ProPublica reveals Trump’s DHS quietly removing oversight, merging law enforcement powers, and building a hidden architecture of control

Trump’s second term isn’t a repeat of the first. It’s an expansion of power that moves quietly while the noise of rallies and courtrooms fills the air. Beneath that noise, a new kind of federal force is taking shape — one that operates without oversight, without public transparency, and without restraint.

According to ProPublica, Trump’s DHS appointees have “dismantled civil rights guardrails, protected agents’ anonymity and encouraged them to wear masks, threatened groups that stood in their way, and overwhelmed legal challenges to their arrests and tactics.” That is how secret policing begins — not with a law, but with a decision to remove limits.

“Under President Donald Trump’s deportation mission, ICE officers are using force to detain and jail immigrants… The administration gutted guardrails and offices meant to rein in abusive actions.” The same report shows how the machinery of enforcement has been retooled to act faster and answer fewer questions.

This is not only about immigration. It is about what happens when a president turns federal agents loose in American cities and then threatens to send troops into San Francisco. Archive link.

In California, Marines fired live artillery over a public interstate. A patrol vehicle was struck by shrapnel. NBC News confirmed the event. The boundary between military training and civilian safety is being erased piece by piece.

In Los Angeles, a curfew imposed under vague claims of public safety has gutted restaurants across downtown. Some report losses as high as 80%. SFGate described business owners who say they were blindsided by the order and still waiting for relief.

The reach of enforcement is spreading through the system itself. ProPublica found that the IRS is building a network that allows ICE to access taxpayer records and home addresses “on demand.” Police departments are also being deputized under ICE’s 287(g) program, turning minor traffic stops into immigration raids.

Inside DHS, the last internal safeguard is gone. The Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties has been shut down, freezing more than 600 active cases. ProPublica reports that the closure removed the only mechanism capable of investigating abuse from within.

Israeli premier says 153 tons of bombs dropped on Gaza, admits breach of ceasefire deal

At least 44 Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza on Sunday despite ceasefire

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu boasted Monday that his army struck the Gaza Strip on Sunday with 153 tons of bombs, in what amounts to an admission of violating a ceasefire agreement.

Speaking at the opening of the Knesset’s winter session, Netanyahu faced repeated interruptions from opposition lawmakers protesting his government’s policies and its deliberate prolonging of the Israeli war in Gaza.

“During the ceasefire, two soldiers fell… We struck them with 153 tons of bombs and attacked dozens of targets across the Gaza Strip,” he said.

The Gaza government media office reported 80 Israeli ceasefire violations since the US-sponsored agreement came into effect on Oct. 10, resulting in 97 Palestinians killed, including 44 on Sunday alone, and 230 others injured.

Tel Aviv alleged that Hamas had attacked its forces in the southern city of Rafah. The Palestinian group has denied any involvement and reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire agreement.

The ceasefire deal was announced on Oct. 10, based on a phased plan presented by US President Donald Trump. Phase one included the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

The plan also envisages the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.

Since October 2023, the Israeli genocidal war has killed over 68,200 people and injured more than 170,200, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

ISIS-Linked Syrian Official Captured, Then Freed by U.S. Forces In New Scandal

The United States-led coalition captured a member of ISIS during a helicopter raid in the heart of Syria, only to release him later with mortal wounds after finding out that he recently became a local official working with the country’s new Islamists-led government.

The news of the capture of Ahmed Abdullah Al-Masoud al-Badri spread quickly on social media after the raid, which took place in the town of al-Dumayr, some 40 kilometers to the northeast of Damascus, on October 18.

The raid was reportedly carried out by U.S. special forces and the Syrian Free Army (SFA). The group announced it was merging into the new Syrian military shortly after the fall of the regime of former president Bashar al-Assad. However, it continues to operate in the area of al-Tanf under the direct command of the U.S.-led coalition.

Syrian pro-government activists initially cheered for the “joint raid,” with U.S. special envoy to the country Tom Barrack even commenting on the news by writing “Syria is back to our side” on his official X account.

Al-Badri’s history as a member of ISIS is well known. His wife is reported to be the sister of Ibrahim Al-Naqrash, a senior commander of the terrorist group.

