including Sky News international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn have previously suggested the Kremlin is testing the West with gradual but steady escalation - a tactic known as "salami slicing".

On Saturday, Donald Trump said on his Truth Social platform that he was "ready to do major sanctions on Russia", but only when all NATO nations "do the same thing" and "stop buying oil from Russia".

Mr Trump has repeatedly threatened sanctions against Moscow, so far without any action. The president also said NATO members should also put 50% to 100% tariffs on China - and only withdraw them if the conflict ends.

NATO member Turkey has been the third largest buyer of Russian oil since 2023, after China and India, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, with fellow members Hungary and Slovakia also buying energy supplies from Moscow.

Blackwater founder seeks to acquire Ukrainian drone companies

Sep 14, 2025, 2:59 PM

According to a report by The Guardian citing sources familiar with the matter, “Erik is going out there to buy drone companies."

"Whether they would sell them […] For the Ukrainians, these companies are now strategic assets."

Prince is reportedly pursuing meetings with key players in Ukraine’s fast-growing drone sector, which has played a central role in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

“I’m not surprised at all,” a former American special forces soldier with experience in Ukraine and knowledge of the various defense companies operating there told The Guardian.

“Drones are now an integral part of the PMC [private military contractor] world. If you’re a PMC and you don’t have a drone or possibly an electronic warfare capability, you are antiquated.”

Internal documents cited by the news outlet suggest that the Pentagon is interested in collaborating with US-based drone manufacturers that are active in Ukraine, as part of a broader effort to understand the evolving nature of modern warfare and adapt to new battlefield realities.

This development comes amid an ongoing shift in military strategy, where unmanned aerial systems have proven decisive in surveillance, targeting, and logistics.

Israel levels three towers in Gaza City as residents continue to evacuate area

September 14, 2025 4:35 pm

The Israel Defense Forces said Sunday morning that dozens of terror operatives had been killed across Gaza over the previous 24 hours, as fighting in Gaza City continued to intensify and Palestinians continued to flee amid looming Israeli plans to capture the city.

The IDF struck three tall buildings in Gaza City on Sunday after issuing separate evacuation warnings for all three, including a university building, which Israel said was being used by Hamas.

Meanwhile, a fresh IDF estimate said that more than 300,000 Palestinians had so far evacuated Gaza City, out of approximately a million who were in the city, for other areas of the Strip.

Hospitals in Gaza said Israeli strikes had killed at least 13 people on Sunday; Hamas-controlled authorities, which do not distinguish between civilians and combatants, also reported Saturday that at least 47 people had been killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza over the previous 24 hours.

The IDF confirmed carrying out airstrikes on three high-rise towers in Gaza City on Sunday following evacuation warnings for Palestinian civilians in the vicinity.

On Sunday morning, residents said the Kawthar tower, in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood, was flattened to the ground about an hour after an IDF warning.

There were no immediate reports of casualties. According to the military, Hamas had placed surveillance equipment in that building to track IDF troop movements in the area, in order to advance attacks.

In the afternoon, footage posted by Palestinian media showed a strike against the Mahna Tower high-rise, also in Tel al-Hawa, also following an IDF evacuation warning.

Shortly afterward, Israel destroyed the al-Munawwarah City building on the Islamic University of Gaza campus, Palestinian media reported.

According to the military, Hamas had placed surveillance equipment and set up observation posts in the Mahna Tower and a building on the Islamic University campus, in order to track troop movements and advance attacks.

The military said Hamas operatives “prepared to carry out attacks against IDF troops in the area of one of the buildings that was struck.”

Five days after Israel issued an evacuation order for the entirety of Gaza City ahead of a planned offensive there, the IDF asserted that more than 300,000 Palestinians had so far evacuated Gaza City to other areas of the Strip, according to fresh estimates.

Tens of thousands of people had left the area in the past day, the military said on Sunday.

Around one million Palestinians were estimated to be residing in Gaza City before the IDF began to prepare for a major offensive against Hamas there. Last week, the IDF ordered all of Gaza City to evacuate immediately ahead of the planned offensive.

Civilians have been instructed to head for an Israeli-designated humanitarian zone in the Strip’s south. Israel has said it will take over Gaza City, calling it one of Hamas’s last strongholds, and mobilized tens of thousands of reservists for the operation.

