Thomas Jacob Sanford, a 40-year-old U.S. Marine Corps veteran from Burton, Michigan, has been identified as the suspect in a mass shooting and arson attack at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township on Sunday, September 28, 2025.
He was killed in a gunfight with two officers approximately eight minutes after the attack began.
The incident resulted in four fatalities, including Sanford, and at least eight injuries, with one victim in critical condition.
Sanford served as a mechanic and vehicle recovery operator in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2004 to 2008, deploying for a year during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
He was a sergeant and received several medals for his service.
He graduated from Goodrich High School in 2004 and was recognized as a veteran alumnus.
A GoFundMe page from 2015 indicated his son was born with a rare genetic disorder, congenital hyperinsulinism.
Authorities are investigating the motive for the attack, which involved Sanford ramming his pickup truck into the church, opening fire with an assault rifle, and intentionally setting a fire inside the building.
A law enforcement source confirmed an "exhaustive" investigation is underway, including a physical search of Sanford’s residence and obtaining digital media to help identify a motive.