Despite this, he returned to al-Dumayr to work as a local official, or a “Sheikh,” with the government right after the fall of the Assad regime. This emerged shortly after his capture by the U.S.-led coalition. A photo showing him weeks earlier escorting Deputy Governor of Rif Dimashq, Mohammed Al-Amer, on a tour in al-Dumayr even surfaced online.

The exact details of his work with the government remain unclear, but appear to be related to the General Security Service, which is the country’s national police service, or the General Intelligence Service.

Once the information of al-Badri’s affiliation with the government spread everywhere, he was released by the U.S.-led coalition. He was, however, badly wounded. Apparently he resisted arrest and fired at U.S. special forces who shot back, hitting him. Another member of ISIS was reportedly killed at the time. On October 20, it was reported that he succumbed to his wound in a hospital near Damascus.

To justify the whole ordeal, some pro-government activists alleged that al-Badri was spying on ISIS for Syrian security forces and was framed by the SFA as a result of an old disagreement. Of course, none of these justifications makes any sense. What is more likely is that the man was simply a coordinator, or a liaison officer, between the government and the terrorist group.

Both the Syrian government and the U.S.-led coalition ignored the death of al-Badri. However, tensions were reported in al-Dumayr.

Everyone's a Target: What the Vatican, Israeli Arms Dealers and Jared Leto All Have in Common?

An international investigation reveals an Indonesian company selling advanced surveillance tools used to track journalists, critics, Jared Leto and even a prosecutor of Netanyahu – and how Israelis with ties to Africa got caught in the web

Barak Orland is an Israeli businessman living in Uganda for over a decade. He runs the company Bar Aviation, is considered close to President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled for 40 years, and has taken part in numerous defense deals in that East African republic. In May 2012, he became a surveillance target. An unknown actor used what was then cutting-edge technology to pinpoint his phone as he walked across Istanbul's Atatürk Bridge.

A month earlier, a similar foray targeted Liat Ben Ari, the lawyer who years later would lead the corruption prosecution against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. She had just been appointed the Tel Aviv District's top prosecutor for tax and economic issues. This tracking attempt failed. Others did not.

Orland and Ben Ari are just two of over 300 Israelis whose cellphones have been targeted for surveillance. They were tracked using technology from an Indonesian firm called First Wap, a development being reported this week for the first time in an international investigation in partnership with Haaretz.

First Wap was among the first companies to sell cellphone surveillance capabilities and is considered a founder of what is now termed the digital intelligence industry. At defense expos today, it markets an array of simpler tools including capabilities it claims can rival Israel's most advanced spyware. And unlike infamous offensive cyber firms like NSO Group, its wares have also been used by private clients, not just governments.

Media & MPs Condemn Westminster Attack on Press Freedom

The campaign comes after officials blocked Declassified UK from holding a press pass, citing its Gaza “standpoint.”

More than 100 politicians, journalists and campaigners have condemned a “flagrant and partisan attempt to suppress investigative journalism” by Parliament.

It comes after officials blocked Declassified from holding a press pass, citing the “particular standpoint” of our investigations.

They even flagged a recent article about the risk of pro-Israel bias in Westminster.

Now, an open letter calls on authorities to urgently review this decision and issue Declassified with a press pass.

The open letter has also been signed by more than 5,800 Declassified readers and supporters, and was hand-delivered to Westminster officials on Wednesday.

Signatories include Labour MPs John McDonnell, Clive Lewis and Richard Burgon; the Plaid Cymru leader Liz Saville-Roberts; the SNP’s Chris Law and Brendan O’Hara; and the leaders of Your Party, Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana.

Dozens of journalists have also signed the letter, including Peter Oborne, Ash Sarkar, Owen Jones, Sangita Myska, Fatima Manji and the chair of the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, Richard Sambrook.

They are joined by the heads of Reporters Without Borders, The Committee to Protect Journalists, The Centre For Investigative Journalism, Hacked Off, Good Law Project and Unlock Democracy.

Comedians Nish Kumar, Josie Long, Fern Brady and Alexei Sayle also signed the letter, along with the economist and author Yanis Varoufakis and leading civil rights barrister Michael Mansfield KC.

Parliament has issued passes to almost 500 journalists, providing access to the corridors of power in Westminster. They include many from right-wing outlets like Guido Fawkes and GB News.