The UN and aid groups have warned that displacing hundreds of thousands of people will exacerbate a dire humanitarian crisis in the enclave.

Sites in southern Gaza where Israel is telling people to go are often overcrowded, according to the UN, and it can cost money to move, which many people don’t have.

Displaced Gazans say they were stopped from setting up tents

Amid the mass evacuation effort, however, displaced Gazans have — in at least two instances — said they were prevented from setting up tents in an area of the southern Strip.

A video circulating on social media Sunday showed a man in an area north of Khan Younis claiming he was prevented from setting up a tent at the site, saying he was shot at when he tried to do so.

From the footage, it was not clear who the man believes attacked him.

Abdallah, a Gaza City resident who asked not to be further identified, told The Times of Israel that his neighbor left Gaza City after the Israeli military issued an evacuation order amid a widening offensive, and set up a tent in the same area of the south shown in the video.

He said that it was Hamas members who blocked displaced residents from setting up the tents, arguing the land was “government property.”

It should be noted that some accounts on social media claimed that it was private individuals who were preventing evacuated Gazans from setting up the tents.

Strikes across the Strip continue

On Sunday, at least 13 Palestinians were killed and dozens were wounded in multiple Israeli strikes across Gaza, according to local hospitals.

Two parents, their three children and the children’s aunt were killed in one strike, according to the Al-Aqsa hospital.

The family was from the northern town of Beit Hanoun, and arrived in Deir al-Balah last week after fleeing their shelter in Gaza City.

The IDF did not have immediate comment on the particular strikes, but it said Sunday that dozens of terror operatives had been killed in airstrikes in Gaza over the past 24 hours.

In Jabalia and on the outskirts of Gaza City, the IDF said troops of the Givati Infantry Brigade killed more than 10 operatives and destroyed Hamas infrastructure, and that the 215th Artillery Regiment killed additional operatives and destroyed weapon depots.

On the outskirts of Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, the IDF said troops of the 401st Armored Brigade led a strike that killed a group of at least 10 Hamas operatives who were identified in the area.

Also over the weekend, in northern Gaza, the military said the 990th Reserve Artillery Regiment killed additional operatives and destroyed a Hamas anti-tank missile launch post used in a previous attack, and that the Yiftah Reserve Infantry Brigade and Gaza Division’s Northern Brigade destroyed several buildings being used by Hamas for surveillance.

In southern Gaza, reservists of the Etzioni Reserve Infantry Brigade destroyed Hamas surveillance equipment and killed several operatives, the IDF added.

IDF names some Hamas commanders killed in last month

The military also said Sunday that more than 20 Hamas terrorists, including several who participated in the October 7, 2023, onslaught, have been killed in strikes carried out by the 282nd Artillery Regiment in the past month.

Among the slain terrorists who invaded Israel on October 7, 2023, was Yousef Jumaa, the commander of a terror cell that raided Kibbutz Alumim, the IDF said, adding he also carried out attacks against Israel and IDF troops in Gaza during the war.

Other operatives killed in the regiment’s strikes were named by the IDF as Samir Laqta, the commander of a Nukhba force cell; Issa Abbas, a company commander in Hamas’s Zeitoun Battalion; and Ismail Adwan, Ahmed Adwan and Mohammed Adwan, all members of Hamas’s Beit Hanoun Battalion.

Water pipeline to south Gaza resumes after repairs

Water supply to the southern Gaza Strip via a pipeline from Israel has resumed following repairs carried out by international organizations, Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories said on Sunday.

The Bani Suheila pipeline, near Khan Younis, is one of three water lines from Israel to Gaza.

Hamas authorities report two malnutrition-related deaths

The Hamas-controlled health ministry claimed on Sunday that two Palestinian adults had died of causes related to malnutrition and starvation in the Gaza Strip over the last 24 hours.

That brought the ministry’s death toll from malnutrition-related causes to 422, including 145 children, since the war began.

Israel denies that there is starvation in Gaza, and has said that a series of steps it took in July to facilitate the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid have brought food prices in Gaza’s markets back down.

