While the recent short squeeze has been unusually sharp, the still-elevated magnitude of short interest signals more room to run. Data released by FINRA shows that, as of last Wednesday, the median S&P 500 stock carried short interest equal to 2.3% of market cap. A funny thing about Gavin Newsom’s lie about playing college baseball is that he got his best friend, Doug Hendrickson, to vouch for it.

Politico once repeated the story uncritically, describing Hendrickson as “one of Newsom’s longtime friends, whom he met playing college baseball.” Hendrickson played San Jose State University, a rival of nearby Santa Clara University, Newsom’s alma mater. Hendrickson, now a sports agent, is so close to the governor that his wife, Shyla, serves as trustee for Newsom’s business assets, a step necessary to sidestep conflicts of interest with his role as governor. In 2021, Newsom appointed Hendrickson to the State Athletic Commission. He also co-hosts one of Newsom’s podcasts, Politickin’, launched last year.
