Mormons in Mexico: A brief history of polygamy, cartel violence and faith

Nine members of a prominent Mormon family in northern Mexico, all women and children, were gunned down on Nov. 4 in territory whose control is disputed by the Sinaloa Cartel and the La Linea militia.

Mexico, which has experienced high crime for over a decade, has seen violence surge in recent weeks. On Oct. 17, a shootout in the city of Culiacan involving the Sinaloa Cartel led officials to release from custody Ovidio Guzman, the son of jailed drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

In the context of so much bloodshed, the LeBaron killings are both highly unusual and tragically quotidian.

Unlike most murder victims in Mexico,the LeBarons are U.S. citizens and Mormons – part of a religious community that broke away from Utah’s Church of Latter-Day Saints years ago. But, as many Mexican journalists have written, the peace activism of family member Julián LeBaron could also have made his community a target. And the LeBarons have a history of violent encounters with organized crime.

Mormons in Mexican history

In my 2018 book on American- and Canadian-based religious enclaves in Mexico, I researched the Latter-Day Saints community and the LeBaron Mormons of Chihuahua state, near the U.S. border. Typically, these communities’ members are somewhat reluctant to talk to outsiders, beyond proselytizing.

But as a person of Mennonite background with relatives in Mennonite colonies in Mexico, I was able to interview members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints – the official name of the mainstream Mormon church – in northern Mexico.

Along with the Romneys – relatives of Sen. Mitt Romney, whose father was born in Mexico – the LeBarons are among the most storied families in Mormon history.

Members of Utah’s Latter-Day Saints community emigrated to Mexico in the 1880s to follow their religious beliefs by living in polygamous families, which was illegal in the United States. Polygamy was illegal in Mexico, too, but the government there offered a flexible definition of family and did not enforce its anti-polygamy laws.

Alma “Dayer” LeBaron, the patriarch, was born in 1886 and grew up as a Latter-Day Saint in Colonia Dublán, Chihuahua. In 1904, he married a woman from nearby Colonia Juárez. She left him when he sought a polygamous marriage.

LeBaron fled the Mexican Revolution for Utah in 1912, where he married two women – Maude McDonald and Onie Jones – and had what’s been described as “a large family of sons.”

LeBaron and his big family returned to Mexico in 1924 to find that their Latter-Day Saint neighbors did not welcome their polygamy. So LeBaron established his own colony, called LeBaron, in Chihuahua, Mexico. Today it stretches approximately six miles along a municipal highway and is four miles wide, surrounded by fields. LeBaron also began his own Mormon church.

Railway demining turns deadly in western Russia

Two people are dead and one is wounded after a bomb exploded during an inspection of railway tracks in Orel Region, western Russia, Governor Andrey Klychkov has said.

“Explosive devices were discovered during an inspection of railway tracks… when one of them detonated, two people were killed and one injured,” Klychkov said in his statement on Saturday.

Security agencies are now looking for saboteurs who mined the railway, he added.

According to the governor, several trains have been delayed. “Train crews are providing comprehensive assistance to passengers, we are considering transporting them to their places of residence by bus,” Klychkov said.

In May, two railway bridges were blown up by Ukrainian intelligence in Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk regions. In Bryansk, debris from a bombed bridge fell in front of, and derailed, an inter-city passenger train.

Seven people were killed and over one hundred seriously injured in the crash.

Another railway bridge was blown up as a freight train passed over it in neighboring Kursk Region, wounding the driver and two assistants.

The attacks were carried out the day before the second round of direct Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul. According to the head of Russia’s Investigative Committee Aleksandr Bastrykin, the explosives were foreign-made.

Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas, a lecturer and researcher at Glasgow University, runs the Animal-Computer Interaction (ACI) group and has developed interfaces allowing long-distance calls for pets, as well as interactive enrichment systems for zoo animals like monkeys and giraffes.

Many animals we keep are often naturally highly social creatures, yet they are not kept in the kind of groups in captivity that they would naturally form in the wild or have the same level of social interaction, the scientist has said.

Hirskyj-Douglas started her research by building her dog Zach a phone to communicate with her while she was away. It allows the dog to shake a ball with an accelerometer, signaling for the system to video call her on a nearby screen.