The prices shot up amid a two-month Israeli blockade on all aid from March to May, which Israel said it imposed to pressure Hamas to release hostages.

Yemeni forces launch new drone attack on Israel Ramon Airport

Sep 14, 2025, 5:44 PM

In a statement released on Sunday, the Israeli military said Yemeni forces had launched an unmanned aerial vehicle towards the Ramon Airport near the city of Eilat.

The army further asserted that its anti-air missile systems “intercepted” the drone, Press TV reported.

Hebrew-language media outlets said sirens were activated at Be’er Ora community settlement in the vicinity of the airport.

The development comes less than a week after the Yemeni military claimed responsibility for a series of drone strikes against Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv, the Ramon Airport and a sensitive facility at Dimona city in the Negev desert, using three home-grown aircraft.

Spokesperson for the Yemeni military, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, announced in a televised statement on September 8 that the operation attained its desired objectives.

A day earlier, a Yemeni unmanned aerial vehicle had breached the airspace over the Israeli-occupied territories, penetrated Israeli air defenses, and struck its target at the Ramon Airport.

In response to the genocidal war on Gaza that commenced in October 2023, Yemeni forces implemented a strategic maritime blockade aimed at hindering the flow of military supplies to Israel, while calling on the international community to confront the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Simultaneously, they executed several missile and drone strikes on critical targets situated in the Israeli-occupied territories, showcasing their support for the Palestinians in Gaza.

The Yemeni Armed Forces have clearly declared their intention to persist with their operations until Israel ceases its ground and aerial attacks on Gaza.

The Israeli war in Gaza has killed more than 64,800 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children.

Paramilitary Drones Hit Key Sites In Sudan

Updated September 14, 2025

Multiple paramilitary drones attacked key army positions and civilian infrastructure in Sudan’s south on Sunday, an army official told AFP, just a week after similar strikes hit the capital.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by a brutal war between the regular armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), killing tens of thousands and displacing millions.

Sunday’s strikes targeted the headquarters of the Sudanese army’s 18th Division, along with fuel depots on the western bank of the Nile, east of the army-held city of Kosti in White Nile state, the official said.

Additional attacks hit the Kenana airbase and airport, located southeast of Kosti, while drones also struck the Um Dabakir power station, east of the city, the official added on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to the media.

Eyewitnesses in Kosti, located some 320 kilometres (200 miles) south of Khartoum, reported extremely loud explosions during the attacks.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks and the extent of the damage remains unclear.

An army spokesman separately said that a number of paramilitary drones targeted early Saturday facilities in El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state.

Army air defences intercepted the drones on El-Obeid, located about 400 kilometres (about 250 miles) southwest of Khartoum, the spokesman said, adding that no casualties were reported.

The army did not specify which facilities were targeted.

The attacks come days after a wave of RSF drone strikes targeted key infrastructure and army installations in and around Khartoum, including a power station, an oil refinery, a weapons factory and an airbase.

The RSF’s Tasis administration, which has declared itself the governing authority in paramilitary-held areas, later claimed responsibility, describing them as “precise and successful air strikes”.

Following the army’s recapture of the capital in March, the RSF has increasingly used drones to attack army-controlled areas, often targeting critical infrastructure and causing widespread power outages affecting millions.

Efforts to broker a ceasefire between warring parties have so far failed.

On Saturday, Sudan’s army-aligned government pushed back against a new peace proposal from four influential foreign powers — the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.

The proposal called for a humanitarian truce, followed by a permanent ceasefire and a transition toward civilian rule.

The four nations also suggested that no warring party should be included in the post-war transition — a proposal swiftly rejected by the government.

Sudan’s current state institutions remain under army control.

The conflict has effectively split the country, with the army holding the north, east and centre, while the RSF dominates parts of the south and nearly all of the western Darfur region.

According to witnesses and locals, Omar was traveling in his private vehicle from Ceel-buh district, accompanied by an unidentified man who had been staying with him for three nights.

Both men were killed in the strike, though the intended target of the attack remains unclear.

Independent reports suggest the man accompanying the elder had been staying at a hotel in Ceel-buh for the past four nights.

Sources confirmed that the vehicle struck in the airstrike belonged to Elder Omar, a well-known figure in the area who played a key role in conflict resolution and matters of public interest.

