‘I’m a bad boy’: S.F. sheriff’s brother-in-law allegedly grew weed in county jail

San Francisco Sheriff Paul Miyamoto’s brother-in-law faced criminal charges three years ago after he was allegedly caught smoking and growing marijuana inside a county jail, where he worked as a plumber.

The Chronicle was alerted to the case, which has not previously been reported, after revealing this week that Miyamoto had cleared the way for his office to rehire as a deputy a friend who admitted to lying to the FBI during its investigation into now-imprisoned Chinatown crime boss Raymond “Shrimp Boy” Chow.

MIAMI, Fla. – U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) announced the establishment of a new Joint Task Force (JTF) under II Marine Expeditionary Force (II MEF) today to synchronize and augment counter-narcotics efforts across the Western Hemisphere.

The JTF will integrate the expeditionary capabilities of II MEF with Joint Force and U.S. interagency partners, represented by the Homeland Security Task Force.

“Transnational criminal organizations threaten the security, prosperity, and health of our hemisphere,” said Adm. Alvin Holsey, Commander, SOUTHCOM. “By forming a JTF around II MEF headquarters, we enhance our ability to detect, disrupt, and dismantle illicit trafficking networks faster and at greater depth – together with our U.S. and partner-nation counterparts.”

Key objectives of the new JTF include:

• Identifying narcotics trafficking patterns to interdict illegal shipments of narcotics before they reach the U.S. and partner-nation territories using intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance aircraft.

• Expanding real-time intelligence fusion among U.S. military, federal law enforcement, and partner-nation agencies.

• Conducting joint training to improve interoperability among U.S. military services and increase rapid-response posture.

• Enhancing partner-nation counter narcotics operations capacity through advisory teams and combined operations.

“Our team is trained, equipped, and ready to lead this Joint Task Force,” said Lt. Gen. Calvert Worth, Commanding General, II MEF and designated JTF Commander. “This is principally a maritime effort, and our team will leverage maritime patrols, aerial surveillance, precision interdictions, and intelligence sharing to counter illicit traffic, uphold the rule of law, and ultimately better protect vulnerable communities here at home.”

The JTF will report directly to SOUTHCOM. Its creation underscores SOUTHCOM’s commitment to a whole-of-government, multinational approach to defeat and dismantle criminal networks that exploit our shared borders and maritime domains.

President Trump should first figure out what the US has been doing to China.

Let’s set aside what happened before. On September 29, the US Department of Commerce announced a new rule that expands its "entity-list" export restrictions to subsidiaries at least 50 percent owned by a company on the list — a move clearly aimed at Chinese companies. This was widely seen as Washington’s attempt to create new leverage ahead of the next round of China–US talks.

On Wednesday, the US agencies including Commerce Department announced they were adding 15 Chinese companies to its restricted trade list. On Thursday, the Treasury Department said it would impose a fourth round of sanctions targeting on China-based refineries that continue to purchase Iranian oil. In addition, the US will start to charge port fees on Chinese-made freight vessels, starting October 14.

Faced with such a US, shouldn’t China show them a thing or two? Shouldn’t it make sure they don’t get carried away, knowing that China also holds powerful leverage to counter them?

Trump to visit Egypt and Israel early next week amid ceasefire deal in Middle East

President Trump said Friday he plans to visit Egypt and Israel during a one-day trip to the Middle East early next week to mark the implementation of a peace agreement that will see a pause in fighting in Gaza and the release of dozens of hostages.

Trump told reporters he will visit Cairo while in Egypt, and he plans to speak at the Knesset, Israel’s parliament. He indicated many other world leaders would be in attendance. The president is expected to depart Sunday evening, spend Monday in the Middle East then fly back to Washington, D.C.

Trump indicated he wants to get back to the White House for a Tuesday ceremony to award Charlie Kirk, the late conservative activist, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