Either one of them can call the other and pick up or ignore the call.

Zach called her frequently, the video calls soon becoming routine, she said.

Since then, Hirskyj-Douglas and her team developed video calls for parrots to socialize. The birds were trained to use their tongues on tablet touchscreens, enabling them to connect with other parrots in a kind of play-dating system.

“We plan to move beyond simple video calling and really enable animals to do things interactively,” she said at the British Science Festival in Liverpool on Thursday, as cited by FT.

“To build a workable ‘animal internet’, we must develop species-specific technologies to meet their needs, giving them tools that match their abilities,” Hirskyj-Douglas said in a comment published by Glasgow University earlier this month.

Baidu, China’s leading search engine operator, filed a patent in May for AI technology that translates animal sounds into human language.

Major Russian Refinery Hit in Large-Scale Ukrainian Drone Attack

Ukraine launched a significant attack using at least 361 drones to target Russia, leading to a brief fire at the Kirishi oil refinery, with no reported injuries.

The situation comes as discussions among major powers continue on how to resolve the deadly conflict in Europe since World War II.

The drone warfare has intensified, with Russian drones being brought down in NATO-member Poland and Ukraine attacking oil refineries and pipelines in Russia, a major oil exporter.

Romania has said a drone breached its airspace during a Russian attack on neighbouring Ukraine.

Fighter jets were scrambled on Saturday, coming close to taking down the aircraft as it was flying very low before it left national airspace toward Ukraine, defence minister Ionut Mosteanu said.

Romania is the latest NATO member state to report an incursion, with Poland deploying aircraft and closing an airport in the eastern city of Lublin on Saturday, three days after it shot down Russian drones in its airspace.

They are the first known shots fired by a member of the Western alliance during Russia's war in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, military exercises are taking place over the Barents Sea, with Russia and Belarus conducting joint drills.

Russian MiG-31 fighter jets equipped with hypersonic ballistic missiles completed a four-hour flight over the neutral waters as part of ongoing "Zapad 2025" military exercises, the Interfax news agency reported on Saturday.

Romania has had Russian drone fragments fall on to its territory repeatedly since Russia began waging its full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago.

Two F-16 fighter jets were initially scrambled by Romania, and later two Eurofighters.

Citizens in the southeastern county of Tulcea near the Danube and its Ukrainian border were warned to take cover, the defence ministry said.

The ministry said the drone dropped off their radar 20km (12 miles) southwest of the village of Chilia Veche.

While helicopters were surveying the area looking for possible drone parts, Mr Mosteanu told private television station Antena 3 that "all information at this moment indicates the drone exited airspace to Ukraine".

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media that data showed the drone breached about 10km (six miles) into Romanian territory and operated in NATO airspace for around 50 minutes.

He said Belarusian airspace was also used for entry into Ukraine's airspace.

Mr Zelenskyy described the reported incursion as "an obvious expansion of the war by Russia," and called for "tariffs against Russian trade" and a "collective defence".

He warned: "Do not wait for dozens of "shaheds" [Iranian-designed drones] and ballistic missiles before finally making decisions."

NATO has said it plans to strengthen eastern flank defence, following earlier Polish airspace violations.

US secretary of state Marco Rubio called the Polish incursion "unacceptable and unfortunate and dangerous", and said while it was unclear if the drones were intentionally sent to Poland, if it was the case, it would be "a highly escalatory move".

Israel levels three towers in Gaza City as residents continue to evacuate area

The Israel Defense Forces said Sunday morning that dozens of terror operatives had been killed across Gaza over the previous 24 hours, as fighting in Gaza City continued to intensify and Palestinians continued to flee amid looming Israeli plans to capture the city.

The IDF struck three tall buildings in Gaza City on Sunday after issuing separate evacuation warnings for all three, including a university building, which Israel said was being used by Hamas.

Meanwhile, a fresh IDF estimate said that more than 300,000 Palestinians had so far evacuated Gaza City, out of approximately a million who were in the city, for other areas of the Strip.

Hospitals in Gaza said Israeli strikes had killed at least 13 people on Sunday; Hamas-controlled authorities, which do not distinguish between civilians and combatants, also reported Saturday that at least 47 people had been killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza over the previous 24 hours.

