here’s what credible reporting says about the “exploding pager/walkie-talkie” operation and what it implies technically—at a high level…
-What happened (2024, Lebanon/Syria): Thousands of pagers and then walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah detonated in two waves (Sept 17–18, 2024). Multiple outlets attributed the operation to Israel; later an Israeli spokesman said Netanyahu approved the pager attacks.
-Where the charge was hidden: Reuters’ teardown-based reporting describes battery packs that had been infiltrated with a small plastic explosive and a novel detonator “invisible to X-ray.” A separate Reuters piece cited PETN in the walkie-talkie batteries, with claims of only a few grams of explosive. These were not “battery chemistry” failures; they were explosives disguised as batteries.
-“Shaped charge” or just a small charge? Public sources don’t confirm use of classic shaped-charge liners (the armor-piercing jet you might think of). Analysts mostly point to small concealed explosive charges timed/triggered to detonate when the device was in the hand or near the face—hence the characteristic hand/eye injuries reported—rather than evidence of a precision shaped jet. The exact internal geometry and trigger method remain classified/undisclosed.
-Supply-chain infiltration: Investigations describe a covert supply-chain manipulation: devices ordered through intermediaries, with the explosive/trigger embedded upstream so the pagers/radios arrived pre-booby-trapped.
