White House Orders Agencies To Prepare Mass Layoff Plans In Event Of Shutdown

The White House budget office has instructed federal agencies to prepare to fire a ton of people (aka 'reduction-in-force' plans) that could permanently eliminate jobs in the event of a government shutdown - the latest twist in the latest shutdown groundhog day - effectively challenging Democrats to a game of chicken.

In a memo shared with agencies Wednesday, the Office of Management and Budget said departments must identify programs where discretionary funding will lapse on Oct. 1 and no alternative source is available. Instead of a typical furlough, OMB has told agencies to get ready for permanent reductions - starting with positions that are out of alignment with President Donald Trump's priorities.

In the past, affected employees were furloughed on a temporary basis and reinstated once Congress approved new spending. Not this time - as OMB Director Russ Vought is using the prospect of deep cuts as leverage against the Democrats.

"Programs that did not benefit from an infusion of mandatory appropriations will bear the brunt of a shutdown," reads the OMB memo - with agencies instructed to submit their proposed RIF plans and to issue notices to employees who might otherwise be excepted or furloughed during a lapse in funding, Politico reports.

Core services - including Social Security, Medicare, veterans benefits, military operations, law enforcement, immigration enforcement and air traffic control - would continue regardless of a shutdown, according to an OMB official familiar with the guidance.

At the heart of the deadlock, Democrats are demanding that any short-term spending measure include an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies that are due to expire, as well as broader negotiations on domestic priorities. Republicans, by contrast, are pushing to advance a leaner stopgap bill already passed by the House that would fund the government through Nov. 21 while largely preserving Trump administration priorities and holding the line on additional healthcare spending.

… the while impressive sounding, the while house of trade cards would crumble the moment someone does anything more than cursory due diligence, or merely peeks behind the curtain to try to understand what was just signed.

It appears that South Korea just peeked.

According to the WSJ, Trump’s trade deal with South Korea - announced with so much fanfare - is on shaky ground, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick taking a tough line in talks as some Seoul officials privately argue to allies that the White House is moving the goal posts.

As a reminder, in late July Trump said the U.S. had agreed to lower South Korea’s reciprocal tariffs, plus levies on autos, to 15% from a proposed 25%. In exchange, South Korea pledged $350 billion in U.S. investments, plus another $100 billion in American energy purchases.

Well, it appears that Trump is altering the deal (and pray he doesn't alter it further). Lutnick, in recent conversations with South Korean officials, has discussed with Seoul the idea of increasing the $350 billion they had previously guaranteed to the U.S. in July and suggested the final tally could get closer to the $550 billion pledged by Japan.

Furthermore, the commerce secretary has also told South Korean officials in private that Trump is looking for more of the funding to be provided in cash rather than loans, a recurring joke by those who first pointed out that the deal is, in a word, ridiculous as the $350BN represents a fifth of the country's entire gross domestic product.

According to the WSJ, the fate of the Trump administration’s trade pact with South Korea represents a key barometer for the U.S.’s broader tariff dealmaking with dozens of countries. Many of those deals, including the one with Seoul, have been verbal, not signed, agreements. That has left a gulf between the U.S. and some of its key trading partners over what it would take to cross the finish line.

US Jets Scrambled To Intercept Russian Warplanes Off Alaska Amid Growing Incidents

Amid ongoing soaring tensions between the West and Russia, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) scrambled American fighter jets to identify and intercept four Russian warplanes flying near Alaska.

NORAD indicated in a fresh statement that the incident occurred Wednesday, and involved a pair of Russian Tu-95 long-range strategic bombers and a pair Su-35 fighter jets traversing the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).

The US side sent E-3 early warning and control aircraft, and four F-16s and four KC-135 tanker planes, "to positively identify and intercept" the Russian aircraft - NORAD described.

The ADIZ is considered international airspace that borders US and Canadian sovereign airspace. Such an action by Russian aerial forces has become somewhat routine, but has occurred more frequently over the last couple years, also as war continues to rage in Ukraine.

For example, August saw three similar incidents play out within only a matter of a week. And before that, there were a half-dozen instances since the year's start where Russian planes entered the ADIZ.