The IDF confirmed carrying out airstrikes on three high-rise towers in Gaza City on Sunday following evacuation warnings for Palestinian civilians in the vicinity.

On Sunday morning, residents said the Kawthar tower, in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood, was flattened to the ground about an hour after an IDF warning.

There were no immediate reports of casualties. According to the military, Hamas had placed surveillance equipment in that building to track IDF troop movements in the area, in order to advance attacks.

In the afternoon, footage posted by Palestinian media showed a strike against the Mahna Tower high-rise, also in Tel al-Hawa, also following an IDF evacuation warning.

Shortly afterward, Israel destroyed the al-Munawwarah City building on the Islamic University of Gaza campus, Palestinian media reported.

According to the military, Hamas had placed surveillance equipment and set up observation posts in the Mahna Tower and a building on the Islamic University campus, in order to track troop movements and advance attacks.

The military said Hamas operatives “prepared to carry out attacks against IDF troops in the area of one of the buildings that was struck.”

Five days after Israel issued an evacuation order for the entirety of Gaza City ahead of a planned offensive there, the IDF asserted that more than 300,000 Palestinians had so far evacuated Gaza City to other areas of the Strip, according to fresh estimates.

Tens of thousands of people had left the area in the past day, the military said on Sunday.

Around one million Palestinians were estimated to be residing in Gaza City before the IDF began to prepare for a major offensive against Hamas there. Last week, the IDF ordered all of Gaza City to evacuate immediately ahead of the planned offensive.

Civilians have been instructed to head for an Israeli-designated humanitarian zone in the Strip’s south. Israel has said it will take over Gaza City, calling it one of Hamas’s last strongholds, and mobilized tens of thousands of reservists for the operation.

The UN and aid groups have warned that displacing hundreds of thousands of people will exacerbate a dire humanitarian crisis in the enclave.

Sites in southern Gaza where Israel is telling people to go are often overcrowded, according to the UN, and it can cost money to move, which many people don’t have.

Displaced Gazans say they were stopped from setting up tents

Amid the mass evacuation effort, however, displaced Gazans have — in at least two instances — said they were prevented from setting up tents in an area of the southern Strip.

A video circulating on social media Sunday showed a man in an area north of Khan Younis claiming he was prevented from setting up a tent at the site, saying he was shot at when he tried to do so.

From the footage, it was not clear who the man believes attacked him.

Abdallah, a Gaza City resident who asked not to be further identified, told The Times of Israel that his neighbor left Gaza City after the Israeli military issued an evacuation order amid a widening offensive, and set up a tent in the same area of the south shown in the video.

He said that it was Hamas members who blocked displaced residents from setting up the tents, arguing the land was “government property.”

Strikes across the Strip continue

On Sunday, at least 13 Palestinians were killed and dozens were wounded in multiple Israeli strikes across Gaza, according to local hospitals.

Two parents, their three children and the children’s aunt were killed in one strike, according to the Al-Aqsa hospital.

The family was from the northern town of Beit Hanoun, and arrived in Deir al-Balah last week after fleeing their shelter in Gaza City.

The IDF did not have immediate comment on the particular strikes, but it said Sunday that dozens of terror operatives had been killed in airstrikes in Gaza over the past 24 hours.

In Jabalia and on the outskirts of Gaza City, the IDF said troops of the Givati Infantry Brigade killed more than 10 operatives and destroyed Hamas infrastructure, and that the 215th Artillery Regiment killed additional operatives and destroyed weapon depots.

On the outskirts of Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, the IDF said troops of the 401st Armored Brigade led a strike that killed a group of at least 10 Hamas operatives who were identified in the area.

Also over the weekend, in northern Gaza, the military said the 990th Reserve Artillery Regiment killed additional operatives and destroyed a Hamas anti-tank missile launch post used in a previous attack, and that the Yiftah Reserve Infantry Brigade and Gaza Division’s Northern Brigade destroyed several buildings being used by Hamas for surveillance.

In southern Gaza, reservists of the Etzioni Reserve Infantry Brigade destroyed Hamas surveillance equipment and killed several operatives, the IDF added.