Authorities have yet to comment on the incident, and it remains unclear who carried out the strike or who the actual target was.

Rubio calls Russian drones over Poland ‘unacceptable’ but declines to say it was intentional

Sat 13 Sep 2025 14.42 EDT

The US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, on Saturday said the incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace this week was unacceptable but that it remained unclear whether Russia had deliberately sent the drones into Polish territory.

Nato announced plans to beef up the defense of Europe’s eastern flank on Friday, after Poland shot down the drones that had violated its airspace, the first known shots fired by a member of the western alliance during Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“We think it’s an unacceptable and unfortunate and dangerous development,” Rubio told reporters before departing on a trip to Israel and Britain.

“No doubt about it: the drones were intentionally launched. The question is whether the drones were targeted to go into Poland specifically.“

Rubio said that if the drones had been targeted at Poland, “if the evidence leads us there, then obviously that’ll be a highly escalatory move”.

“There are a number of other possibilities as well, but I think we’d like to have all the facts and consult with our allies before we make specific determinations,” he added.

On Friday, Poland rejected Donald Trump’s suggestion that the incursions could have been a mistake, a rare contradiction of the US president from one of Washington’s closest European allies.

Its foreign minister told Reuters that Poland hoped Washington would take action to show solidarity with Warsaw. At the United Nations on Friday, the US called the airspace violations “alarming” and vowed to “defend every inch of NATO territory”.

Russia has said its forces had been attacking Ukraine at the time of the drone incursions and that it had not intended to hit targets in Poland.

Spectacular drone show over Vatican recreates Michelangelo’s ‘Creation of Adam,’ Virgin Mary

Sep. 14, 2025, 10:38 a.m. ET

More than 3,000 drones lit up the night sky above the Vatican, forming images of the Virgin Mary, Pope Francis and Michelangelo’s “Creation of Adam” in a spectacle over St. Peter’s Basilica.

More than 80,000 people packed St. Peter’s Square on Saturday night for the high-tech display, which was staged by Nova Sky Stories — a company owned by Elon Musk’s brother Kimbal Musk.

The drones formed halos, doves of peace, glowing hearts and a portrait of the late Pope Francis above the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica.

It followed a mega-concert co-directed by Andrea Bocelli and Pharrell Williams.

The Grace for the World concert closed out the World Meeting on Human Fraternity 2025, a two-day summit drawing global leaders, artists and activists to the Vatican.

Performers included John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Karol G, the gospel choir Voices of Fire and Bocelli.

As Bocelli sang “Amazing Grace,” the drones assembled into the face of Pope Francis, drawing silence before the crowd erupted in applause.

Williams opened the show by thanking Pope Leo XIV for “reminding us that true compassion and grace begin with fraternity.”

He urged the crowd to “galvanize” and see humanity’s shared strength “far beyond the reaches and constrictions of different religions.”

As the music ended, the drone fleet rose above the Sistine Chapel, breaking centuries of tradition with a choreographed light show.

The display capped a two-day conference where global leaders, academics, entrepreneurs and activists met at 15 roundtables to discuss ways to promote human fraternity.

Their proposals were unveiled during Saturday’s Human Assembly, described by organizers as the launch of an international synodal process on fraternity.

Organizers said the concert and drone show was meant to be a unifying finale, blending religious tradition with modern technology before a global audience.

Cardinals, clerics, and activists including Graça Machel Mandela delivered speeches on unity and peace between performances.

Nova Sky Stories spent nearly two years planning the display, securing rare Vatican access after Francis’ death and the election of Leo XIV.

The company built and programmed all 3,500 lightweight drones in-house, cycling 3,000 at a time while others recharged on hidden Vatican train tracks and parking lots.

Each 12-ounce drone can generate 16 million colors, using real-time GPS and radio signals to lock into place with pinpoint precision.

If a drone drifted off course, it was programmed to either find its way back, return to base, or shut off safely before hitting the ground.

Nova executives compared the drones to Michelangelo’s paintbrushes, calling them a new medium for large-scale art.

Kimbal Musk told National Geographic that his goal was not just to “blow people away with drones” but to move them emotionally, adding, “If we can make grandma cry…Yeah, you want to touch their emotions.”