There were dozens of other instances in 2024 and 2023 - each requiring NORAD to send its own jets to shadow, monitor, and intercept the Russian aircraft.

As we detailed before, in September 2024 NORAD released footage of a Russian plane flying "within just a few feet" of US military aircraft near the coast of Alaska, prompting a general to say at the time that the Russian Su-35 plane’s conduct "was unsafe, unprofessional, and endangered all."

NORAD has previously acknowledged that Russian bomber flights near Alaska occur "regularly". But recently China has even begun to join some Russian patrols of northern Pacific areas, including areas extending near Alaska.

Multiple powerful earthquakes rock Venezuela

Tremors have been felt in the capital Caracas and across several states as far as neighboring Colombia

At least ten powerful earthquakes struck northwest Venezuela on Wednesday and early Thursday, sending tremors across the South American country as far as the capital Caracas.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research (Funvisis) said several tremors exceeded magnitude 5.8, including two that came in over 6.

The epicenter was near Mene Grande in the oil-rich state of Zulia, about 600km (370 miles) west of Caracas. The strongest, at magnitude 6.3, struck at 5:21 pm local time.

At least 21 aftershocks have been recorded in the past seven hours. Local seismologists are monitoring ongoing activity in the region.

No casualties have been reported, but videos and photos shared online showed cracked walls in high-rises and damaged roads.

US Intel Leads To Capture Of Cartel-Linked Baby Trafficking, Organ Harvesting Ringleader

U.S. intelligence aided in the capture of an alleged female ringleader of a cartel-linked baby trafficking and organ harvesting network, officials announced Wednesday.

The National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), part of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), provided intelligence that supported the arrest of Martha Alicia Mendez Aguilar, also known as “La Diabla,” according to an agency press release. Aguilar’s network lured pregnant women to remote locations, forced cesarean procedures, harvested organs from the mothers and sold the babies to couples in the U.S. for up to 250,000 pesos (roughly $14,000).

“This is one example of what terrorist cartels will do to diversify their revenue streams and finance operations,” NCTC Director Joe Kent said in a statement. “NCTC delivered critical intelligence on ‘La Diabla’s’ location and developed comprehensive analysis that enabled U.S. and Mexican law enforcement partners to take action. I am proud of our team’s ability to work with our forward-deployed U.S. partners and Mexican law enforcement to stop these horrific acts.”

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG)-affiliated baby trafficking ringleader was captured in Juarez, Mexico, on Sept. 2, according to ODNI. The operation was executed by Mexican law enforcement partners and Fiscalia Especializada en la Mujer (the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Women) with the support of the U.S. Marshals Service El Paso, the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation El Paso, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, according to the press release.

“NCTC remains committed to disrupting all aspects of terrorist cartels and their operations. And in this case, the lives of innocent women and children depended on it,” Kent said.

Since returning to the Oval Office, President Donald Trump has intensified his crackdown on cartels. On day one, he signed an executive order directing the State Department to label certain cartels and transnational gangs as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs). On Feb. 20, the State Department officially designated groups — including CJNG, Tren de Aragua and MS-13 — as FTOs.

“As a result of these efforts, NCTC is applying two decades of counterterrorism expertise to assist law enforcement partners in targeting FTO-designated cartels, like CJNG, who use violent tactics, terrorize localized communities, and gain control over territory that enables them to engage in profitable illicit activity,” the press release stated.

On Friday, U.S. forces conducted a strike on a cartel boat carrying more than 2,000 pounds of cocaine, marking the third such strike this month targeting a drug-trafficking vessel operating in the U.S. Southern Command’s area of responsibility.

Spain To Join Italy in Sending Warship To Assist Gaza Aid Flotilla After Israeli Attack

At least 14 Americans are on Gaza flotilla boats, including many veterans

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Wednesday that Spain will join Italy in sending a military warship to help the Global Sumud Flotilla, which is attempting to deliver aid to starving Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip and came under drone attack following threats from the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

“Last night, multiple civilian boats were targeted by unmanned drones,” the Global Sumud Flotilla said on Wednesday. “The attacks included the deployment of explosive and incendiary devices, deliberate dispersal of chemical substances onto civilian vessels, disabling of emergency communication devices, and calculated physical damage designed to render the ships unseaworthy and endanger volunteers aboard.”