IDF names some Hamas commanders killed in last month

The military also said Sunday that more than 20 Hamas terrorists, including several who participated in the October 7, 2023, onslaught, have been killed in strikes carried out by the 282nd Artillery Regiment in the past month.

Among the slain terrorists who invaded Israel on October 7, 2023, was Yousef Jumaa, the commander of a terror cell that raided Kibbutz Alumim, the IDF said, adding he also carried out attacks against Israel and IDF troops in Gaza during the war.

Other operatives killed in the regiment’s strikes were named by the IDF as Samir Laqta, the commander of a Nukhba force cell; Issa Abbas, a company commander in Hamas’s Zeitoun Battalion; and Ismail Adwan, Ahmed Adwan and Mohammed Adwan, all members of Hamas’s Beit Hanoun Battalion.

Water pipeline to south Gaza resumes after repairs

Water supply to the southern Gaza Strip via a pipeline from Israel has resumed following repairs carried out by international organizations, Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories said on Sunday.

The Bani Suheila pipeline, near Khan Younis, is one of three water lines from Israel to Gaza.

Hamas authorities report two malnutrition-related deaths

The Hamas-controlled health ministry claimed on Sunday that two Palestinian adults had died of causes related to malnutrition and starvation in the Gaza Strip over the last 24 hours.

That brought the ministry’s death toll from malnutrition-related causes to 422, including 145 children, since the war began.

Israel denies that there is starvation in Gaza, and has said that a series of steps it took in July to facilitate the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid have brought food prices in Gaza’s markets back down.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Israeli military said Yemeni forces had launched an unmanned aerial vehicle towards the Ramon Airport near the city of Eilat.

The army further asserted that its anti-air missile systems “intercepted” the drone, Press TV reported.

The development comes less than a week after the Yemeni military claimed responsibility for a series of drone strikes against Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv, the Ramon Airport and a sensitive facility at Dimona city in the Negev desert, using three home-grown aircraft.

Spokesperson for the Yemeni military, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, announced in a televised statement on September 8 that the operation attained its desired objectives.

Paramilitary Drones Hit Key Sites In Sudan

Multiple paramilitary drones attacked key army positions and civilian infrastructure in Sudan’s south on Sunday, an army official told AFP, just a week after similar strikes hit the capital.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by a brutal war between the regular armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), killing tens of thousands and displacing millions.

Sunday’s strikes targeted the headquarters of the Sudanese army’s 18th Division, along with fuel depots on the western bank of the Nile, east of the army-held city of Kosti in White Nile state, the official said.

Additional attacks hit the Kenana airbase and airport, located southeast of Kosti, while drones also struck the Um Dabakir power station, east of the city, the official added on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to the media.

Eyewitnesses in Kosti, located some 320 kilometres (200 miles) south of Khartoum, reported extremely loud explosions during the attacks.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks and the extent of the damage remains unclear.

An army spokesman separately said that a number of paramilitary drones targeted early Saturday facilities in El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state.

Army air defences intercepted the drones on El-Obeid, located about 400 kilometres (about 250 miles) southwest of Khartoum, the spokesman said, adding that no casualties were reported.

The army did not specify which facilities were targeted.

The attacks come days after a wave of RSF drone strikes targeted key infrastructure and army installations in and around Khartoum, including a power station, an oil refinery, a weapons factory and an airbase.

The RSF’s Tasis administration, which has declared itself the governing authority in paramilitary-held areas, later claimed responsibility, describing them as “precise and successful air strikes”.

Following the army’s recapture of the capital in March, the RSF has increasingly used drones to attack army-controlled areas, often targeting critical infrastructure and causing widespread power outages affecting millions.

Efforts to broker a ceasefire between warring parties have so far failed.

On Saturday, Sudan’s army-aligned government pushed back against a new peace proposal from four influential foreign powers — the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.

The proposal called for a humanitarian truce, followed by a permanent ceasefire and a transition toward civilian rule.

The four nations also suggested that no warring party should be included in the post-war transition — a proposal swiftly rejected by the government.

Sudan’s current state institutions remain under army control.

The conflict has effectively split the country, with the army holding the north, east and centre, while the RSF dominates parts of the south and nearly all of the western Darfur region.