Chief strategy officer Don Degnan told National Geographic that pairing the Sistine Chapel’s Old World art with Nova’s high-tech display delivered “immersive art at a crazy scale.”

Pilot union urges FAA to reject Rainmaker’s drone cloud-seeding plan

12:10 PM PDT · September 13, 2025

Rainmaker Technology’s bid to deploy cloud-seeding flares on small drones is being met by resistance from the airline pilots union, which has urged the Federal Aviation Administration to consider denying the startup’s request unless it meets stricter safety guidelines.

The FAA’s decision will signal how the regulator views weather modification by unmanned aerial systems going forward. Rainmaker’s bet on small drones hangs in the balance.

The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) told the FAA that Rainmaker’s petition “fails to demonstrate an equivalent level of safety” and poses “an extreme safety risk.”

However, Rainmaker CEO Augustus Doricko said an email that all of the union’s objections are based on only the public notice, rather than non-public documents submitted to the FAA that outline all of the company’s safety data and risk mitigations.

Rainmaker is seeking an exemption from rules that bar small drones from carrying hazardous materials. The startup filed in July, and the FAA has yet to rule. Instead, it issued a follow-up request for information, pressing for specifics on operations and safety.

In its filing, Rainmaker proposed using two flare types, one “burn-in-place” and the other ejectable, on its Elijah quadcopter, to disperse particles that stimulate precipitation.

Elijah has a maximum altitude of 15,000 feet MSL (measured from sea level), which sits inside controlled airspace where commercial airliners routinely fly. Drones need permission from Air Traffic Control to fly inside this bubble.

Rainmaker’s petition says it will operate in Class G (uncontrolled) airspace unless otherwise authorized. ALPA notes the filing doesn’t clearly state where flights would occur or what altitudes would be used.

However, Doricko said the documents submitted to the FAA disclosed that in addition to the flights being constrained to a max altitude of 15,000 feet MSL, they will be conducted in airspace that is predetermined to be safe by aviation authorities, “voiding any reasonable concern about high altitude flight or airspace coordination.” ALPA did not reply to TechCrunch’s requests for comment.

The union also objects to the flares themselves, citing concerns about foreign object debris and fire safety. ALPA points out that the petition does not include trajectory modeling of the ejectable casings or analysis on the environmental impacts of chemical agents.

“Regarding their objection to the use of flares, independent bodies like this administration’s EPA and multiple state departments of natural resources have studied the dispersion and environmental safety of materials used in cloud seeding for over 70 years and never found any adverse effect from cloud seeding,” Doricko said.

Sam Kim, Rainmaker’s aviation regulatory manager, said the company respects the pilot’s union and hopes to “continue to strengthen our relationship with the organization,” but claimed the objection “shows a lack of understanding of why Rainmaker has filed for this exemption.”

“Our use of flares in unmanned systems is solely for research purposes in a controlled flying environment and is not a part of our larger ongoing operations,” Kim added.

Doricko said that a typical Rainmaker operation disperses 50-100 grams of silver iodide, and far less than that in a flight with flares, while one hour of flight of a commercial plane releases kilograms of uncombusted volatile organics, sulfur oxides, and soot – significantly more material than a Rainmaker op.

“Rainmaker is interested in doing the best, responsible atmospheric research and is thus comparing flares to our proprietary aerosol dispersion system that will replace flares and exclusively emit silver iodide.

ALPA’s objection to this exemplifies their limited understanding of our CONOP, all of which contains extensive risk mitigations in the non-public docs that the FAA is reviewing now,” Doricko said.

“Regarding ALPA’s concerns about coordination with aviation authorities and airspace, our flight operations consist of broadcasting signals, intentional coordination with local ATC, certified pilots, and a collision avoidance system that involves electronic and physical observers,” he said.

However, Rainmaker says the flights will occur over rural areas and over properties owned by private landlords “with whom Rainmaker has developed close working relationships.”

Cloud-seeding already happens today, largely in the western U.S., with crewed airplanes flown in coordination with state agencies.

Ski resorts commission the operations to help keep their runs white, and irrigation and water districts fly them to build snowpack in the winter to help feed their reservoirs during the spring melt.