When Declassified’s application for a pass was first rejected, officials claimed it was due to capacity “limitations within the Parliamentary estate.”

But documents released under the Freedom of Information Act revealed there was no limit to the number of press passes that can be issued — and capacity was not even discussed as a consideration.

Instead, they cited the “standpoint” of our foreign policy investigations — and bizarrely even claimed that foreign policy does not count as “politics.”

President Trump Demands $230 Million From DOJ For Russia Witch Hunt, Mar-a-Lago Raid

President Trump demanded $230 million in compensation from the Justice Department for the federal investigations into him.

Any settlement must be approved by senior DOJ officials, according to The New York Times,

President Trump submitted his first complaint in 2023 and claimed his rights were violated during the special counsel investigation into whether Russia election meddling.

Trump’s second complaint, filed in summer 2024, is seeking damages over Biden’s FBI raid of his Mar-a-Lago residence. Trump accused the DOJ of malicious prosecution.

The claim accuses former Attorney General Merrick Garland, former Special Counsel Jack Smith and former FBI Director Wray of “harassment” according to The Times.

“This malicious prosecution led President Trump to spend tens of millions of dollars defending the case and his reputation,” the claim said.

The New York Times reported:

President Trump is demanding that the Justice Department pay him about $230 million in compensation for the federal investigations into him, according to people familiar with the matter, who added that any settlement might ultimately be approved by senior department officials who defended him or those in his orbit.

The situation has no parallel in American history, as Mr. Trump, a presidential candidate, was pursued by federal law enforcement and eventually won the election, taking over the very government that must now review his claims. It is also the starkest example yet of potential ethical conflicts created by installing the president’s former lawyers atop the Justice Department.

Mr. Trump submitted complaints through an administrative claim process that often is the precursor to lawsuits. The first claim, lodged in late 2023, seeks damages for a number of purported violations of his rights, including the F.B.I. and special counsel investigation into Russian election tampering and possible connections to the 2016 Trump campaign, according to people familiar with the matter. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because the claim has not been made public.

The second complaint, filed in the summer of 2024, accuses the F.B.I. of violating Mr. Trump’s privacy by searching Mar-a-Lago, his club and residence in Florida, in 2022 for classified documents. It also accuses the Justice Department of malicious prosecution in charging him with mishandling sensitive records after he left office.

Anthony Albanese praises Kevin Rudd after Trump rebuke

Amid calls for Kevin Rudd’s head, Anthony Albanese has made it very clear where the Australian ambassador stands after his smack from Donald Trump.

Anthony Albanese has leapt to Kevin Rudd’s defence after he was criticised for laughing when Donald Trump humiliated Australia’s foreign ambassador at the White House.

“If there’s a harder working ambassador on the Hill, then please let me know because Kevin works his guts out and he seems to know everything,” Mr Albanese said in DC on Tuesday morning local time.

The Australian prime minister then went to the US Capitol where he met with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jefferies and congressional leaders from each of the major parties.

Mr Albanese and Mr Jefferies shook hands before calling Mr Rudd over to join them for a photo.

It comes after Mr Trump signed a deal on rare earth minerals with Mr Albanese on Monday, and said Washington’s key ally would get its coveted nuclear-powered attack submarines.

During the meeting, an awkward confrontation played out between Mr Trump and Australia’s ambassador to Washington – former prime minister Kevin Rudd.

Astonishing moment chief enforcer of Australia's under 16 social media ban laws uses kids' TV show to tell children how to AVOID the ban

Australia's eSafety Commissioner has come under fire after using a children's TV show to tell kids that they can get around the under-16s social media ban simply by using different online platforms.

Julie Inman-Grant last week appeared on the long-running ABC's kids news program, Behind The News, to discuss the Albanese government's ban on young people using social media.

The ban will apply to platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and Snapchat from December 10.

But Ms Inman-Grant said young people could just use other platforms to avoid the prohibition - pointing them instead to video games, which her own agency's research has identified as one of the most harmful digital environments for young people.

'Social media and the online world have helped you find your tribe,' she said.

'It's important to remember that there are still online gaming platforms and messaging apps that aren't affected, so you can still use them.'

The eSafety Commission's Digital Use and Risk report found that 26 per cent of children experienced their most recent or serious cyberbullying incident on a gaming platform.

