The US government designated the German far-left group"Antifa Ost" (also known as "Hammerbande")as a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist" (SDGT) on Thursday, November 13, 2025, and plans to further designate it as a "Foreign Terrorist Organization" (FTO) starting November 20, 2025. The group is held responsible for attacks in Germany between 2018 and 2023, as well as a series of attacks in Budapest in February 2023. Germany was not informed of the decision prior to its designation.

US designation: The US government under President Donald Trump designated "Antifa Ost" as a terrorist organization because it allegedly carried out numerous attacks against individuals it considers "fascists" or part of the "right-wing scene."

The group is accused of carrying out attacks in Germany between 2018 and 2023, as well as a series of attacks in Budapest in February 2023. The designation as SDGT will take effect on November 13, 2025, while the planned FTO designation is expected to take effect on November 20, 2025.

Allegations and Investigations: The group is held responsible for attacks in Germany and Hungary, particularly the incidents in Budapest in February 2023, in which several people were attacked with hammers, sticks, and pepper spray.

In Germany, six alleged members were indicted in July 2025, and seven others are currently on trial at the Higher Regional Court in Dresden. In Hungary, another alleged member, Maja T., is on trial for assault.

Reactions and Controversies: The German government was not informed prior to the decision, which is considered unusual.

Security authorities in Germany assess the group's threat potential as reduced, since the ringleaders and violent members have either been convicted or are in custody. Critics warn against the misuse of the terrorist label and its potential extension to political opponents. The Hungarian government had already classified the group as terrorist in September 2025.

🔴 Antifa Ost is not an “activist group” — it is a terrorist organization!

🇺🇸 The U.S. State Department has officially designated four Antifa groups as global terrorist organizations, including Antifa Ost — the violent Antifa brigade that, together with the notorious @SalisIlaria

, assaulted innocent people in broad daylight in Budapest in February 2023. The same terrorist whom the European Parliament shields from accountability with parliamentary immunity! 😡

🇭🇺 Hungary had already declared it a terrorist organization in September 2025.

👉🏼 Now the United States has said it as well: Antifa Ost is not political activism, but far-left terrorism.

☝🏻❌ Zero tolerance for Antifa terrorists!

>Counter Terrorism Designations

Against the background of the “anti-fascist struggle”, violent left-wing extrem-

ists carry out serious physical attacks against individuals identified by them

as “fascist”. In the year under review, such attacks took place in Erfurt and in

Budapest (Hungary),among other places. Furthermore, the Dresden Higher

Regional Court sentenced four violent left-wing extremists (including Lina E.)

FACTS AND TRENDS

to several years in prison without parole. They were accused of three violent

attacks against political opponents which they had committed as members

and/or supporters of a criminal organisation. Among other things, the four

individuals are part of a network considered responsible for numerous acts of

violence against supposed right-wing extremists in the past years. Within the

left-wing extremist scene, the name“Antifa-Ost” (“Antifa East”) is now used

for this network. Individuals belonging to this network are strongly suspected

of having participated in the attacks carried out in the context of the right-

wing extremist event “Day of Honour” which took place in Budapest from 9 to

11 February. In 2023 already, two suspected left-wing extremist perpetrators

were arrested.23 The other suspected perpetrators managed to escape the

police after having committed the act and most of them have been in hiding

since. They are wanted on a European arrest warrant. It is not to be expected

that this circle of individuals will turn away from violence. It is rather to be

feared that, over time, a further radicalisation will take place.

The establishment of the Antifaschistische Aktion Süd (“Antifa Süd”, “An-

tifa South”) in 2022 marked a new development in the left-wing extremists’

violent “anti-fascist struggle”. In contrast to the loose network “Antifa Ost”,

this network has fixed structures composed of a total of eight regional groups.

The main focus of “Antifa Süd” is on combining “anti-fascist” forces more

efficiently than before. The long-term goal of “Antifa Süd” is a Germany-wide

“Antifaschistische Aktion” (“Antifascist Action”).

It is not just supposed right-wing extremists that the left-wing extremist

scene regularly labels as “fascists”. This term is also applied to the state, its

free democratic order and the persons representing it. Violence-oriented

left-wing extremists consider crimes and violence to be essential elements

of their “anti-fascist struggle”. Crimes in this context range from doxing to

threats, damage to or destruction of property, arson attacks on vehicles or

meeting places to brutal physical attacks on supposedly “fascist” people, often

also in their private environment. In their “anti-fascist struggle”, even unre-

strained brutality and extreme violence against persons is a legitimate and

The group’s membership and ideology were

extremely heterogeneous; they drew on conspiracy narratives typical of the

“Reichsbürger” scene such as the S.H.A.E.F. 19 conspiracy theory andQAnon, 20

as well as elements of far-right ideology and New Age beliefs.

This conspiracy theory is based on the idea that a secret elite, often described as Satanists and paedophiles and referred to

as the Deep State, is striving to establish a global dictatorship or “new world order”.