The general practice of cloud seeding dates back to the 1950s. By spraying small particles into certain clouds, scientists found they could induce precipitation.

Typically, cloud-seeding operations use silver iodide for the particles, mostly because they mimic the shape of ice crystals.

When a silver iodide particle bumps into droplets of water that are super-cooled, they cause the droplet to rapidly freeze because its water is already below the freezing point.

Once the ice crystal forms, it can grow quickly if conditions are right, faster than a liquid water droplet would in similar circumstances.

Plus, the rapid growth helps the crystals stick around longer than a water droplet, which might evaporate before it has a chance to fall as precipitation.

Rainmaker’s twist — doing this work with drones instead of pilots — could prove safer in the longer term.

The company points out that the flight profiles are tightly bounded, overseen by a remote pilot and trained crews, over rural areas, with other safety checks in place.

What happens next hinges on whether the FAA thinks those mitigations are sufficient. However it’s decided, the agency’s response will likely set the tone for novel cloud-seeding approaches.

Mysterious streak of light across Shandong night sky sparks UFO speculations

14th September 2025

A mysterious streak of light illuminated the night sky over Weifang, Rizhao, and surrounding areas in Shandong Province last Friday, with multiple witnesses claiming to have seen an “unidentified flying object being shot down” accompanied by two loud explosions.

The Weifang Emergency Management Bureau responded on Saturday (13th September), stating that no reports of incidents or accidents had been received, and no conclusive evidence has been found linking the event to any UFO activity.

The rare phenomenon occurred at approximately 8.45pm, when residents observed a bright, torch-like object moving rapidly across the night sky in a noticeable parabolic trajectory, far exceeding the speed of a normal aircraft.

Shortly after, another glowing object approached from a different direction. The two luminous objects converged and appeared to explode in a flash of intense light, producing thunder-like booms that lightly shook some residents’ windows.

Some witnesses initially mistook the sounds for thunder or artillery fire, as it was raining at the time.

The Weifang Emergency Management Bureau suggested that the event might be attributed to extreme weather conditions or routine industrial operations, but no definitive conclusions have been drawn. Investigations are ongoing.

UAP video from hearing signals ‘turning point’: Ross Coulthart

Updated: Sep 9, 2025 / 10:58 PM CDT

(NewsNation) — The House Oversight Committee hearing on unidentified anomalous phenomena, government disclosure, and protection for whistleblowers took place on Tuesday.

One of the major talking points from the hearing was a never-before-seen video from Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., that he says showed an MQ-9 drone launch a Hellfire missile at an “orb” off the coast of Yemen back in October 2024.

The missile appeared to bounce off the object. Investigative journalist Ross Coulthart, who commented on the hearing in a live stream for NewsNation, told “CUOMO” the video alone was proof of how meaningful the hearing was.

UFO vs. UAP: What’s the difference?

“It matters because that is one of the top missiles in the U.S. military arsenal for combating surface-to-air, and it frankly didn’t make a jot of difference to whatever that object is,” he said.

“That’s significant, because what it shows is there is a technology that’s unhindered by whatever it is that the U.S. is trying to use against it.”

UAP video marks a turning point: Ross Coulthart

Coulthart acknowledged that the video could be a watershed moment for how Americans view UAPs as opposed to the past.

He said that before the hearing, the U.S. military and the U.S. intelligence community as a whole had tried to keep UAPs from being public knowledge.

“Is this the reason why they don’t want us to know about the UAP missile mystery?” Coulthart asked.

“Frankly, I think this was a turning point in congressional awareness on UAPs. Congress got its mojo back.

This video is a signal of its intention to take the defense and intelligence community on for their unwillingness to engage the public on this mystery,” added Coulthart.

During the hearing, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a Florida Republican, suggested she would subpoena Sean Kirkpatrick, former director of the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, whom she earlier in the hearing called a “liar.”

Coulthart feels this is another important step forward for Congress. “The big criticism that was being made before this hearing was that it was going to be a dog-and-pony show,” he said.

“Instead, we did get some compelling witnesses firsthand to some serious concerning events.”

UAP video made US missile system useless: Luis Elizondo

Luis Elizondo, the former head of the government’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, said the UAP video made the country’s entire missile system “completely and utterly useless.”