The group added that all of its crew remain safe. According to a flotilla tracker, the flotilla consists of 52 boats, and the majority of them are currently right off the coast of Crete. Two boats previously came under drone attack when they were in Tunisia.

Italy was the first country to announce it was deploying a warship to aid the flotilla, citing the presence of Italian citizens on the boats. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said that to “ensure assistance to the Italian citizens on the flotilla,” he had “authorized the immediate intervention of the Italian Navy’s multi-purpose frigate Fasan.”

Sanchez announced his plans to deploy a warship while attending the UN General Assembly in New York. “The government of Spain insists that international law be respected and that the right of our citizens should be respected to sail through the Mediterranean in safe conditions,” he said.

“Tomorrow we will dispatch a naval vessel from Cartagena with all necessary resources in case it was necessary to assist the flotilla and carry out a rescue operation,” Sanchez added.

According to Ann Wright, a retired US Army colonel and peace activist, at least 22 American citizens, including six veterans, are among the more than 500 unarmed crew members on boats in the flotilla. The US government has stayed quiet about the Israeli attacks on the flotilla boats despite the presence of US citizens.

The Sumud Flotilla marks the fourth attempt to break Israel’s starvation blockade on Gaza this year, but the first time that multiple vessels are involved. The first boat to try to break the blockade this year, the Conscience, came under Israeli drone attack off the coast of Malta in May, halting its journey.

In June, another boat, the Madleen, made it close to Gaza’s coast before being boarded and seized by Israeli forces and taken into an Israeli port. The third boat, the Hamdala, was also captured by Israeli forces, and the humanitarian aid it was carrying was seized when it attempted to break the blockade in late July.

Back in 2010, Israeli forces raided six boats attempting to break the blockade on Gaza, and nine Turkish activists were killed on one of the vessels.

In largest strikes yet, IAF jets bomb Houthi military sites in Yemen after drone attack

IDF says 20 fighter jets dropped 65 munitions on military compounds, including top HQ, weapon depots; Katz says ‘many dozens of Houthi terror operatives’ killed

The Israeli Air Force carried out strikes on Thursday against Houthi military sites in Yemen’s capital Sanaa, in response to the Iran-backed group’s repeated attacks on Israel, including a drone attack on Eilat a day prior.

The Israel Defense Forces said it struck seven targets belonging to the Houthis’ “security and intelligence apparatus” and army, including a top military headquarters. Defense Minister Israel Katz said the “powerful” strikes killed “many dozens of Houthi terror operatives, and destroyed stockpiles of UAVs and weaponry.”

The Houthis’ Al-Masirah television reported that the “Israeli aggression” on Sanaa came moments before it began broadcasting a weekly pre-recorded speech by the terror group’s leader, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi.

It was unclear if casualties were caused in the strikes.

On Wednesday, the Houthis launched an explosive-laden drone that evaded Israeli air defenses and struck the resort city of Eilat in the south, wounding 22 people, including two men in serious condition. Israel vowed to respond to the attack, claimed by the Iran-backed group.

Texas Youth Baseball Coach Shot by Three Men While Praying with His Players on the Field (VIDEO)A Houston youth baseball coach was nearly gunned down earlier this week while kneeling before God with his young players in a senseless crime.

As Fox News reported, a coach for the Texas Colts was in a pregame prayer with his players on Sunday when three people fired gunshots in their direction from a nearby pasture.

Video of the incident obtained by local news outlets shows the 12-year-old players running to safety while the bullets fly. One adult is struck and collapses to the ground next to home plate.

Police said the 27-year-old coach was given medical treatment on the baseball field after being shot in the shoulder before being flown to a hospital via LifeFlight in stable condition. He was relased from the hospital hours later.

Houston Warriors founder Andy Baize revealed to KHOU-TV that the coach performed a heroic act after he was shot. He moved to his left in front of one of the children as the bullets continued to fly, potentially saving the little boy’s life.