Antifascist Gino released ahead of extradition judgement

News, Mar 27th

The defence cited grim reports of “white torture” in Hungarian prisons, including permanent solitary confinement and 24-hour surveillance

~ Alisa-Ece Tohumcu ~

After five months in Fresnes Prison,Rexhino “Gino” Abazaj, a 32-year-old Albanian anti-fascist activist, was released under judicial supervision yesterday (26 March). Arrested in Montreuil in November 2024, he faces up to 24 years in prison if extradited to Hungary for alleged violence against neo-Nazis. His case, which has sparked a widespread mobilisation from activists, unions, and politicians, will be decided by the Paris Court of Appeal on April 9.

Gino’s arrest stems from his alleged involvement inclashes during the far right “Day of Honour” gathering in Budapest in 2023. Seventeen other anti-fascists have been arrested in the case, including Italian MEP Ilaria Salis who spent 15 months in pre-trial detention, andMaja Twho was extradited to Hungary last year. In January, seven anti-fascists wanted in the case turned themselves in.

During yesterday’s hearing, prosecutors questioned the feasibility of house arrest due to issues with Gino’s housing documentation. However, his legal team defended the arrangement and presented a job offer as further proof of stability. Gino himself addressed the court, expressing the strength of his support network. After deliberation, the court ruled in his favour, granting release without electronic monitoring.

While Hungarian authorities accuse anti-fascists of participating in a “criminal organisation” and committing violent acts., neo-Nazi participants in the same clashes were released without prosecution. Hungary’s vague assurances about detention conditions and trial fairness have also drawn sharp criticism. The defence cited grim reports of “white torture” in Hungarian prisons, including permanent solitary confinement and 24-hour surveillance. The European Committee for the Prevention of Torture has documented overcrowding, inhumane conditions, and systemic abuse.

Hungary’s judiciary, weakened under Viktor Orbán’s rule, faces mounting EU criticism. The 2016 dismissal of a judge who criticised judicial reforms and ongoing protests by Hungarian magistrates highlight deep concerns about political interference in legal processes. “There is an obvious lack of separation of powers,” Gino’s lawyers argued, adding that France must not become complicit in an unfair political prosecution.

“The charges are disproportionate. The process is unfair. The risks are real,” declared the Committee for the Liberation of Gino. “France must refuse this extradition.” Outside the courthouse, supporters repeated the chant: “Free Gino! Free Maja! Free all antifas!

Repression of counter-protesters

In 2023, 18 anti-fascist activists, mainly German and Italian, were prosecuted by the Hungarian courts for their participation in a counter-demonstration in response to the Day of Honor.[8] Hungarian authorities launched a Europe-wide manhunt by issuing European Arrest Warrants to apprehend activists, particularly in France, Italy, Germany, and Finland.[9]

Ilaria Salis.

Italian activist Ilaria Salisis accused of injuring three participants and belonging to a criminal organization.[10] Eleven years in prison are sought against her.[11] Salis suffered numerous violations of her fundamental rights during her incarceration, deprived of access to basic hygiene products, including during her period, forced to wear soiled clothing, suffering from malnutrition, deprived of basic medical care, and prevented from communicating with her family for more than six months,[10] subjected to more than a month of solitary confinement, and detained in a cell infested with insects.[9] She was also subjected to interrogations without a lawyer or translator[9] and was shackled at the ankles in a Hungarian court in 2024.[11]

Her legal team was repeatedly denied access to the case file, while Hungarian government officials publicly portrayed her as guilty. During the hearings, neo-Nazi activists in paramilitary uniforms intimidated those suspected of supporting her. Her notoriety in Italy led to her election to the European Parliament in June 2024 under the banner of the Greens and Left Alliance, which granted her parliamentary immunity, which Orbán's allies attempted to lift.[9]

Gabriele Marchesi, an Italian man in his twenties, escaped extradition after a Milan court blocked the European arrest warrant in 2024, although nothing prevents Hungary from issuing a new warrant if Marchesi travels to another European Union country.[9]

After fleeing when legal proceedings against him in Finland appeared to be leading to his extradition to Hungary,[9] Albanian anti-fascist activist Rexhino Abazaj, known as "Gino," was detained in France in November 2024 in connection with this case. He refused to be extradited to Hungary and was released in March 2025. In April 2025, the Paris Court of Appeal definitively refused his extradition, ruling that he would not receive a fair trial in Hungary and could be subjected to ill-treatment there.[8]

Maja T., a German non-binary activist, is facing extradition to Hungary despite a subsequent intervention by the Federal Constitutional Court, which sanctioned the court that authorized the transfer due to prison conditions in Hungary and anti-LGBTQ+ measures under the Orbán government.[9][11] In February 2025, Maja appeared in court in Budapest in chains, stating: "I am being prosecuted by a European state because of my anti-fascist activism."[9]

In January 2025, six people suspected of involvement in the 2023 attacks have surrendered to German authorities to avoid extradition to Hungary.[11]

In September 2025, Viktor Orbán cited the arrest of Ilaria Salis to justify his decision to classify "Antifa" as a terrorist organization, following the example of US President Donald Trump.[12]