Elizondo said the missile launched at the UAP is one of the most sophisticated, most capable weapons the military has.

“It is making it almost irrelevant,” Elizondo told Chris Cuomo. “This is a significant problem from a strategic perspective, from a tactical perspective, from a national security perspective. This video is extremely compelling.”

Elizondo added he wishes more of the UAP videos, such as the one at the hearing, were released.

Alleged Meteorite with Alien Life Found in Panama Shakes Social Media

September 14, 2025

A bizarre story from Panama has been captivating social media users, after a local man claimed to have discovered a meteorite from which alien life has been slowly emerging.

The user, known as @kinpanama on TikTok, began posting videos on August 29 documenting the strange growth.

In his footage, what appears at first to be a rock slowly develops a gelatinous, greenish-yellow substance resembling algae, before transforming into a darker, more elaborate structure.

Alleged Panama alien meteorite shakes social media

In the first video, the user presents the alleged meteorite, calling it an “interplanetary visitor,” which he interprets as a major first for Panama.

After a few days, the entity changes, producing a viscous substance resembling algae, and this in less than 72 hours.

According to the Panama man, the alleged meteorite “smells like burning, and the smell keeps getting stronger.” He says he alerted the local university, but no one has shown up yet.

In a video dated three days ago, the man shows the object completely covered in a black, viscous substance, saying he does not know whether he is facing an animal or a plant entity.

The videos quickly went viral on platforms such as X.com and TikTok, with thousands of users debating whether the mysterious object was truly extraterrestrial.

Some viewers, both fascinated and disturbed, nicknamed the creature “Venom,” comparing its evolution to a scene out of a science fiction film.

Others expressed fear at the idea of an alien organism quietly growing in a Panamanian backyard.

Alien life or creative influencer?

But not everyone is convinced this is a case of alien life. Many users argue that what @kinpanama has found is neither a meteorite nor an alien, but rather a striking example of Earth’s own biodiversity.

Known in English as the “Devil’s Fingers” or “Octopus Stinkhorn,” Clathrus archeri is a fungus that at first resembles a white egg or stone.

As it matures, the outer shell splits open, releasing several long, red or black tentacle-like arms that give it a grotesque and alien appearance.

The fungus also emits a strong, unpleasant odor intended to attract flies, which then spread its spores. It is not edible and is widely considered foul-smelling and unsettling, even by mycologists.

Observers note that the apparent “movement” captured in the viral videos is not an alien life form breaking free, but rather insects feeding inside the decaying fungus, contributing to its eerie effect.

After saying in a video that the relevant authorities came to collect samples to study it, the man published a video showing a full-grown entity.

Other users have try to debunk what they consider a hoax. According to YouTube channel @BiologiaDesdeCero, @kinpanama reportedly deleted several of his early videos as his story began going viral.

The channel points out several inconsistencies, including a video of the alleged meteorite crash site, in flames. There, @BiologiaDesdeCero says, one can spot matches that may have been used to stage a fake crash site.

As for the alleged alien entity, the channel suggests it could be a human creation, animated with wires hidden under the table, while the initial meteorite would be a potato painted silver.

In any case, the Panama meteorite remains the most viral topic on social media, with users speculating whether what was found in Panama is AI, CGI, or real alien life.

“I’m scared. This is either the most elaborate hoax or the start of something crazy,” reads a comment on TikTok.

INTERSTELLAR | The Mysteries of the Bible

Sep 14, 2025

"Blind dates are exciting" — with this phrase, Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb introduces 3I/ATLAS, the third interstellar object observed after 'Oumuamua and Borisov.

In this video, Mauro reads and comments on key passages from Loeb's latest papers: anomalous velocity (~60 km/s), retrograde orbit almost on the ecliptic, very close MOID with Mars, and hypotheses of precursor probes to be searched for with HiRISE.

Alongside these scientific hypotheses, Mauro examines ancient texts (Exodus, Ezekiel, Joshua): kavod, "wheels" that move without turning, "optimized" trajectories.

A close dialogue between the Dark Forest (Fermi's paradox) and tales of the Elohim, already explored in his essay with Erich von Däniken, Skies Afire.