The risks are particularly high for young boys, about 37 per cent of whom said their most recent or serious cyberbullying experience occurred through online gaming, as opposed to 29 per cent on social media.

Chip Roy And Allies Poised To Demand Vote On Congressional Stock-Owning Ban

"If you’re in Congress, you serve the public interest – not your portfolio"

As if Speaker Mike Johnson didn't already have enough headaches awaiting him when he eventually reconvenes the House, Congressman Chip Roy and a bipartisan group of representatives are promising to push hard for a vote on a bill that would put an end to stock-trading by members of the federal legislature – who routinely have advance access to information that moves both individual securities and entire markets.

"We’re going to have a vote on stock trading,” said Roy on Monday. "When we get back, we got to have a conference discussion about this, or we’re going to be moving forward." Joined by Democrats Seth Magaziner and Pramila Jayapal, the Texas Republican Roy introduced the Restore Trust in Congress Act (HR 5106) on Sept 3 and they've quickly amassed 82 cosponsors. Though backers come from both sides of the aisle, Democrats have joined at a higher clip – there are 64 Democratic and 18 Republican cosponsors.

The New York Times determined that, between 2019 and 2021, 18% of federal legislators traded stocks in industries that are within the scope of their particular committees. However, the Restore Trust in Congress Act's sweeping scope goes far beyond that dynamic, banning members of Congress, their spouses, dependent children and trustees from owning, buying, or selling individual stocks, securities, commodities, futures, and other comparable assets. Current members of Congress would have to unload any "covered investment" with 180 days, while new members would have to divest within 90 days after taking the oath of office. Legislators would be allowed to own diversified mutual funds, Treasury securities, municipal bonds and small businesses.

To ease the sting of capital gains taxes, the measure allows legislators to defer capital gains by reinvesting sale proceeds in comparable investments like mutual funds. Still, the comprehensiveness of the ban could be its undoing altogether, or a compromise could bring the passage of a watered-down measure.

The bill faces opposition by many Republicans, but other GOP members who back the bill told Politico that Johnson has assured them it will get his attention, with Roy saying the speaker is under increasing pressure. “I think there’s going to still be this sort of give and take about how serious some of us are on a real ban as opposed to just some soft limits,” Roy said. “So we’ve got to keep working on that.”

Arrest the judge for child sexual grooming!

Federal Judge Blocks Push To Remove Gender Ideology From Sex Ed Curricula

A federal judge in Oregon said during a hearing on Monday that she plans to issue an injunction stopping the Trump administration from requiring several Democratic-led states to remove references to gender ideology from their sexual health education curricula as a condition of receiving federal grant funding.

U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken, based in Eugene, made the comments in reference to a lawsuit filed by 16 states, including Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, and Wisconsin, as well as the District of Columbia. The states of Oregon, Washington, and Minnesota are leading the group.

The lawsuit centers on an executive order issued by President Donald Trump on Jan. 20—the first day of his second term.

The order called for federal agencies to recognize two sexes, male and female, and to ensure that grant funds do not support “gender ideology.”

The Department of Health and Human Services published notices in August that recipients of grants from the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) and the Title V Sexual Risk Avoidance Education programs must not include content teaching that gender identity is separate from biological sex.

The department also sent 46 states and territories letters in which it mandated the removal of any such references from federally funded materials within 60 days. Non-compliance led to actions including the termination of California’s PREP grant after the state did not change its educational content.

PREP teaches young people about abstinence and contraception to decrease pregnancy risk and sexually transmitted infections, with a focus on supporting children in foster care, homeless situations, or regions with elevated teen birth rates. The Title V program similarly advocates for sexual risk avoidance.

Collectively, the plaintiff states faced losing at least $35 million in funding if they did not comply with the directives.

Summit with Putin should not be ‘wasted time’ – Trump

The US president has declined to confirm reports that the planned meeting in Budapest was placed on hold

“I don’t want to have a wasted meeting, I don’t want to have a wasted time, so I’ll see what happens,” Trump told reporters at the Oval Office.

A journalist then asked the president why he thought the meeting “might be a wasted time.”

Trump replied, “I didn’t say it would. You never know what is going to happen. A lot of things are happening on the war front with Ukraine and Russia. We’ll be notifying you over the next two days as to what we are doing.” He would not say if the event was scrapped or postponed.