“He literally took the bullet for a child that was to his left, and so thankfully we avoided a major disaster,” Baize said. “Still very, very emotional over it.”

The Waller County Sheriff’s Office said that Mahmood Abdelsalam Rababah, 23, Ahmad Mawed, 21, and Mustafa Mohammad Matalgah, 27, were arrested on felony charges of deadly conduct with a firearm. Each suspect is being held on $100,000 bond.

The owners of The Rac Katy claimed in a statement that the crime was a result of “recreational shooting on a nearby property.”

“People shoot on their land all the time. At the time, we were unaware of anything in season. Now that we have more information, we know that there were three individuals target practicing 600/700 yards away” they added.

But how “recreational shooting” resulted in a coach getting shot and little kids being put in danger is unclear.

ICE Agents Won't Comply With California's 'Unconstitutional' Face Mask Ban: DHS

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said on Sept. 22 that it will defy California’s new law banning federal immigration agents and other law enforcement personnel from wearing face masks while on duty.

“To be clear: We will NOT comply with Gavin Newsom’s unconstitutional mask ban,” DHS said in a social media post.

DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin accused California Gov. Gavin Newsom of “fanning the flames of division, hatred, and dehumanization of our law enforcement” by signing the ban.

Newsom signed the measure on Sept. 20, making California the first state to prohibit most officers from covering their faces during official duties. The move followed criticism of masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducting operations, which Newsom described as resembling a “dystopian sci-fi movie.”

“Unmarked cars, people in masks, people quite literally disappearing,” Newsom said. “No due process, no rights, no right in a democracy where we have rights.”

Trump administration officials have defended the masks as essential for agent safety at a time when immigration enforcement has grown politically explosive, in some cases drawing violent anti-ICE protests.

“At a time that ICE law enforcement faces a 1,000 percent increase in assaults and their family members are being doxxed and targeted, the sitting Governor of California signs unconstitutional legislation that strips law enforcement of protections in a disgusting, diabolical fundraising and PR stunt,” McLaughlin said.

Microsoft pulls the plug on IDF tech over alleged Gaza surveillance

Following a review, the company concluded that the Israeli military used Microsoft's Azure to store large volumes of phone call recordings from Gaza and the West Bank.

Microsoft on Thursday said it disabled a set of cloud and AI services used by a unit within the Israel Ministry of Defense (IMOD) after an internal review found preliminary evidence supporting media reports of a surveillance system in Gaza and the West Bank.

Brad Smith, Microsoft's president, said the company opened the review after an article by the Guardian alleged activity by a unit of the Israel Defense Forces.

A joint investigation published in early August by the Guardian, Israeli-Palestinian publication +972 Magazine and Hebrew-language outlet Local Call reported that an Israeli military surveillance agency used Microsoft’s Azure to store large volumes of mobile phone call recordings from Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.

"We do not provide technology to facilitate mass surveillance of civilians," Smith said in a Microsoft blog.

Microsoft has informed the Israeli defense ministry of its "decision to cease and disable specified IMOD subscriptions and their services, including their use of specific cloud storage and AI services and technologies."

The action does not impact Microsoft's cybersecurity services to Israel and other countries in the Middle East, Smith said.

Microsoft's ties to Israel

In late August, Microsoft fired four employees who took part in protests on company premises over its ties to Israel as the war in Gaza continues, including two who joined a sit-in at the office of the company's president.

YouTube Re-Bans Alex Jones and Nick Fuentes - After Touting Commitment to 'Free Expression'

Google-owned YouTube on Thursday morning banned the brand-new channels of Alex Jones and Nick Fuentes – just two days after the platform touted their newfound commitment to "free expression" in a letter to the House Judiciary Committee.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) claimed Tuesday on X that Google, under GOP pressure, had committed to offer "ALL creators" banned from YouTube for "political speech" the opportunity to return to the platform.

"So Youtube will only be reinstating channels they approve under a 'limited pilot program' which hasn't even started yet," Nick Fuentes commented Thursday afternoon on X. "Sounds a little ridiculous. Can't we just have free speech? I've been banned since February 2020 when I was 21 years old."
